India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, and the Ghats of Pune. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday declared a holiday for all government and semi-government offices in the city and urged private organisations to allow employees to work from home. Schools and colleges remained were also closed as extremely heavy showers were predicted in the city and adjoining districts on Tuesday. The authorities have advised resident not to step out of their homes unless necessary. According to the weather department, several parts of the city recorded over 200 mm of rain in the last 24 hours. During monsoon, the rive overflows which results in inundating villages in Balotra with blackish, foul-smelling water.&nbsp;Congress MLA from Barmer's Baytoo constituency Harish Choudhary, slammed the minister for his remarks on the issue and said, "The minister has not just diverted the real issue but has also implicated that the government is incapable of addressing it and only prayers can help. This is ridiculous," PTI reported.&nbsp;Choudhary claimed that areas near the Jojari river are submerged, and contaminated water enter homes, farmlands and other buildings. Meanwhile, locals of the area backed the statement of the Congress leader and said they have been affected by the problem for several years now.&nbsp;"The situation had sparked protests in the affected villages several times. Many families had to shift out of their homes due to flooding and health hazards," a local told PTI.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to the IMD, a cyclonic storm near the north coast of Andhra Pradesh is expected to create a low-pressure area over the west-central and northwest Bay of Bengal around September 5, which would result in heavy rains.&nbsp;

“We expect extremely heavy rainfall in some areas of Jayashankar Bhupalpally and Mulugu districts, which is why we have issued an orange alert. Other areas will see heavy to moderate rains over the next five days," IMD officials told TNIE.

"Northern Telangana is likely to experience heavier rains compared to the rest of the state. The intensity is due to the combined effect of the monsoon trough and cyclonic circulation. However, the rainfall will be less intense than what we saw in the past week. Further intensity will depend on how the trough progresses.”

According to weather data as of 1 am on Thursday, Venkatapuram in Mulugu district received 56.5 mm of rain in the last 16.5 hours and Rangareddy district received 54.5 mm. Hyderabad experienced heavy rains on Wednesday night,&nbsp;recording 53.8 mm at Rajendranagar.

The weather department has predicted light to moderate rain in the city for the next 48 hours with winds up to 30-40 kmph. The minimum temperature is likely to settle around 23 degrees Celsius and maximum around 28 degrees Celsius.

The cyclone, which was expected over Saurashtra and Kutch regions, originated in the Arabian Sea due to a low-pressure condition over the Bay of Bengal on August 16. This rare cyclone is the fourth to develop in the Arabian Sea, the last being in 1944.

The weather department also said that Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Aravalli, and Saurashtra-Kutch region are to receive light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning.

Strong winds of about 40-50 kilometres per hour are expected over the region.

<h2>Aftermath of Gujarat rains</h2>

Many areas in Gujarat are severely waterlogged due to heavy rain&nbsp;between August 27 and 29, resulting in loss of lives and properties.

At least 36 people have lost their lives due to rain-related incidents. Over 18,000 have been evacuated from the flood-affected areas.&nbsp;

In the city of Vadodara, 24 crocodiles have been rescued from residential areas who came into the city after the water level in the Vishwamitri River rose, causing terror among locals. This happened as water was released from the Ajwa dam, which caused flooding in the region.

The central government on Sunday set up a team to assess the damage caused by rain and floods in Gujarat. The team is being led by the executive director of the National Institute of Disaster Management.&nbsp;

Samajwadi Party leader Shivpal Singh Yadav has called for more budget allocation for the UP Assembly, emphasising that if such heavy rains can affect the government buildings this much, then other areas&nbsp;might also be vulnerable to similar incidents.

"The Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly needs the budget the most. If this is the condition after a torrential rain, then the rest of the state is at the mercy of God," Yadav wrote in a post on X, along with the video.

Floods in Northeast

Northeast India has been hit by devastating floods that have tragically claimed the lives of many people. Kaziranga National Park, a wildlife sanctuary, was submerged by the floods resulting in death of six endangered rhinos while other wildlife also drowned in the park.

More than 1.8 million people have been affected across 3,000 villages, and 72 were killed since mid-May, according to state disaster officials.

The intensity of rain and floods has increased in the recent years&nbsp;and climate change is making it worse, claim&nbsp;experts.

As the waters retreat, the impact on wildlife from the flood is also being seen, including in Kaziranga National Park.

"Floods have affected humans and animals alike," Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said in a statement, adding officers had been "working round the clock to aid everyone".

On Monday, Sarma posted a video on social media showing a stranded rhino calf submerged up to its chin in water, stating that he had "ordered its immediate rescue."

