Real's top scorer Karim Benzema had a shot cleared off the line in a lively first half while Toni Kroos came within inches of scoring when he waltzed through the defence and hammered a shot which&nbsp;Athletic&nbsp;keeper Unai Simon deflected on to the bar.

Substitute Nacho Fernandez rattled the bar in the second half while Serbian forward Luka Jovic left Simon flat-footed with a late header but watched as the ball bounced off the post and Sergio Ramos scuffed the rebound back at the goalkeeper.

Athletic, who beat champions&nbsp;Barca&nbsp;earlier this season, gave an astute performance in defence and also gave their hosts a few scares, with Kenan Kodro having a goal ruled out for offside and Inaki Williams forcing Thibaut Courtois to make a diving save.

It was&nbsp;Real's third draw in a row after 1-1 and 0-0 stalemates away to Valencia and&nbsp;Barca&nbsp;respectively, games in which they also played well but lacked composure in front of goal.

"I feel bad for the players because of the effort they put in. We are annoyed that we couldn't score with all the chances we had,"&nbsp;Real&nbsp;coach <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/champions-league-gears-up-for-final-16-draw-after-record-breaking-group-stage-268079">Zinedine Zidane</a> told reporters.

"The ball isn't going in for us at the moment but there's no need to be pessimistic. We have to remember this has been a good season for us. We've had a little bit of a sour ending to the year but we can't wait for 2020 to start."

Zidane's side are second in the standings on 37 points after 18 games, two&nbsp;behind&nbsp;Barca&nbsp;who beat Alaves 4-1 on Saturday.&nbsp;Athletic&nbsp;are seventh with 28.

"We are left with a bad taste because we hit the woodwork three times and had some other opportunities, so it's a&nbsp;real&nbsp;shame that we couldn't pick up three points," added&nbsp;Real&nbsp;goalkeeper Courtois.

"Athletic&nbsp;set up to frustrate us, we know how they like to play but when you have so many chances it's hard not to feel like it is two points dropped.

Athletic&nbsp;coach Gaizka Garitano did not shy away from the fact that fortune had favoured his side, who have not won at the Bernabeu since 2005.

"To get anything from here you have to have a bit of luck, but we ended the game very well," he said.

"To get a point here while creating chances in attack and not conceding any goals is not easy at all."

Champions League Final 16 Draw: Date, rules, possible scenarios for English teams and all you need to know

A freak goal from Valencia's Daniel Wass earned the Spanish side a 2-2 draw in an epic encounter against England's Chelsea on Wednesday that left both sides waiting to book their place in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/messi-scores-in-700th-match-as-barcelona-ease-into-knockout-stages-264968">Champions League</a>'s knockout stage.

Valencia, who missed a glut of chances, had taken the lead through Carlos Soler but goals from Mateo Kovacic and Christian Pulisic flipped the match on its head.

The Spaniards missed a penalty through Dani Parejo, but drew level late on when Wass netted a remarkable effort, shaping to centre before finding the net with a finish across goal.

The draw means both sides are on eight points after five games but Valencia have a better head-to-head record and so are second in Group H, with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-chelsea-and-nine-man-ajax-share-spoils-in-thrilling-4-4-draw-260245">Chelsea in third</a>.

Ajax Amsterdam sit top on 10 points after winning 2-0 at Lille, who are bottom with one.

Valencia visit last season's semi-finalists Ajax in their final group game and will have to win there to ensure they qualify, while Chelsea will book their place in the last-16 if they beat Lille at home.

"We nearly won it, nearly lost it. It was end to end, not that we wanted it to be," Chelsea boss Frank Lampard said.

Valencia coach Albert Celades added: "The sensation in our dressing room is that we have missed a very good chance to qualify for the next round. But to get to the last game with our fate in our hands is not bad."

Victory for either side at Mestalla would have sent them through and Valencia went ahead when Soler scored in the 40th minute after team mate Maxi Gomez had missed two gilt-edged opportunities.

Yet Kovacic levelled for Chelsea two minutes later, netting for the first time in 122 club games.

Chelsea's top scorer Tammy Abraham was carried off on a stretcher with a serious-looking injury before halftime, although Lampard said after the game the striker had only suffered a knock to the hip.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-valencia-roar-back-in-second-half-to-thrash-lille-260253">Valencia</a> defender Jose Gaya was also taken off on a stretcher after fulltime having collapsed on the pitch.

United States international Pulisic put Lampard's side ahead in the 50th minute after a lengthy VAR review ruled him onside.

Valencia forward Rodrigo Moreno missed an open goal later in the half and then the home side were awarded a penalty.

But captain Parejo was denied from the spot by Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, spurning a second penalty in the competition after also missing in the defeat to Ajax Amsterdam.

The Spaniards eventually levelled in the 82nd minute with a remarkable goal from Danish midfielder Wass, who looked set to cross from the right wing but instead flummoxed Arrizabalaga by firing a shot across goal which bounced off the far post and into the net.

Valencia should have won the game in added time but Rodrigo failed to connect properly with a cross from close range, while Chelsea had a shot cleared off the line before then and Valencia keeper Jasper Cillessen denied Michy Batshuayi.

"Parts of our performance I'm not mad on. We gave away too many chances. We missed a lot as well," said Lampard.

"They were arriving in our box too much. Credit to the players for their work-rate and hanging on in there, but sometimes you have to be more secure than that."

Valencia defender Ezequiel Garay added: "We had a lot of chances and we deserved to win but we have to believe we can win and go through in Amsterdam."

Chelsea thwarted by Valencia in Champions League thriller

World champion Marc Marquez won the Valencia GP on Sunday with a superb performance for his 12th victory of the season to ensure that the Repsol Honda team won the teams' world title.

