<h2>Need for a strategic change</h2>
<p>Zambia must break free from its dependency on China by strengthening regulatory oversight, diversifying investment partnerships, and pursuing international support for debt restructuring. Regulatory bodies must be granted full autonomy and financial backing to ensure compliance with environmental and labour laws. The government must also impose stricter penalties on foreign corporations that violate Zambian regulations, including mandatory reparations for environmental damage and the potential revocation of mining licenses.<br><br>Economic diversification is crucial in reducing Zambia&rsquo;s vulnerability to Chinese financial leverage. Encouraging investment in industries beyond copper, such as renewable energy, manufacturing, and agriculture, can provide alternative revenue streams and reduce reliance on mining exports. Furthermore, Zambia must foster stronger trade relationships with regional partners and Western investors to counterbalance China&rsquo;s influence.<br><br>Debt restructuring efforts must be pursued with a clear strategy to prevent future dependency. By seeking multilateral assistance through organisations such as the IMF and African Development Bank, Zambia can negotiate more equitable debt repayment terms that do not compromise its national sovereignty. Strengthening regional alliances within the African Union will also provide Zambia with collective bargaining power in debt negotiations.<br><br>Zambia must also demand greater environmental accountability from foreign investors. Legislative reforms should require full disclosure of environmental impact assessments before mining licenses are granted. Furthermore, civil society organizations and grassroots activism must play a more significant role in advocating for stronger environmental protections, ensuring that local communities are no longer sidelined in decision-making processes.</p>
<h2>What&rsquo;s next for Zambia?</h2>

External Affairs Minister&nbsp;S Jaishankar&nbsp;said that the aid, weighing approximately 3.5 tonnes, comprises water purification supplies, chlorine tablets, and other things.</p>

<p>"India&nbsp;sends Humanitarian Assistance to&nbsp;Zambia&nbsp;in wake of the&nbsp;cholera&nbsp;outbreak. The aid weighing approx 3.5 tonnes comprises water purification supplies, chlorine tablets and ORS sachets. Was handed over today by our High Commissioner to the Government of&nbsp;Zambia," EAM Jaishankar said in a post on X.</p>

<p>India&nbsp;sent the first consignment of&nbsp;humanitarian aid&nbsp;on February 6 via a commercial cargo aircraft to&nbsp;Zambia&nbsp;following the&nbsp;cholera&nbsp;outbreak in the country, as per the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).</p>

<p>The aid weighing approximately 3.5 tonnes comprised water purification supplies, chlorine tablets, and hydration in the form of ORS sachets, the MEA said.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the European Union (EU) has said it will provide Euro one million in support to&nbsp;Zambia&nbsp;in response to the ongoing&nbsp;cholera&nbsp;epidemic, which is putting around 3.5 million people at risk.</p>

<p>The emergency funding will support humanitarian partners UNICEF and the WHO in their efforts to address immediate and critical needs related to health, water, hygiene, and sanitation, as per the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO).</p>

<p>As of January 31, 2024, the cumulative number of&nbsp;cholera&nbsp;cases in the country stood at 16,526 with 613 deaths. There is a high fatality rate of close to 4 per cent, with most of the cases and deaths reported in Lusaka Province.</p>

<p>As the rainy season in the country is expected to continue until May, further floods due to heavy rains in Lusaka's urban and peri-urban areas could re-ignite the spread of&nbsp;cholera&nbsp;cases.</p>

<p>Cholera, a bacterial disease, is usually spread through contaminated water. The disease causes severe diarrhoea and dehydration.<br />

The aid weighing approximately 3.5 tonnes comprised water purification supplies, chlorine tablets, and hydration in the form of ORS sachets, the MEA said. Meanwhile, the European Union (EU) has said it will provide Euro one million in support to Zambia in response to the ongoing cholera epidemic, which is putting around 3.5 million people at risk. The emergency funding will support humanitarian partners UNICEF and the WHO in their efforts to address immediate and critical needs related to health, water, hygiene, and sanitation, as per the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO). As of January 31, 2024, the cumulative number of cholera cases in the country stood at 16,526 with 613 deaths. There is a high fatality rate of close to 4 per cent, with most of the cases and deaths reported in Lusaka Province. As the rainy season in the country is expected to continue until May, further floods due to heavy rains in Lusaka's urban and peri-urban areas could re-ignite the spread of cholera cases. Cholera, a bacterial disease, is usually spread through contaminated water. The disease causes severe diarrhoea and dehydration. (With inputs from agencies)

