Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Monday, state media reported, in a visit the European leader has branded as a "Peace mission 3.0" after recent trips to Moscow and Kyiv.

The unannounced visit comes a day before NATO is due to hold a summit to mark its 75th anniversary, with setbacks in Ukraine set to dominate discussions, and follows Orban's surprise trips to Russia and Ukraine in the past week.

Orban, the friendliest EU leader towards Moscow, held talks with President Vladimir Putin on Friday about the war in Ukraine during a trip criticised by both Kyiv and the EU, which said it threatened to undermine the bloc's stance on the conflict.

Putin told Orban that Ukraine must withdraw its troops from regions that Moscow has annexed if it wants peace.

Hungary took over the European Union's rotating presidency at the start of July, and the EU's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said Orban's trip to Russia was purely a bilateral affair and he "has not received any mandate from the EU Council to visit Moscow".

In a short statement earlier, the Chinese foreign ministry said the Hungarian leader would meet Xi "for in-depth communication on issues of mutual interest".

Close to both Xi and the Kremlin, Orban has refused to send weapons to Kyiv, unlike his fellow EU leaders.

China and Russia's strategic partnership has grown closer since the invasion of Ukraine.

Beijing presents itself as a neutral party in the war and says it is not sending lethal assistance to either side, unlike the United States and other Western nations.

It has however offered a critical lifeline to Russia's isolated economy, with trade booming since the conflict began.

Orban was greeted at the airport by Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying, according to a photo the nationalist leader posted on social media platform X.

Major investment

Xi visited Hungary in May this year, for the final leg of a European tour that also led him to France and Serbia.

Following a meeting with Orban, Xi said Beijing placed "great importance" on its relations with the EU.

Despite its small size, the Central European country of 9.6 million people has attracted a flood of major Chinese projects in recent years, mostly related to battery and electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing.

The Hungarian government boasted about having around 15 billion euros ($16 billion) worth of ongoing projects originating from the Asian country.

Orban has been championing an "Eastern opening" foreign policy since his return to power in 2010, seeking closer economic ties to China, Russia and other Asian countries.

Last October, the Hungarian premier was the sole EU leader to attend the summit for Xi's flagship Belt and Road initiative in Beijing.

The police and authorities in Brussels sparked a political firestorm, on Tuesday (Apr 16) after the officials in the Belgian capital city ordered the shutdown of a controversial gathering of hard-right European politicians which was also to be attended by Hungarian leader Viktor Orban and former British Home Secretary Suella Braverman.

What happened at the event?

The gathering of the hard-right nationalist European politicians called the National Conservatism (NatCon) Conference descended into chaos after the Brussels police tried to shut it down over safety concerns.

The controversial event was also to hear from UK politician Nigel Farage, French right-wing candidate Eric Zemmour and former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki over the next two days, but as per Politico was shut down by the police just two hours after it began at the Claridge venue.

However, the police said that they would only stop new arrivals from entering the venue, but not stop the conference or remove people already inside.

The police arrived at the venue when Farage was addressing the crowd, and as the drama unfolded outside, he continued his speech saying that the decision to cancel the conference was “absolutely outrageous”.

One of the police officers who arrived at the venue of the event that was being held in the capital’s Saint-Josse Ten Noode region told the organisers that the mayor had decided to shut it down and that he had a three-page document outlining the grounds for the closure.

“The authorities decided to shut the event due to possibility of public disorder,” a police officer heard by Politico told one of the organisers.

The law enforcement personnel were ordered by Emir Kir, the mayor of the Saint-Josse Ten Noode, who later took to X and confirmed media reports that he ordered a halt to the event to “guarantee public safety.” He added, “The far right is not welcome.”

According to media reports, NatCon had a hard time securing a venue and had been rejected by two other Brussels venues before they managed to secure Claridge venue. The organisers reportedly said that some 600 attendees were expected to attend the conference.

‘Unacceptable’

The move to halt the event garnered criticism from Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo who took to X and called it “unacceptable”.

