The police responded in the "same manner" as they did after the body of a woman doctor was found at R G Kar hospital in August, another villager said. "We will continue our agitation till all those accused in the rape and murder of our minor daughter are arrested and convicts are punished. We also demand action against those who responded to the complaint late, which might have resulted in her death. Had the police acted promptly, the girl could have been rescued," Ganesh Dolui, a villager, said. The police, however, said the action was taken immediately after the complaint was received and an accused was arrested in connection with the alleged rape and murder of the girl. "After lodging of FIR at 9 pm on Friday, the police swung into action and arrested an accused this morning after an initial probe. Investigation is on and we are with the family of the deceased. Those involved in the arson at the police outpost and destroying of all important documents will be identified and action will be taken against them," the official added. Kultali TMC MLA Ganesh Mondal was chased away by the villagers when he went to the spot to pacify the locals who accused him of trying to support the "police inaction". Mondal later told reporters that he understood the grievances and anger of the people of the area but they should not take the law into their hands. Gawande: “Today queerness sells, so let it sell. It is misleading because I am not the first queer politician. The headlines are always decided by the newspaper and not by me. I think there is a certain way in which queerness is commoditised. I am the first gay national spokesperson of a political party so, some of those headlines were fair. It is just that a certain kind of queerness sells. When there is a trans-woman from a non-dominant caste community, it does not sell and that is the kind of conversation we need to have.”&nbsp;

WION:&nbsp;Is India behind the world in queer rights?

Gawande: “The levels of transphobia today in large parts of the West are much higher than here. In the Netherlands, the far-right has taken up queer discourse and become an Islamophobic queer rights movement.”&nbsp;

India is on its journey because in this country queerness is not yet a dominant identity factor.”&nbsp;

WION: You’ve spoken about how queers cannot be a vote bank in India. Why?&nbsp;

Gawande: “How can they be? Today, there are queer Adivasis, Dalits, and Muslims too. Those identities are under attack to a much larger extent today. Queerness in India does not have to make itself separate. When you go to the Court, you have to prove that queer people are different. But when you go into the political arena, you have to create solidarities with the differently abled communities, climate justice warriors, and those who are fighting hatred on all fronts.’&nbsp;

Gawande: “The incident is deeply shocking. It has stirred the collective conscience of this country. There is a valid critique to be levelled as to why only this incident. Does the sort of privilege of the victim matter? But I think we are looking at a bigger problem. We have an epidemic of sexual violence in this country. Our response to RG Kar and sexual violence has been “chauraahe pe lagaake, pathar maar ke maar daalo (drag them to the public square and stone them to death!.) That is not the right response.

WION: Why?

Gawande: “Because the perpetrators of sexual violence are not the exception, they are the norm. More than half of sexual violence is perpetrated by people who are known to the victim. You cannot exceptionalise it. That is not the solution!”&nbsp;

WION: Queer people have a greater mental health burden than straight people. Why?&nbsp;

Gawande: “That is the queer tax! You have to pay more to get a therapist. You have to pay more to travel by Uber at night because you don’t know if you’re safe on the metro. Queer people have to pay more to lead their regular lives. That is something that the government needs to acknowledge. This is a question of disparity of access to public spaces.”&nbsp;

WION: NCRB data showed that the rate at which young people are killing themselves is more than India's population growth rate. If you become an MP, how will you tackle this?

Gawande: “In 2020, I went with Supriya tai [Supriya Sule] to meet Ajit Pawar and I said that we need to have a helpline for LGBTQ+ kids and the immediate answer was yes, because that is something everyone can get behind. We cannot let our kids down.”&nbsp;

The Supreme Court on Tuesday (Sep 17) slammed the West Bengal government over its handling of the initial investigation into the murder rape of a junior doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.&nbsp;

"What you are flagging is of the utmost concern. So I can only share with you that we are ourselves disturbed by what we have (seen in the report)…and this is what the CBI itself has told us. They are themselves very concerned about the fact that this is what has happened."

"The meeting is scheduled for 5 PM today ie 16th September 2024 at Hon’ble Chief Minister’s Kalighat residence. The same delegation which came for the last discussions is requested to arrive at the venue at 4:45 PM today."

