A South Korean court on Tuesday denied an arrest warrant request for Samsung Group heir Jay Y. Lee after prosecutors accused him of accounting fraud and stock manipulation.

The ruling provided temporary relief for the vice chairman of Samsung Electronics. But he may face further pressure from the case at a time when the world's top maker of smartphones and memory chips contends with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on demand.

Prosecutors on Thursday asked the court to issue an arrest warrant against Lee, culminating a probe into accounting fraud and a controversial 2015 merger of two Samsung affiliates that they said helped facilitate Lee's plan to assume greater control of the group.

After the hearing, he is expected to head to a detention centre to await the judge's decision, expected on Monday or early Tuesday.

Misconduct Allegations

Samsung on Friday denied the allegation of stock-manipulation against Lee, saying it was "beyond common sense" to claim Lee was involved in the decision-making.

In a further statement over the weekend, the group said the lengthy probe is weighing on management, which is in a “crisis” at a time when the coronavirus pandemic and US-China trade disputes are adding to the uncertainty.

The company declined to make Lee available for comment.

This won’t be an unfamiliar process for Lee, nor will it be the end of his legal troubles if the prosecutors’ request is denied.&nbsp;

He served in jail for about one year until February 2018 for his role in a bribery scandal in which he was accused of giving horses as gifts to win support from the government of former President Park Geun-Hye for the merger.

The merger increased his control of the group, and of its crown jewel, Samsung Electronics Co, South Korea's biggest company. His father, Lee Kun-hee, has been ailing for some time.

"If he is arrested, this will further hurt the reputation of Lee and Samsung. There will more questions about his legitimacy as the CEO and successor of the company," Chang Sea-jin, a business professor at Korea Advanced Institute of Science &amp; Technology.

"The public would think, 'Oh he may have done something wrong again."

South Korean court denies arrest warrant request for Samsung heir

Samsung has been on a blitz of sorts in 2020. For many months now Xiaomi and Realme have dominated the budget segment (under Rs 15,000) in the smartphone industry. Samsung is hell-bent on changing that with the recently launched Galaxy M21. It’s a phone that borrows design cues from its predecessor Galaxy M20 and its immediate successors Galaxy M30s/M31, at an economical price of Rs 12,999. &nbsp;

The Galaxy M21 is a smartphone that offers a massive 6,000mAh battery, an AMOLED screen, decent RAM and storage options, a 48-megapixel rear camera and weighs just 164 grams.&nbsp;

While the M21 borrows a lot from other Samsung M-series smartphones, does it have what it takes to stand on its own two feet? Read on to find out.&nbsp;

Design and Display: Plain old boring&nbsp;

Thanks to the polycarbonate body of the Galaxy M21 that covers the entire back and chassis, the smartphone is extremely lightweight. Though this doesn’t feel premium at all. The plastic body lends to its durability. The smartphone is very ergonomically designed and it is a treat to use in one’s hand. &nbsp;

Thanks to the glossy nature of the plastic, the phone is very susceptible to fingerprints. If you choose to use the Galaxy M21 without a case then be prepared to be constantly wiping the back of the smartphone to make it look new and shiny.&nbsp;

<img alt="Samsung" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="b8ff02ea-7fc8-46f7-af9e-b24db312c1e5" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/samsung5.jpg" />

The Galaxy M21 comes with a volume rocker and power button on the right, the SIM card slot on the back and the USB-Type C (thank you Samsung) port, 3.5mm headphone jack and speaker grille on the bottom. On the back is a capacitive fingerprint scanner. &nbsp;

There’s also no camera bump on the Galaxy M21. In a world of Galaxy S20s, this sure does feel refreshing. On the whole, the Galaxy M21 is dull and monotonous. It definitely won’t stand out next to an array of competitors in any mobile phone shop.&nbsp;

The display, on the other hand, is the standout feature (other than the battery) of the Galaxy M21. Samsung’s displays have always been its strong point and that doesn’t change with the M21. You get a 6.4-inch, full HD+ AMOLED (1440x2400 resolution) display with Gorilla Glass 3 protection. It’s got punchy colours and gets bright enough to be used while out and about on a walk. Furthermore, it’s got good viewing angles and is Widevine L1 certified which means that it’ll be a pleasure consuming media from OTT platforms such as Amazon Prime and Netflix.&nbsp;

It may not have a 90Hz high-refresh-rate display but that isn’t something that has trickled down into the budget segment yet.&nbsp;

Performance and Software: Advantage over Realme and Xiaomi&nbsp;

Sadly though, performance is one area where the Galaxy M21 falters. The Exynos 9611 (coupled with 4GB/6GB of RAM) that powers the smartphone isn’t snappy and lags quite a bit when trying to multitask.&nbsp;

