Reports suggest that a Japanese company will deploy nearly 1,200 stab-proof, lightweight umbrellas on 600 trains in the Kansai region. These umbrellas will be 20 cm longer than the regular umbrellas. They will have canopies and thicker handles to enable better defence.

The initiative has been taken by the West Japan Railway Co (JR West) after several violent incidents took place on the trains. In July 2023, a stabbing incident on a train in Osaka injured three passengers. A 37-year-old man was arrested with three knives in connection with the attacks.

A train conductor and two male passengers, aged 23 and 79, were injured in the incident.

According to Japanese news outlet Mainichi, the umbrellas will be able to shield people against the knives. They are meant to be used as a shield against an assailant and their extra length of 20 cm as compared to a regular umbrella will help keep a safe distance between the holder and the attacker.

"The Liaoning is passing through the Taiwan Strait now, sailing north along the west of the median line (of the passage) and we are closely monitoring it," Defence Minister Wellington Koo told reporters.

The Liaoning, China's oldest aircraft carrier, took part in Beijing's large-scale military drills around Taiwan last week, which were condemned by Taipei and its key backer Washington.

A blockade was among the exercises carried out.&nbsp;

Koo warned on Wednesday that an actual blockade of Taiwan would be an "act of war" and have a "very serious impact on the global economy".

China has two aircraft carriers in active service, and a third undergoing sea trials. The Liaoning has previously passed through the strait.

China's foreign ministry said Wednesday it was "perfectly normal for Chinese aircraft carriers to sail in its own territory and territorial waters".

The Liaoning appeared to be returning to Qingdao port in eastern China via the Pratas Islands, in the northern part of the South China Sea, for "replenishing and necessary maintenance", said Jiang Hsin-biao, a military expert at Taiwan's Institute for National Defense and Security Research.

Its involvement in the recent military drills was for "the purpose of practising against foreign forces and intimidating Taiwan", Jiang told AFP.

Later, two male passengers sitting next to him noticed him masturbating under the blanket. They say that his genitals were fully exposed on a few occasions.

After being removed from the flight, Kunapuli admitted to the investigators that he was masturbating on the plane.

As per a Justice Department release, Kunapuli faces up to 90 days in prison, a $5,000 fine and one year of supervised release.