The previous meeting at Mamata's residence could not go ahead after the doctors demanded to livestream it to ensure full transparency.&nbsp;

The doctors also requested that a videographer be allowed inside the Bengal CM's premises to record the meeting. However, Mamata refused to allow any of the demands saying the case was sub-judice.&nbsp;

“As RG Kar issue is before the court, we cannot allow live streaming.&nbsp;I will do the minutes, sign it as well," said Mamata.&nbsp;

She also berated the protesting doctors by claiming they had "insulted" her by requesting the meeting but refusing to enter the house.&nbsp;“I have waited for 2 hours”, the CM added.

The CBI alleged that Mondal took an "unusually long time to arrive at the scene of the crime," even though it was "only a five-minute drive." According to the investigative agency, the Tala police station in-charge was "informed about the incident at 10.03 am but he reached the spot at 11 am."

Furthermore, the lawyer pointed out a "14-hour delay in registering an FIR," and also raised questions regarding the filing of a "general diary by the police, stating that the victim was lying unconscious".

"He was obligated to register the FIR. They tried to pass it off as a suicide. There was a clear dereliction of duty. Custodial interrogation of both individuals is necessary."

A ragpicker was injured in a blast at the intersection of Blochmann Street and SN Banerjee Road in central Kolkata on Saturday afternoon.

The injured man was identified as Bapi Das (58).

According to Kolkata police, "At around 1:45 PM, police received reports of a blast at the intersection of Blochmann Street and SN Banerjee Road. A ragpicker was injured in the explosion."

Police said the injured ragpicker disclosed his name as Bapi Das at the hospital and revealed that he had no place to stay and had been residing on the footpath of SN Banerjee Road.

The state assembly in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal on Tuesday (Sep 3) passed the anti-rape bill unanimously with full support from opposition. However, the amendments proposed by the Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, were not incorporated.

The bill comes amidst uproar over the rape and murder of a trainee&nbsp;doctor in the premises of the RG Kar Medical College in the state’s capital, Kolkata. The state’s chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, has faced calls for resignation by the opposition in the aftermath of the tragedy.

The bill, titled the 'Aparajita Woman and Child Bill (West Bengal Criminal Laws and Amendment) Bill 2024', was tabled in the house by the state Law Minister Moloy Ghatak.

The bill seeks capital punishment for those convicted of rape and if the victim dies or ends up in a vegetative state. Moreover, it provides for a life sentence without parole for those convicted of rape.

The state assembly was specially convened for two days starting September 2 in the wake of strong protests across the country.

The bill is aimed at amending the existing provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, “in their application to the state of West Bengal to enhance punishment and to constitute the framework for…expeditious investigation and trial of the heinous act of violence against women and children.”

The bill also provides for setting up fast-track courts for rape cases.

“To expedite investigations and ensure swift justice for victims, this Bill proposes dedicated special courts and investigation teams. These specialised units will be equipped with the necessary resources and expertise to handle cases of rape of women and sexual offences against children efficiently, effectively and timely, thereby minimising the trauma experienced by victims and their families,” it states.

The state’s chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, has faced calls for resignation by the opposition in the aftermath of the tragedy. The bill, titled the 'Aparajita Woman and Child Bill (West Bengal Criminal Laws and Amendment) Bill 2024', was tabled in the house by the state Law Minister Moloy Ghatak. The bill seeks capital punishment for those convicted of rape and if the victim dies or ends up in a vegetative state. Moreover, it provides for a life sentence without parole for those convicted of rape. The bill is aimed at amending the existing provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, “in their application to the state of West Bengal to enhance punishment and to constitute the framework for…expeditious investigation and trial of the heinous act of violence against women and children.” The bill also provides for setting up fast-track courts for rape cases. “To expedite investigations and ensure swift justice for victims, this Bill proposes dedicated special courts and investigation teams. These specialised units will be equipped with the necessary resources and expertise to handle cases of rape of women and sexual offences against children efficiently, effectively and timely, thereby minimising the trauma experienced by victims and their families,” it states. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urged the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to get it approved by the governor as soon as possible. "The opposition should ask the governor to sign the Bill, it is our responsibility to enact it after that. We want justice from CBI, death by hanging of the guilty," she said.