It’ll handle everyday tasks without a problem but when you try to open multiple tabs in Google Chrome while using the camera and listening to some audio, it sure will stutter along. The smartphone also tends to heat up slightly when taking a lot of photos of recording long videos. &nbsp;

Playing games like PUBG, Need For Speed, and others will not work on their highest settings. You’ll have to reduce the in-game graphics so that you can play the games without any lag.&nbsp;

<img alt="Samsung" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="563a4172-bebe-4ba5-abfc-b9556a83f07c" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/samsung4.jpg" />

Samsung’s One UI 2.0 is by far the standout Android skin amongst all the budget players, especially Realme’s Reamle UI and Xiaomi’s MIUI. The software is feature-rich and you get consistency across all Samsung smartphones. It’s got a native dark theme that pairs well with the AMOLED screen.&nbsp;

The mono speaker on the smartphone is loud. At loud volumes though, it isn’t as clear and you can hear a little bit off crackling. The earpiece quality is pretty good.&nbsp;

Battery life: Most excellent&nbsp;

The Galaxy M21 comes with a huge 6,000mAh battery that doesn’t weigh down the smartphone at all. The smartphone lasts almost two days with a good 5-hour plus screen-on-time. The one downside is that the Galaxy M21 takes over two and a half hours to charge from 0 per cent -100 per cent.&nbsp;

The long charge times are negated by the fact that the smartphone can last really long on a single charge.&nbsp;

Cameras: So-so&nbsp;

The Galaxy M21 has a triple-camera setup at the back. It has a 48-megapixel main sensor, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens (123* field of view) and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. On the front is a 20-megapixel sensor for all those selfies one takes on a daily basis.&nbsp;

Over the last few months, Samsung’s budget range of smartphones has gotten better and better in the camera department. &nbsp;

The 48-megapixel main sensor on the Galaxy M21 is excellent. With sufficient lighting, the pixel-binned photos came out great. The colours were vibrant and crisp. The close-ups also offered good depth-of-field. Taking some landscapes and you’ll be impressed with the dynamic range as well. Now it isn’t without its faults. &nbsp;

The ultra-wide sensor comes with a fixed focus and that’s a huge disappointment. Furthermore, a lot of noise is there and some details are lost.&nbsp;

<img alt="Samsung M21" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="26e53618-4e23-4fde-99f5-c257196d5414" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/Samsung1.jpg" />

The depth-sensor takes fairly decent shots but some of the in-focus items are sometimes slightly blurred and that’s a disappointment.&nbsp;

The 48-megapixel shots have some major issues. First, the colours looked weaker/faded and if you look at the pixel-binned photos and the 48-megapixel shots side-by-side, you’ll notice a huge colour temperature difference.&nbsp;

Finally, I’ll end on a positive note. Disable all the beautification features (trust me, you don’t want any of them) and you’ll get good, crisp selfies, that you can share on social media and spam all of your friends on WhatsApp.

<img alt="Samsung M21" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="cf27a43e-c5c5-4085-9a62-0117a57f61a9" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/samsung2.jpg" />

On the video front, you only get the main sensor to shoot from. Samsung, for whatever reason, doesn’t allow you to shoot with the ultra-wide sensor. Maybe this is where they are cutting corners. Nonetheless, videos come out decently good on auto mode with the anti-shake mode turned off. Turn on the super-steady mode and the videos look washed out.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Verdict: Is this a worthy budget smartphone in today’s market?&nbsp;

Compared to Samsung’s own Galaxy M31, I’d say this isn’t as good a deal. The Galaxy M31 has a better design - albeit slightly - and better low-light performance. Significantly, it has more RAM (the Galaxy M31 starts at 6GB and there is an 8GB variant as well) than the Galaxy M21’s measly 4GB.&nbsp;

Still, there is a lot going for the Galaxy M21. It’s got a great AMOLED display with HD streaming support, a massive 6,000mAh battery (on par with the M31) and fast biometric unlock - whether with face unlock or with the capacitive fingerprint sensor. It’s a worthy smartphone in today’s market.&nbsp;

At Rs 12,999, one feels that Samsung could have gone a little more aggressively and it a thousand rupees cheaper. That would have definitely given it the edge against the Realme 6 that at just Rs 13,999 offers a faster CPU, a fluid display and faster-wired charging. Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 9 Pro also starts at Rs 13,999 and offers great performance albeit with crippled software experience.&nbsp;

Both the Realme 6 and Redmi Note 9 Pro offer better gaming performance than Samsung’s Galaxy M21.&nbsp;

For those that have brand loyalty, or can’t get a Realme/Xiaomi where they are because of lockdown rules, the Galaxy M21 will do them just fine. If you can stretch your budget to the Galaxy M31, I’d recommend getting that instead but it is a hefty Rs 3,000 more though.&nbsp;

Samsung Galaxy M21 review: The best Samsung smartphone under Rs 15,000

Social media giant Facebook recently removed over 200 accounts with links to white supremacy groups in the United States.

