United States President Joe Biden took the world by surprise and left the White House in the lurch after claiming that his uncle was most likely eaten by cannibals in Papua New Guinea during World War II.

United States President Joe Biden took the world by surprise and left the White House in the lurch after claiming that his uncle was most likely eaten by cannibals in Papua New Guinea during World War II. As reported by Western media outlets, 81-year-old Biden said that his uncle's plane was shot down over Papua New Guinea during World War II. He further emphasised how this place is known for cannibals. The statement was made by Biden while he was paying tribute to his uncle Ambrose Finnegan. Biden said his body was never found and suspected that it was eaten by cannibals. And he got shot down in New Guinea, and they never found the body because there used to be a lot of cannibals – for real – in that part of New Guinea,” said the president. White House reacts to President Biden's cannibal remarks Clarifying Biden's statement, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Thursday (April 18) accepted that Finnegan died after his plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean amid World War II, which implied that he was not eaten by cannibals. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Jean-Pierre said, “You saw the president, he was incredibly proud of his uncle’s service in uniform. You saw him at the war memorial. It was incredibly emotional and important to him." “You saw him respond to all of you when asked about the moment yesterday and his uncle, who lost his life when the military aircraft he was on crashed in the Pacific after taking off near New Guinea," the spokesperson added. What did the defence report say about Biden's uncle? The claims made by Biden also fail to match the account published by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency. As per the report, “For unknown reasons, this plane was forced to ditch in the ocean off the north coast of New Guinea. Both engines failed at low altitude, and the aircraft's nose hit the water hard.” Watch: US-China ties: Joe Biden calls China 'xenophobic' while China calls out US' hypocrisy The report stated that no trace of lost crew members and missing aircraft was found by an aerial search party. “Second Lieutenant Ambrose J. Finnegan entered the U.S. Army Air Forces from Pennsylvania and served in Headquarters, Fifth Air Force. He was the passenger on this Havoc when it was lost. He has not been associated with any remains recovered from the area after the war and is still unaccounted-for. Today, Second Lieutenant Finnegan is memorialized on the Walls of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines,” read the report. (With inputs from agencies)

United States President Joe Biden has urged Israel to declare a 'unilateral ceasefire' for at least six to eight weeks and said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's strategy in the war is a mistake.

The statement of Biden appeared to be nullifying the stance of the administration that a truce in Gaza is only possible if Hamas agrees to release some of the hostages, who have still been kept in the Gaza Strip.

“What I’m calling for is for the Israelis to just call for a ceasefire, allow for the next six, eight weeks, total access to all food and medicine going into the country,” said Biden, in an interview with Univision, a US Spanish-language TV network.

“I’ve spoken with everyone from the Saudis to the Jordanians to the Egyptians. They’re prepared to move in. They’re prepared to move this food in. And I think there’s no excuse to not provide for the medical and food needs of those people. It should be done now,” the president added.

White House says no shift in US administration's policy

Reacting to Biden's appeal to call for a unilateral ceasefire, the White House clarified that the president's statements do not hint at any shift in the US administration's policy.

A White House official said that Biden was speaking about the truce which is being currently negotiated by his administration and would see the release of some 40 hostages over a six-to-eight-week period.

“There is no change in our position. The president was reiterating our longstanding position: we are calling for an immediate ceasefire that would last for at least six weeks as part of a hostage deal,” said the official.

“His quote [to Univision] makes that clear. This is in line with what he said at the State of the Union, and that we’ve repeatedly said,” added the senior White House official.

Hours before Biden's interview was aired, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan had blamed Hamas for delaying a deal.

“There could be a ceasefire in place today that would extend for several weeks to be built upon longer if Hamas would be prepared to release some of those people, so let’s train the attention where it belongs… I believe Israel is ready and Hamas should step up to the table and be prepared to do so as well,” said Sullivan.

Hamas “has an opportunity now to agree to the proposal on a ceasefire and hostages. The ball is in Hamas’s court. The world is watching to see what it does,” said US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

The White House has slammed the Republicans for criticising the proclamation issued by United States President Joe Biden in support of transgender people on Easter and called their comments 'misleading' and 'dishonest'.

The president's spokesperson rejected the comments made by former president Donald Trump, the House speaker and others who called Biden's proclamation "blasphemous" and said that the Transgender Day of Visibility message goes against Christianity.

Speaking to ABC News, White House spokesperson Andrew Bates said, "As a Christian who celebrates Easter with family, President Biden stands for bringing people together and upholding the dignity and freedoms of every American."

"Sadly, it's unsurprising politicians are seeking to divide and weaken our country with cruel, hateful, and dishonest rhetoric. President Biden will never abuse his faith for political purposes or for profit," Bates further said.

Republicans react to Biden's proclamation for transgenders

Biden, who is the second Catholic president of the United States, was subjected to a lot of criticism over the weekend after he issued a proclamation on Friday (Mar 29) honouring "the extraordinary courage and contributions of transgender Americans" for the Transgender Day of Visibility, which is marked annually on March 31.

The date of Easter, which keeps changing every year, fell on the Transgender Day of Visibility this year.

A statement was also issued by Biden on Sunday marking Easter which said that it "reminds us of the power of hope and the promise of Christ’s Resurrection. US President Joe Biden warned top congressional leaders Tuesday of the dire cost of failing to give Ukraine military aid as he hosted high-stakes talks at the White House.

The rare Oval Office meeting escalated efforts to unlock billions of dollars of stalled assistance for Ukraine's fight against Russia's invasion -- and to avert a government shutdown at home.
