Somewhere in the middle, it goes off track, only to give out its biggest twist during the interval. The second half feels like an afterthought, as if the writers had a one-page idea note which they now had to expand into a full-length film.”</p>

<p>One X user criticised the film, saying it's promising in the first half, but the horror-comedy falls short due to weak humour and scares. The user also felt that Yami Gautam’s performance could not make up for the film’s screenplay issues. It read, “A little comedy for the audience but a lot of horror for the makers! Nayyi Navelli has an interesting premise and the perfect setup for a horror-comedy. Unfortunately, the screenplay offers very little comedy and very little horror. And whatever horror it does offer seems to be reserved for the makers, not the audience!

The first half is passable, with a few laughs, some intrigue and an interesting interval point. But the second half tests your patience, and by the time the film ends, you’re left wondering if the makers themselves realised what kind of film they were making.

Yami Gautam tries her best to bring life to Balaji Mohan’s film but even her sincere performance can’t save this mess. The music fails to impress, the BGM is ordinary, and the editing is just about okay.

Overall, A horror-comedy that offers neither enough horror nor enough comedy. The real horror story, unfortunately, is what ends up on screen!

#YamiGautam delivers an exhilarating performance. Action, comedy, dance, swag and a touch of emotions... the gifted actor goes through the gamut with effortless eaee.

#AnuragThakur and #AddinathKothare will have more takers for their talent after their delightful performances.

Director #BalajiMohan deserves credit for attempting a fantasy family entertainer that doesn’t feel saddled by stereotypes.

The climax, in particular, leaves you completely spellbound.

<p>Taking a swipe at the weak plot, one user called the film a major misfire. The review read, "#NayyiNavelli is a major misfire. What was supposed to be a quirky horror-comedy about a new bride suspected of being a dayan ends up as a dull, stretched, and confused film. Yami Gautam tries hard, but she looks completely out of place trying to balance the horror and comedy tones. Her performance feels forced, and the character never becomes interesting enough to hold the film. Supporting cast mostly overacts, and the comedy track falls flat almost throughout.

The second half dumps heavy Ramayana and mythology elements that feel preachy rather than entertaining. At 2 hours 18 minutes, the runtime becomes a real problem. Direction is flat, VFX are average, and the film never finds a consistent tone.

Overall, Nayyi Navelli is a tedious watch that wastes a decent concept and a capable lead actress. Weak opening and poor word-of-mouth look inevitable.</p>&mdash; Vishwajit Patil (@_PatilVishwajit) <a href="https://x.com/_PatilVishwajit/status/2110995044870082747?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">October 16, 2026</a></blockquote>

Nayyi Naveli X reviews: Yami Gautam’s horror-comedy receives mixed reactions

<p>The flight of fancy scales unimaginable heights with this one. In director Balaji Mohan’s supernatural-meets-mythology comedy caper Nayyi Navelli, Yami Gautam plays a mysterious woman with special powers. On the onset, the film appears to mix comedy and horror- a template well established by the Stree franchise. But the film’s punchlines and wit soon segue into mythology. <p>Yami said, "It feels so overwhelming to see <em>Lost</em> having done huge numbers in views already because that for me is the real response of the audience which truly matters. Even with <em>A Thursday</em>, it was declared the second most watched film of the year and that was so validating as an actor and a person because I believe in choosing scripts that appeal to me personally so when the audience also loves that content, it's really motivating. It pushes me to do better each time and I hope people keep enjoying<em> Lost.</em>"</p>

Yami Gautam celebrates the success of Lost: Audience's love is validating for an actor

<p>The social comedy-drama,'Dasvi', premiered last week on OTT platform Netflix and opened to ample praise from viewers and critics alike apart from the flurry of enthusiastic feedback on the film's performances. The film features Abhishek Bachchan, Nimrat Kaur and Yami Gautam Dhar.<br />
<br />
A certain section of media, though, dissed, Yami Gautam's performance which the actress called out on social media terming it as biased.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
A few months back Yami had earned rave reviews for 'A Thursday'. In 'Dasvi' she essayed the role of a police officer and walked away yet again with praise for her nuanced performance. In fact director, Tushar Jalota even went on record to state how Yami Gautam was his first and only choice for this role.</p>

<p>Says director Tushar Jalota, “Jyoti is a headstrong, brave, no-nonsense and a fearless woman. She is razor-focused and is cuttingly sharp. She has steely authority, is fierce and is simply savage!! And Yami played it to the T. When we were casting for this role in Dasvi, I couldn’t imagine anyone else other than Yami Gautam playing Jyoti Deswal. She is someone who completely gets absorbed by her character and thoroughly prepares for it; whether it’s looking the part or mentally getting into the headspace of the character. Apart from all the prep work, she also worked hard on her Haryanvi dialect and accent and for a moment you forget it’s Yami on screen because all you can see is Jyoti Deswal, a strong, confident, no-nonsense female inspector. There is a practised hardness in Jyoti, that is her stated intent, but she has softer virtues (humility, gentleness, sympathy). Yami has done all of this with so much dignity and nobility. She was definitely a great team player, a supporter for me and I believe that is the mark of a terrific actor and Yami deserves all the accolades coming her way for her performance in the film.”</p>