“Municipal autonomy is a cornerstone of our democracy but can never overrule the Belgian constitution guaranteeing the freedom of speech and peaceful assembly since 1830. Banning political meetings is unconstitutional. Full stop,” said De Croo.

Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s spokesperson called reports of police action at NatCon “extremely disturbing,” adding that he is a “strong supporter and advocator for free speech”.

Sunak was “very clear that cancelling events or preventing attendance and no-platforming speakers is damaging to free speech and to democracy as a result,” said his spokesperson.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Sunday (March 10) said that Donald Trump will not provide funds to Ukraine for its fight against Russia if he gets elected as US president in this year's elections.

This he said would further expedite an end to the war between the two sides.

Nationalist premier Orban lent his support to long-time ally Trump's bid to return to the White House after meeting the former US president in Florida late on Friday (March 8).

"He will not give a penny into the Ukraine-Russia war and therefore the war will end," Orban told state television late on Sunday (March 10). "As it is obvious that Ukraine on its own cannot stand on its feet."

"If the Americans do not give money and weapons, and also the Europeans, then this war will be over. And if the Americans do not give money the Europeans are unable to finance this war on their own, and then the war will end."

Orban stated that it was "another matter" how the conflict would come to an end with peace negotiations following a truce and how a secure and stable Europe would be established, however, first and foremost peace must be achieved and "he (Trump) has the means for that."

‘Donald Trump won’t give funds to Ukraine if elected,’ says Hungarian PM Orban

Hungary Prime Minister Viktor Orban faces a rare political crisis of his 14-year rule after the shock resignation of the country's president amid public anger over her pardoning of a man convicted in a child sexual abuse case.

Viktor Orban faces political crisis after Hungarian president quits

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Tuesday night (Jan 30) called her Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orban to express concerns over the mistreatment of a woman from Milan who faces 11 years in prison. Meloni's phone call came hours after the Hungarian ambassador to Italy was summoned to the foreign ministry in Rome.

Images of Ilaria Salis, 39, chained and cuffed by the Hungarian authorities during a court hearing went viral on Italian social media platforms, inviting criticism for the inhumane treatment meted her way. Several front-page headline stories in Italian media carried the image and questioned the Meloni government for keeping mum on the issue.

Giuseppe Conte, leader of Italy’s opposition Five Star Movement also attacked Meloni and said: "An Italian in chains, tied hand and foot in Hungary."

"Giorgia Meloni, we don’t care that Orbán is a dear friend of yours. We need to act with the utmost determination and raise our voices," he added.

Salis was arrested in the capital city of Budapest in February last year during a counter-demonstration against a neo-Nazi rally. She has been charged with conspiracy to commit assault causing grievous bodily harm.

Giuseppe Conte, leader of Italy’s opposition Five Star Movement also attacked Meloni and said: "An Italian in chains, tied hand and foot in Hungary." "Giorgia Meloni, we don’t care that Orbán is a dear friend of yours. We need to act with the utmost determination and raise our voices," he added. Salis was arrested in the capital city of Budapest in February last year during a counter-demonstration against a neo-Nazi rally. She has been charged with conspiracy to commit assault causing grievous bodily harm. While she has pleaded not guilty, the prosecutors claim that she came to Hungary to "carry out rapid attacks which could cause serious injury against people believed to be far-right". Top 10 world news: Terror attack on Indian Army, Orban calls aid to Ukraine 'bad decision', and more

A week after stalling an aid deal worth $54 billion to Ukraine, Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban has asserted that the money should not come out of the European Union (EU) budget, stating it remains a 'bad decision'.

