Hours after his disappointing performance in the United States presidential election debate, President Joe Biden slammed those who criticised his age.

In his fiery speech, he vowed to his supporters that he would win re-election in November amid rising concerns over his candidature among the Democrats.

"I know I'm not a young man, to state the obvious," Biden, said during a rally in North Carolina on Friday (June 28), a day after he struggled to debate with his Republican rival Donald Trump.

"I don’t walk as easy as I used to... I don’t debate as well as I used to," he conceded. "But I know what I do know, I know how to tell the truth [and] I know how to do this job," he said.

“I know how to do this job. I know how to get things done. I know what millions of Americans know: When you get knocked down, you get back up,” Biden said.

Biden, repeating a line from the presidential debate, said, “I spent 90 minutes on a stage debating a guy who has the morals of an alley cat. I think he [Trump] set a new record for the number of lies told at a single debate.”

Former US president Donald Trump has promised to defund schools teaching things like gender ideology and critical race theory if he is reelected this coming November.

Speaking at Turning Point Action's "The People's Convention" in Michigan on Saturday (June 15), Trump said he would further cut funding to federal schools that require vaccines and masks.

Education, a top priority

"On day one, I will sign a new executive order to cut federal funding for any school pushing critical race theory, transgender insanity, and other inappropriate racial, sexual, or political content onto the lives of our children," said the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

"And I will not give one penny to any school that has a vaccine mandate or a mask mandate," he stated, adding that he will also "keep men out of women’s sports".

Trump underscored that education is a top priority in his campaign. He had previously revealed plans to "break up" the Department of Education, alter schools' curriculums, and allow school principals to be elected.

He promised support for the Second Amendment, which upholds an individual's right to own a gun.

To address these concerns and prove his might on an issue he's perceived to be badly performing on, Biden recently issued an executive order restricting asylum claims when illegal border crossings exceed 2,500 per day. It also facilitates deportations to Mexico.

The order, intended to be temporary until crossings fall below 1,500 per day, has faced criticism from both sides of the political spectrum. Republicans view the measure as insufficient, while others criticise it as too harsh.

Trump, seizing on this discontent, promised to rescind the order immediately if elected. "On Day One of my administration, I will be rescinding Crooked Joe's outrageous executive order," he declared, labelling it as "pro-invasion, pro-child trafficking… pro-drug dealers" without providing evidence.

Addressing a cheering crowd, he also vowed, "I will terminate every single open borders policy of the Biden administration."

The Republican leader's previous term was marked by strict immigration measures, including a controversial travel ban on several Muslim-majority countries.

Wall Street's rich bet on Trump

The news of Trump considering an advisory role for Musk came after the two patched up in recent months.

According to a report published in the The Wall Street Journal, Trump has not finalised the details, however, the two have been discussing how Musk can provide “formal input” on issues like the economy, border, and preventing voter fraud.

Musk pushes business leaders to not support Biden

The world’s third-richest man, along with billionaire investor Nelson Peltz, spoke to Trump regarding an effort made by Musk to convince business leaders not to support President Joe Biden in November elections.

“President Trump will be the only voice of what role an individual plays in his presidency,” said senior Trump adviser Brian Hughes, while speaking to The New York Post.

“But it has been widely reported and is demonstrated in a number of ways, that many of the nation’s most important leaders in technology and innovation are concerned with the damage done to their industry by Biden’s failures to handle our economy and his moves to overburden innovators with government bureaucracy and unrelenting regulation," he added.

Social media platform X owner and founder of Tesla and Space X Musk had earlier said that he would not give money to either candidate and has always taken an anti-Biden stance.

However, the South African-born billionaire has always portrayed himself as an independent. In 2002, Musk became a US citizen.

After clinching victory on Super Tuesday and becoming a presumptive Republican nominee, Trump met Musk at Mar-a-Lago, reported the Wall Street Journal.

Former United States president Donald Trump, while speaking to a group of wealthy campaign donors, said that the pro-Palestinian protests which have marred the universities will be crushed by him after he comes back to power. Trump said that if he is re-elected, he will deport all pro-Palestinian student protesters to ensure that they “behave”. He further said that there will be a crackdown on campus protests which have swept the country in the past few months. Trump reportedly said that the group of donors encompassed “98 per cent of my Jewish friends". You know, there are a lot of foreign students. As soon as they hear that, they’re going to behave,” said Trump, as reported by The Washington Post. Will push back movement by 25 or 30 years: Trump The presumptive Republican nominee said that protests against the Gaza war were part of a “radical revolution” and said to the predominantly Jewish donors that he would push the movement back 25 or 30 years if he defeats Joe Biden in November’s presidential election. “If you get me re-elected, we’re going to set that movement back 25 or 30 years,” said Trump. He added that any foreign students, if found participating in the protests, will be expelled by his administration. He also appreciated the efforts made by the New York police in clearing the encampments at Columbia University and added that a similar approach should be adopted by other cities. “It has to be stopped now," Trump said. Relations between Saudi Arabia and the US are expected to improve as the latter is mulling lifting the ban on selling offensive weapons to the kingdom state in coming weeks, Financial Times has reported citing US officials. US President Joe Biden had introduced these restrictions three years ago shortly after entering the White House, in line with his long-held vow to make Saudi Arabia a 'pariah' state. Biden had promised to punish Saudi Arabia and its de-facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for the alleged use of US-made weapons in attacks against Yemen civilians.

Saudi Arabia had entered the Yemen conflict nine years ago in a bid to oust the Iran-backed Houthi group but largely remained unsuccessful. In 2022, the UN brokered a peace deal there and Riyadh has largely refrained from involving itself in the conflict since then.