People using these accounts encouraged people to join the protests across the country, but many asked them to carry weapons and firearms to the protests.

Facebook found that these accounts, both on Instagram and the parent company, were affiliated to Proud Boys and American Guard, two white supremacy hate groups that are already banned on the platforms.

Reportedly, the company had been monitoring these accounts for a while but took the shot when they saw how the accounts were being manipulated to incite violence in the protests.

"We saw that these groups were planning to rally supporters and members to physically go to the protests and in some cases were preparing to go with weapons," said Brian Fishman, Facebook's director of counterterrorism and dangerous organizations policy, in a statement.

“Approximately”, 190 accounts were removed. No other detail was made public, like the location of the people sharing the messages or of the target audience.

Facebook prohibits hate speech on its platforms, which is why it had banned these organisations on its platforms earlier. The company further said that they will continue to monitor and prevent such accounts to resurge.

Many people linked to white supremacy groups were removed from Facebook earlier this week, after it was found that they were posing to be ANTIFA members.

The murder of George Floyd in the United States has triggered protests not only in the country, but across the world. Protesters are demanding justice for Floyd while calling for an end to systemic racism which targets black people across the globe.

Dozens of scientists who are conducting research, backed by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, have advised the CEO to atleast flag the posts published by the US President Donald Trump.

The researchers believe that the social media giant should&nbsp;not allow Donald Trump use&nbsp;the social media platform to "spread both misinformation and incendiary statements."

The researchers have asked Zuckerberg to consider the sensitive time that the country is going through and ensure "stricter policies on misinformation and incendiary language that harms people."

Facebook will review its content policies, says Zuckerberg after backlash

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced that the company will review its policies after facing widespread backlash,&nbsp;&nbsp;including from its own employees, over the decision to leave up controversial posts from Donald Trump.

The social media giant will look at improving content policies while also building products to advance racial justice, the CEO said on Friday in response to the protests in the United States.

The announcement, which came in the form of a letter to employees, appeared aimed at quelling anger inside the company that was so severe it prompted some to quit.

The outrage was sparked when Zuckerberg said Facebook would not remove or flag Trump's recent posts that appeared to encourage violence against those protesting police racism.

The global economy is hung over badly with the US-China&nbsp;trade war, the pandemic and now the US may risk sparking a new trade war.

The US is going to investigate some of its closest allies from the European Union to India for digital tax. The US says American tech companies are being intentionally targetted if found guilty countries may face the wrath of US tariffs.
&nbsp;
Coronavirus has pushed the world online and where there are people, there's business. Right now, more than 1.8 billion people purchase goods online. Global online sales are worth 2.5 trillion dollars per year with COVID-19, it could rise to over $4four trillion by next year. Digital giants now pocket the cash this huge cash.

However, now governments want a share of the pie. Many countries plan to impose a digital tax and America is protesting. The US wants to investigate countries which plan to introduce digital taxes. It says this is an instrument to target American tech giants.

But the debate is still on, although the real impact is likely to be felt by consumers and small traders if taxes are imposed on digital transactions, companies will surely look to transfer the burden to their customers be it online shoppers, online advertisers, online traders - many of whom run medium and small scale companies. Ultimately, they will have to indirectly pay the digital levies.

The US argues many of the American tech companies are already compliant with the respective country's tax regime. So, there's no need for an additional tax. The US is targeting some of the world's most valuable online markets, for American tech companies that's where the impact of taxes will be felt the most.

The list of countries includes India, these countries say American tech giants evade taxes by basing themselves in low-tax countries. Their global supply chains put the local online platforms at a disadvantage. To be fair it is not unique to online companies. Every other business ranging from power generators to shoemakers uses such ploys to gain a foothold in newer markets and to save taxes.

America says it will investigate digital taxes to protect its companies. It's not aggression, just self interest but what about the self interest of other countries? How can $4 trillion worth of transactions be left untaxed?

No country with a large market and multiplying online sales will give up the chance. So far, the US has said the investigation is going to be consultative meaning countries will get a chance to defend their digital tax policy.

However, the fear is it may spark another trade war with the US this time targetting its allies - the EU, UK, France which has postponed the collection of digital tax to 2021. Over 140 countries have come together to try and find a solution to the problem of digital tax but can they avert a digital trade war?

Singapore plans to soon launch a wearable device for novel coronavirus contact tracing. It says if the device turns out to be successful, it will be distributed to all of its 5.7 million residents.

The anti-China sentiment is growing stronger in the midst of coronavirus pandemic. The impact of this sentiment is now evident in technology too.

Recently, a new smartphone application called “Remove China Apps” surfaced on the Google Play Store.This is a tool to delete all Chinese apps from your phone.