The 26-year-old, who began the day behind Petronas Yamaha's pole-sitter Fabio Quartararo, overtook the French rookie with a superb move in the eighth lap and never looked back to finish the race in 41 minutes, 21.469 seconds.

Quartararo finished second, 1.026 seconds behind Spaniard Marquez, while Australia's Jack Miller was third for the non-works Pramac Ducati team.

Marquez, who won his sixth world title last month, recovered from an early fall to top the warm-up session earlier in the day but looked unstoppable in the race despite a slow start.

The victory meant that the Repsol Honda team captured the teams' championship ahead of Ducati, in addition to the constructors' title for a memorable triple crown.

Triple MotoGP world champion Jorge Lorenzo, who announced on Thursday that he would retire after the season-ending race, kept his cool in windy conditions that made racing tricky with a number of riders crashing out.

The 32-year-old Mallorcan, representing the Repsol Honda team, finished his illustrious career and an injury-blighted season in 13th place.

Industrial Facilities abandoned in Valencia

Valencia breathed life into their hopes of qualifying for the last 16 of the Champions League with a stunning second-half turnaround to beat Lille 4-1 at home on Tuesday.

Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen gave the French side a deserved lead in the 25th minute, but Valencia drew level in the 65th minute with an ice-cool 'Panenka' penalty from captain Dani Parejo.

The home side went ahead in the 82nd with an own goal from Lille defender Adama Soumaoro, who diverted Jose Gaya's low cross into the net.

French midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia stretched Valencia's lead two minutes later with an outstanding long-distance strike, and substitute Ferran Torres rounded off the win with a coolly-taken finish in the 90th.

The victory puts the Spaniards third in Group H on seven points, level on points with leaders Ajax Amsterdam and second-placed Chelsea who played out a thrilling 4-4 draw. Lille are bottom with one.

"This was a crucial game for our chances to qualify and we needed to win it, we worked hard and played with purpose," said goalscorer Kondogbia.

"We reacted well after conceding and in the end, we were much better than them which is why we scored four goals."

Valencia have had inconsistent results after sacking coach Marcelino in September and badly needed a win after conceding a stoppage-time equaliser to draw 1-1 away to Lille two weeks ago.

They produced a sluggish display in the first half, though, and fell behind when Osimhen fired past Jasper Cillessen after an attempted clearance from the home side took a ricochet and bounced into his path.

Rodrigo could have levelled on the stroke of halftime but was thwarted by a fine save from Mike Maignan and they were fortunate not to concede again when the lively Osimhen teed up Turkish forward Yusuf Yazici but he shot straight at Cillessen.

Lille would pay dearly for their wastefulness as defender Jose Fonte was penalised for handling the ball when he tried to block a cross and Parejo showed nerves of steel by calmly chipping the ball down the middle of the net.

The goal roused the Mestalla faithful and the players fed off their energy, producing a relentless finish to kill off their opponents.

Champions League: Valencia roar back in second half to thrash Lille

Valencia spoiled Frank Lampard's managerial debut in the Champions League by earning a morale-boosting 1-0 win at Chelsea on Tuesday after Ross Barkley spurned a chance to equalise by missing from the penalty spot.

Spain forward Rodrigo Moreno gave the visitors the lead against the run of play in the 74th minute of the Group H game, getting the slightest of touches on a free kick from Dani Parejo to send the ball into the roof of the net.

Chelsea continued to threaten and were awarded a penalty after a VAR review spotted a handball by Valencia defender Daniel Wass.

But Barkley sent the resulting spot-kick on to the crossbar and over and Europa League holders Chelsea fell to their first home defeat in European competition since losing to Paris St Germain in March 2016.

"We shouldn't lose the game. Clearly," Lampard told reporters.

"We had a fair few chances and then the penalty, which we miss. We have to keep our heads up. There is a long way to go and this is a lesson that teams at this level can hurt you."

Lampard became the first Chelsea manager to lose his debut Champions League match in charge –- 10 of the previous 11 had won, while Gianluca Vialli drew with AC Milan in 1999.

Valencia travelled to London reeling from a stinging 5-2 league loss at Barcelona in coach Albert Celades's first game in charge after the much-loved Marcelino was sacked, despite overseeing two top-four finishes and winning the Copa del Rey.

His dismissal bewildered the players, who began a media blackout after the decision, while influential defender Ezequiel Garay fiercely criticised the move in an angry post on social media.

Celades&nbsp;'hugely impressed'

But the Spanish side leave the English capital emboldened and with three points after producing a solid, professional display and celebrating their triumph with their small band of travelling supporters tucked in a corner of Stamford Bridge.

"It's difficult to forget about everything that has happened but I thank the players for welcoming me and their professionalism," coach Celades said.

"We are going to get back to normality little by little and I was hugely impressed by the effort we put in today. It was not the ideal situation but we have tried to close ranks and look forward."

Lampard's side went into the game in confident mood after beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 5-2 in the Premier League on Saturday and their supporters belted out the manager's name in his first Champions League game as a coach, after he won the competition in 2012 as a Chelsea player.

Visiting goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen was forced to make a pair of impressive saves to prevent the Londoners from taking the lead, turning away a powerful strike from Willian right before halftime.

The Dutchman then twice thwarted Marcos Alonso, parrying a low free kick early in the second half and tipping another set-piece effort from the Spaniard over the bar in stoppage time.

Chelsea were also dealt a setback with an ankle injury to in-form midfielder Mason Mount, who had to be taken off in the first half after a rash challenge from Valencia's Francis Coquelin.