US says Ebrahim Raisi had 'lot of blood on his hands', denies role in crash that killed Iran president

The White House on Thursday (May 16) prevented the release of audio of President Joe Biden’s interview to a special counsel regarding his handling of classified documents. They argued that Congressional Republicans sought the recordings primarily to manipulate and exploit them for political gain.

The House Judiciary Committee voted to continue to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress for not turning over the records.

“The department has a legal responsibility to turn over the requested materials pursuant to the subpoena,” Rep. Jim Jordan, the GOP chairman of the Judiciary Committee, said during the hearing.

“Attorney General Garland’s willful refusal to comply with our subpoena constitutes contempt of Congress,” he added.

The series of events on Thursday escalated tensions between House Republicans and the Justice Department, making the way for another round of intense conflict between the two branches of government that is likely to end up in court.

If House Republicans’ efforts against Garland are successful, he will become the third attorney general to be held in contempt of Congress.

The White House condemned Republicans in a letter, dismissing their efforts to obtain the audio as purely political.

White House counsel Ed Siskel wrote a letter to House Republicans saying, “The absence of a lawful need for the audio recordings lays bare your likely goal — to chop them up, distort them, and use them for partisan political purposes."

“Demanding such sensitive and constitutionally-protected law enforcement materials from the Executive Branch because you want to manipulate them for potential political gain is inappropriate,” Siskel added.

In a letter made public on Thursday, Garland informed Biden that the audio is covered by executive privilege. It safeguards a president’s ability to receive candid advice from advisers without the risk of immediate public disclosure and protects confidential communications related to official duties.

The attorney general told reporters that the Justice Department has gone to extraordinary lengths to provide information to the committees about special counsel Robert Hur's investigation, including a transcript of Biden's interview with Hur.

But, Garland said, releasing the audio could risk future sensitive and high-profile investigations. Officials have suggested handing over the tape could make future witnesses concerned about cooperating with investigators.

Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson criticised the White House’s move, accusing Biden of suppressing the tape because he's afraid to have voters hear it during an election year.

Hur’s report said many of the documents recovered at the Penn Biden Center in Washington, in parts of Biden’s Delaware home, and in his Senate papers at the University of Delaware were retained by mistake.

A day after US President Joe Biden granted clemency to 16 people who were convicted of non-violent drug crimes, Kim Kardashian reached the White House to meet Vice President Kamala Harris and discuss criminal justice reform. The forum was attended by several people who were pardoned on Wednesday, including Jason Hernandez, Bobby Darrell Lowery, Jesse Mosley and Beverly Holcy.

"I’m a big believer in the power of redemption," Harris said at the event. "Is it not the sign of a civil society that we allow people a way to earn their way back and give them the support and the resources they need to do that?"

Harris also thanked Kardashian for visiting the White House multiple times and using her platform in a way that has "really lifted up the importance of talking about and being dedicated to second chances".

"I’m just here to help and to spread the word," Kardashian said, before telling the pardon recipients that she was "excited to be here to hear your stories". Kardashian also said that sharing personal stories helps people understand the challenges of re-entering society after incarceration.

"Every time I’ve gone and visited a prison, I’ve met some of the smartest individuals with the brightest ideas and to see the changes that are happening to make their re-entry easier, I think, is going to be life-changing and give so many people hope," Kardashian added.

At the roundtable, Harris also announced the finalisation of a Small Business Administration rule that will remove most restrictions on loan eligibility based on a person's criminal record.

Since taking office, Biden has commuted the sentences of 122 individuals and granted pardons to 20 individuals who committed non-violent drug offences, the White House said. In December, Biden granted categorical pardons to thousands convicted of use and simple possession of marijuana in Washington and on federal lands.

US: Pro-Palestine protests turning antisemitic?

United States President Joe Biden on Sunday (April 21) warned of an “alarming surge of antisemitism” in a statement which was released over the approaching Jewish holiday of Passover while referring to the student protests at Columbia University.

“Silence is complicity. Even in recent days, we’ve seen harassment and calls for violence against Jews. This blatant Antisemitism is reprehensible and dangerous — and it has absolutely no place on college campuses, or anywhere in our country," read Biden’s statement.

The statement was released by the president to formally mark the religious holiday which starts on Monday (April 22).

“My commitment to the safety of the Jewish people, the security of Israel, and its right to exist as an independent Jewish state is ironclad,” Biden said.

Biden's statement came hours after the White House issued another statement in which it criticised appeals for violence and “physical intimidation targeting Jewish students and the Jewish community” on Columbia’s campus.

Rabbi asks Jewish students to vacate campus

Earlier, Rabbi Elie Buechler appealed to all 300 Jewish students to exit the campus for their own safety as protests continued.

“What we are witnessing in and around campus is terrible and tragic. The events of the last few days, especially last night, have made it clear that Columbia University’s Public Safety and the (New York Police Department) cannot guarantee Jewish students’ safety in the face of extreme antisemitism and anarchy," Buechler wrote in an online post.

“While every American has the right to peaceful protest, calls for violence and physical intimidation targeting Jewish students and the Jewish community are blatantly Antisemitic, unconscionable, and dangerous — they have absolutely no place on any college campus, or anywhere in the United States of America,” said White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates, in a statement.

The statement was released after a video appeared on social media over the weekend in which pro-Palestinian activists were seen telling Jewish students, “The 7th of October is going to be every day for you,” while referring to the Hamas-led attack on Israel.

“Echoing the rhetoric of terrorist organisations, especially in the wake of the worst massacre committed against the Jewish people since the Holocaust, is despicable. We condemn these statements in the strongest terms,” said Bates.
