A Russian military officer has been detained by the Wagner group after he allegedly opened fire on a Russian mercenary vehicle.

According to reports, the incident took place on Monday while the officer was drunk. It is said that he dislikes Wagner and he shot at them out of spite.

Even though both groups fight on the same side, there have been several episodes of animosity between the Russian troops and the mercenary fighters. The Wagner group is currently fighting in Bakhmut.

A video posted on the Telegram channel of Wagner chief Prigozhin's press office stated that they have detained the commander of the Russian army’s 72nd brigade, Politico reported.

In the clip, he can be seen confessing that he gave the order to fire on the mercenaries’ vehicle and that he was drunk at the time.

The officer introduced himself as Lieutenant-Colonel Roman Gennadievich Venivitin, who appeared to have been roughed up by his captors.

Earlier, the group's boss said the Russian army had mined the roads Wagner used to leave the city of Bakhmut.

The latest escalation comes a day after Prigozhin criticised Russia's military leadership, claiming that the Russian army had lost control of some of its positions around Bakhmut, describing it as a "disgrace".

He appealed to Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and the chief of the general staff, Valery Gerasimov, to travel to the frontline and rally the troops, who he claimed were quietly retreating.

Chinese Defence Minister Li Shangfu has said a conflict with the United States would be an "unbearable disaster" for the world. Li made the comment during the Shangri-La security summit in Singapore over the weekend, adding that Beijing seeks dialogue over confrontation. "China and the US have different systems and are different in many other ways," said Li who was giving his first major speech since taking on the role. "However, this should not keep the two sides from seeking common ground and common interests to grow bilateral ties and deepen cooperation," he said. "It is undeniable that a severe conflict or confrontation between China and the US will be an unbearable disaster for the world." WATCH | Thaw in U.S-China relationship? Spotlight on Beijing's state-led development, calls to rethink ties Beijing blames Washington The statement by Li comes after he declined an invitation to meet with his US counterpart Llyod Austin, along the sidelines of Asia’s top security summit. Beijing shot down the plans and blamed the US for the recent escalation in tension. It said Washington should “earnestly respect China’s sovereignty and security interests and concerns, immediately correct the wrongdoing, show sincerity, and create the necessary atmosphere and conditions for dialogue and communication between the two militaries". Austin termed the cancellation of the meeting as 'unfortunate', adding that without dialogue, any small incident could "spiral out of control". "You've heard me talk a number of times about the importance of countries with large, with significant capabilities, being able to talk to each other so you can manage crises and prevent things from spiralling out of control unnecessarily," he said. "We would hope that they would alter their actions, but since they haven't yet, I'm concerned about at some point having an incident that could very, very quickly spiral out of control." At least two people were killed and more than 31 injured, including two children, after a missile struck a medical facility in the central Ukrainian city of Dnipro on Friday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed that missile was Russia-made, and called it a 'crime against humanity' as he shared a video of the place where the missile hit. It showed smoke coming out of the roofless buildings with blown-out windows. "Another (Russian) missile attack, another crime against humanity," Zelenskiy wrote on Twitter, describing the damage. "Only an evil state can fight against clinics. There can be no military purpose in this. It is pure Russian terror," he added. “There are 23 injured in Dnipro,” the head of the regional military administration Sergiy Lysak wrote on Telegram, after several buildings were hit. The fire covered 1,000 square metres of the medical facility, where a three-story building was partially destroyed, Lysak added. He added that rescue workers are searching for people under the rubble. Among the dead is a 69-year-old man. “He was just passing by when a Russian terrorist missile hit the city…,” the official added. Russia vs The West: What are tactical nuclear weapons? Zelensky said that with a strike on a medical facility, “Russian terrorists once again confirm their status of fighters against everything humane and honest.” Among the 23 injured are two boys aged three and six, who have been hospitalised along with 19 others, Lysak said. Three are said to be in a critical condition. A clip shared by the local media purportedly showed rescuers helping the badly injured people as they escape from the clinic through corridors full of rubble. Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office claimed that at least four people are missing following the attack in Dnipro. Earlier, Lysak claimed that the region came under a "mass attack...with missiles and drones" on Thursday night. "It was a very difficult night. It was loud," he said. "Dnipro has suffered." Dnpiro comes under fresh attack The latest attack on Dnpiro comes after the Ukrainian authorities claimed to have shot down 17 missiles and 31 drones launched from Russia overnight. Several drones and missiles hit targets in Dnipro and the eastern city of Kharkiv, including an oil depot. They said that Ukraine's capital Kyiv was also targeted, adding that bits of intercepted drones fell on the roof of a shopping centre, while a house and several cars were damaged. The local police in the United States reported a bizarre case after a man in Indiana was killed and two children were injured after they found a hand grenade while going through the belongings of their grandfather. The incident took place over the weekend in Lake of the Four Seasons, a community in the US state of Indiana.