A week after stalling an aid deal worth $54 billion to Ukraine, Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban has asserted that the money should not come out of the European Union (EU) budget, stating it remains a 'bad decision'. Orban justified his decision of vetoing the previous proposal saying Hungary's money was involved in the budget and therefore it had a say in the matter. "I am convinced that to give Ukraine 50 billion euros ($54.70 billion) from the EU budget for five years, in which there is no money for this, and by taking out a loan, that's a bad decision. Instead let's make a good decision, which is the Hungarian proposal," Orban was quoted as saying by Reuters. Quizzed about the possibility that the bloc's 26 other members might broker a deal between themselves and Kyiv, Orban said he would reserve his comments. "They have the possibility - if we don't agree on this - to resolve this outside the budget, but don't have the option of resolving this from the EU budget without Hungarian approval. They have the possibility, 26 members, to resolve this with a joint loan outside the budget. If this comes up, we will consider what we say." "We are not asking for anything, only that the budget should be implemented, but if they start amending the budget then the Hungarian interests will surface and we will negotiate accordingly," he added. Also watch | Hungary blocks Ukraine's EU membership bid Orban puts his foot down Last Friday, Orban put his foot down and delayed the deal until January next year, saying the European Council needed to come back to the proposal with proper preparation. EU chief Charles Michel refrained from divulging the details of the meeting. "I don't want to go too much into the details because I want to work with colleagues in the days to come, in the weeks to come to prepare a summit that will take place next year, early next year," Michel said. Also read | Ukraine next EU member? Kyiv may get membership lifeboat amid sinking wartime fortunes Orban tanking the deal came after the bloc opened membership talks for Ukraine. The war-ravaged nation has been desperate to join the EU, to consolidate the member nations in the war against Russia. Ukraine applied for EU membership in February last year, just four days after Russia launched an offensive on Kyiv. Initially, Orban had threatened to veto the plan as well but ducked out of it as other members called his bluff. (With inputs from agencies)

Hungary's Orban says $54bn aid to Ukraine from EU budget is a 'bad decision'

Members of Hungary’s ruling right-wing Fidesz party and allies of Prime Minister Viktor Orban will hold closed-door meetings with US Republicans over halting US aid to Ukraine, The Guardian reported Sunday (Dec 10).

According to the report, Márton Ugrósdy, the deputy state secretary for the prime minister’s political director’s office, and Attila Demkó, a leading pro-Orbán academic, along with members of the Hungarian embassy in Washington, will be participating in a two-day event hosted by conservative think-tank Heritage Foundation starting Monday (Dec 11).

Kelley Currie, a former ambassador under then-president Donald Trump, and Magor Ernyei, the international director of the Centre for Fundamental Rights, are expected to be on the guest list on the first day.

On the second day, some Republican Congressmen have been reportedly invited to join the closed-door discussions on Ukraine.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has warned Ukraine that his government will not support Kyiv in any international issue until the language rights of ethnic Hungarians there are restored.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has warned Ukraine that his government will not support Kyiv in any international issue until the language rights of ethnic Hungarians there are restored. Speaking in parliament, Orban, a hardcore nationalist, pointed out the 2017 law passed by Kyiv which restricts the use of minority languages in schools. Orban believes the law curbs the rights of roughly 150,000 ethnic Hungarians to use their native tongue, especially in education. "They want to transform (Hungarian schools) into Ukrainian schools and if that does not work they want to close them," Orban was quoted as saying by Reuters. "We do not support Ukraine in any issue in the international scene until it restores the laws that guarantee the rights of Hungarians." Also read | 'Let us open doors...': Pope appeals Hungarians to be more receptive to migrants Orban's bargaining chip Orban's statement comes days after European Union chief Ursula von der Leyen suggested the vision of an expanded EU that would include Ukraine. The bloc is expected to decide on whether to begin discussions on assimilating Ukraine into its fold or not in December. However, to begin such a negotiation would require unanimous backing of all 27 countries in the bloc. With the Hungarian PM seemingly miffed by Ukraine, it looks highly unlikely that Kyiv would have smooth sailing on the issue. Budapest has already shown that it can use its decisive vote to lengthen proceedings. Sweden has been unable to become a NATO member for over a year due to Orban's unwillingness to ratify the move. Watch | Military exercise comes as Sweden starts its bid to join NATO × During the same speech, Orban touched upon the topic and said he was not in a rush to approve Sweden's bid to join NATO and that there was no threat to Sweden's security. Budapest has cited what it called undue allegations by Swedish politicians that it had eroded democratic rights. "I wonder if there is something urgent that would force us to ratify Sweden's NATO bid. I cannot see any such circumstance," Orban said. Notably, Sweden sped up its process to join the nuclear-armed alliance after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February, last year. It submitted the official application in May but to become a member, all 30 NATO allies need to sign the ratification document. Every country has signed the document, bar Turkey and Hungary. 'We do not support Ukraine...': Hungary PM Orban lashes out at Kyiv

Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban launched a fresh attack on the European Union for conducting an "LGBTQ offensive", releasing a statement saying that his nationalist government would safeguard the country's Christian roots.

During his speech, the Hungarian Prime Minister also said that he hoped the European parliament elections, which are scheduled to take place next year, would bolster governments within the bloc that nullify the "federalism" illustrated by Germany and France.

Orban had passed a law in the year 2021 barring the use of materials seen as encouraging homosexuality and gender change at schools, mentioning the need to safeguard children from "LGBTQ propaganda" and thereby mounting a row with the European Union.

In the past, he has also engaged in conflicts with Brussels over other issues, including the rule of law, and reforms to Hungary's media and the judiciary.

The EU is "either an empire or (individual) nations ... We should not have any illusions: the federalists are trying to squeeze us out," Orban said.

"They openly wanted a change in government (in 2022) in Hungary," Orban said, adding that the same was now true of Poland.

Poland's parliamentary elections are scheduled for this autumn season when the conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party will seek a third term.

It has adopted many policies that intonate with Orban's, and both countries are sealed in a rule-of-law conflict with the bloc that has resulted in the hiatus of certain European Union funds.

Orban said a balance between federalists and nations unwilling to cede more powers to Brussels was upset when Britain left the bloc, and now only Warsaw and Budapest were "sticking to their (anti-federalist) stance."

He has meanwhile upped his anti-LGBT oratory as Hungary's economic troubles have spiralled. Annual inflation topped 25% in the first quarter.

"The EU rejects Christian heritage, carries out a replacement of its population via migration ... and conducts an LGBTQ offensive," he said on Saturday.

Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban condemns European Union federalism, LGBTQ 'offensive'

Hungary’s second-largest book store Lira is finding itself caught up in legal troubles after allegedly selling LGBT-themed British webcomic and graphic novels without closed wrapping. The book is aimed at teenagers and its story revolves around two gay teens who fall in love.

The popular story has also been adapted by Netflix as a romantic comedy-drama. A Budapest government office on Thursday imposed a 12 million forints ($36,000) fine on Lira, claiming that the bookstore had violated the country’s LGBT law. However, Lira has firmly denied all the charges and expressed its intentions to lock horns with the government on the legal battlefield.

Lira to fight legal battle

The creative director of Lira, Krisztian Nyary, was quoted by CNN as saying that the government cited vague laws to frame charges against the company and the hefty fine imposed was disproportionate. “As this is a resolution about a fine it cannot be appealed, it can only be attacked – in what way, our lawyers will assess. We will use all legal means at our disposal,” he said.

Vague laws

Several publishers have taken the initiative to voluntarily wrap their books in an attempt to comply with the controversial law in Hungary. However, it remains unclear whether this measure alone is sufficient to categorise the affected books as intended for adult readers.

Another point of contention is whether LGBT-themed books designed for adult audiences will also be required to be wrapped or if they can be sold without packaging.

This legislation faced strong criticism from human rights organisations and the European Union.

The European Commission responded by referring Hungary to the EU Court of Justice, arguing that the law "discriminates against people based on their sexual orientation and gender identity."

Hungary imposes heavy fine on book store for selling LGBT-themed book

Viktor Orbán, the Hungarian PM is calling for Donald Trump’s return to office. He claims that their shared brand of hard-right populism is on the rise worldwide. Watch this video for all details.

