The Bangladesh government on Tuesday (Jul&nbsp;23) officially lodged a protest against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's recent statement about offering "shelter to helpless people" from violence-hit Bangladesh.

The neighbouring country has sent an official note to India regarding the matter.

"With due respect to the West Bengal Chief Minister, with whom we share a very close relationship, we want to make it clear that her comments have a lot of scope for confusion. Therefore, we have given a note to the Government of India," Hasan Mahmud, Bangladesh's Foreign Minister, said.

It may be mentioned here, that on July 21, in the wake of the rising violence and protests in Bangladesh, Mamata Banerjee said that the state would keep its doors open for "people in distress" from the neighbouring country and offer them shelter.

She also noted that commenting on foreign issues falls under the jurisdiction of the Centre.

Speaking at a rally, the West Bengal CM stated, "If helpless people come knocking on the doors, we will surely provide them shelter." Banerjee justified her stance by referring to the United Nations resolution on refugees.

In India's West Bengal, a woman has reportedly committed suicide after being harassed and beaten up by members of the village panchayat (elected local governing body). News agency PTI citing police on Tuesday (July 2) reported that the woman from Jalpaiguri district was allegedly flogged in the Bogravita panchayat over a supposed extramarital relationship on June 29.

The incident happened just a day after a similar public flogging incident in the neighbouring Uttar Dinajpur district, where a local Trinamool Congress (TMC) party functionary was accused of punishing a woman and a man for alleged extramarital relations.

<h2>Public humiliation and suicide</h2>

Police, as per reports, have arrested four people, including two women, based on complaints from the deceased woman's husband and brother over the flogging incident.

The deceased woman's husband, as per an Indian Express report, said that his wife ingested a poisonous substance following the public humiliation and assault by other women from their village, which took place in front of the panchayat.&nbsp;

He stated, "My wife ended her life by drinking some poisonous substance after some women from the village beat her up in front of the panchayat. I complained to the police that my wife died because of these women, as she could not bear the humiliation of being summoned to the kangaroo court and being beaten up publicly."

Reportedly, rumours of an extramarital affair had surfaced when the woman went missing 10 days prior to the incident. Her husband had also filed a missing person report at New Jalpaiguri police station.&nbsp;

She returned home last Saturday, after which the panchayat head, Malati Roy, and her husband, Shankar Roy, purportedly summoned her. Her husband claimed that upon their arrival at the panchayat, they were both assaulted by Roy's supporters.

"Once she came back, my wife was summoned by the panchayat head and TMC leader Malati Roy and her husband Shankar Roy. When we went there, their supporters started assaulting me and my wife," he said.

However, Malati and Shankar Roy have denied organising a kangaroo court. Instead, Shankar Roy contends, "They were to file a police complaint, but they instead came to the panchayat. This woman had earlier eloped with another youth. It was probably due to this that their neighbours called and beat her up. We were not even present there. I reached there when the meeting was going on and the woman said she was going to the washroom. After a while, we came to know that she drank acid."

<h2>Political uproar in West Bengal</h2>

The incident has sparked political reactions, with BJP MLA Shikha Chatterjee criticising the ruling TMC government and demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Slamming Banerjee, she said: "Most of the women are oppressed during her rule. The CM should resign immediately. It is a heinous crime to summon someone to a kangaroo court and beat them up."

Earlier, TMC spokesperson Jayprakash Majumder had described such incidents as "social problems," and said "They should not be politicised. All political parties should come forward to bring such incidents to an end."

The Kanchanjungha Express operates between Silchar, Assam and Sealdah, Kolkata. The Sealdah Eastern Railway set&nbsp;up a control room at Rangapani station following the accident.&nbsp;

According to local officials, the accident also&nbsp;affected long-distance train services. Notably,&nbsp;New Jalpaiguri station in north Bengal is one of the largest and busiest stations in the&nbsp;NFR zone.&nbsp;

<h2>Indian PM, president react to accident</h2>

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X and called the accident "saddening". He also said that India’s Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw was on his way to the site of the mishap.&nbsp;

"The railway accident in West Bengal is saddening. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest. Spoke to officials and took stock of the situation. Rescue operations are underway to assist the affected," said PM Modi.&nbsp;

The Indian PM also announced that&nbsp;an ex-gratia of $2,394 (Rs 2 lakh)&nbsp;would be&nbsp;given to the next of kin of each deceased. Additionally, those injured will receive $599 (Rs 50,000).

The railway&nbsp;minister said that the cost for&nbsp;the treatment of all those injured will be&nbsp;borne by the state government.&nbsp;

Vaishnaw later took to X and announced an "enhanced ex-gratia compensation" for the victims:&nbsp;$11,968 (Rs 10 lakh) in case of death, $2,992 (Rs 2.5 lakh) for&nbsp;grievous and&nbsp;$599 for minor injuries.&nbsp;

The ECI data showed that the Trinamool Congress was leading on 30 seats, BJP on 10, Congress on 1 and CPI(M) on one seat. West Bengal has&nbsp;42 Lok Sabha constituencies in the 543-member Parliament.

The TMC, as per the data released by ECI at 2 pm, exhibited a powerful performance in Baharampur, Dum Dum, Jadavpur, Asansol, Birbhum, Krishnanagar, and Diamond Harbour.

