Covid scare back in Europe and US as new contagious variant XEC becomes dominant

At least nine fighters and medics linked with the Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah died and&nbsp;2,750 others were injured on Tuesday (Sep 17) as the pagers that they used to communicate exploded suddenly.

The Lebanese health ministry said more than 200 people were critically injured&nbsp;in the attack for which Hezbollah held Israel "fully responsible."&nbsp;

"We hold the Israeli enemy fully responsible for this criminal aggression," the group said in a statement, adding that Israel "will certainly receive its just punishment for this sinful aggression".

News agency Reuters said, citing&nbsp;a Hezbollah source, that this was one of the biggest ‘security breaches’ the group has faced since the Israel-Hamas war broke out.

Hezbollah in a statement said the group was&nbsp;still conducting a "wide-ranging security and scientific investigation to determine" the cause of the blasts.

Hezbollah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah was not hurt in the explosions, the group said.

<h2>Iran’s ambassador to Lebanon also injured in explosion</h2>

Iranian state media IRNA reported that&nbsp;Iran’s ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amani, was also injured in the explosions.&nbsp;Amani has a superficial injury and is currently under observation in the hospital, IRNA reported.

National News Agency (NNA) reported that hundreds of injured people were rushed to hospitals through the southern suburbs of the capital Beirut after pagers exploded “through the use of high technology.”

Media reports say that Hezbollah’s communications devices were compromised, which led to the blasts.

There were reports indicating similar blasts also occurred in southern Lebanon and Syria. Reuters reported that blasts were taking place even after 30 minutes of the initial explosion.

Al-Hadath news agency quoted a senior Lebanese security source as saying that Israel had infiltrated the communication system of individual devices and detonated them remotely.

Jerusalem Post reported that the pagers were called before the explosion so that maximum wounds could be inflicted upon the person operating the communication device.

Meanwhile, the Lebanese government has now asked its citizens, who own a pager, to immediately discard them. The country's hospitals have also been put on high alert and off-duty doctors have been called in.

Hezbollah issued a statement saying, “At approximately 3:30 pm on Tuesday, 09-17-2024, a number of message receiving devices known as “pagers” exploded, which were owned by a number of workers in various Hezbollah units and institutions,” the group said. 
 
“These explosions, the causes of which are still unknown, also led to the martyrdom of a girl and two brothers, and the injury of a large number of people with various injuries,” it added. 
 
“Hezbollah’s competent agencies are currently conducting a wide-ranging security and scientific investigation to determine the causes that led to these simultaneous explosions. Likewise, medical and health agencies are treating the wounded and injured in a number of hospitals in various Lebanese regions,” Hezbollah continued. 
 
“We affirm that the resistance, at all its levels and various units, is at the highest level of readiness to defend Lebanon and its steadfast people.”

<h2>'Very sophisticated attack, requires collaboration of more than one entity'</h2>

Meanwhile, on the near-simultaneous pager explosions in Lebanon,&nbsp;Al Jazeera quoted a&nbsp;military analyst, Elijah Magnier, as saying, "This is a very sophisticated attack, and normally at this scale, it requires the collaboration of more than one entity." 
 
If Israeli intelligence managed to compromise the pagers supplied to Hezbollah, then they might have managed to access the supply from Iran because Iran supplies Hezbollah with most of its equipment, Magnier added.

He pointed out some “red flags,” including co-founder Stockton Rush’s desire to become a qualified submersible pilot in just one day, a process that usually takes much longer. Lochridge also described Rush’s personality and mentioned a dangerous incident during a dive to the Andrea Doria wreck site, where Rush’s mistake led to him angrily throwing a "PlayStation controller" at Lochridge’s head. Lochridge's involvement with OceanGate He explained that his involvement with OceanGate began in 2015 when his wife noticed a job advertisement while he was working offshore in the North Sea. Lochridge applied, thinking it would be a good match, and after a phone interview, he visited the company in May 2015. From the start, he said, OceanGate’s goal was to reach the Titanic wreck. Issues with the pilot training process Lochridge expressed concern about the company's training process, stating, “OceanGate wanted to qualify a pilot in a day, someone who had never even been inside a submersible." While the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is yet to issue an official statement, a government official told The Hindu that&nbsp;the&nbsp;matter “does not pertain to India” altogether.

Notably, the issue was discussed at a meeting between US Embassy officials and the MEA in the past fortnight.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kanwal Sibal, former Indian ambassador to Russia said banning media organisations showed “double standards” by the Western countries.

“This will be viewed as double standards by the Global South that they are trying to target. India will obviously not be responsive to such American pressure," Sibal told the publication.&nbsp;

Last week US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced sanctions against RT stating that the&nbsp;Russian state-backed media company was&nbsp;“functioning like a de facto arm" of Moscow's intelligence apparatus.&nbsp;

“Today, we’re exposing how Russia deploys similar tactics around the world,” Blinken said. “Russian weaponisation of disinformation to subvert and polarise free and open societies extends to every part of the world.”

“We urge every ally, every partner to start by treating RT’s activities as they do other intelligence activities by Russia within their borders,” Blinken added, with the UK and Canada launching the 'joint diplomatic campaign&nbsp;alongside.&nbsp;

This was the second attempt on Trump's life in two months. Previously, the Republican presidential candidate for the 2024 US Elections was shot at in an alleged assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July&nbsp;13.

At the time, he narrowly escaped the attack as the bullet grazed his right ear. The shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, as per the FBI, saw the Trump rally as a "target of opportunity".

Sharing details about the assassination attempt, Trump during an event on X revealed that 'the suspect fired "four or five" shots.

"All of a sudden we heard shots being fired in the air. I guess probably four or five."

Commending secret services on a "fantastic job" Trump said more people are needed on his protection detail.

"Secret Service knew immediately it was bullets, and they grabbed me. ... We got into the carts and we moved along pretty, pretty good. I was with an agent, and the agent did a fantastic job."

"We do need more people on my detail," he added.

<h2>The suspect hid for 12 hours</h2>

According to a Reuters report, records show that a phone associated with the suspect Ryan Routh was located at Trump's golf course at least 11.5 hours before the incident — starting at 1:59 a.m. (0559 GMT) on Sunday morning.

Ronald Rowe, the acting US Secret Service Director, told reporters that the Republican presidential candidate's visit to the Trump International Golf Course was not planned, and it was unclear whether the suspect knew Trump would be there.

The suspect was on the "public side" of the fence along the golf course's boundary.

Because of a political and economic crisis in Venezuela, many people from that country are allowed to enter the United States and apply for asylum.

But Texas's top border official, Mike Banks, argued that Venezuela "has released prisoners with one condition: you leave Venezuela and don't come back."

He said the administration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris is encouraging such people to come to the United States with what Banks called an open border policy.

Immigration advocates meanwhile say the Biden administration has harshly cracked down on the border with undue restrictions on people wishing to cross and seek asylum.&nbsp;

Appearing at the same press conference as Banks, Governor Greg Abbot formally declared Tren de Aragua a "foreign terrorist organisation."

This allows the authorities to go after the gang under a beefed up anti-terrorism law and also allows for the creation of a task force assigned specifically to fight the group.

The move came a week after the presidential debate in which Trump accused Harris baselessly of allowing millions of undocumented immigrants to cross to the United States from Mexico after being released from prisons or mental health care facilities.