Why is Hungary’s PM Viktor Orbán calling for Trump’s return as US President?

This week Hungarian lawmakers passed a bill that will allow citizens anonymously to report on same-sex couples who raise children. This comes as Prime Minister Viktor Orban's government has been curbing the rights of the country's LGBTQ community in adopting kids.

Under this approved bill, people are allowed to contest the "institutionally recognised role of marriage and the family" and those who contest children's rights "to an identity appropiate to their sex at birth."

The country's constitution protects the "institution of marriage a formation between a man and a woman and also specifies the mother is a woman and the father is a man."

This latest bill also covers wide-ranging measures to make sure authorities and officials investigate complaints over everything from alleged workplace misconduct to corruption.

With increasing curbs on the rights of LGBTQ people, Hungary was cut off from European Union funding. In 2022, the European Commission brought a lawsuit before the European Court of Justice against Hungary for a 2021 law that discriminates against the LGTBQ community A majority of member states have joined the commission's side.

Justice Minister Judit Varga said that the main rule is that only married couples can adopt a child, that is, a man and a woman who are married. Ukrainian foreign ministry said on Tuesday (November 22) that Ukraine will summon Hungarian ambassador to lodge a protest over Hungary PM Viktor Orban wearing a scarf depicting some Ukrainian territory as part of Hungary. Orban wore the scarf at a football match.

Images in Ukrainian media showed Orban meeting a Hungarian footballer while wearing the scarf. News outlet Ukrainiska pravda said that the scarf depicted. a map of "Greater Hungary". The scarf reportedly also showed some territories of Austria, Slovakia, Romania, Croatia, Serbia as part of Hungary.

"The promotion of revisionism ideas in Hungary does not contribute to the development of Ukrainian-Hungarian relations and does not comply with the principles of European policy," Ukrainian ministry spokesperson Oleg Nikolenko wrote on Facebook.

He said that Ukraine wanted an apology and and a rebuttal.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Orban did not directly address the controversy over the scarf.

"Soccer is not politics. Do not read things into it that are not there," he wrote. "The Hungarian national team belongs to all Hungarians, wherever they live!"

The two countries have repeatedly clashed in recent years over what Hungary said were curbs on the right of ethnic Hungarians living in Ukraine to use their native tongue, especially in education, after Ukraine passed a law in 2017 restricting the use of minority languages in schools.

Ukraine to protest Orban wearing scarf showing Ukraine territory as Hungary's

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has declared the European Union’s sanctions against Russia ‘a step towards war,’ AFP reported. During a radio interview on Friday, Orban appeared to have shifted gears to deplore the EU’s economic measures against the Kremlin, which he considers “dangerous”.

"Anyone who intervenes economically in a military conflict is taking a position," Orban said during the interview. "Little by little, we are sliding towards war," he added. Orban further added that he will keep fighting against the EU’s sanctions on Russia and will ensure Hungary is exempted from them.

While condemning the EU’s military support to Ukraine, Orban added, “Now we are supplying destructive weapons, we are training Ukrainian soldiers on our own territory, we are imposing sanctions on energy... We are becoming an integral part [of the conflict]. We are not being shot at yet, but we are about to become belligerent. Europe is playing a very dangerous game."

Orban has also opposed the EU’s proposal to provide $18 billion in aid to Ukraine in form of loans. "Hungary is not going to accept that EU members take out loans together to help Ukraine," he declared.

Orban has seemingly intensified his criticism of Brussels’ Russia policy in the wake of the worsening economic situation at home. Inflation is soaring in the country, currently exceeding 20 per cent, while food prices have risen 45 per cent compared to the last year. According to Focus Economics, the Hungarian economy shrank 0.4 per cent on a seasonally adjusted quarter-on-quarter basis in the third quarter.

Now, Orban’s campaign is to blame the EU’s economic sanctions on Russia for Hungary’s poor state of economy. The government has already launched “national consultations” on the issue and put up posters around the country with the caption: "Brussels sanctions are ruining us" against a picture of a missile.