Its developers say it’s for “educational purposes only”, but the app is a byproduct of the global outcry against China. Many countries have now started calling for decreasing their dependence on China, and Chinese products.&nbsp;

India too, has followed suit with this application, alongside Prime Minister’s calls for a self-reliant India. The border standoff with China in Ladakh is also adding to the anti-China sentiment in the country.&nbsp;From Chinese food to Chinese goods, Indians are now boycotting all things China.

The hashtag #BoycottChina on Twitter now features thousands of posts advocating a complete boycott of Chinese products.

The Chinese even roped in Jackie Chan to win Indian hearts.

However, it is proving hard to simmer the public anger against China for negligence in the early stages of coronavirus pandemic.

The anti-China sentiment is growing stronger in the midst of coronavirus pandemic. The impact of this sentiment is now evident in technology too. Recently, a new smartphone application called “Remove China Apps” surfaced on the Google Play Store.

Its developers say it’s for “educational purposes only”, but the app is a byproduct of the global outcry against China. Many countries have now started calling for decreasing their dependence on China, and Chinese products. India too, has followed suit with this application, alongside Prime Minister’s calls for a self-reliant India. The border standoff with China in Ladakh is also adding to the anti-China sentiment in the country. From Chinese food to Chinese goods, Indians are now boycotting all things China. The hashtag #BoycottChina on Twitter now features thousands of posts advocating a complete boycott of Chinese products. Chalo China ko haraye.. Apart from naming specific Chinese applications, the user even suggested alternatives. Even Indian film stars have hopped on the trend. I am consciously going to stop using everything that is Chinese. As they are a part of most of the things we use, it will take time but I know, one day I’ll be Chinese free. You should try it too ... — Arshad Warsi (@ArshadWarsi) May 30, 2020 × Actor Arshad Warsi wrote that he is “consciously going to stop using everything that is Chinese”. He wants his followers to try this too. Bilkul. Beshaq. #BoycottChina. #CKMKB — Ranvir Shorey (@RanvirShorey) May 29, 2020 × Ranvir Shorey was more direct. “Absolutely. Without a doubt” he wrote in Hindi on twitter. The #BoycottChina campaign only represents the growing public anger against Beijing. Chinese diplomats tried to counter the angst with social media posts of their own. #EidMubarak to you all! May this Eid bring joy and love to you and your loved ones. While global coronavirus locked are being lifted, restrictions are being eased and normalcy is gradually returning, it has become clear that the world has to live with the virus and in order to do that it needs to arm itself with the right weapons.

A 3D&nbsp;company in Istanbul has a solution for those who are tired of weraing masks all the time.

It has invented a mask tool which can be attached behind the&nbsp;head to relieve the pressure on the&nbsp;ears and the&nbsp;nose.

Eating is also possible while wearing a mask, as per an invention&nbsp;in Israel. The mask opens up automatically or using a hand remote.

When a patient presents an ID-card, the robot prepares a sampling kit and performs the swab test.

The robot uses cameras to find the right part of the throat which not&nbsp;only protects health workers from being exposed to the virus but&nbsp;also helps ensure accuracy.

Dominique Pouzol, member of "59 Rivoli" artists collective and creator of "deconfinement hats", asked about song dynasty inspiration, saying: "apparently back in the day, this was already used to prevent officials who wore these hats from whispering. and so, there was already this notion of social distancing, of not getting too close."

New challenges demand new solutions. This is what the new normal looks like.

Google search in year: These are India's most trending topics of 2018

Google's top India trends throw up some interesting information about the way the country consumes internet and what concerns Indian netizens the most.

A look at Google's 'Year in Search' for India shows that Indians grappled with how to send stickers to other&nbsp;contacts on WhatsApp, making it the top 'How to' query on Google search in India.&nbsp;

Scroll further down the list and one learns that Indian netizens also googled how to link Aadhaar with mobile number, how to make a rangoli, how to port a mobile number and how to invest in bitcoin.&nbsp;

Last year, a look at the same list cracked us up as the top 'How to' query on Google India was '<a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/google-trends-2017-indians-grappled-with-how-to-take-a-screenshot-26665">how to take a screenshot</a>.'

The previous year, Prabhas starer Bahubali-2 dominated the search list in India. 7 out of top 10 overall searches in the country were movie-based, reinstating India's love for masala cinema.

Ironically, this year, just one movie-based search made to the top Google searches in India -- superstar Rajini and Akshay Kumar starrer 'Robot 2.0'.&nbsp;

Interestingly, five out of ten top overall Google searches &nbsp;in India were sports-related. While FIFA World Cup 2018 topped the list, IPL was the third top searched topic in India. Karnataka election results made to the list, five-state Assembly polls did not. &nbsp;
