Commonwealth leaders, ending a week-long summit in Samoa, said on Saturday (Oct 26) the time had come for a discussion on whether Britain should commit to reparations for its role in the transatlantic slave trade.

Slavery and the threat of climate change were major themes for representatives of the 56 countries in the group, most with roots in Britain's empire, at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting that began in the Pacific Islands nation on Monday.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, whose country has long rejected calls for financial compensation for nations affected by slavery, said summit discussions were not "about money".

On slavery, the leaders said in a joint statement they had "agreed that the time has come for a meaningful, truthful and respectful conversation towards forging a common future based on equity".&nbsp;

The push for ex-colonial powers such as Britain to pay reparations or make other amends for slavery and its legacies has gained momentum worldwide, particularly among the Caribbean Community and the African Union.

The statement also made reference to "blackbirding", a term for people from places including the Pacific Islands being deceived, coerced or kidnapped to work on plantations in Australia and elsewhere.

Those opposed to reparations say countries should not be held responsible for historical wrongs, while those in support say the legacy of slavery has led to vast and persistent racial inequality.

The joint statement did not mention what form reparations should take.

"But I should be really clear here, in the two days we've been here, none of the discussions have been about money. Our position is very, very clear in relation to that," he said.

Professor Kingsley Abbott, director of the Institute of Commonwealth Studies at the University of London, said the statement was a sign of a potentially historic breakthrough on the issue.

"The commitment to conversations on reparatory justice wedges open the door for dialogue, and now the hard work really begins," said Abbott, who attended the summit.

The United States 2024 presidential elections will be held on November 5. Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump are in the ring fighting it out in the last minutes. Here are the key issues that the people of the country would be voting on.

Economy, immigration, violence, abortion rights, and health care are some of the main issues Americans&nbsp;always have on their minds when choosing the next president. However, some of them have been given extra weightage by the voters. The issues and their importance also vary between Democratic and Republican voters.

According to Pew Research, the biggest issue in the 2024 elections is the economy. About eight-in-ten registered voters (81 per cent) say the economy will be the foremost on their mind in the 2024 presidential election.&nbsp;

When it comes to Trump supporters, the economy scores the most with 93 per cent of people saying it is a major factor. Next comes immigration with 82 per cent and violent crime with 76 per cent. Only 18 per cent of Trump supporters cited racial and ethnic inequality as an important issue. Climate change was the lowest in the world with 11 per cent.

Among Harris supporters, health care scores the most with 76 per cent of people being the most concerned about it. Supreme Court appointments follow closely next with 73 per cent. Economy (68%) and abortion (67%) are the next big matter Democratic voters will be thinking about while casting their vote.

A majority of voters have several issues on their minds this election. Only five per cent have one or no issue.

<h2>Immigration and Abortion</h2>

Immigration has become a bigger issue this election as compared to the 2020 election. About six in ten voters (61 per cent) say immigration is very important, an increase of nine percentage points from the 2020 polls. The record of the longest presidential term belongs to Franklin D&nbsp;Roosevelt who was president for over twelve years. He died during the initial days of his fourth term in 1945. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Saturday (Oct 26) said that he would open up the files on the assassinations of former United States president John F&nbsp;Kennedy and civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr&nbsp;if he gets elected next month.&nbsp;

Trump appeared on The Joe Rogan Experience, where he said that he was asked "by a lot of reasonable people" not to open the Kennedy files but he will open them upon returning to the White House.

"I opened them up partially. I met with good people. I mean, you know, look, I've met with good people, people that were well-meaning. Mike Pompeo was one of them. He's a good person. They called me. They said, 'Sir, would rather have you not' and I did open them, but I was asked by some people not to open them," Trump said referring to the Kennedy files.

Trump says he will open up JFK, Martin Luther King Jr assassination files if elected

Cristiano Ronaldo's fan following knows&nbsp;no boundaries. One of his fans proved it when he cycled for seven months from China to Saudi Arabia to meet his hero. The 24-year-old man, surnamed Gong, started off from his home on March 18 and finally met Ronaldo in front of the Al Nassr Football Club on Oct 20, SCMP reported.

To make his dream a reality, Gong first went north to Beijing before going all the way to the west. He then made his way into Kazakhstan from Xinjiang. He crossed six other countries including Georgia, Iran, and Qatar to reach Saudi Arabia’s capital city Riyadh, Ronaldo's current base.

<h2>Gong faced several problems on the way</h2>

His trip was not one without hurdles. He faced the challenge of communicating with the locals, eating in different countries to suit his pocket where prices vary and the exhaustion of cycling such a long distance.

Gong came up with the idea of cycling all the way to Riyadh after Ronaldo cancelled his trip to China following an injury in February. He covered a distance of 13,000 kilometres on his bicycle and carried two 60,000mAh power banks, a tent, cooking utensils, clothes, and some life essentials.
