Mauritania: Mohamed ul Ghazouani re-elected president
Mauritania president Mohamed ul Ghazouani comfortably won re-election, receiving 56.12 percent of the vote in the first round of the presidential poll. The victory gives the former army chief a second term as head of the country, seen as a rock of relative stability in Africa’s Sahel region. Mauritania has not recorded an attack on its soil in recent years and Ghazouani, who currently chairs the African union, has promised to manage threats from such groups.
