Former&nbsp;Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori, who steered economic growth during the 1990s but was later jailed for human rights abuses stemming from a bloody war against Maoist rebels, died on Wednesday. He was aged 86.

Close colleagues visited him earlier in the day, reporting that he was in a critical condition.

"After a long battle with cancer, our father... has just departed to meet the Lord," his daughter Keiko Fujimori wrote in a message on X, also signed by the former leader's other children.&nbsp;

Fujimori, the son of Japanese immigrants, was the little-known chancellor of a farming university when elected to office in 1990. He quickly established himself as a cunning politician whose hands-on style produced results even as he angered critics for concentrating power.

He slayed hyperinflation that had thrown millions of&nbsp;Peruvians out of work, privatised dozens of state-run companies, and slashed trade tariffs, setting the foundations for&nbsp;Peru&nbsp;to become, for a while, one of Latin America's most stable economies.&nbsp;

Under his watch, the feared leader of the Maoist Shining Path, Abimael Guzman, was captured - dealing a crucial blow to a movement that in the 1980s seemed close to toppling the&nbsp;Peruvian state. Guzman died in prison in September 2021.&nbsp;

But many&nbsp;Peruvians saw Fujimori as an autocrat after he used military tanks to shut down Congress in 1992, redrafting the constitution to his liking to push free-market reforms and tough anti-terrorism laws.

A slew of corruption scandals during his 10-year administration also turned public opinion against him.&nbsp;

Shortly after he won a third election in 2000 - amending the constitution to run - videos emerged of his top adviser and spy chief Vladimiro Montesinos doling out cash to bribe politicians. Fujimori fled to exile in Japan.&nbsp;

He resigned via fax from Tokyo and then unsuccessfully campaigned for a Japanese senatorial seat.&nbsp;

Montesinos was later captured in Venezuela and jailed, convicted by the hundreds of videos he recorded of himself handing out cash bribes to politicians and business and media executives.

The cases against Fujimori piled up - including accusations that he had ordered the use of death squads in his battle against Shining Path militants.

Fujimori was safe in Japan - he was a dual citizen and Japan does not extradite its citizens. So many were shocked when in 2005 he decided to head back to&nbsp;Peru, apparently in hopes of forgiveness and a return to politics.

Instead, he was detained during a layover in Chile, extradited to&nbsp;Peru&nbsp;in 2007, and in 2009 he was convicted and sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Once jailed, Fujimori's public appearances were limited to hospital visits where he often appeared disheveled and unwell.&nbsp;

While detractors dismissed his health complaints as a ploy to get out of prison, then-president Pedro Pablo Kuczynski briefly pardoned Fujimori in 2017.&nbsp;

Months later Kuczynski was impeached and the pardon overturned by&nbsp;Peru's top constitutional court, sending Fujimori back to the special prison that held him and no other inmates.

The court restored the pardon in December 2023, releasing the ailing Fujimori, who had suffered from stomach ulcers, hypertension and tongue cancer. In May 2024, Fujimori announced he had been diagnosed with a malignant tumor.&nbsp;

Fujimori's legacy has been most passionately defended by his daughter Keiko, who has been close to clinching the presidency herself three times on a platform that has included pardoning her father and defending his constitution.&nbsp;

Muhammad Yunus-led interim government in Bangladesh&nbsp;has asked&nbsp;Hindus in the country not to play musical instruments as part of Durga Puja celebrations during namaz and azan, the country's local media reports stated.

Bangladesh Home Affairs Adviser, Lieutenant General (retired) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, on Tuesday said that puja committees have been asked to turn off sound systems and avoid playing musical instruments during namaz and azan.&nbsp;

He further said that the organisers had agreed to the&nbsp;request.&nbsp;

"Such activities need to cease during offering namaz, and the pause will have to be followed from five minutes prior to azan," Chowdhury was quoted as saying by The Times of India on Tuesday.

The announcement was made after a meeting on the law and order situation in the country ahead of Durga Puja at the Dhaka Secretariat.&nbsp;

Durga Puja is the largest Hindu religious festival in Bangladesh.&nbsp;

<h2>Over 32,000 puja mandaps to be set up</h2>

Chowdhury said that a total of 32,666 puja mandaps will be set up across the country.&nbsp;

Of these mandaps, 157 will be in Dhaka South City, and 88 in North City Corporations, according to local newspaper Dhaka Tribune.&nbsp;

This comes weeks after attacks on the minority Hindu community in Bangladesh subsequent to student protests against quotas&nbsp;in education and jobs for descendants of Bangladesh's freedom fighters. This also led to the resignation of then Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina.&nbsp;

The safety of the Hindu minority in Bangladesh has been questioned after Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to India.&nbsp;

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) group is up in arms against the use of real fur. It argues that the ethical issue of treatment of animals along with the massive costs incurred makes the case for abandoning the use of real fur for the caps. Notably, £1 million ($1.3 million) was spent on fur caps in recent years.

The MoD says it is open to exploring the use of faux fur, "if they pass the necessary requirements."

The basic requirements, as per the ministry, include the need for the faux fur to satisfy "safety and durability considerations". It added that "no alternative has met all those criteria to date".

