At least 14 people were killed in a fire in central Kolkata&rsquo;s Burrabazar area, police said on Tuesday (Apr 29). The Kolkata Police said that the fire has been brought under control. Violent clashes broke out in the South 24 Parganas district of India&rsquo;s eastern state of West Bengal on Monday after supporters of the Indian Secular Front (ISF) clashed with the police during protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act.
South 24 Parganas became the second district of the state where protests against the new Waqf laws have turned violent after the Muslim-dominated Murshidabad.
The conflict began when police stopped Indian Secular Front (ISF) supporters near Bhojerhat on the Basanti Highway, where a large number of ISF workers had gathered from Bhangar and neighbouring areas of Minakhan and Sandeshkhali. The ISF supporters were heading towards Ramlila Maidan in central Kolkata to attend an anti-Waqf (Amendment) Act rally addressed by party leader and Bhangar MLA Naushad Siddique, reported news agency PTI.

&ldquo;This law is not just an attack on Muslims, it is an assault on the Constitution. We won't accept this Act. The government that supports such laws must go,&rdquo; he said. ISF also accused the BJP of trying to incite communal tension and the ruling Trinamool Congress of suppressing opposition protests. &ldquo;The chief minister has said the new Waqf law will not be implemented in West Bengal. We welcome that. But then why are police stopping our workers from attending a peaceful rally? Does the right to protest belong only to the Trinamool Congress?&rdquo; Siddique asked.

A senior cop confirmed some police personnel were injured in the clashes, while eyewitnesses said the cops conducted a lathi-charge to disperse protesters.
A large police force, including senior officers, was deployed to bring the situation under control. A high alert was sounded in the nearby areas.&nbsp; Videos on social media showed police motorcycles set ablaze and an overturned police bus with its windshield ripped out.&nbsp;
Last week, three people were killed, railway tracks were blocked, and there was arson and vandalism in Muslim-dominated Murshidabad district. Police arrested over 200 people in connection with that violence. It was also reported that more than 400 Hindus were forced to flee from the violence-hit areas of Samserganj in Murshidabad.
The Murshidabad violence was mentioned in the Supreme Court on Monday, and the petitioner sought a court-monitored investigation by a central agency into the violent clashes. The Supreme Court will hear 15 petitions challenging the new Waqf laws on April 16.

The CBI will file an appeal before the Calcutta High Court, seeking a death sentence for Sanjay Roy, who was sentenced to "life imprisonment until death" by a Sealdah court in the rape-cum-murder case of an on-duty doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, officials said Wednesday.
The agency received legal advice suggesting that the case may be categorised as the "rarest of rare", deserving capital punishment, the officials said.
The agency is likely to file the appeal against the Sealdah court order as soon as possible with detailed arguments in favour of capital punishment, they added.
The agency's plea seeking the death penalty for Roy was turned down by the trial court, where Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das said that the crime did not fall under the "rarest of the rare" category.

"I am sentencing you to life imprisonment, meaning till the last day of your life, for causing injury during the act of committing rape on the victim that led to her death...," he told Roy.
The West Bengal government has already approached the high court, challenging the verdict and seeking the death penalty for Roy.

The high court said it would hear the CBI, the victim's family, and the convict before deciding on the admission of the state government's appeal. The high court said it will hear the matter on January 27.

Namita Roy was just 26 years old when she gave birth to her son, 'Tsunami', in a snake-infested jungle where she and her family took shelter after deadly waves triggered by a massive earthquake devoured her home in Hut Bay Island in Andaman and Nicobar on this day in 2004.
Twenty years later, she remembers the day with a shudder.
"I don't want to recall that dark day. I was pregnant and busy with daily chores. Suddenly, I noticed an eerie silence and was shocked to witness the sea receding miles from our shore. We also noticed zugunruhe in birds," she told PTI.
"Seconds later, there was a scary susurration sound and we saw a huge wall of sea waves gushing towards Hut Bay Island followed by strong tremors. I saw people screaming and running towards a hillock. I had a panic attack and fainted.

