A massive blast rocked North 24 Parganas district’s Naihati town amidst the detonation of seized firecrackers on Thursday.

Police officials from Barrackpore commissionerate had reached the riverbank of Ganges at Naihati town to detonate the seized firecrackers. But the impact of bomb detonation was so massive that two police vehicles were damaged and houses on the other side of the river – Chuchura in Hooghly district braced massive impact.

Houses situated kilometres away from the blast site saw massive impact with rooftops being damaged and glass window panes were shattered. Infuriated locals gheraoed Chandannagore Police Commissioner Humayun Kabir who reached the spot on either side to assess the situation.

On the other hand, site of the blast which falls under the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate limits left locals wondering what led to the massive blast.

On reaching the spot, Barrackpore Police Commissioner Manoj Verma said, “We are investigating the matter. We have been detonating firecrackers and explosives for the last three days. We did not face any trouble in the last two days. We will investigate what went wrong, it is difficult to comment now.”

On the other hand, BJP leaders including state president Dilip Ghosh demanded NIA enquiry into the incident.

This apart, the West Bengal Governor, Jagdeep Dhankhar took to Twitter and demanded a serious probe.&nbsp;

“The explosion leaves nothing to the imagination. It calls for a thorough probe in view of its seriousness, intensity and damage caused. Only expert investigation can unearth issues involved. This ominous development should be an eye-opener for law enforcing and regulatory regime in State,” he wrote on Twitter.

A man was arrested after police busted an illegal arms manufacturing unit from the Port area of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/students-protest-across-country-after-jnu-attack-272583">Kolkata</a>.

According to the police's statement, the accused identified as Abdul Kayum alias Munna has been arrested for his alleged involvement in the illegal arms manufacturing unit. "He was engaged in making firearms using machines and materials inside a tile shed room situated on the terrace of his rented premises," police said.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team raided a single-storied building at Nadial in the city's Port area and busted the arms manufacturing unit, seized the materials and arrested Munna.

During the raid, one finished 7 mm pistol, one finished magazine, one semi-finished magazine, one barrel, three drill machines, six vise&nbsp;machines, two hand-held visas, steel sheets, iron bars, hammers, hacksaw blades, iron spring coils were also seized, police said.

Apart from Kayum, the landlord of the building Mohammed Kalim, a resident of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/richard-gere-attends-dalai-lamas-session-in-bodh-gaya-bihar-272125">Bihar</a> and others were also engaged in the same job. But they could not be traced, they said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday said that a meeting against National Register of Citizens (NRC) and Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) will be held on December 23 in all the sub-division headquarters of the state.

In an apparent attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar on Wednesday said the Citizenship Amendment Act is the law of the land and those who are on constitutional and government posts are bound by it.

"I don't care about (what) political parties do. They are free to say whatever they want. According to the Constitution, the state government is bound to follow the law. And those who are on government posts are fully bound by the law of the land. The Chief Minister took the oath to act according to the Constitution, and this law is part of the Constitution," Dhankar said at a press conference.

Banerjee, who has been at the loggerheads with Dhankar, is opposed to the Citizenship Amendment Act and has said that she will not allow the legislation to be implemented in West Bengal.

Dhankar said that the amended Citizenship Act is not against any citizen of India.

"The Citizenship Amendment Act is not against any citizen of India and it does not deprive any citizen of this country in any manner whatsoever. If any impression is being given that it affects the citizen of the country, it is erroneous and misinterpretation," he said.

"It is giving a healing touch to those who have no other place to go and India is their natural home. Citizenship Act doesn't affect the interest of any Indian citizen," Dhankar said.

The Governor expressed hope that the Chief Minister will enter into a dialogue with him.

"I have no doubt that the Honourable Chief Minister would also enter into a dialogue with me. That dialogue will be beneficial for both of us and it will be in the interest of West Bengal. And it will serve a large constitutional purpose," he said.

Citizenship Act is law of land, those on government posts bound by it: West Bengal Governor

"West Bengal by its culture and people deserve to be peaceful. I have no hesitation in saying that the CAB is now an Act passed by the Indian parliament. It is under the Constitution, which is a tool for a powerful democracy," he said.

The Governor further said, "I with folded hands appeal to everyone that you have a way out under the Constitution if you think something has to be looked into. But being on road destroying trains, buses, railway station, and the police station is not the way out."

"I would expect everyone to contribute hugely for peace of the area. I appeal to the government, in particular, that it is time for you to proceed against miscreants and against those who are using social media for inflammatory messages," added Dhankar.

It is very difficult for me not to use onions while cooking because it adds taste to the food. Now, because of the shortage, we are forced to buy high-priced onions."

"As far as I think, the new stocks will start coming into the market in two weeks and the price might drop then. In the northern area of West Bengal itself, almost 15-20 trucks of onion are being used on a daily basis. However, we are supplying 8-10 trucks now as there is an acute shortage of the commodity," Jaishwar, a supplier, said.