"It's difficult to forget about everything that has happened but I thank the players for welcoming me and their professionalism," coach Celades said. "We are going to get back to normality little by little and I was hugely impressed by the effort we put in today. It was not the ideal situation but we have tried to close ranks and look forward." Lampard's side went into the game in confident mood after beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 5-2 in the Premier League on Saturday and their supporters belted out the manager's name in his first Champions League game as a coach, after he won the competition in 2012 as a Chelsea player.

Valencia beat<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/barcelona-goalkeeper-marc-andre-ter-stegen-to-miss-copa-del-rey-final-220904"> Barcelona</a> 2-1 to win the Copa del Rey on Saturday, ending the Spanish champions` four-year winning streak in the competition and denying them a domestic double.

Kevin Gameiro and Rodrigo Moreno struck first-half goals to give Marcelino`s dominant Valencia control of the final in Seville`s sweltering Benito Villamarin stadium.

Record 30-times Cup winners Barcelona struggled without injured forwards Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele but Lionel Messi pulled the Catalans back into the game with a close-range finish.

Goncalo Guedes missed a gilt-edged chance in stoppage-time for Valencia but they held on to win their first major trophy since last lifting the Cup in 2008.

"I`m so happy because for me, my family, it`s incredible," said Valencia captain Dani Parejo. "A club like Valencia deserves a lot more joy like this. I don`t have the words, it`s incredible.

"We`ve made history in a really significant year, our centenary year."

Valencia finished fourth in La Liga after a strong second half of the season, reaching the Europa League semi-finals and ending an impressive campaign with this victory.

By contrast, Barcelona`s campaign collapsed in the last fortnight as they threw away a three-goal Champions League semi-final lead to be eliminated by Liverpool before letting the Cup slip out of their hands.

Barcelona was bidding to lift themselves from their humiliation on Merseyside by securing the ninth domestic double in their history, but despite Messi`s efforts, they were over-run by a determined and well-drilled Valencia side.

Gerard Pique was forced to clear Rodrigo's effort off the line before Gameiro blasted Marcelino`s side ahead in the 22nd minute after good work from Jose Luis Gaya.

The Catalans failed to create openings and Rodrigo nodded home the second after Carlos Soler whipped a ball across the face of goal.

Messi struck the post with a delightful outside-of-the-boot effort before slotting home the rebound when Jaume Domenech saved Clement Lenglet`s header for his 51st goal of the season, but it was not enough.

"Valencia are worthy champions and it`s also been a good year for us," said Pique.&nbsp;

"It`s always a good year when you win La Liga but the expectation was to have an even better year and that`s not been the case. The season ends with a bittersweet feeling because it could have been better.

Lionel Messi's stunning two goals helped Barcelona come from behind to draw 2-2 against Valencia at Camp Nou in La Liga on Saturday.&nbsp;

Messi's brace helped his side rescue a point in a tough game also making him the first player in Europe’s top leagues to reach 20 league goals for the season.

French striker Kevin Gameiro and a Dani Parejo penalty helped Valencia take a two-goal lead before half-time against the league leaders.&nbsp;

However, it was a foul by Toni Lato that led to Messi halving the hosts' deficit six minutes before the interval with a spot-kick of his own.&nbsp;

Messi then struck again in the 64th minute, after Arturo Vidal had laid the ball off to him at the top of the penalty area.

Neither team could find a winner in the remaining 30 minutes of the match, but the draw ensured Barca avoided a first league loss since November and took them to 50 points from 22 games.

UCL: Jose Mourinho expresses frustration with starting eleven after losing to Valencia

Real Madrid produced another unconvincing display on Saturday but rode their luck to earn a 2-0 win at home to Valencia which allowed them to climb to fifth in the La Liga standings and soothe their recent troubles.

The European champions, who were humbled 3-0 by tiny Eibar last week, took a fortuitous lead when Valencia midfielder Daniel Wass nodded a Dani Carvajal cross into his own net in the eighth minute after former Arsenal defender Gabriel Paulista had failed to clear the danger.

The visitors, knocked out of the Champions League in mid-week, let Madrid off the hook on three occasions in the second half when Santi Mina and Paulista failed to hit the target with glorious chances from inside the area.

Valencia's Michy Batshuayi was then denied by his fellow Belgian and former Chelsea teammate Thibaut Courtois in the Real goal and moments later, down the other end, Lucas Vazquez sealed a barely deserved yet vital win in the 83rd minute, completing a quick-fire counterattack spearheaded by the tireless Carvajal.

The win enabled Real to capitalise on Espanyol's 3-0 defeat at Getafe and leapfrog the Catalans into fifth place on 23 points, three behind La Liga leaders Sevilla who visit Alaves on Sunday and two from champions Barcelona, who host Villarreal.

Real's mood after last week's debacle in Eibar had been lifted by a 2-0 win over AS Roma which sealed top spot in their Champions League group.

They were missing Toni Kroos, Casemiro and Marcelo though Spain midfielder Isco returned to the squad after a highly-publicised exclusion against Roma but still did not make the line-up. Homegrown midfielder Marcos Llorente was rewarded for his mature display on Tuesday with another starting berth.

Llorente provided some much-needed balance to the team which has been lacking in the absence of usual anchor Casemiro, and Madrid controlled the first half without giving their fans much to get excited about besides their opening goal.

Valencia came out with renewed energy and spirit in the second half and took the game to Madrid but failed to keep their cool whenever they managed to find an opening.

"We are tired after two very demanding games but we're very happy with the victory," Carvajal told reporters.

"We had a very good first half then Valencia took a step forward in the second half and had a couple of chances but they left space open and we managed to finish them off."

Real Madrid fumble their way to victory over Valencia

Juventus clinched a place in the Champions League knockout stages when a brilliant Cristiano Ronaldo assist set up Mario Mandzukic to give them a 1-0 win over Valencia on Tuesday.

