Chief Minister of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh,&nbsp;Yogi Adityanath, on Saturday (Sep 14) made a big claim, saying that Varanasi's Gyanvapi mosque is actually a 'temple of Lord Shiva' and called it&nbsp;'Vishwanath'.&nbsp;

Amid the ongoing controversy over the mosque, the CM Yogi, while addressing a gathering at an event in UP's Gorakhpur, said, "Unfortunately, people call Gyanvapi a mosque, but it is actually 'Vishwanath' (Lord Shiva) himself".

He further said that the devotees visiting the holy site regret that this confusion over its true identity or name is the biggest issue, not only in terms of worshipping but also in national unity and integrity.&nbsp;

"Had our society ever understood and identified this hurdle in the past, our country would have never been colonised", the chief minister added.

<h2>The controversy&nbsp;</h2>

Some Hindu activists challenged that a temple existed earlier at the disputed Gyanvapi mosque site and was demolished in the 17th century following&nbsp;the orders of Muslim emperor Aurangzeb. The claim was, however, rejected by the Muslim side.&nbsp;

In February this year, a Varanasi court allowed Hindu devotees to worship inside the sealed basement of Gyanvapi mosque. According to the order, the devotees were allowed to offer prayers at 'Vyas Ka Tekhana', a prohibited area inside the mosque.&nbsp;

A resident of the north-Indian state of&nbsp;Uttar Pradesh assaulted his 19-year-old wife and gave her a "triple talaq" for praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his government and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.&nbsp;

His wife Maryam claimed that she was brutally tortured by her husband, mother-in-law and in-laws.&nbsp;

The man, Arshad, from UP's Bahraich, was also accused of beating her wife and throwing "hot dal (lentils)" at her.&nbsp;

An FIR was registered against her husband, Arshad, two brothers-in-law Farhan and Shafaf, sister-in-law Simran, mother-in-law Raisa and father-in-law Islam and her husband's sister Kulsum and a relative.&nbsp;

Maryam also accused&nbsp;her in-laws of&nbsp;trying to strangle her on the day her husband pronounced instant triple talaq.&nbsp;

Notably, the Indian government&nbsp;enacted a law against "triple talaq" in 2019, and declared it unconstitutional. If a Muslim man gives triple talaq to his wife, he is subject to imprisonment, as per the law.&nbsp;

"My father got me married with the consent of both the parties and by spending more than his means," said Maryam in a video, according to the news agency PTI. “After the marriage, when I went out in the city, I liked the roads of Ayodhya Dham, the beautification, the development and the atmosphere there. On this, I praised Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in front of my husband.”

Maryam stressed that she initially tried to file a complaint, however, was unsuccessful. Following this, she filed an online complaint through the integrated grievance redressal services portal and also wrote to CM Yogi on August 18.&nbsp;

Renuka Mishra is a 1990-batch IPS officer and has been replaced by the Director of Vigilance Establishment of the UP Police Rajeev Krishna.

Since last June, Renuka Mishra has remained appointed to the position. She was removed from the position of chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment &amp; Promotion Board (UPPRPB) by the Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday (Mar 5) after facing allegations regarding a question paper leak in the police constable recruitment examination.

After the allegations of paper leaks were raised by the aspirants, the government of Uttar Pradesh on February 24 cancelled the police constable recruitment examination, which was conducted on February 17 and 18 by the UPPRPB and announced that they will be conducting a retest in six months.

After there was a lapse in managing the paper leak case during the constable recruitment examination and also a delay in registration of the FIR, Director-General of the Recruitment Board Renuka Mishra was removed from her position.

<h2>UPPSC sacks exam&nbsp;controller, files an FIR</h2>

The Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC), in the same RO/ARO recruitment examination, also sacked the controller of the examination and filed an FIR. This step was taken after an internal investigation.

More than 48 lakh candidates sat for the examination which was conducted on February 17 and 18 across Uttar Pradesh.&nbsp;

The government further announced that a Special Task Force (STF) will investigate the paper leak allegations.

Last month, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that "there can be no compromise with the sanctity of examinations" and gave assurance of strict action against "unruly elements".

However, later a senior Congress leader clarified that there was no such proposal under consideration. Veerappa Moily, a former chief minister of Karnataka and a member of parliament, clarified that banning an outfit was not possible for a state government.&nbsp;

He said, “We have mentioned both the PFI and the Bajrang Dal in our manifesto. This includes all (radical) outfits. Banning an outfit is not possible by a state government. The Bajrang Dal cannot be banned by the Karnataka government.”