<p>After impressing us with her performance in Dasvi, the actress has an exciting slate ahead with Anirudhh Roy Choudhary’s 'Lost', 'OMG2' with Akshay Kumar &amp; Pankaj Tripathy, 'Dhoom Dham' and Maddock Films’ 'Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga'.<br />

Yami Gautam deserves all the accolades for her performance in 'Dasvi', says director Tushar Jalota

<p>It is a battle between illiteracy and literacy in Tushar Jalota's new satire 'Dasvi'. Featuring Abhishek Bachchan as a corrupt illiterate, pompous CM of an imaginary state called Harit Pradesh, 'Dasvi' explores the lawlessness and corruption that exists in an Indian state where several ministers win electoral seats on the basis of influence, intimidation and muscle power but are seldom aware of the basics, and many times not even qualified to run a state.<br />
<br />
It is a premise that we have known all too well, but Jalota along with writers Suresh Nair and Ritesh Shah infuse humour into a partly inspired and part fictionalised story making 'Dasvi' quite heartwarming and entertaining.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Bachchan plays the brash Ganga Ram Chaudhary, CM of Harit Pradesh who is put behind bars for one of the numerous scams he and his men are embroiled in. He knows he will be out in a matter of days and places his wife Bimla Devi (Nimrat Kaur) in his place as the acting CM. The initial few days inside the jail are mostly enjoyable for Chaudhary is given the usual VIP treatment that is meted out to most political leaders in Indian jails. Things go awry for him when a new superintendent Jyoti Desval (Yami Gautam Dhar) takes charge of the jail. A stickler&nbsp;for rules, Jyoti cuts Ganga to size and makes him do odd jobs inside the jail just like inmates. To escape the ordeal initially and then later after facing humiliation, Ganga Ram decides to take his 10th board exams which seems a herculean task for someone who has not studied beyond class VII. He declares that he would not take up the CM's post until he clears his 10th or dasvi.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, his wife, a coy housewife who has served her husband all her life, suddenly realises the importance of power and respect as she becomes the CM and isn't quite willing to leave it up once her husband is back. How Ganga ram overcomes his fear of subjects like Maths, Science and Hindi and attempts his exams forms the rest of the story.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
With punchlines galore,- “<em>Mall banega toh maal aayega. School banenge toh berozgari badhegi,</em>" (Contructing a mall will get you moolah, constructing a school will lead to unemployment) and quirky references to films like Taare Zameen Par, 'Dasvi' manages to keep the viewers smiling throughout.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
It helps that the casting is pitch-perfect. Despite several of his films not doing well at the box office, Bachchan has time and again proved his versatility. He is particularly good at comedy and 'Dasvi' seems like a perfect choice. His accent does slip a bit in some scenes, but as the gregarious, Ganga Ram Chaudhary, Bachchan is a delight to watch. He isn't hamming, the humour is sly and that's why more enjoyable.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
While Bachchan is the central character, the women are equally good sometimes even overpowering the lead actor with sheer screen presence and convincing performance. It was so refreshing to watch Nimrat Kaur play a role that is diametrically different from her real-life character. Initially submissive and meek, Bimla Devi comes into her own eventually and the transformation is a delight to watch. Gautam's role is of a no-nonsense cop who knows how to run a jail but also is a reformist and the actress truly delivers her part.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
'Dasvi' writing though only scratches the surface at times and doesn't delve deeper perhaps to keep the comedic mood alive. It does address a lot of issues- corruption, red-tapism, honour killing, middle school education and even dyslexia- a disorder that Bachchan himself had in his childhood, but it never goes too deep into any of these issues. The second half picks up pace but towards the climax, it seems slightly stretched.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Despite the flaws, I would recommend 'Dasvi'. It is well-intended, has its funny moments and is entertaining.&nbsp;<br />
'Dasvi' is streaming on Netflix.&nbsp;</p>

Featuring Abhishek Bachchan as a corrupt illiterate, pompous CM of an imaginary state called Harit Pradesh, 'Dasvi' explores the lawlessness and corruption that exists in an Indian state where several ministers win electoral seats on the basis of influence, intimidation and muscle power but are seldom aware of the basics, and many times not even qualified to run a state.

