The overall global Covid-19 caseload has topped 173.5 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 3.73 million, according to Johns Hopkins University.

In its latest update on Tuesday morning, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed that the current global caseload and death toll stood at 173,538,801 and 3,734,654, respectively.

The US continues to be the worst-hit country with the world`s highest number of cases and deaths at 33,377,632 and 597,946, respectively, according to the CSSE.

In terms of infections, India follows in second place with 28,909,975 cases.

Talking about the governments' handling the pandemic he said: "The safety of the Earth’s people cannot rely solely on the goodwill of governments. Every government is responsible for, &amp; accountable to, its people. But the member States can only truly keep their people safe if they are accountable to each other at the global level".

Emphasising a Pandemic treaty and joint action he said that: "A Pandemic Treaty would foster improved sharing, trust and accountability, and provide the solid foundation on which to build other mechanisms for global health security". 
 
In closing comments to the WHO’s annual week-long high-level assembly, Tedros said that a potential international treaty will be discussed in a special session of WHO members in November.

Consignments of coronavirus vaccine doses were supplied as gifts to Bangladesh (20 lakh), Myanmar (17 lakh), Nepal (10 lakh), Bhutan (1.5 lakh), the Maldives (1 lakh), Mauritius (1 lakh), Seychelles (50,000), Sri Lanka (5 lakh), Bahrain (1 lakh), Oman (1 lakh), Afghanistan (5 Lakhs), Barbados (1 Lakh) and Dominica (70,000), he said.

Srivastava said countries which received vaccines on commercial basis are Brazil (20 lakh), Morocco (60 lakh), Bangladesh (50 lakh), Myanmar (20 lakh), Egypt (50,000), Algeria (50,000), South Africa (10 lakh), Kuwait (2 lakh) and UAE (2 lakh).

The vaccines are even being sent to Latin American countries.

India, the largest drug producer in the world, is currently manufacturing two COVID-19 vaccines- Covishield and Covaxin.

While Oxford-AstraZeneca's Covishield is being manufactured by the Serum Institute of India in Pune, Covaxin is being produced by Bharat Biotech.

"Since then I have spoken with several authorities in Tanzania but WHO is yet to receive any information regarding what measures Tanzania is taking to respond to the pandemic.

On Wednesday, the vice president of semi-autonomous Zanzibar, Seif Sharif Hamad, died after his opposition party admitted he had contracted coronavirus.

The head of the civil service, John Kijazi, also died Wednesday.&nbsp;

The cause of death has not been revealed. But Magufuli brought up Covid-19 at his funeral.

"When this respiratory disease erupted last year, we won because we put God first and took other measures. I'm sure we will win again if we do so this time around," he said.&nbsp;

"With Covid-19 having now killed more than 1.7 million people, devastated economies, upended societies and exposed the world`s vulnerabilities in the starkest ways, the value of health emergency preparedness has hit home like never before," said UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

"As we strive to control and recover from the current pandemic, we must think about the next. Unfortunately, it is easy to imagine a virus just as infectious but even more lethal."

The International Day of Epidemic Preparedness falls on the birthdate of Louis Pasteur, the French biologist responsible for ground-breaking work on vaccinations.

Meanwhile, the head of the WHO's European branch, Hans Kluge told reporters that Europe can combat the new coronavirus without full lockdowns since authorities are now better prepared to handle outbreaks.

"We can manage the virus and keep the economy running and an education system in operation," he said. Europe has witnessed an outbreak of the virus in the past few months after being hit hard from February&nbsp;and April, even though the virus had faded but it has shown signs of coming back with Spain, Italy and Germany.

In the first week of August, 40,000 more cases were reported in Europe.

"But we are not in February, we can manage the virus differently now than we did when COVID-19 first emerged," Kluge said.

No return to 'old normal' in near future, says WHO chief as cases rise by 1 million in 5 days

The World Health Organization director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said today that the coronavirus pandemic has been accelerating and has "clearly not reached the peak".

The UN health body said that WHO experts will be travelling to China shortly to prepare scientific plans with the Chinese counterparts to identify the source of the COVID-19. WHO said the mission would be to advance the understanding of animal hosts for COVID-19 and ascertain how the virus jumped from animals to humans.

During the press conference, the WHO said that there was "emerging evidence" on the airborne transmission of the new coronavirus.

"We acknowledge that there is emerging evidence in this field... therefore we believe that we have to be open to this evidence and understand its implications," WHO's professor Benedetta Allegranzi said.

WHO said so far there have been 11.4 million coronavirus cases and over 535, 000 lives lost.

The German media report had cited the country's intelligence service as its source behind the revelation. However, China's foreign ministry dismissed reports of a phone call between President Xi and Tedros on January 21.

US President Trump has been attacking the WHO for weeks accusing it of a "China bais" even as the UK, Canada, Australia and Germany have asked for an independent probe into the origin of the virus.

The German report had said that China's information policy had led to a loss of four to six weeks to fight the virus worldwide.

WHO has already dismissed the report saying that "January 21 phone call between Dr Tedros and President Xi are unfounded and untrue."