The Serie A champions had struggled to break down Valencia's defence until Joao Cancelo slipped the ball to Ronaldo in the Valencia area in the 59th minute of the Group H clash.

Ronaldo wrong-footed Gabriel Paulista with some fancy footwork, giving him space to roll a low cross across the face of goal for Mandzukic to turn in from two metres.

Juventus top the section with 12 points from five games while Valencia, third with five points, were eliminated after second-placed Manchester United beat Young Boys 1-0.

"Valencia have the best defence in La Liga and it's not easy to score against them," said Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri.

"We got caught on the break a couple of times, we need to be more lucid when we go looking for the second goal," he said, repeating a criticism that he routinely levels against his team.

Needing a draw to qualify, Juventus took few risks and the first half produced only one shot on target for each side.

Ronaldo tested Neto with an early shot which the Brazilian dealt with easily while Juve goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny made a brilliant save under the bar to keep out Mouctar Diakhaby's header on the stroke of halftime.

Ronaldo, sent off in the first meeting between the teams in the group, tried again with a low free kick after the break but again Neto dealt with it comfortably.

Diakhaby had the ball in the Juventus net two minutes after Ronaldo's goal but the Frenchman had used his arm to deflect in a free kick and it was chalked off.

Paulo Dybala had a shot turned over by Neto and Mandzukic was close again from another inspired Ronaldo assist, the Portuguese this time controlling the ball on his chest and hooking it back in one move, as Juve cruised home.

"Our team is nine-tenths the same as last season but we have improved the speed of our passing and our execution, and Ronaldo gives us more self-confidence," added Allegri.

Juventus through as brilliant Ronaldo assist sets up Valencia win

Valencia will be going up against <a href="http://www.wionews.com/search?q=Juventus">Juventus</a> on November 27 in <a href="http://www.wionews.com/search?q=UEFA+Champion+League">UEFA Champion League</a>.

While training for the crucial match, Valencia goalkeeper Roberto Neto said his team has great expectations from this match and that results totally depend on their own performance.

"We have great expectations from this match. We really want to get a result here because at the end it will be the only result that will keep us alive (in UCL), and it depends only on our own performance. We will find a difficult atmosphere here. They are a top side and are upset about their last result in the Champions (League). But the most important thing is that we have great quality and all we need to do is play our own game. And this is all we need to do to get the result tomorrow," he said.

With Manchester United on seven points and facing a home game against bottom club Young Boys of Switzerland on Tuesday, Valencia really have to win at Juventus Stadium to keep their last 16 hopes alive.

Talking about the big match today, Valencia coach Marcelino Garcia Toral said that his team is quite excited for this match and they are coming with the intention to win.&nbsp;

''This is a football match that we await with great excitement. This is the best clubs' competition in the world. We're coming with the intention to win here. The result will depend on our performance. And with this in mind we are going to play this match. It will be a long match, a difficult one and it may be tortuous but the squad is in good shape. It will also be difficult for our opponents to play against us,'' he said.

Marcelino's men come into the game on a run of three straight wins and haven't been beaten away from home in eight matches across all competitions.

Cristiano&nbsp;Ronaldo&nbsp;is in hot form and gunning for revenge going into Tuesday's Champions League clash against Valencia after seeing red against the Spaniards in the away leg, with Juventus needing a draw in Turin to book their ticket to the knockout rounds of the European competition.

"Happy to have helped the team on another important win," the 33-year-old wrote on social media after scoring his tenth goal this season for the Italian giants in Saturday's 2-0 win over SPAL as Juventus opened up a record eight-point lead on the top of Serie A after 13 games.

Ronaldo&nbsp;was purchased by Juventus for €100 million ($113 million) from Real Madrid last summer to help their quest for the elusive Champions League title after finishing runners-up twice in the past four seasons.

But the Portuguese superstar is also proving to be a key element in the team's race towards an eighth straight Serie A title, with nine goals and five assists of their 28 goals this season.

No Italian team have ever achieved 37 points from the first 13 games, with&nbsp;Ronaldo&nbsp;becoming the fastest forward in the club's history to score 10 goals in all competitions.

"I don't not care about the numbers. I don't count anything, the important thing is that we take it home in May," said coach Massimiliano Allegri.

Next up is a Group H return leg clash against Valencia, who beat Rayo Vallecano 3-0 in La Liga at the weekend, but are midtable in Spain.&nbsp;

Juventus are top of the group with nine points after four games, with Manchester United two points behind and the Spaniards on five.

Ronaldo's Champions League debut for Juventus in September was marred when he was controversially sent off in tears after half an hour for a small push on Valencia defender Jeison Murillo in Spain.

The red card was his first in 154 Champions League appearances, but Juventus still went on to beat the Spaniards 2-0.

Ronaldo&nbsp;scored his first Champions League goal for Juventus and the 121st of his career against Manchester United in Turin earlier this month before a stunning comeback gave his former club a 2-1 win to delay the Italians' passage to the last 16.

'Best player in the world'

Despite his success on the pitch - leading the way in Europe with 31 goals this calendar year for both Real Madrid and Juventus -&nbsp;Ronaldo&nbsp;missed out on the world player of the year award to Croatia's Luca Modric.

There are also reports he has been snubbed for the final three in the Ballon d'Or for the first time since 2008, with the winner to be revealed in Paris on December 3.

Ronaldo&nbsp;- a five-time Ballon d'Or winner - spent much of last month vehemently denying allegations by former model Kathryn Mayorga that he raped her in Las Vegas in 2009.

He was dropped by Portugal for the Nations League internationals, with the European champions becoming the first team to book their passage to the semi-finals.

