Japan has a new island. A volcanic eruption has given the 6,000 islands Japan archipelago this new island.

It is located 1,200 km (745 miles) south of Tokyo in the Pacific Ocean, about 50km south of Minami Ioto, one of the southernmost islands of the Ogasawara group.

Approximately one kilometre in diameter, the new island is crescent-shaped. However, if history suggests that, the island's presence, however, could prove fleeting.

In terms of durability, ash and other fragments will not be able to withstand a constant battering from waves, but lava flows produced by volcanic activity might form a harder shell later on.

In the same area, there have been similar islands formed in 1904, 1914, and 1986, all of which have disappeared.

According to the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper, Japan's meteorological agency has warned that the latest eruption, which began late last week, could continue and that smoke and large chunks of ash could result from it.

It also said the coastguard had found deposits of pumice (volcanic rock) floating on the sea across a wide area after discovering the island from the air following the eruption on Sunday.

Indian Army personnel working with the UN Peacekeeping Forces in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) have played a key role in reaching out to the local population and saving UN assets amid a major volcanic eruption from Mount Nyiragongo.

Mount Nyiragongo is an active volcano which started spewing lava at 6.30 pm local time on Saturday sparking panic in nearby Goma town with a population of 600,000.

The Indian Army personnel are part of the MONUSCO or United Nations Organization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo with Indian Brigade Headquarters located adjacent to the Goma airfield. Within hours of the eruption, the Indian Brigade jumped into action to ensure there is no threat to UN and national assets and also made sure real-time updates on the volcanic eruption were passed on to United Nations.

The timely information by Indian peacekeepers, also known as "blue helmets" helped in bringing orderly civilian evacuation.

While the Indian Brigade HQ has been thinned out, with 70 per cent with camp being sent to Himbi Company Operating Base (COB) for safety, minimum strength continues to hold on to camp to ensure it continues to be in operation.

"Actions by the Indian contingent in the face of imminent danger has facilitated the smooth evacuation and protection of civilians and other UN personnel in Goma", Indian Army officials aware of the development on the ground told WION.

Indian Army has a brigade consisting of two Infantry Battalion groups, one level-III hospital, and sizeable strength of officers as military observers and staff officers in the mission. The total strength stands at around over 2,200. MONUSCO has 14,000 military personnel with India, its largest troop-contributing country. Other countries that are contributing troops to the UN mission in Congo are Pakistan, Bangladesh, South Africa, Nepal, Brazil, Malawi, Ghana, Uruguay, and Tanzania.

MONUSCO took over from an earlier UN peacekeeping operation – the United Nations Organization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC) – on 1 July 2010. The new mission has been authorised to use all necessary means to carry out the protection of civilians, humanitarian personnel and support the central African country's government.

According to the latest updates, most of the lava has flown towards neighbouring Rwanda, with a small quantity flowing towards Goma city. The United Nations in an internal security alert had informed the various country contingents as of now no immediate evacuation is required. But a majority of the country contingents including aviation contingents have been evacuated.

As of now, according to the latest ground reports, lava is unlikely to reach Goma. Meanwhile, the area is witnessing earthquakes of very low intensity intermittently.

Volcanic eruption in Iceland leaves behind a magmatic trail of orange hues

A recent swarm of earthquakes across south-western Iceland have put officials on alert for potential volcanic activity.

Southwest Iceland is a seismically active part of the world. More than 20,000 earthquakes have shaken the region this week, rattling the capital city of Reykjavik and keeping geologists on their toes as all signs point to a pending volcanic eruption, the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) reported.

Similar bursts of seismic activity in the country have previously caused volcanic eruptions, the office said.

Tremors signalling a potential eruption were detected on Wednesday afternoon, near Mount Keilir, inactive for the past 800 years, the Icelandic Met Office said.

A 5.7-magnitude earthquake was registered in the area last week.

"The magma is fracturing and it is so close to the surface... that we have to take it seriously," Freysteinn Sigmundsson, a geophysicist at the University of Iceland, told AFP.

While an eruption is possible, Sigmundsson cautioned that "it is not certain -- the situation can last for hours or even longer with many small earthquakes."

Police have cut off roads around the mountain, according to an AFP photographer near the area.

Although Keflavik International Airport and the small fishing port of Grindavik are only a few kilometres away, the area in the immediate vicinity is uninhabited and no evacuation was announced on Wednesday.

"In case of an eruption, we are expecting a small one, where lava is flowing. We are not expecting a large, explosive eruption. The impact on atmosphere, flights and living conditions of people will be minimal," Sigmundsson said.

A bit scary

In eight days, over 16,000 tremors have been recorded, compared to 1,000 normally for a whole year.

