China's National Health Commission (NHC) published its first set of guidelines to standardise the diagnosis and treatment of obesity, with more than half of China's adults already overweight and obese, and the rate expected to keep rising.&nbsp;

Job stress, long work hours and poor diets are growing high- risk factors in the cities, while in rural areas, agriculture work is becoming less physically demanding and inadequate healthcare is leading to poor screening and treatment of weight problems, doctors and academics say.

The guidelines provide guidance and regulations including in clinical nutrition, surgical treatment, behavioural and psychological intervention, and exercise intervention for obesity, Zhang Zhongtao, director of the guideline drafting committee and deputy head of Beijing Friendship Hospital told the official Xinhua news agency.

China's NHC and 15 other government departments in July launched public awareness efforts to fight obesity. The campaign, set to last for three years, is built around eight slogans: "lifelong commitment, active monitoring, a balanced diet, physical activity, good sleep, reasonable targets and family action."

In a tragic incident, a Houston radio tower broke after a helicopter crashed into it on Sunday night (Oct 20) and killed four people on board, which included a child.&nbsp;

The crash of the privately owned R44 helicopter happened just before 8 p.m. (local time) in the Second Ward of Houston, after which a huge blaze spread across 600 feet on the ground.&nbsp;

The police have not yet released the identities of the victims; however, it was confirmed that no one on the ground suffered injuries.&nbsp;

The helicopter “was a private touring helicopter,” said Houston City Council member Mario Castillo&nbsp;on X.

Houston Mayor John Whitmire said that the firefighters reached the site minutes after the crash.&nbsp;

“It is surrounded by residences and that’s where we were very fortunate — that it didn’t topple in one direction or another,” said Whitmire.

Fire Chief Thomas Muñoz confirmed that the large area of grass was set ablaze, however, no nearby residences were damaged.

“The helicopter that crashed in Second Ward was not an HPD helicopter, it was a private touring helicopter,” said Houston City Councilmember Mario Castillo on X.

Houston police Lt. Jonathan French on Monday said that thankfully no one on the ground suffered injuries.&nbsp;

Mexican drug lord El Chapo's sons, Ovidio Guzmán and Joaquín Guzmán López are in talks with the United States Attorney’s Office in Chicago for a possible plea deal, their lawyer confirmed Monday. However, it is not known if the two will accept a plea agreement or will become cooperating witnesses.

Jeffrey Lichtman, who represented El Chapo during his 2019 federal trial, will represent both the brothers after the federal judge allowed it. El Chapo's four sons, Ovidio and Joaquín and their other two brothers still at large in Mexico, led the "Los Chapitos" faction of the Sinaloa cartel in Mexico. The cartel is one of the biggest organised crime groups in Mexico.

Monday's hearing confirmed an August report by the Mexican news organisation Milenio that the brothers were negotiating a deal for a more lenient sentence. This might lead them to become cooperating witnesses for the US government, although it is not confirmed yet.

<h2>State killed Golan, says grieving brother of Nova festival survivor</h2>

Golan was the youngest of five siblings and had plans to visit the Western Wall and the Cave of the Patriarchs to celebrate her 22nd birthday,&nbsp;said her family, while speaking to Ynet.&nbsp;

Eyal said that he had lived with his sister during the Sukkot holiday and she appeared okay to me.&nbsp;

“I asked how she was, and she said she was fine. I gave her a hug and a kiss, not realising it would be the last,” the brother said.&nbsp;

The family members of Golan blamed the Israeli government for not taking care of the survivors.

“If the state had taken care of her, none of this would have happened. She said that she doesn’t get any help from the state. She said that she only gets aid from the [Tribe of Nova Community Association],” Eyal said.

While speaking to the Jerusalem Post, the grieving brother said, “The state killed Golan. If the state doesn’t wake up, there will be more cases like this.”

The mother of Golan took early retirement to help her daughter recover from her PTSD, however, she failed to save her.