Leaving&nbsp;Ronaldo&nbsp;off the Ballon d'Or podium would be "madness," says Juventus&nbsp;sporting&nbsp;director Fabio Paratici.

"Only a fool can doubt&nbsp;his qualities," said Paratici.

"He is the best player&nbsp;in the world and the most important&nbsp;in the history of football.

"At this moment&nbsp;I see&nbsp;him very&nbsp;serene, as he has always&nbsp;been here&nbsp;at Juve. The fact that he cannot win the Ballon d'Or seems very strange, since he scored&nbsp;15 goals&nbsp;in one&nbsp;Champions League campaign (last season)," he said.

Colombian teammate Juan Cuadrado warned that&nbsp;Ronaldo's focus remains on the pitch, as he bids to add to his five Champions League titles between Manchester United and Real Madrid.

"Cristiano&nbsp;Ronaldo's main quality is his professionalism," said Cuadrado. "He's hungry for victory and he's come to the right place. We all think the same way he does."

Juventus won the elite European title twice in 1985 and 1996, but have finished runners-up seven times.

Cristiano Ronaldo prepares to face Valencia in must win Champions League clash

Barcelona drew 1-1 at Valencia after Real Madrid lost 1-0 away to Alaves, allowing Sevilla to go top of La Liga with a 2-1 home win over Celta Vigo on Sunday.

Here are five talking points from the weekend's La Liga action.

Pass king Arthur Barca's new style guardian

Even though Arthur Melo is just 22 and arrived from Gremio in the close season he already appears to have nailed the Barcelona style, playing as if he had been at La Masia all his life.

Barca were held 1-1 at Valencia on Sunday, a disappointing fourth game without a win in La Liga, but Arthur stood out for an impressive midfield display.

The Brazilian helped Barcelona keep the ball, dominating possession and taking the sting out of the game after a fierce Valencia onslaught in the opening stages.

Arthur attempted more passes at an away ground (142) than any player since Xavi Hernandez in 2012 at Levante (148), with 135 finding their targets.

Comparisons to the Barcelona legend have already been drawn and even though Arthur has a long way to go to reach those heights he has made an impressive start.

Madrid's impotence in front of goal

Over the years Real Madrid have been known for their array of attacking talent but for the first time since April 1985 they have gone four matches without scoring.

Julen Lopetegui's side let in a late goal to fall to a 1-0 defeat against Alaves at Mendizorroza and have not found the net in almost seven hours across all competitions.

Real's all-time top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo joined Juventus in July and nobody has taken his throne, with Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema struggling to match the Portuguese’s output.

With only two matches to go before Madrid face Barcelona at the Nou Camp in the first Clasico of the season, Los Blancos need to find their shooting boots quickly.

Simeone wins style clash against Real Betis

Diego Simeone’s durable Atletico Madrid met Quique Setien’s Real Betis on Sunday, a match between two sides with vastly different styles.

As usual, Atletico relied on their solid defence while visitors Betis’s possession game saw them keep the ball for much of the encounter.

However the outcome was decided when Simeone brought on striker Angel Correa, a player Spanish newspaper Marca described as the ultimate ‘antithesis’ of Betis.

The Argentine forward, "a direct, anarchic, chaotic player," drilled home the only goal to ensure Atletico moved third, ahead of rivals Real.

Correa takes risks and surrenders the ball easily but his explosive impact ensured pragmatism won out over possession at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Ambitious Espanyol huge at home

Now fifth in the table, Espanyol are exceeding expectations and, following a 3-1 win over Villarreal on Sunday, they are the only team to have won all four of their home matches.

Rubi’s side are playing good football and even though only 20,000 fans attended the game at their 40,000 capacity RCDE Stadium, they have been particularly good there.

Espanyol are only two points behind leaders Sevilla and while a title challenge is a long shot, midfielder Sergi Darder’s comments at the start of the season are starting to look less strange.

"We must try to win La Liga," said Darder. "We know that it's 99.9 per cent impossible, but we need to set ambitious objectives. There will be time to consider ourselves a normal team, but for now, we believe we are the best."

Sarabia stars as Sevilla emerge aloft&nbsp;

La Liga is more open than it has been for years and after eight games Pablo Machin`s Sevilla lead by one point.

On Saturday Real Madrid, Barcelona and Alaves were level on points before Atletico moved top on Sunday before being replaced by Sevilla who beat visitors Celta Vigo 2-1.

Barcelona had the chance to install themselves as the new leaders later on Sunday but failed to win at Valencia.

Machin has taken little time to get his ideas across at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan and his namesake Pablo Sarabia has been a big beneficiary.

The midfielder, who netted the opener against Celta, has hit nine goals in all competitions this season, more than any player in Spain bar Barcelona`s Lionel Messi.

Five talking points from the weekend in La Liga

Sevilla are the surprise leaders in La Liga after Lionel Messi could only rescue a draw for Barcelona away to Valencia on Sunday.

Barca started the day at the top of the pile and then Atletico Madrid enjoyed a couple of hours at the summit after edging past Real Betis at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Sevilla, however, usurped them both by beating 10-man Celta Vigo and Barca were unable to reclaim the lead in the late kick-off, held by Valencia to a 1-1 draw at the Mestalla.

It means Ernesto Valverde's side are a point behind Sevilla and without a league victory now in four matches, a dip that comes in stark contrast to their enthralling triumph over Tottenham in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Messi, mesmeric at Wembley, was on target again, his driven shot into the corner cancelling out a bizarre opener for Valencia, scored after just 78 seconds.&nbsp;

Ezequiel Garay claimed the final touch but Daniel Parejo's corner had been flicked on by Geoffrey Kondogbia, missed by Thomas Vermaelen and skimmed through off Gerard Pique's back.