Notably, Kaziranga is home to two-thirds of the world's remaining one-horned rhinos, classified as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List.&nbsp;

The park has 2,413 rhinos, according to a 2018 count.&nbsp;

News agency PTI reported that a 60-year-old man died after he got stuck with his scooter in a waterlogged underpass in Okhla. The deceased Digvijay Kumar Chaudhary was a resident of Jaitpur in Delhi, the agency added.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the bodies of three labourers were pulled out on Saturday morning from the rubble of a wall that collapsed at a construction site in the Vasant Vihar area amid heavy rain the day before, officials said.&nbsp;

In Delhi, the monsoon arrived Friday morning and the national capital recorded 228.1 mm of rainfall on day one, the highest since 1936 for the month of June.&nbsp;

The India Metrological Department (IMD) Saturday issued an orange alert for Delhi, predicting heavy rainfall for the next two days.&nbsp;

According to the IMD, 8.9 mm rainfall was recorded between 2:30 pm and 5:30 pm at the Safdarjung observatory, the city's primary weather station, and 12.6 mm at the Lodhi Road observatory.&nbsp;

Amid the waterlogging woes, Delhi's BJP Councillor Ravinder Singh Negi was seen rowing an inflatable boat in a show of protest against the national capital's "collapsing" infrastructure.

Negi accused the Delhi government of not getting the PWD drains cleaned before the monsoons which he said led to the situation.

"All PWD drains are overflowing. They didn't get it cleaned ahead of Monsoon. This has led to waterlogging...Vinod Nagar has submerged," Negi said while speaking to news agency ANI.

BJP MP Yogendra Chandolia from North West Delhi did a walkthrough in the waterlogged streets of his constituency accusing the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of not making any preparations during pre-monsoon to avoid such a situation.

On Friday (June 28), Delhi received its highest-ever rainfall in the last 88 years.&nbsp;

The Indian Meteorological Department said that from 8:30 am on Thursday (June 27) to 8:30 am on Friday (June 28) Delhi received 228 mm of rainfall, which marked the highest 24-hour rainfall in June in the national capital since 1936 when 235.5 mm of rainfall was recorded.

The MET department said that IMD's Safdarjung airport observatory recorded 234.5mm of rainfall between June 1 to June 28, which is the third highest in the last 124 years.

<h2>What happened in Xian?</h2>

In an online statement, the Chinese city's&nbsp;emergency management bureau said "Twenty-one people were found dead so far, and six others are still missing."&nbsp;This was after the state media&nbsp;had announced&nbsp;the death toll as&nbsp;four earlier on Sunday. 
 
A report by Reuters citing the video released by&nbsp;the official Xinhua news agency reported broken trees and rubble piling up along muddy roads in a village, with houses and infrastructure damaged or destroyed. 
 
The media report citing officials also warned that the Qinling Mountains in Xian will continue to witness extreme weather conditions which will lead to soil erosion and possibly further mudslides.&nbsp;

Additionally, flash floods also occurred in the village of Weiziping, situated in a narrow ravine two hours south of Xian. The&nbsp;national public radio CNR also reported that two houses were&nbsp;swept away with&nbsp;damage to&nbsp;roads, bridges, electricity supply and other infrastructure.&nbsp;

A hundred soldiers as well as firefighters were mobilised for the relief operations "which are continuing" on Sunday, added the media report.&nbsp;

<h2>Situation in surrounding regions</h2>

According to CCTV, some trains were also suspended in Beijing and the northeastern city of Harbin, on Saturday, due to heavy rain and strong winds.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, torrential rainfall in the&nbsp;southwestern Guangxi region's&nbsp;city of Nanning&nbsp;also led to flooding and waterlogging prompting local officials to set up cordons to allow drainage work on some roads, reported the Chinese state media, adding that some 3,900 police personnel were deployed to help.&nbsp;

In the northeastern province of Jilin, Chinese officials continued efforts to fortify a 300-foot breach in a river levee to protect 29 downstream villages, reported CCTV. Around 500 officers and soldiers, 62 vehicles and three construction machines have been dispatched to seal the breach, according to the media report.&nbsp;

The official Xinhua News Agency, on Saturday, reported that more than 40 people were rescued in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region after a flash flood swept away a road, trapping a number of people, on Thursday.&nbsp;

"In view of weather warning received from the state government for the next two days, all the Railway staff and labourers from the ghat section have been evacuated and lodged at Subramanya Road Railway station till clearance is received from the state government to move the staff," it added.

"Due to very very intense rainfall throughout, there is an accumulation of water in different sections of Central Railway Suburban section of Mumbai. We are reviewing the situation every 30 minutes," said Udasi.
