Farrow,” an HBO documentary series that reexamines Dylan Farrow’s decades-old sexual abuse allegations against filmmaker Woody Allen, her adoptive father, a spokesperson for Allen released a statement Sunday night slamming the series, calling it a “shoddy hit piece.”

Letty Aronson, Allen’s sister, sent the statement — attributed to a spokesperson — shortly after the first episode aired, on behalf of Allen and Soon-Yi Previn, the filmmaker’s wife and the adopted daughter of Mia Farrow. In 1992, Farrow, Allen’s longtime girlfriend, learned of the relationship between Allen and Previn when Previn was a first-year college student. That relationship is also the subject of scrutiny in the four-part docuseries.

Neither Allen nor Previn participated in the series, but it does include audio excerpts from Allen’s recent memoir, “Apropos of Nothing.”

“These documentarians had no interest in the truth,” the statement said. “Instead, they spent years surreptitiously collaborating with the Farrows and their enablers to put together a hatchet job riddled with falsehoods.”

On Monday, the publisher of Allen’s memoir, Skyhorse, raised another objection to the series: that the filmmakers had used snippets from the audiobook without permission. In a statement, the president and publisher of Skyhorse, Tony Lyons, said that the “unauthorized” use of the audio in the first episode was “clear, willful infringement under existing legal precedent.”

Lyons said in the statement that the filmmakers did not request permission to use the excerpts and that the publisher learned late last week that the episodes make “extensive” use of the audiobook. The publisher’s lawyer notified HBO on Friday that “if the use of the audiobook were anywhere near what we were hearing, it would constitute copyright infringement,” he said.

The memoir was originally set to be published last year by Grand Central Publishing, an imprint of Hachette Book Group until dozens of Hachette employees staged a walkout in protest and the publisher reneged. About two weeks later, his book was published by Arcade Publishing, an imprint of the independent publisher Skyhorse.

In response to the publisher’s objections, an HBO spokesperson provided a statement from the filmmakers, saying, “The creators of ‘Allen v. Farrow’ legally used limited audio excerpts from Woody Allen’s memoir in the series under the Fair Use doctrine.” The doctrine has been invoked to allow artists and journalists — including documentary filmmakers — to use limited amounts of copyrighted works for certain purposes, including using the material to illustrate an argument or to serve as the subject of a critique.

“As has been known for decades, these allegations are categorically false,” the statement said. “Multiple agencies investigated them at the time and found that, whatever Dylan Farrow may have been led to believe, absolutely no abuse had ever taken place.”

In later episodes, the series raises questions about one of those investigations, in particular: a report issued by the Yale Child Sexual Abuse Clinic, at the Yale-New Haven Hospital, which found Dylan uncredible after interviewing the child nine times during a seven-month period. HBO has announced a documentary on filmmaker Woody Allen that will look into the story behind the sexual abuse allegations against him involving his daughter Dylan Farrow. 
 
Titled 'Allen v Farrow', the four-part documentary hails from investigative filmmakers Kirby Dick, Amy Ziering and Amy Herdy, HBO said in a statement. It will premiere on HBO on February 21. 
 
The documentary has been meticulously pieced together through intimate home movie footage, court documents, police evidence, revelatory videotape and never-before-heard audiotapes.

Handler’s primary awkwardness came from an exchange with Allen and Previn, who famously began their relationship while Previn was in the care of adoptive mother (and Allen’s ex) Mia Farrow.

“Woody has told his story comprehensively in his book; we highly recommend that anyone with questions reads it," a spokesperson for Allen said in a statement on Monday. 
 
Jeanette Seaver, the co-founder of Arcade Publishing, said in a statement that the decision to release the book was a matter of freedom of speech. 
 
"We find it critical to hear more than one side of a story and more importantly, not to squelch a writer`s right to be heard," Seaver said in a statement.

The publisher of filmmaker Woody Allen's forthcoming memoir said on Friday it had scrapped plans to release the book following criticism and a walkout by staff over a longstanding allegation he molested his daughter.

Hachette Book Group had previously announced it would debut Allen's book, 'A Propos of Nothing', in April. Allen has repeatedly denied the accusation that he molested his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow, in 1992.

On Thursday, dozens of Hachette employees in New York staged a midday walkout to protest the company's decision to publish Allen's book.

In a statement on Friday, Hachette said it had 'extensive' conversations with staff and others and concluded that publishing the book 'would not be feasible'.

"The decision to cancel Mr. Allen’s book was a difficult one," the statement said. "At HBG we take our relationships with authors very seriously, and do not cancel books lightly. We have published and will continue to publish many challenging books."

Representatives for Allen did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Dylan Farrow and her brother, journalist Ronan Farrow, had both criticized Hachette's plan to release their father's book. The decision was "deeply upsetting to me," Dylan Farrow wrote on Twitter earlier this month.

Allen has denied the allegation by Dylan Farrow, which was also made by her mother, Mia Farrow, who appeared in Allen films and was his longtime partner.

Allen has not been charged. He is the winner of four Oscars, including best director for 1977’s "Annie Hall," which also won best picture.

Dylan Farrow, who levelled allegations of sexual assault against her stepfather filmmaker Woody Allen over two decades ago, says it is difficult for her to understand why people are slamming her for speaking out. Dylan, who was adopted by actor Mia Farrow and Allen, opened up for the first time in TV interview with Gayle King on CBS This Morning. In a clip released by the network, Gayle can be seen asking Dylan, "Someone said this to me, 'She wants to bring Woody Allen down. She's caught up in the Me Too, Time's Up movement and this is really what she's trying to do, is bring him down'." To this Dylan responded, "Why shouldn't I want to bring him down? Why shouldn't I be angry? Why shouldn't I be hurt? Why shouldn't I feel some sort of outrage that after all these years being ignored and disbelieved and tossed aside?" Dylan had accused Allen of sexual abuse in the early 1990s while she was a minor, which he has always denied. She even went on to put the claims in various articles, including a New York Times op-ed in 2014. She has often criticised Hollywood for not taking her claims seriously. When Gayle asked Dylan why she should be believed, she replied, "I suppose that's on them, but all I can do is speak my truth and hope... Hope that somebody will believe me instead of just hearing." The #MeToo movement is now spreading like a wildfire, with Dylan's claims being the latest to add fuel to it, following her brother Ronan Farrow's expose of Harvey Weinstein. Ronan is Allen and Farrow's biological child.