Philippe Coutinho should have won it for Barcelona in the second half but took too long to pull the trigger and Jose Gaya was able to make the block.&nbsp;

"When we don't win we always think of it as two points lost," Valverde said.

"After Leo's goal, we tried everything but they defended well and we couldn't get the goal we wanted."

For Valencia, now unbeaten in six, this was another step in the right direction, even if they are finding it difficult to turn draws into wins. They move up to 14th.

"Leaving Barca for 90 minutes practically without a chance means that we have worked very well," Valencia coach Marcelino said.

Atletico and Sevilla's success also pushed struggling Real Madrid down to fourth. Julen Lopetegui's side endured a shock defeat away by Alaves on Saturday.

For all the talk of crisis at the top two clubs, however, this was Sevilla's day.

Pablo Sarabia headed in to open the scoring at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan before Celta defender Nestor Araujo was sent off for picking up two yellow cards in as many minutes.

'Lot of confidence'

Wissam Ben Yedder doubled the lead and while substitute Sofiane Boufal pulled one back for Celta, it proved too little to late. The victory is Sevilla's fourth on the bounce in the league.

"At the the moment we are playing with a lot of confidence," Ben Yedder said. "We are showing we can be consistent."

Atletico had earlier continued their own strong run after Angel Correa's goal proved decisive in an untidy 1-0 win over Real Betis.

Atletico sat seven points behind Real and Barca after winning only one of their opening four league games but as their rivals have stumbled, Diego Simeone's side have sprung into form.

"We look at everything quietly and continue to improve," Simeone said. "We have grown."

Simeone can take some of the credit too for the latest victory, after throwing on both Correa and Thomas Partey as substitutes in the second half. Thomas provided the assist.

"When the players respond, the coaches look better," Simeone said. "The teams that challenge up the top of the table are there because of the players they can bring off the bench."

The contest was billed as a classic clash of styles, with Atletico's stubborn defence up against the free-flowing Real Betis, who lit up the league last season with their flurry of goals.

"A great coach once said, the best Plan B is always to do Plan A better," said Betis coach Quique Setien.

They could also have gone top with a win, such is the scrunched nature of the top half, but instead, Betis slip to eighth.

"We have less points than our performances deserve," Setien added.

Ezequiel Garay claimed the final touch but Daniel Parejo's corner had been flicked on by Geoffrey Kondogbia, missed by Thomas Vermaelen and skimmed through off Gerard Pique's back. Philippe Coutinho should have won it for Barcelona in the second half but took too long to pull the trigger and Jose Gaya was able to make the block. "When we don't win we always think of it as two points lost," Valverde said. "After Leo's goal, we tried everything but they defended well and we couldn't get the goal we wanted." For Valencia, now unbeaten in six, this was another step in the right direction, even if they are finding it difficult to turn draws into wins. 'Lot of confidence' Wissam Ben Yedder doubled the lead and while substitute Sofiane Boufal pulled one back for Celta, it proved too little to late. The victory is Sevilla's fourth on the bounce in the league. "At the the moment we are playing with a lot of confidence," Ben Yedder said. "We are showing we can be consistent." Atletico had earlier continued their own strong run after Angel Correa's goal proved decisive in an untidy 1-0 win over Real Betis. Atletico sat seven points behind Real and Barca after winning only one of their opening four league games but as their rivals have stumbled, Diego Simeone's side have sprung into form. "We look at everything quietly and continue to improve," Simeone said. "We have grown." Simeone can take some of the credit too for the latest victory, after throwing on both Correa and Thomas Partey as substitutes in the second half. Thomas provided the assist. "When the players respond, the coaches look better," Simeone said. "The teams that challenge up the top of the table are there because of the players they can bring off the bench." The contest was billed as a classic clash of styles, with Atletico's stubborn defence up against the free-flowing Real Betis, who lit up the league last season with their flurry of goals. "A great coach once said, the best Plan B is always to do Plan A better," said Betis coach Quique Setien. They could also have gone top with a win, such is the scrunched nature of the top half, but instead, Betis slip to eighth. "We have less points than our performances deserve," Setien added.

Barcelona held at Valencia as Sevilla go top in Spain

Manchester United were charged by UEFA for arriving late for their goalless draw at home to Valencia in the Champions League, on Tuesday.

The European soccer body said on Wednesday.

As per media reports, the United team bus had been held up in traffic on the way to Old Trafford and arrived only 45 minutes before kickoff of the Group H match.

The game was put back by five minutes.

UEFA said that disciplinary proceedings had been opened against the English Premier League side for late team arrival and late kick-off.

Valencia were also charged over the late kickoff, along with "kit infringement" and the setting-off of fireworks by their supporters, UEFA said.

A fourth successive winless game increased the pressure on United manager Jose Mourinho who cut a deflated figure afterwards.

Man United charged over late arrival for Champions League match against Valencia

Champions League holders Real Madrid slumped to a rare defeat in the competition as they went down 1-0 away to CSKA Moscow on Tuesday, while Jose Mourinho's Manchester United misfired again in a 0-0 draw with Valencia.

While Bayern Munich were also held by Ajax, it was a happier evening for Pep Guardiola's Manchester City as they beat Hoffenheim 2-1, and Juventus were also comfortable winners thanks to Paulo Dybala's hat-trick.

Real were not expected to struggle in Group G as they look to continue their recent dominance of the Champions League, but Julen Lopetegui's side went behind inside two minutes in Moscow following a mistake by Toni Kroos.

The German's drilled backpass turned into a gift for Nikola Vlasic, and the winger on loan from Everton fired past Keylor Navas to put CSKA ahead.