Bajrang Dal ban row: BJP’s Yogi Adityanath enters the fray as Congress issues clarification

The ruling BJP came out with a convincing win as it retained six of the seven seats in bypolls on Tuesday. CM Yogi Adityanath said the exceptional performance of the BJP in the bypolls give a "clear indication" of the party's chances in the upcoming 2022 state Assembly elections.

Speaking to reporters, the Chief Minister said, "The BJP has repeated its poll performance of the 2017 Assembly polls and 2019 Lok Sabha elections. These are clear indications that the party will perform well again in the upcoming 2022 Assembly elections. I thank the people for coming forward to vote."

BJP candidate Sangeeta Chauhan won in Naugawan Sadat, Usha Sirohi in Bulandshahr, Prem Pal Dhangar in Tundla, Shrikant Katiyar in Bangarmau, Satya Prakash Mani Tripathi in Deoria and Upendra Nath Paswan in Ghatampur, according to the Election Commission. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

Samajwadi Party's Lucky Yadav won Malhani, the seat which was represented by his father Parasnath Yadav, whose death necessitated the by-election.

He defeated independent candidate Dhananjay Singh by 4,632 votes. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

A tough see-saw battle was fought for the Naugawan Sadat seat held earlier by Chetan Chauhan, the former cricketer who was a minister in Yogi Adityanath's BJP government. &nbsp;&nbsp;

SP's Javed Abbas, who was trailing in the morning pushed his BJP rival, Chetan Chauhan's wife Sangeeta Chauhan, to the second spot by 3,314 votes for a while.

The BJP candidate at one point had a slim 175-vote lead, but later cruised ahead to win by 15,077 votes.

BJP candidate Satyaprakash Mani Tripathi won Deoria, defeating SP's Brahma Shankar Tripathi by 20,089 votes.

Unnao's Bangermau seat also went to the ruling party with Shrikant Katiyar defeating Congress candidate Arti Bajpai by 31,398 votes.

In Bulandshahr, BJP's Usha Sirohi defeated Bahujan Samaj Party's Mohammad Yunus by 21,702 votes. Her party colleague Upendra Nath Paswan won against Congress candidate Kripa Shankar by 23,820 votes in Ghatampur.

BJP's Prempal Singh Dhangar defeated SP's Mahraj Singh Dhangar by 17,683 votes in Tundla. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

The bypolls for the seven UP seats recorded a voter turnout of 53 per cent on November 3, with 88 candidates in the fray. &nbsp; &nbsp;

The Naugawan Sadat seat fell vacant after the death of Minister Chetan Chauhan, who succumbed to COVID-19.

The Ghatampur constituency in Kanpur Nagar district was held by another minister, Kamal Rani Varun, who too died of the same cause. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The Tundla seat fell vacant after its MLA S P Singh Baghel was elected to the Lok Sabha.

The Bangarmau seat in Unnao was vacated by BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar after his conviction in a rape case. &nbsp; &nbsp;

"The decision to slash corporate tax rates will pave the way for India to become a $5 trillion economy and Uttar Pradesh to be a $1 trillion economy by 2024," Adityanath told media persons.

"The relief that has been given to the corporate sector in terms of tax rebates by the Union Government is a historic decision. Earlier the companies had to pay 30 per cent corporate tax. It has now been reduced to 22 per cent. This means that companies will have more money and greater investment opportunities, leading to employment creation and higher growth," he said.

Adityanath further pointed out that the trade sanctions imposed by the US have led to higher custom tariffs on Chinese goods, which have increased their prices.

"Around 80 per cent American supply chain companies and 67 per cent European companies have been displaced from China," he said.

He said that because of the high labour cost in China, many companies are moving into different countries. Thus, the investment that used to go majorly into China is now going to be directed towards India.

The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister also lauded the Union Government's move to merge public sector banks (PSBs). He said the Central government has taken important decisions on the merger of banks.

The number of banks in the country was 27 in 2017, which is going to be 12 after the merger decision.

Adityanath said that the cuts announced on tax rates will not have an impact on revenue collection but will give a boost to the gross domestic product (GDP), thus giving greater stimulus to the economy.

"The financial sector in Uttar Pradesh will get a major boost because of this decision of the Central government. There will be no negative impact on the revenue collection in the state," he said.

He also pointed out that Uttar Pradesh will have the opportunity to leverage growth because of tax rate cuts and the prevailing business environment.

"We have made 21 sectoral policies in Uttar Pradesh to boost the economy and make the state a preferred investment destination," said Chief Minister Yogi.

"Uttar Pradesh can reap major benefits from the tax rate cuts and the trade war between the USA and China. We have a good land bank and connectivity. Hence, Uttar Pradesh can make the most of opportunities for growth," he said.