TMC candidate and former cricketer Yusuf Pathan is leading with a significant margin in Baharampur, while the party's Sougata Ray and Sayani Ghosh are ahead in Dum Dum and Jadavpur constituencies, respectively.

In Asansol, actor-turned-politician Shatrughan Prasad Sinha is leading.

TMC candidates Satabdi Roy and Mahua Moitra are leading in Birbhum and Krishnanagar, respectively.

Notably, Mamata's nephew Abhishek Banerjee is leading with a staggering margin of 693,420 votes in the Diamond Harbour constituency. He has polled 1,011,196 votes till now in total.

This comes after exit polls had precited a majority for NDA in the state.

In Maharashtra, the INDIA bloc is leading on 28 Lok Sabha seats, while the three-party Mahuyati alliance is ahead in 17 constituencies.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leading on 13 seats, Congress 11, Shiv Sena (UBT) 11, NCP (shared pawar) on 6 seats, Shiv Sena (Shinde) on 5 seats, NCP on one seat, as per the Election Commission.&nbsp;

In Baramati, NCP candidate Supriya Sule is leading by 8689 votes while Sunetra Pawar is trailing behind.

Congress' Chavan Vasantrao Balwantrao is leading by a margin of 5372 votes against his BJP rival Chikhalikar Prataprao Govindrao.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the National Democratic Alliance won 41 seats while the UPA won 5 seats.

BJP was given more seats in the state by two exit polls. Matrize predicted the BJP to win 21-25 seats whereas Jan Ki Baat projected the party to win 21-26 seats, way above TMC's 16-20 seats.&nbsp;

PMARQ exit poll also gave BJP more seats, 22, against the TMC's 20. The exit poll released by D-Dynamics gave BJP 21 seats and TMC 19 seats.

Whether these predictions hold any ground will only be confirmed on June 4, the day when the Election Commission of India (ECI) will release official results.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP had won 18 seats out of a total of 42, whereas 22 seats went to the TMC. However, there was not much difference in the vote share of both parties. The BJP's vote share was at 40.25 per cent whereas TMC bagged 3 per cent more, 43.28 per cent.

This result came as a major setback for TMC and a huge success for the BJP, which had secured just 2 seats in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections with a vote share of 17 per cent.

Exit Poll 2024: From 2 seats in 2014 to 25 in 2024, BJP’s huge leap in West Bengal haunts TMC 

As the polling for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections entered its final phase on Saturday (June 1), a clash broke out between TMC and BJP workers injuring dozens at Meraganj in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district.

“Several people were injured in the clash between the TMC and BJP at booth numbers 40 and 41 in Meraganj,” police said.&nbsp;

TMC leader, identified as Bakibullah Laskar, alleged that his party worker was thrashed by the BJP in front of the police and that six of them sustained injuries in the clash.

“We were beaten (by BJP) in front of the police. Six of our workers were injured," news agency ANI quoted Laskar as saying.

Meanwhile, BJP accused TMC of attacking and wounding their booth agents, levelling counter allegations against the party.&nbsp;

“When BJP agents were on their way to sit in the booth, they were stopped on the way and beaten… Police went there… Later the police called the BJP booth agents and tried to make them sit in the booth… but after that TMC attacked… 2 booth agents were injured in this… a total of 7 were injured,” BJP leader Utpal Naskar said.

After reports of the incident surfaced, heavy police forces were deployed in the area.

The reports of violence came hours after a mob looted reserve Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and threw two VVPAT machines inside a pond in West Bengal.

The incident occurred in the South 24 Parganas district.&nbsp;

In a post on X, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) said, "Today morning at 6.40 am Reserve EVMs &amp; papers of Sector Officer near Benimadhavpur FP school, at 129-Kultali AC of 19-Jaynagar (SC) PC has been looted by local mob and 1 CU, 1 BU, 2VVPAT machines have been thrown inside a pond."

"Sector Police was a little behind. FIR has been lodged by the Sector Officer and necessary action has been initiated. The poll process in all six booths under the Sector is running uninterrupted. Fresh EVM and papers have been provided to the Sector Officer," it added.&nbsp;

The West Bengal police released a statement saying that action was taken against miscreants and legal action was initiated.

"This incident happened in the morning around 6 am, much before the polling process in Bengal. Police and CAPF immediately intervened and have taken steps against the miscreants. Legal action initiated. Polling in Bhangar started without any interruption and is going on peacefully," they said.&nbsp;

Lok Sabha polls: Violent clashes erupt between TMC and BJP workers in West Bengal, several injured

West Bengal&nbsp;Lok Sabha elections 2024:&nbsp;Voting is underway on Saturday (June 1) in the seventh and final phase of Lok Sabha elections in the east Indian state of West Bengal.&nbsp;

Trinamool Congress supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is up against Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party's election juggernaut in the state. While Banerjee has halted its route in Bengal during last two elections, the BJP's inroads into West Bengal have&nbsp;expanded in recent years.

The state will be voting in all seven phases of polling. 
 
West Bengal is the state with the third highest number of seats of 42 in the Lok Sabha, only behind Uttar Pradesh with 80 and Maharashtra with 48.