“My mother had to retire early to be near her daughter,” said Eyal, in conversation with Israel’s Channel 12 News. "We didn’t move a millimetre from her, and the only time we left her alone was today –&nbsp;and she decided to end her life," he added.&nbsp;

Eyal said that during the October 7 massacre, her sister got in a car with her friends to escape Hamas militants but then she had a bad feeling about it and got out of the car.&nbsp;

“Everyone who was in the car was murdered. Eleven people were murdered there. It was a death vehicle. She switched to a police car that took her to Kfar Maimon [a town in southern Israel]. And that’s how she was saved,” he said to Israel Hayom.&nbsp;

The two leaders had a "fruitful discussion," Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri told a media briefing here.

"Both the leaders also discussed the situation in West Asia. Prime Minister Modi expressed his deep concern over the escalating conflict and reiterated India's call for the protection of civilians and the prevention of harm to civilians. He emphasised the need for dialogue and diplomacy to de-escalate the tensions," Misri said.

"Noting that the signing of the long-term contract of Chabahar Port is an important milestone in bilateral relations, the two leaders reaffirmed its significance for reconstruction and redevelopment of Afghanistan and enhancing trade and economic linkages with Central Asia," the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement.

Misri said Afghanistan also figured in the discussion between the two leaders. "Both of them underscored the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the region alongwith continuing humanitarian assistance to the people of Afghanistan," he said.

President Pezeshkian acknowledged India's role in Iran's accession to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and BRICS. "They agreed to continue their cooperation in various international forums," Misri said.

The magazine praised Nuzzi's talent and thanked her for her contributions.&nbsp;

"Nuzzi is a uniquely talented writer and we have been proud to publish her work over her nearly eight years as our Washington Correspondent. We wish her the best,” it said.

For her part, Nuzzi's lawyer said she was satisfied with the conclusions of the investigations and noted her successful tenure. &nbsp;

The attorney was 'gratified though not surprised that two different investigations have determined that her reporting on the 2024 campaign was sound and that she did nothing wrong.'

When the issue blew up, Nuzzi issued a statement saying the relationship should have been disclosed to avoid any appearance of conflict of interest.&nbsp;

While she regretted the oversight and apologised to her colleagues and readers, Nuzzi insisted that the relationship was never physical and that she did not report on RFK Jr during the affair.

Seoul’s intelligence agency last week confirmed that North Korea sent 1,500 special operation forces to Russia this month.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had claimed that his government had intelligence that 10,000 North Korean soldiers were being prepared to join invading Russian forces.

South Korea to send ‘offensive’ weapons to Ukraine after North ‘dispatches’ troops to Russia

A three-old Palestinian boy was killed after pallets of aid air dropped in the&nbsp;southern Gazan city of Khan Younis, his family members said, over the weekend.&nbsp;

The humanitarian crisis has worsened as Israel continues to attack Gaza amid its ongoing war with the Palestinian militant group Hamas.&nbsp;

The incident happened when the family was eating breakfast and pallets dropped from aeroplanes and careened towards the displacement area, the grandfather of the boy, who is also named Sami Ayyad, told CNN.&nbsp;

Several family members tried to take cover inside their improvised tents, however, the falling aid killed the three-year-old on the spot.&nbsp;

Ayyad's aunt and cousin were also wounded on their foot and face respectively.&nbsp;

Several countries have been air-dropping aid into Gaza, including the United States, Britain, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).&nbsp;

A judge in Michigan on Monday rejected an effort by the Republican Party to block some Americans who are living overseas from voting in the battleground state.

The Republican National Committee filed a lawsuit earlier this month arguing that election laws in the state improperly allowed US&nbsp;citizens living abroad who had never lived in Michigan - but whose relatives had - to vote there.

Michigan Court of Claims Judge Sima Patel said in a ruling that the language being challenged by Republicans was consistent with federal and state law.

"There is no ground to invalidate it," Patel wrote.

A U.S. citizen who never lived in the US&nbsp;but who has a parent, legal guardian or spouse who last lived in Michigan is eligible to vote in the state so as long as the citizen has not registered or voted in another state, according to Michigan's secretary of state election officials manual.

At the time the lawsuit was filed, RNC Chairman Michael Whatley said citizens living in Michigan should not have "their votes cancelled by those who've never lived in the state."