The interim government in Bangladesh is set to scrutinise its deal with Indian conglomerate, Adani Group. The government, headed by Muhammad Yunus, is keen to know the terms of the 2017 agreement under which Adani Group exports power to Dhaka from its Jharkhand unit.

“There will be scrutiny of Indian businesses, like the Adani business...what kind of contracts have been signed, what are the terms and conditions, one cannot have a foreign company not follow the law of the land,” a senior official of the interim government was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

Kiki Fuchser, mother of a fifth grader, criticised the Tallmadge City School after she was suggested to sign a health education consent from her middle school daughter.

Upon close inspection of the syllabus of fifth to&nbsp;eighth grade at her daughter’s middle school, Kiki noticed explicit videos being shown to children about masturbation.

One of the clips read, “How many times can a person masturbate in one day?” An animated young boy masturbates and moans before being interrupted by an adult voice at the door. He responds: “I’m coming.”

The video was set&nbsp;where a child was curious about why the penis gets erect sometimes throughout the day, also showing that girls have a private part and that they may want it to be touched because it gives them pleasure.

They were also taught through the video that there is absolutely no limitation to the number of times a person can masturbate&nbsp;in a day.

The school used the clips from the #AskAMAZE section of AMAZE Org's YouTube channel.

<h2>Syllabus of middle school children</h2>

Fuchser shared that schools won't be able to supervise what content the children are going to consume&nbsp;once they are introduced to this topic.

"A sixth grader, seventh grader, eighth grader, ninth grader should never be taught how to masturbate,"&nbsp;she said.

"They tell them to use AMAZE Junior, but they can easily go to YouTube and get on regular AMAZE. And regular AMAZE starts in sixth grade,"&nbsp;she added.

Fuchser found that all she had to do to access the material that the school included in the programme&nbsp;was follow the link on the permission slip. 
 
“It had the syllabus on there and a link to show you what material she will be learning,” she said.

"We live in a fairly conservative area… I did some research and you will be astounded, and blown away by what they are trying to teach."

“It is absolutely disgusting.”

Lessons included are gender confusion, the spectrum of gender, even pornography, and doctor confidentiality.

“But remember, porn is not real. It’s just a fantasy, like superhero movies.”

Another video includes children’s privacy with medical provision, how women get pregnant, and the different sexualities of people.

Fuchser was disgusted by the content the school was about to teach her fifth-grade daughter.

She said, “It is imperative that we pay attention to what is going on in our schools.”

"We on the right are saying the left is trying to over-sexualize our children. This is exactly what we’re talking about.

“They want to gaslight us and pretend it’s not happening.”

She wrote a letter to her child’s school principal regarding the content the school is about to educate her daughter with, requesting that her daughter should not be involved.

She shared the video on TikTok, making other parents aware of the school’s absurdity. The video has gained more than 10,000 likes.

In a shocking interview, Alaska Airlines pilot Emily Wiprud revealed that she was not aware of a door&nbsp;panel having blown out of the Boeing aircraft she was flying with four flight attendants and 171 passengers aboard till she made the landing.

In an interview with CBS News, She said that she had a feeling that something was “catastrophically wrong" but was not entirely aware of the mid-flight emergency.

“It was so incredibly loud. And I remember putting the oxygen mask on and trying to transmit to air traffic control and wondering ‘Why can’t I hear anything?'” she said.

Heavy rains and strong winds hammered Louisiana early Thursday (Sep 12) as Tropical Storm Francine moved inland, leaving many residents without power while floods threatened the US southern state.

The storm weakened from a hurricane as it moved over land, forecasters said, but it still posed risks and a flash flood emergency was earlier issued for the city of New Orleans.

Local TV stations and footage on social media showed coastal towns battered by the storm, with some streets flooded and locals filling sandbags to protect property from floodwaters.

More than 370,000 customers across Louisiana were without power, according to monitoring website poweroutage.us.

Francine made landfall as a Category 2 hurricane on a five-level scale in Terrebonne Parish, on the southern edge of the state, at 5:00 pm local time (2200 GMT), according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Hours later Francine was downgraded to a tropical storm with sustained winds of 50 miles (85 kilometers) per hour, with three to six feet (one to two meters) of storm surge, and up to a foot of rain in some parts of Louisiana, as well as areas of Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida panhandle, the NHC added.&nbsp;

"This rainfall could lead to considerable flash, urban, and river flooding," the NHC said in a bulletin at 0600 GMT.

Curfews starting as early as 6:00 pm were issued for communities across the Louisiana capital region, local media reported.

Low-lying Louisiana was the site of one of the most devastating storms in US history -- Hurricane Katrina -- which killed more than 1,300 people as it slammed into populous New Orleans in late August 2005.

Right now, she is escaping the wildfires in the state. She says she went to her aunt's place after a third emergency alert was sent to evacuate.

Her husband is still in Lake Arrowhead, and waiting for the final alert to evacuate. Wyland says people seem to be leaving the area. "It looks like they're heeding the warnings, and everything's closed up in town. No banks," she said.&nbsp;
