Hawaii's Kīlauea volcano experienced its 53rd eruptive episode, sending lava fountains soaring about 500 feet high and pushing a smoke plume up to 18,000 feet. The activity lasted roughly 9.6 hours before pausing, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