The RNC did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the ruling.

Some 2.9 million US&nbsp;citizens living abroad were eligible to vote in 2020, though fewer than 8% of them did, according to the Federal Voting Assistance Program, a government entity that helps military members and other US&nbsp;citizens living abroad with election logistics.

Lebanon's Hezbollah movement said on Tuesday there would be no negotiations while fighting continued with Israel and it claimed sole responsibility for a drone attack on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's holiday home.

The group "takes full and sole responsibility" for targeting Netanyahu's house, Mohammad Afif, head of the Iranian-backed militant group's media office, told a press conference in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

"If our hands didn't reach you the previous time, then days, nights, and the battlefield are still between us," he said.

Months following the Supreme Court Dobbs decision that abrogated the constitutional right to an abortion, the infant mortality rate in the United States has significantly increased, according to new research. The majority of those were infants who were born with congenital anomalies or birth defects.

The findings of the research are similar to a previous study, which analysed the consequences of a ban on abortions in early pregnancy in Texas, said Maria Gallo and Parvati Singh, researchers from The Ohio State University.

“In the seven to 14 months after Roe v. Wade was overturned, we saw a seven per cent increase in infant mortality and a 10 per cent increase in those babies born with congenital anomalies,” said Singh, an assistant professor of epidemiology and lead author of the study, according to Ohio State News.

In the paper published in JAMA Pediatrics, Singh and Gallo compared the infant mortality rates for 18 months after the Dobbs verdict against historical trends. Their findings revealed that infant mortality was higher than expected by about seven per cent, with an average of 247 more infant deaths per month due to chromosomal and genetic conditions.

“This is evidence of a national ripple effect, regardless of state-level status,” said Singh, according to CNN.

The new study revealed that 80 per cent of infant deaths were because of congenital anomalies, which was higher than expected in six of the 18 months after the Dobbs decision. Congenital anomalies cases can range from mild to severe, and in some cases, babies are only able to survive a few months. The most common types can affect the baby’s spine or heart.

“This is the tip of the iceberg,” Singh said. “Mortality is the ultimate outcome of any health condition. This is a very, very acute indicator. It could be representative of underlying morbidity and underlying hardship.”

“Whether the pregnancy was wanted or unwanted, we know that many of these are pregnancies that would have ended in abortion had people had access to those services,” said Ushma Upadhyay, an associate professor at the University of California, San Francisco, who is involved with researching abortion trends in the US.

Experts are saying an abortion ban can impact access to broader health care, which may increase the risk for both babies and mothers.

“These studies are providing a signal that people aren’t getting the care that they need, and because of that, there are spillover effects,” said Alison Gemmill, a demographer and perinatal epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins University who led the research on rising infant mortality and abortion restrictions in Texas.

The nationwide survey, which gets conducted every five years by China's Ministry of Civil Affairs, found that people in the age bracket of 60 and above were also less dependent on their children.&nbsp;

As a result of China's one-child policy of the 1970s, the average number of children per household dropped by 0.6 from 2011 to 2021.

Now, the new average is 2.6 children per household in China.

The poll&nbsp;also noted that nearly 50 per cent of people willing to live in nursing homes could afford to pay up to US $140 only in monthly fees, which makes most aged care facilities out of reach in cities like Beijing and Shanghai.

The cost of aged care facilities is more than US $700 a month in such big cities of China.

The National Committee on Ageing wrote in the survey report that&nbsp;China’s 'traditional way' of relying on children to support their elderly parents is being 'seriously challenged'.

The committee also said, “The rapid growth of the empty-nest elderly population calls for better care services and coordinated policies to improve their well-being.” 
 
The survey also showed a major gap in the annual incomes of people in the particular age group living in urban and rural areas.

For people living in urban areas, the average annual income is around US $6,600, which is more than three times of rural's US $1,900.&nbsp;

For people with age 60 and above, pensions are the primary source of income, but the fund for the pension is expected to dry up by the year 2035. Hence, the government is now encouraging these people to restart their careers.&nbsp;
