Sam Lichtman, however, said that he is hoping Trump will serve his presidential term and that “we never have to deal with him again.”

“I’ve said it a hundred times,” replied Allan.

“Democracy is precious, but like all precious things, it can be destroyed. And typically destroyed from within. And throughout the 21st century, democracy has been in decline everywhere around the world, and America has now fallen in step. But never give up hope. It’s unfathomable,” said Lichtman at the end of the stream.

The biggest difference with respect to China policy is on trade, where Trump has proposed tariffs on Chinese imports in excess of 60% and ending China’s most-favored-nation trading status.

That threat alone has unnerved China's industrial complex, which sells goods worth more than $400 billion annually to the U.S. and hundreds of billions more in components for products Americans buy from elsewhere.

Producers interviewed by Reuters expected the tariffs to disrupt supply chains and further shrink Chinese profits, hurting jobs, investment, and already sagging growth. A trade war would raise production costs and U.S. consumer prices even if factories relocated, they said.

New tariffs could be "very challenging for Beijing given the economic difficulties in China," said Zhao Minghao, professor at the Shanghai-based Fudan University.

He added that Beijing also had "deeper concerns over the future of the international economic and trade system," because of Trump's proposal for a 10% tariff on all goods from other countries.

A majority of the 15-member UN Security Council on Tuesday called on North Korea to give up its ballistic missile programme and condemned its launch of an intercontinental missile last month.

"This launch, in addition to the more than 100 ballistic missile launches since 2022 to date, is a clear violation of multiple UN Security Council resolutions, jeopardizes international peace and security and threatens to undermine the global nonproliferation regime," the countries said in a joint statement read out by the deputy US ambassador, Robert Wood.