It is a battle between illiteracy and literacy in Tushar Jalota's new satire 'Dasvi'. It is a premise that we have known all too well, but Jalota along with writers Suresh Nair and Ritesh Shah infuse humour into a partly inspired and part fictionalised story making 'Dasvi' quite heartwarming and entertaining. A stickler for rules, Jyoti cuts Ganga to size and makes him do odd jobs inside the jail just like inmates. To escape the ordeal initially and then later after facing humiliation, Ganga Ram decides to take his 10th board exams which seems a herculean task for someone who has not studied beyond class VII. He declares that he would not take up the CM's post until he clears his 10th or dasvi. Meanwhile, his wife, a coy housewife who has served her husband all her life, suddenly realises the importance of power and respect as she becomes the CM and isn't quite willing to leave it up once her husband is back. How Ganga ram overcomes his fear of subjects like Maths, Science and Hindi and attempts his exams forms the rest of the story. With punchlines galore,- “Mall banega toh maal aayega. School banenge toh berozgari badhegi," (Contructing a mall will get you moolah, constructing a school will lead to unemployment) and quirky references to films like Taare Zameen Par, 'Dasvi' manages to keep the viewers smiling throughout. He isn't hamming, the humour is sly and that's why more enjoyable. Gautam's role is of a no-nonsense cop who knows how to run a jail but also is a reformist and the actress truly delivers her part. The second half picks up pace but towards the climax, it seems slightly stretched. Despite the flaws, I would recommend 'Dasvi'. It is well-intended, has its funny moments and is entertaining. 'Dasvi' review: Abhishek Bachchan, Nimrat Kaur and Yami Gautam Dhar pass the test with flying colours

<p>A sign of a good thriller is how unpredictable it is and how well and long it keeps its audience engaged with it through its run time. Filmmaker Behzad Khambata's film 'A Thursday' headlined by Yami Gautam Dhar ticks most of the boxes of what makes a good thriller.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Gautam plays Naina, a pre-primary school teacher, who one Thursday decides to take her 16 students hostage. She calls up the local police station to announce that if her demands are not met, she would kill her hostages- which includes a driver of a student and the school's helper- on an hourly basis.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
The Police, led by a visibly pregnant Catherine Alvarez (Neha Dhupia) arrive at the scene soon enough but Naina demands to first speak to Javed Khan (Atul Kulkarni) who is Catherin's subordinate. She then demands a lump sum money to be transferred to her account in exchange for a student. Things go awry soon enough when she shoots at one of her hostages live on social media, much to the horror of the cops, the frightened parents who have gathered outside and the nation at large who are watching the drama unfold live on new channels. Naina eventually wants to speak to the PM of the country (Dimple Kapadia) who takes time to understand the seriousness of the situation.<br />
<br />
Set in a time when 24/7 News Channels and social media make the world accessible to one all, the film is a sequel of sorts to Neeraj Pandey's brilliant 'A Wednesday' where a common man-made the Mumbai Police run amok to find bombs in the city in order to send across a powerful message. Thematically, 'A Thursday' is also a vigilante drama, and adapts to the current pace of live TV and social media well as Naina unfolds her demands one by one on social media.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
To its credit, 'A Thursday' keeps you mostly gripped throughout its 2 hours run time. Why has she held the innocent children hostage, why does she only want to speak to Javed Khan, why does she want an audience with PM- are questions that plague your mind while watching thereby keeping you hooked to the film.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
It wastes almost no time in deep diving into the plot with Naina, as the popular teacher of the playschool, turning deeply disturbing in a matter of hours.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Gautam is the uncanny hero of the film. A story like this has to be well written and well enacted. Writers Ashley Lobo and Khambata deliver a taut screenplay and Gautam plays the mysterious Naina with absolute ease. One doesn't associate such characters to Gautam usually and that's where she triumphs. As Naina, a warm person suddenly turns eerily vengeful, Gautam goes all out but never overdoing her part. She is able to strike a balance. &nbsp;</p>

<br />
Atul Kulkarni, who plays cop Javed Khan is good too although his character lacks the depth. He character is a mansplainer of sorts, telling his superior- a woman- how to do her job well. Dhupia, with limited time on screen also delivers a credible performance even though her screen time is limited.<br />
<br />
Performances of Dimple Kapadia as the PM of the country and Kalyanee Mulay as the help who is held hostage are also worthy of praise.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
The film though takes copious liberty in terms of how the drama unfolds and how Naina's demands are met by the police. It also delivers a message which is deeply polarizing and has been a topic of debate for years now. Of course, in cinema judgements and laws are delivered quicker than in real life. Nevertheless, 'A Thursday' by the end may not leave you very convinced (or deeply convinced) but credit should be given for once again starting to conversation.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
'A Thursday' is steaming on Disney+Hotstar.</p>
