New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has emerged as an unexpected force in the November 3 US midterm elections. The 34-year-old democratic socialist has already demonstrated that his influence can extend beyond City Hall. In June, three candidates he backed in New York Democratic congressional primaries defeated establishment-supported rivals, including two sitting lawmakers. The results strengthened Mamdani's position within the party and raised questions about whether his brand of politics could reshape Democratic campaigns elsewhere. But the Mamdani factor cuts both ways. Progressive activists see his appeal as evidence that Democrats can mobilise voters around affordability and a break with established political leadership. Republicans, meanwhile, have sought to make him a symbol of what they describe as the Democratic Party's shift to the left. Recent controversy over his comments on the October 7 anniversary has also exposed the political risks of his positions on Israel and Gaza. Also read | What is Gerrymandering? US midterm elections: Why Zohran Mamdani's influence could become a headache for Democrats and Republicans

Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Monday (Oct 27) praised Zohran Mamdani, the frontrunner in New York City's mayoral polls, calling him the "future" of the Democratic Party in the US. It is pertinent to note that Mamdani is a critic of US President Donald Trump and Musk was a staunch Trump ally, who has recently parted ways from the US president. Trump had earlier called Mamdani a "100 per cent communist lunatic." Trump has also claimed in the past that Mamdani “looks TERRIBLE, his voice is grating, he's not very smart.” Taking to X, Musk shared a clip of New York Governor Kathy Hochul endorsing Mamdani's candidacy and wrote, "Zohran is the future of the Democratic Party". However, this may not be Musk's endorsement of Mamdani, as he is a Republican. Musk, who is known for his humour seemed to be sarcastic, as he shared another post stating that Mamdani has supported policies such as higher taxes on wealthier white neighborhoods, defunding the police, limiting police response to domestic violence, cutting gifted education programs, and closing Rikers Island prison.

Apart from Kathy Hochul, Mamdani received the backing from US Senator Bernie Sanders, House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, US Representative Jerrold Nadler, who represents Manhattan’s Upper West Side, and former Vice President Kamala Harris. In-person voting begun on Saturday and is continuing for one of the most closely followed US elections this year — the New York City mayoral race. New Yorkers started casting their votes for Democrat Zohran Mamdani, Republican Curtis Sliwa, and former Governor Andrew Cuomo, running as an independent. Meanwhile, ahead of the voting, in an emotional speech Mamdani slammed his opponents for “racist" attacks and defended his Muslim faith. Pledging to further embrace his Muslim identity, Mamdani spoke about the “indignities” long faced by the city’s Muslim population. He was encircled by faith leaders outside a Bronx mosque where he mentioned that he was advised to keep his faith to himself when he entered politics. Holding back his tears and in a choking voice, Mamdani shared about his aunt “who stopped taking the subway after September 11th because she did not feel safe in her hijab.” He was targeted for his remarks by many in Republican Party including Vice President JD Vance.

In his attempt to block Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani from becoming the city’s next mayor, US President Donald Trump may offer a role to New York Mayor Eric Adams. The mayor even met Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff earlier this week to discuss this potential opportunity. As per CNN, one of the strong possibilities re that Adams may get the role of an ambassador in the Trump administration. Although people who claimed this to CNN said that nothing has been finalised yet. If Adams were to get a role under Trump, he would automatically leave the New York mayoral race. United States President Donald Trump has backed former Governor Andrew Cuomo after the latter decided to run in the New York City mayoral race as an independent. 'Better behave, otherwise': Trump issues yet another warning to Zohran Mamdani. Here's why

After US President Donald Trump vowed to intervene to “save” the New York City from the “communist lunatic” Democratic candidate for mayor, Zohran Mamdani has hit back saying that he is fanning flames of division. Stating that it is Trump is attacking him because the president is desperate to distract from his war on working people, Mamdani said that he won't stop and “will fight back.” Notably, Trump did not name Mamdani in his Truth Social post on July 2 but termed him as “Communist lunatic” - words that he has used for Mamdani previously. While speaking at NY Hotel and Trades Council, Mamdani said, “Yesterday, Donald Trump said that I should be arrested. He said that I should be deported. He said that I should be denaturalized. And he said those things about me, someone who stands to be the first immigrant mayor of this city in generations, someone who would also be the first Muslim and the first South Asian mayor in this city's history. Less so because of who I am, because of where I come from, because of how I look or how I speak, and more so because he wants to distract from what I fight for. I fight for working people.” Mamdani added, “Ultimately it is easier for him to fan the flames of division than to acknowledge the ways in which he has betrayed those working class Americans not just in this city but across this country and the ways in which he continues to betray them.”

Mamdani also criticised Trump's “big beautiful” tax bill that will be passed by the House soon, saying, “We know that he would rather speak about me than speak about the legislation that he is shepherding through Washington… Legislation that will quite literally take health care away from Americans. Legislation that will steal food from the hungry. Legislation that looks to build upon one of the largest transfers of wealth we've seen in recent history in his first administration and do it once again for the very Americans who have had enough.” A day ago, Mamdani said that he will not be intimidated by Trump's attacks.

Trump targets Mamdani
Trump began targeting Mamdani shortly after election day last week, calling him “a 100% Communist Lunatic”. He also insulted Mamdani’s intelligence and described his speaking voice as “grating”. Earlier on Tuesday, Trump said that if Mamdani prevents ICE agents from conducting their operations to deport people, then "we’ll have to arrest him." He also mentioned false claims that Mamdani entered the country illegally. On a question of Mamdani's possible deportation, Trump said, “We’re going to be watching that very carefully, and a lot of people are saying he’s here illegally. We’re going to look at everything.”