Meanwhile, Ramodar Prasad, a member of Siliguri Onion and Potato Merchants Association, told ANI, "The production of onion was affected due to the unseasonal rains across the country. The market is down because many merchants aren't capable of buying onion at a high price. We are not able to provide the commodity as per the customer demands."

"The price will only decrease when there is enough stock of onions in the market. It may take some time for the situation to get back to normalcy. Earlier, I used to buy 3 kgs, now I only buy half kg," said a customer.

Tension between the West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar and the state government further escalated on Thursday after the Legislative Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee stayed away during his visit.

“My secretary received a call from the assembly secretary that the Speaker wants to have lunch with me. They even extended the invite to my wife. I may not agree with the speaker, but I was happy with the invite. But what happened suddenly that the speaker could not be present here. Everything happened in one and a half hours when I was informed that the speaker will not remain available,” said the Governor.

With none to receive him at the gate and his designated gate being locked up, he alleged it was a total collapse of democracy in the state.

“There was not a single person to show me around the Assembly premises, let alone offering me anything. The Assembly may not be in session but it doesn’t mean it will remain closed. The departments stay open. As a Governor, I’m here to ensure the Constitution is respected but I can see a total failure of the democracy in the state,” he added.

On the other hand, Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee said that the Governor was paying such visits merely for photo ops.

“None of the Governors in the country are doing what he is doing. He is visiting places only for photo ops. If he really wanted to visit the assembly, why didn’t he do it when the session was on? He visited when the assembly was not in session. If he really bothered about upholding the constitution, he should have signed the bills,” said Chatterjee.

Acting on a tip-off, a raid was conducted by a team of officers of Kolkata Police at the house of one Sheikh Sahajada in Ekbalpore where three persons were engaged in making bombs using explosive substance and equipment like iron pipes, and shrapnels.

During the interception, two persons fled. However, the police managed to nab Sheikh Sahajada.

“We had the information of bombs being prepared and explosive materials being stored at a house on 39A, Dent Mission Road, 2nd floor. On challenging them, two fled but we detained Sheikh Sahajada. During our search, explosive gunpowder and other bomb-making articles were seized and subsequently the detained accused was arrested from the spot,” said a senior police official of Kolkata Police.

Later, a case was registered at Ekbalpore under section 3 and 5 of the Explosive Substance Act read with under section 34 of the Indian Penal Code.

Sources in Kolkata Police revealed that the accused Sheikh Sahajada is a history-sheeter.

“The accused is a notorious criminal and has three previous cases against him including robbery, preparation to commit dacoity, and other charges against him under the Arms Act,” the official added.

This incident has left the residents fuming as they had no idea of such anti-social activities going on in their neighbourhood.

Kolkata: Police busts major bomb-making module in the heart of city

The Supreme Court on Friday issued a notice to IPS officer <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/former-kolkata-police-commissioner-rajeev-kumar-granted-anticipatory-bail-by-calcutta-high-court-253138">Rajeev Kumar </a>on an appeal filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) seeking cancellation of an anticipatory bail granted to him by the Calcutta High Court in connection with the multi-crore Saradha chit fund scam.

A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India Sharad Arvind Bobde asked the probe agency to present before it facts and explain why custodial interrogation of Kumar is required.

A person can avail anticipatory bail from the court after the police register an FIR against them but before they are arrested by them in a case. The Calcutta High Court had granted interim protection from arrest to Kumar last month.

The CBI in its plea challenged the High Court`s order and urged the apex court to allow the custodial interrogation of Kumar asserting that it was needed to probe whether he sabotaged the investigation in the case.

"He is a high-rank police officer. Why do you require his custodial interrogation? You need to explain before us the reasons for it," the bench asked the CBI.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said that the centre is closely monitoring the situation after cyclone Bulbul has hit Eastern India and assured the West Bengal government of full support.

Have spoken to CM @MamataOfficial and have assured all possible help. I pray to almighty for those who are braving out this adverse weather," Shah tweeted from his official handle.

"10 teams of NDRF in West Bengal and 6 teams in Odisha have already been deployed and are assisting the state administration in the evacuation, restoration of roads and in the distribution of relief materials. Additional 18 teams of NDRF have been kept on standby," he added.

The severe cyclonic storm Bulbul has wreaked havoc in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas region on Sunday.

Due to the speedy winds, several trees were uprooted and roads were blocked forcing the administration to carry out road clearance work.

In the morning today, several NDRF officials with the chain saw machines were seen cutting the fallen trees and making efforts to clean up the blocked roads.

Yesterday, after Bulbul hit Odisha, a couple of roads were also blocked in Kendrapada causing traffic snarls.

The fallen trees were later cleared by NDRF officials.The very severe cyclonic storm Bulbul has crossed West Bengal Coast close to Sunderban Dhanchi forest from 8:30 pm to 11:30 pm on Saturday.

"Presently, this cyclonic storm Bulbul lies off the coast of Bangladesh and adjoining areas. It is now away from West Bengal and losing its intensity. We are expecting that the cyclonic storm will become a depression within the next 12 hours. A wind warning is there so fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea in the next 24 hours," GC Das, Alipore IMD Director told ANI.&nbsp;