According to a statement by Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez, the police believe that “someone” might have pulled the pin on the device. The 47-year-old man who died was later identified as Bryan Niedert, while the identity of the two teenagers, his 14-year-old son and 18-year-old daughter, who were injured was not known.

As per media reports, the two teenagers suffered shrapnel wounds and were taken to the hospital. However, their condition was not immediately known. Erik Longnecker of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in a statement said that they are supporting the Lake County Sheriff’s office and Porter County Bomb Squad in the investigation.

A bomb squad was called to their house where the explosion took place to check if any other explosives were at the house. While such incidents are not common in the US, they are not entirely unheard of. In 2020, a 12-year-old in Virginia died after what is believed to be a WW II-era hand grenade bought at a local flea market exploded.

Such incidents also prompted the FBI to issue a statement which said that some families of war veterans in the US are finding “unexpected, and highly dangerous souvenirs” among their loved one’s belongings which service members either brought home from their combat service or purchased them later.

It added that these devices are known as military ordnance and can remain intact for decades but explode without notice and also warned that they are “highly dangerous, and only a trained bomb technician should handle them.”

The federal agency also noted that there has been an increase in the number of calls they are receiving about such devices as large numbers of elderly veterans are now dying.

Special Agent Patrick Carolan, a bomb technician with the FBI, said, “People are often a little shocked and concerned to realise that they or their loved ones have been living with such a dangerous item in their home, sometimes for decades.”

Belarus has begun building military fortifications along its border with Ukraine, according to the Belarusian monitoring organisation Belaruski Hayun, as reported by the Moscow Times. Construction equipment and a line of miniature anti-tank concrete pyramids known as dragon's teeth were sighted 10 kilometres from Gomel, a city located 44 kilometres from the Ukrainian border as per Belaruski Hayun.

During World War II, dragon's teeth were commonly utilised to impede the advance of enemy vehicles and soldiers.

Their deployment in Belarus, a close Russian ally that granted Moscow permission to invade Ukraine through its territory in February 2022, comes ahead of a widely anticipated Ukrainian counteroffensive.

This week, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko called the Ukrainian counteroffensive "disinformation."

"There is no ‘counteroffensive,’ from my point of view, and there cannot be. It's simply madness,” Lukashenko said Thursday at a meeting of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation’s (CSTO) Parliamentary Assembly.

The Belarusian military will conduct territorial exercises in the Gomel area from May 11 to June 2.

After Ukraine's successful counteroffensive in the fall of 2022, which saw Kyiv regain swaths of the northeast and south from invading Russian soldiers, Russian forces began vigorously erecting defensive lines.

Mercenaries from the Wagner private military company (PMC) began building fortifications in the eastern Donetsk area in September, where Russia has been focusing its effort for months.

This "line" was supposed to run east from the Russian-Ukrainian border to Kremennoye, then south to Svetlodarsk. A line of this length would be around 217 km long, according to CNN.

Furthermore, Russia has built defensive fortifications along the left bank of the Dnipro River, where Russian soldiers fled after abandoning Kherson.

The construction of dragon's teeth has also been mentioned by governors of Russia's border areas with Ukraine, notably Belgorod region Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov.

Belarus' involvement in the Russia-Ukraine war

Belarus has always functioned as a launch pad for Russia's assault against Ukraine. Despite earlier promises from top Belarusian authorities that this would not happen, Russian forces invaded Ukraine via Belarus, and the nation has consistently supplied logistical support, supply lines, and medical treatment for Russian soldiers. This week, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko called the Ukrainian counteroffensive "disinformation." "There is no ‘counteroffensive,’ from my point of view, and there cannot be. Belarus' involvement in the Russia-Ukraine war Belarus has always functioned as a launch pad for Russia's assault against Ukraine. Despite earlier promises from top Belarusian authorities that this would not happen, Russian forces invaded Ukraine via Belarus, and the nation has consistently supplied logistical support, supply lines, and medical treatment for Russian soldiers. Russian military planes have utilised Belarusian airfields, and Russia had fired at least 717 missiles from Belarus as of mid-September, as per the European Leadership Network.
