The European Parliament voted 334-324 on January 21, 2026, to suspend ratification of the recently signed EU-Mercosur trade agreement and refer it to the Court of Justice of the EU for a legality review under Article 218(11). This narrow decision, amid opposition from France and others over agriculture and environmental standards, pauses the approval process potentially for over a year, despite the deal's recent signing after 25 years of talks.