"I've lived in Grindavik all my life, but it's the first time we've had tremors this powerful and this frequent," said Kristin Birgisdottir, tourist chief in the small fishing town of just 3,500 inhabitants.

"It's always a bit of a strange experience. It's a bit scary, but you know the houses aren't going to collapse, so it's OK," said Erla Petursdottir, an HR manager.

Such intense seismic activity has not been recorded in the region since digital monitoring began in 1991.

Iceland is the most active volcanic region in Europe, with an eruption every five years on average.

The last eruption was at Holuhraun, beginning in August 2014 and ending in February 2015, in the Bardarbunga volcanic system in an uninhabited area in the south-east of the island.

That eruption did not cause any major disruptions outside the immediate vicinity.

But in 2010, an eruption at the Eyjafjallajokull volcano sent a huge cloud of smoke and ash into the atmosphere that led to the cancellation of more than 100,000 flights worldwide, stranding some eight million passengers.

No eruption has yet been detected but due to risks related to volcanic activity, all traffic near Keilir and Mt Fagradalsfjall is prohibited, including drone flights. — Almannavarnir (@almannavarnir) March 3, 2021 × The region has been under increased surveillance due to an unusual number of smaller tremors since the quake on February 24, which was felt in Reykjavik, and large parts of western Iceland. 3/3 Yesterday around 3000 earthquakes were detected and from midnigh around 800 been detected. Most activity after midnight has been near Fagradalsfjall, has moved a bit NE, compared to yesterday. No tremor been measured during the night, but earthquake activity is still active — Icelandic Meteorological Office - IMO (@Vedurstofan) March 5, 2021 × A bit scary In eight days, over 16,000 tremors have been recorded, compared to 1,000 normally for a whole year. Indonesia's Mount Sinabung spewed a giant ash cloud 5 km (3.1 miles) into the sky on Monday (August 10) in its second eruption in three days, emitting a thunderous noise and turning the sky dark, authorities and witnesses said.

Indonesia's Mount Merapi, one of the world's most active volcanoes, erupted twice on Sunday, sending clouds of grey ash 6,000 metres into the sky, the country's geological agency said.

The two eruptions lasted around seven minutes, according to the agency, and prompted local authorities to order residents to stay outside a three-kilometre no-go zone around the rumbling crater near Indonesia's cultural capital Yogyakarta.

The agency did not raise the volcano's alert status after the eruptions, but it advised commercial planes to be cautious in the area.

Local media reported that people in neighbouring areas including Sleman and Klaten heard strong rumbling sounds this morning.

Mount Merapi's last major eruption in 2010 killed more than 300 people and forced the evacuation of some 280,000 residents from surrounding areas.

That was its most powerful eruption since 1930, which killed around 1,300 people, while another explosion in 1994 took about 60 lives.

Indonesia has more than 17,000 islands and islets -- and nearly 130 active volcanoes.

The Southeast Asian archipelago nation sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", a vast zone of geological instability where the collision of tectonic plates causes frequent quakes and major volcanic activity.

Volcanic eruption at Indonesia's Mount Merapi sends ash 6 km high

A volcanic lava type inflammable liquid has been reportedly profiting out of the ground in Tripura's Jalifa village and has triggered panic among the local residents of the area.

It has gradually become a matter of concern for the Tripura state government, in North East India, which is highly vulnerable to earthquakes as it lies in seismic zone V.

This is the third such incident reported this year the state which is very close to Chittagong in Bangladesh.

Earlier in mid-April, at two spots, namely Baishnavpur and Ghagrabasti of Sunroom, lava-like liquid erupted along with fire and gas.

In the recent incident that happened only a few days back, the local villagers of Jalifa were scared to find lava erupting from the lower portion of the electric pole on the roadside and reported the matter to the fire extinguishing team and local police.

A team of firefighters rushed to the spot and tried to spray water and foam, but failed to stop the ongoing eruption that had already burned the spot.

Meanwhile, scientists from the Department of Science, Technology and Environment of the Government of Tripura also visited the spot.

After examining the spot and analysing the samples collected from the spot they concluded that the fire, smoke and other materials running out of the ground is due to a fault line that passes through that area beside the displacement of the underground tectonic plates in that region and which is creating huge subsurface heat causing the incident.

However, Avisek Chaudhuri, from the Tripura Space Application Centre, who is the leading scientist team viewed that there is very little chance of eruption of lava or an active volcano.

But the Science, Technology and Environment Minister of Tripura Sudip Roy Barman has expressed concern as the state has a history of recorded massive earthquakes earlier.

Barman said that the government is taking the matter.