<p>The wooden structure found is made up of two interlocking logs of a large-fruited willow tree with a notch deliberately crafted into the upper piece to allow them to fit together at right angles around 476,000 years ago, said the researchers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The oldest wooden structure, before the announcement out of Zambia, was just 9,000 years old. Meanwhile, the oldest known wooden artefact which was discovered in Israel, is said to be a 780,000-year-old fragment of plank.</p>

<p>The latest discovery was made at Kalambo Falls, on Lake Tanganyika in northern Zambia near the border with Tanzania, a site which has been investigated by scientists since the 1950s.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per the recent study, researchers, in addition to the world’s oldest wooden structure also found stone tools below the river, three of which were covered in clay deposits above the river level.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It is also worth noting that these wooden artefacts survived hundreds of thousands of years due to the permanently elevated water table since the structure was discovered in 2019 above a 235-metre-high (770-foot) waterfall on the banks of the Zambian river.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What does the discovery suggest?</strong></h2>

<p>While scientists are not sure what the wooden structure was used for, they believe it to be a part of a wooden platform used as a walkway, to keep food or firewood dry. It could also be used as a base to build a shelter since researchers also found a digging stick and other wooden tools at the same site.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The framework could have supported a walkway or platform raised above the seasonally wet surroundings. A platform could have multiple purposes including storage of firewood, tools, food and as a foundation on which to place a hut,” Larry Barham, an archaeologist from the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom told AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Scientists have also noted in the study that the interlocking logs have “no known parallels” in the African or Eurasian Palaeolithic.” The recent discovery also pushes back the dates of the earliest examples of woodworking predating the emergence of our own species, Homo sapiens.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The earliest evidence of Homo sapiens is from around 300,000 years ago. The discovery has “changed how I thought about these people,” Barham told AFP, adding that they “transformed their surroundings to make life easier, even if it was only by making a platform to sit on by the river to do their daily chores.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>He added, “They used their intelligence, imagination and skills to create something they'd never seen before, something that had never previously existed.” This also suggests an abstract level of thinking and “probably language,” said Barham.<br />

<p>Vice President Harris said in&nbsp;the news conference that&nbsp;her grandfather was a civil servant in India. "And in 1966, shortly after Zambia's independence, he came to Lusaka to serve as a director of relief measures and refugees. That was his title. He served as an adviser to Zambia's first president, Kenneth Kaunda. And he was an expert on refugee resettlement," she said.</p>

<p>"I remember my time here fondly. I was a child, so it is the memory of a child. But I remember being here and just how it felt, and the warmth and the excitement that was present. And, in fact, I was talking with my aunt recently, and she was reminding me of the relationships that she made when she was working at -- then it was called Lusaka Central Hospital -- when she was working there with the physicians there," Vice President Harris added.</p>

The US Vice President Kamala Harris visited the Gopalan family home in Lusaka and paid tribute to her maternal grandfather PV Gopalan, a member of the Indian Foreign Service, while on a visit to Zambia.

As you know, I visited Zambia, Mr President, as a young girl when my grandfather worked here," Vice President Harris told reporters in Lusaka at a joint news conference with Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema, reported the PTI. Vice President Harris said in the news conference that her grandfather was a civil servant in India. "And in 1966, shortly after Zambia's independence, he came to Lusaka to serve as a director of relief measures and refugees. That was his title. He served as an adviser to Zambia's first president, Kenneth Kaunda. And he was an expert on refugee resettlement," she said. "I remember my time here fondly. I was a child, so it is the memory of a child. But I remember being here and just how it felt, and the warmth and the excitement that was present. And, in fact, I was talking with my aunt recently, and she was reminding me of the relationships that she made when she was working at -- then it was called Lusaka Central Hospital -- when she was working there with the physicians there," Vice President Harris added. In January 1966, the Indian government sent PV Gopalan to Zambia to serve as the Director of Relief Measures and Refugees. He gave up his position as the director of the joint secretary's office in the Ministry of Rehabilitation of the Indian government in order to carry out these responsibilities. In July 1969, after reverting from the government of Zambia, he took over management of the Office of the Joint Secretary to the government of India in the Ministry of Rehabilitation. A White House official claimed that her family lived at 16 Independence Avenue while they were in Lusaka in the 1960s, but since addresses are now numbered differently, it was ultimately possible to locate them by using plot numbers from property surveys and public records. After much work by the Embassy and dead-ends in the search, the Embassy identified this location only a few days ago while the Vice President was in Accra, Ghana," the official said.