Casemiro hit the post in the first half -- one of three attempts that found the woodwork for the visitors -- but Real were weakened by the absences of Gareth Bale and Sergio Ramos, while Luka Modric started on the bench.

CSKA held on, despite having goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev sent off in injury time, and they move above Real to the top of Group G.

"I am sure we will soon be scoring again and winning again," said Lopetegui, whose team have not found the net in three matches.

It was only Madrid's third defeat in the Champions League group stage this decade, but Real will nevertheless expect to bounce back next against Czech champions Viktoria Plzen, who were crushed 5-0 by Roma.

Edin Dzeko scored a hat-trick for the Italian side, with Cengiz Under and Justin Kluivert also netting.

At Old Trafford, the pressure continued to build on Mourinho as United produced another insipid attacking display in their goalless stalemate with Valencia.

They are now four games without a win, and Mourinho's decision to recall Alexis Sanchez -- after dropping the Chilean for the weekend defeat at West Ham United -- failed to pay off.

"Our attacking players aren't in their best moments of confidence and individual level," moaned Mourinho. "We thought with three or four chances we would score and win the game."

Dybala shines in Ronaldo absence
Mourinho's side are second in Group H, two points behind Juventus.

Juve eased to victory against 10-man Young Boys in Turin, with Dybala scoring a hat-trick to take centre stage in the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo, who was serving a one-game ban.

"We were without Cristiano, and at times it is easier with him in the side, but we have to be a great team both with and without him," said Dybala.

Guardiola saw Manchester City come from behind to beat Hoffenheim in Germany in Group F.

David Silva scored three minutes from time to get the Premier League champions back on track after they started their campaign with a 2-1 home defeat against Lyon.

Ishak Belfodil had put Hoffenheim ahead after just 44 seconds, but Sergio Aguero equalised in the eighth minute before Silva's late winner.

"This competition isn't always a red carpet. Manchester City is a fantastic club, but we don't have a history of having to fight and we fought for absolutely everything here," said Guardiola.

"This is one of the happiest days I have had at this club as it will help us going forward."

City next face Shakhtar Donetsk, who squandered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Lyon in France, in a game played behind closed doors.

Brazilian forward Junior Moraes scored twice for Shakhtar, but Lyon fought back to draw with goals from Moussa Dembele and Leo Dubois.

It was a good result for Lyon, whose fans were missing as a punishment for trouble at a game against CSKA last season, and they now top the group.

Meanwhile, Bayern could not hang on to the early lead given to them against Ajax when Mats Hummels headed in Arjen Robben's cross. Young full-back Noussair Mazraoui equalised to give the Dutch side a 1-1 draw.

Those sides are level atop Group E ahead of Benfica, who won 3-2 in a thriller at AEK Athens with Alfa Semedo scoring the deciding goal.

Champions League: Real Madrid suffer shock loss, Man Utd misfire again

Barcelona slipped up for the third time in a week but stay top of La Liga after Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid cancelled each other out at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday.

Real and Atletico began a pulsating derby less than three hours after Barca had scrambled to a 1-1 draw at home to Athletic Bilbao, but goalkeepers reigned supreme in the capital to ensure the grudge match finished goalless.

It means Real second, level on points with Barcelona, while Atletico are just two behind in fourth. Sevilla are third.&nbsp;

Gareth Bale had to be substituted at half-time with what the club confirmed was a thigh strain and is a doubt for the European champions ahead of their visit to CSKA Moscow on Tuesday. Bale will be assessed on Sunday.&nbsp;

It was a scenario Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde tried to avoid before his side's visit to Tottenham on Wednesday by resting Lionel Messi at the Camp Nou.

But the Argentine was needed in the second half after Oscar de Marcos gave Bilbao a deserved lead. Munir El Haddadi snatched Barca a point, diverting in Messi's shot with six minutes left.

After drawing at home to Girona and being beaten by Leganes, Barcelona head to Wembley to face Spurs short of rhythm and lacking confidence.

Barcelona will be without Sergi Roberto for the Champions League Group B clash after it was confirmed he had picked up a thigh strain.

The last time Bilbao took a point at the Camp Nou in 2004, Valverde was sitting in the away team's dugout during his first spell as Bilbao coach.&nbsp;

He faced questions after his bold decision to rest Messi with Tottenham in mind, along with Sergio Busquets.&nbsp;

"Leaving Messi on the bench is absolutely my responsibility," Valverde said. "He has four games in 10 days and I think it's good for Leo to rest, like Busquets, thinking of the Champions League.&nbsp;

"I know it was the right decision. It was a risk and on this occasion, it didn't come off."

'Intense' match

Lack of rotation was chief among the criticisms levelled at Valverde after Barcelona crashed out of the Champions League quarter-finals last season, with Luis Suarez admitting he regretted playing 90 minutes three days before the collapse against Roma.&nbsp;

Valverde has certainly acted. Of the preferred 11 that started a 4-0 win over PSV Eindhoven two weeks ago, eight started at least one of the three games since on the bench. Seven of those were required to come on as substitutes.

"We can't expect Messi just to come on and fix things," Suarez said. "We should have won the game before he came on, that's why we are Barca."

Real and Atletico face midweek Champions League matches away to CSKA Moscow and home to Club Brugge respectively, but there was no letting up on their part.

Thibaut Courtois came back to haunt his former club and Jan Oblak showed why he is considered arguably the finest goalkeeper in the world.&nbsp;

Courtois spent three seasons at Atletico on loan from Chelsea but this was his first Madrid derby for Real. He made the most of it, saving when both Antoine Griezmann and Diego Costa had only the Belgian to beat.&nbsp;

Bale could have won it for Real too but he sidefooted wide from close range towards the end of the first half and then had to be replaced.

