A police officer was tried for tasering a 95-year-old woman, who had symptoms of dementia, at an Australian care home and the jury found him guilty of her manslaughter.

The 34-year-old police officer Kristian White used the weapon on Clare Nowland after he found the great-grandmother walking with a small kitchen knife on May 17, 2023.

After a week, the woman's death led to a public outcry, however, senior constable White said at the trial that the weapon was used by him because of his reason and his response to the threat was proportionate.

However, the prosecutors alleged that Nowland, who was dependent on a walker to move around and weighed less than 48kg (105lb), did not pose any danger and that duty of care for the old lady was neglected by the "impatient" officer.

The family members of Nowland were present at the New South Wales Supreme Court to hear the delivery of the verdict by the jury on Wednesday (Nov&nbsp;27).

Their lawyer issued a statement in which they thanked the judge, jury and the prosecutors and asked for privacy.

"The family will take some time to come to terms with the jury’s confirmation that Clare’s death at the hands of a serving NSW police officer was a criminal and unjustified act," the statement read.

In the trial, evidence was submitted to prove that Nowland was not formally diagnosed with dementia and had started showing signs of cognitive decline for some months.&nbsp;

It was also said that she sometimes showed aggressive behaviour towards healthcare workers.

The police officer will remain on the bill till he is sentenced.

<h2>Here's what happened on the fateful day</h2>

On May 17, 2023, White received a call from Yallambee Nursing Home in Cooma after someone found Nowland walking with a sharp knife.

The woman was not putting down the knife even after being asked to do so for several hours and was risking the lives of staff and other patients.

It was said that Nowland weighed less than 50 kilograms when she was tasered and was described as "frail" by the police.

A closed-circuit video was submitted to the jury in which the entire incident was recorded.

In the video, White was heard asking the woman again and again to place the knife on the table.

“You see this?” White asked her. “This is a Taser. Drop it now,” said the officer. After some more appeals, he said to her “you’re gonna get tased.”

In the next moment, White was heard saying, “Nah, bugger it” as he deployed the Taser.

His wife passed away in 1986.

The late Queen Elizabeth sent him a birthday card every year since he turned 100 until she died in 2022.

Tinniswood had a regular diet, although he delighted in eating his favourite battered fish and chips&nbsp;every Friday. He said there was no secret to his long life, and called it “just luck.”

World’s oldest man passes away at 112 in England

The House of Representatives in Australia on Wednesday (Nov 27) cleared the bill which bans children, below the age of 16, from accessing social media platforms.&nbsp;

The first-of-its-kind legislation has now been left to the Senate to be made into a law.

The bill, which makes social media platforms like TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, X and Instagram liable for fines of nearly 50 million Australian dollars ($33 million) if a systemic failure is found on their side in preventing young children from creating accounts on these platforms, was supported by major parties.&nbsp;

The legislation was passed by 102 to 13 votes. If the bill turns into a law, one year would be given to the platforms to make a plan on how they will implement the age restrictions&nbsp;before any kind of penalties are enforced on them.

Speaking in the Parliament, Opposition lawmaker Dan Tehan said that the government had decided to include the amendments in the Senate which will bolster privacy protections.&nbsp;

The platforms will not be permitted to compel users to provide government-issued identity documents which include driver’s licenses or passports.&nbsp;

The platforms will also not be able to ask for digital identification through a government system.

Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said that the bill will be debated in the Senate later on Wednesday (Nov 27).

<h2>Here's what critiques say about the bill</h2>

As per the critiques, the lawmakers have rushed the decision through Parliament without adequate scrutiny. They said that the bill can create privacy risks for users of all ages and will take away the authority of the parents to decide what is best for their children.

It has also been argued by critics that the ban would isolate children and they would be deprived of social media's positive aspects and will push them to the dark web.

They added that the children will become reluctant to report the harms of social media. Meanwhile, independent lawmaker Zoe Daniel said the legislation would “make zero difference to the harms that are inherent to social media.”

“The true object of this legislation is not to make social media safe by design, but to make parents and voters feel like the government is doing something about it,” Daniel said while speaking at the Parliament.

Social media platforms had appealed to Australia to delay the voting on the legislation by at least a year.

Meanwhile, career-networking site LinkedIn said to the Australian lawmakers their platform is too boring for kids to warrant its inclusion.

"LinkedIn simply does not have content interesting and appealing to minors," said the Microsoft-owned company, in its submission to the Australian Senate committee.

A source close to the matter said that the three were being freed in a swap with Beijing for three Chinese nationals in US custody who were not identified.

Swidan was detained in late 2012 on a business trip to China on drug charges. His family and supporters say there was never any evidence he had drugs and that his driver and translator had blamed him.

In his early time in detention, Swidan was deprived of sleep and food and lost more than 100 pounds (45 kilograms), according to Dui Hua, a group that supports prisoners in China.

Swidan's mother Katherine, who lives in Texas, addressed a congressional hearing in September and accused the Biden administration of ignoring his plight.&nbsp;

"Our loved ones are not bargaining chips or political pawns; they are human beings whose rights and freedoms must be upheld and protected," she said.

Kai Li, a naturalized American born in Shanghai who ran a business exporting aircraft technology, was detained in 2016 and convicted of espionage for allegedly sending state secrets to US authorities.&nbsp;

He says he was sharing information routinely available on the internet as part of routine compliance with US export regulations.&nbsp;

Leung, a US citizen in his late 70s with permanent residency in Hong Kong, was also convicted of espionage. China said little about his case when he was first detained in 2021 but later accused him of spying on Chinese officials on behalf of the United States.

Tanzanian opposition party Chadema on Wednesday said three of its members were killed in incidents linked to local elections and accused the authorities of rigging the vote.

Chadema chairman Freeman Mbowe said on X that one of its candidates, Modestus Timbisimilwa, was shot dead by police in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam as he attempted to stop "fake and invalid ballots" being delivered to a polling station.

Chadema said another candidate, George Juma Mohamed, was also shot dead at his home in Mkese in central Tanzania the night before.

Police said the death occurred when a group of prison officers was called in to deal with a clash between supporters of Chadema and the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party and fired "warning shots".

Another Chadema official, Steven Chalamila, was killed in a machete attack at his home in Tunduma near the border with Zambia, also late on Tuesday, according to the party.

An AFP journalist in the western city of Kigoma saw voters clashing over alleged fake ballots, leading to arrests.

"We believe these acts are being carried out with the directives and full blessings of (President Samia Suluhu Hassan) and her government," said Mbowe.

Only far-right minister Ben Gvir voted against the plan.

A senior US official with knowledge of the negotiations said the deal is meant to facilitate the peaceful withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon over the next 60 days.

US President Joe Biden also confirmed that the deal had been reached, saying that it “is designed to be a permanent cessation of hostilities.” Speaking from the White House Rose Garden, Biden said both countries accepted the US proposal “to end the devastating conflict” between Israel and Hezbollah. Biden hailed the deal as "good news" and a "new start" for Lebanon.

Meanwhile, Beirut's southern suburbs were pounded by airstrikes less than an hour before the truce between Israel and Hezbollah comes into force.

About two hours before that, the Israeli army issued evacuation warnings for three buildings in the southern Beirut suburbs of Bourj Al-Barajne and Ghbaire.

Israel struck the heart of the Lebanese capital, while Hezbollah claimed attacks on northern Israel after the truce was announced.

Before submitting the deal for approval, Netanyahu said that it still relies on the actions of Hezbollah.