"Hours later, I regained consciousness and saw myself among thousands of locals deep inside a hilly jungle. I was relieved to see my husband and my elder son. Most parts of our island were devoured by the monstrous waves. Almost all the properties were damaged," a teary-eyed Roy said.
She now lives in West Bengal's Hooghly district with her two sons Saurabh and Tsunami after her husband Laxminarayan died during the Covid-19 pandemic.
"At 11.49 pm, I had labour pain but there was no doctor around. I lay on a boulder and cried for help. My husband tried his best but could not get any medical help. Then he pleaded with some women who had also taken shelter inside the jungle. With their help, I gave birth to Tsunami amid an extremely challenging situation... the jungle was infested with snakes," Roy said.
"There was no food and I didn't have the courage to come out of the jungle, fearing the sea. In the meantime, my condition started deteriorating due to excessive blood loss. Somehow, I fed my newborn baby to keep him alive because he was premature. The other victims survived on coconut water. We spent four nights at Lal Tikri Hills in Hut Bay and were later rescued by the defence personnel. I was taken to GB Pant Hospital in Port Blair (on a ship) for further treatment," she recalled.
Hut Bay is about 117 km from Port Blair and the journey takes around eight hours by ship.
Roy's elder son Saurabh works in a private shipping company, while Tsunami wants to become an oceanographer to serve the Andaman and Nicobar administration.

"My mother is everything to me. She is the strongest person I have ever seen. After my father passed away, she struggled hard to feed us and ran her food delivery service, which she proudly named 'Tsunami Kitchen'. I want to become an oceanographer," Tsunami Roy said.
In 2004, large-scale devastation and loss of lives could have been averted as there was no effective warning system, officials said.
"At present, there are more than 1,400 warning stations around the world and we are fully prepared to handle such a situation," a senior official of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration said.

Last week, India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar reiterated that the government of Bangladesh was responsible for the safety of religious minorities in the country.

Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College rape-murder prime accused Sanjay Roy, in a dramatic turn of events, has claimed he was falsely implicated. Roy, who was charged in court last week, accused former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal of orchestrating a conspiracy against him, alleging that senior officers were involved and had threatened him.

Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested in August of this year for the heinous crime. On August 9, a postgraduate trainee doctor was found brutally raped and murdered on the premises of Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, located in the capital of West Bengal.

<h2>Framed?</h2>

Shouting from a police van after a court hearing on Monday (Nov 11), Roy told reporters that the former Commissioner framed him in the case and that other high-ranking officials were also linked to the matter.

“I am telling you it was Vineet Goyal who conspired the whole thing (rape and murder of RG Kar Medical College resident doctor) and framed me…They had threatened me and there were other big officers in it,” Roy alleged.

This comes as the Sealdah Court recently, on Nov 4, charged Roy under the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita.

Meanwhile, junior doctors from across the state, outraged by the brutal incident, have intensified calls for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to step in and demand strict punishment for those responsible.

Police said the incident took place in Uluberia’s Bazarpara area of the district. The victims were identified as 14-year-old Tania Mistry, 6-year-old Ishaan Dhara, and 8-year-old Mumtaz Khatun. Police said the blast erupted when some residents, along with children, were bursting firecrackers in ward number 27 of Uluberia municipality. The sparks ignited more firecrackers that were kept nearby, causing a blaze. The blaze led to a cylinder explosion in the adjacent house, and all the family members, including the killed children, were trapped. As two fire tenders reached the spot and the children were taken to hospital, doctors at Uluberia Medical College and Hospital declared them dead. According to a report by Indian Express, the West Bengal Fire Services Minister Sujit Bose expressed “deep sorrow” over the incident, saying, “It is tragic. I will visit the area.” The state's Union Minister for Education and Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar demanded a “thorough investigation” into the incident, the report said. Majumdar said, "This incident is heartbreaking amid Diwali festivities. In this situation, I am standing with their bereaved parents and family members. I humbly request the administration to stand with the families. At the same time, I demand a full investigation from the administration.” Sorrow and agony covered the town after the incident. The United States (US) said on Friday (Nov 1) that it would deploy B-52 bombers, fighter jets, refuelling aircraft and Navy destroyers to West Asia,&nbsp;in a readjustment of military assets as the Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group prepared&nbsp;to leave the region.

In a statement, the Pentagon said&nbsp;that deployments would take place in the coming months and demonstrated the flexibility of the US&nbsp;military movements around the world.

The Israeli army released video on Friday (November 1) it says shows the airstrike that killed senior&nbsp;Hamas&nbsp;official Izz al-Din Kassab in the southern Gaza town of Khan Younis.&nbsp;Reuters was not able to independently verify the location or the date of the video.&nbsp;Israel described Kassab as one of the last surviving high-ranking members of&nbsp;Hamas&nbsp;responsible for coordinating with other groups in Gaza.