Barca might feel spared but Real and Atletico seemed satisfied at the final whistle. Atleti maintained their resurgence after a miserable start to the season while Real steadied the ship following their hammering at Sevilla on Wednesday.&nbsp;

"We have not won because we didn't score but overall we have been very superior," Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui said.&nbsp;

"The match was intense," added Atletico manager Diego Simeone. "We had chances through Griezmann and Costa but they were saved by Courtois. It's a pity because we wanted to win but we leave with a good result."

LaLiga wrap: Barca stay top after Real and Atletico share derby spoils

Injured Mohamed Salah will&nbspmiss the opening match of Group A against Uruguay on June 15 as the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has announced after meeting Salah in Spain, where he is undergoing treatment, that the Liverpool striker won't be able to play for minimum&nbspthree weeks.

"The football federation reiterates that Salah will be at the World Cup, God willing, and will be out for no longer than three weeks," said Egyptian FA.

Egyptian Federation officials including the president Hani Abu Reda and the team doctor paid a morale-boosting visit to Salah in Spain where he is getting his treatment done.

The doctors said that Salah will at least need three weeks to recover completely from the shoulder injury that he received during the finals of UEFA Champions League match against Real Madrid. In the absence of Mo Salah, Liverpool lost to Real 3-1.

Mohamed Salah to miss opening Group A match against Uruguay due to injury

Spain may be one of the world's top tourist destinations, but many people in its biggest cities have grown exasperated with Airbnb-style rentals.

And now, their city councils are taking action.

Airbnb and other peer-to-peer rental websites have for years been credited with enabling lovers of travel and culture to find new ways to explore foreign lands.

However, complaints have abounded in Spain that greedy landlords are throwing out long-term tenants in order to cash in on the tourist flow and that the short-term leases are pushing up the rent.

By introducing a slew of new rules, Madrid's leftwing city hall plans to make it impossible for short-term rental companies to rent out 95 per cent of apartments in the Spanish capital by the end of the year.

To get a holiday rental licence homeowners will have to prove their property has a separate entrance from the rest of the building -- a condition that is in most cases impossible to fulfil.

Homeowners who rent their primary residence for less than three months a year will be exempt.

"We are aware that this is a very restrictive condition, and that is our intention," Madrid's city councillor for sustainable urban development, Jose Manuel Calvo, told AFP.

He said certain Madrid neighbourhoods have reached "the same saturation level" as Barcelona, where a boom in holiday rentals has drained the city's housing supply and pushed up rents, sparking a backlash against tourists that saw protesters take to the streets.

Locals out?

There are now around 9,000 flats in Madrid that are rented out to tourists, six to seven times more than in 2013, Calvo said. Of these, about 2,000 operate without a licence.

In some buildings landlords have evicted all local residents in order to rent their flats to tourists for more money, Calvo explained.

"The consequence is that these neighbourhoods end up emptying out gradually, and this must be prevented. There is still time," he said.

Madrid city hall in January stopped issuing new licences for tourist apartments, and only plans to resume licensing once the new system is in place.

Theme parks

Other cities in Spain, the world's second most visited country after France according to the UN World Tourism Organization, are also facing a surge in the number of sharing economy short-term rentals, threatening hotel businesses.

In the Mediterranean port city of Valencia the number of peer-to-peer holiday apartments has soared by 30 percent since 2016.

While the situation is not as critical as in Madrid and Barcelona, the city's left-wing mayor wants a raft of new regulations to be approved by July.

"It seems important to have rules in place that, without stopping this model of the sharing economy, are compatible with cities' desire to preserve the spirit of their neighbourhoods, without becoming theme parks," the city's economic development coordinator, Julio Olmos, told AFP.

The plan is to apply the same laws regulating hotels to tourist rentals. In practice under the new rules, only apartments on the ground floor or first floor can be legally rented out to tourists.

In the old town centre, the legislation will be even tighter. There, licences will only be awarded to flats in buildings specifically designated for holiday rentals.

Internet tracking

To ensure the rules are respected, Madrid and Valencia plan to follow Barcelona's lead.

The Catalan city employs 40 people tasked with poring through holiday rental sites to ensure that properties have the proper licences.

Between mid-2016 and mid-2017 Barcelona city hall, headed by a former housing rights activist, ordered the closure of over 2,300-holiday rental flats.

Fewer than 750 have obeyed the order, with legal proceedings underway against those still resisting.

Airbnb has, however, removed 1,500 ads for unlicensed flats, helping to return the properties to the regular rental market.

Palma de Mallorca, capital of Mediterranean tourist destination the Balearic Islands, is going even further -- it is poised to ban nearly all short-term rentals of private homes like those listed on Airbnb.

The island city saw the number of holiday flats jump 40 percent between 2013 and 2017.&nbsp

The surge is blamed for a shortage of long-term rental apartments, forcing some locals and seasonal workers to live in vans and campsites in the summer because they can't find affordable housing.

Detached homes will be available to rent for tourists only if they are located near the airport, in industrial areas, or in buildings not designated for residential use.

Detached homes will be available to rent for tourists only if they are located near the airport, in industrial areas, or in buildings not designated for residential use.

Barcelona responded to their shock Champions League elimination to AS Roma by beating Valencia 2-1 on Saturday in a subdued atmosphere at the Nou Camp, setting a Liga record run of 39 games unbeaten and taking them ever closer to another title.

Luis Suarez gave Barca the lead after a quarter of an hour by meeting a delicious outside-of-the-foot pass from former Liverpool teammate Philippe Coutinho, scoring with one touch from close range.

Club-record signing Coutinho then delivered an outswinging corner from which Samuel Umtiti headed in Barca's second in the 51st minute, shortly after Gerard Pique had saved Umtiti's blushes by clearing a shot from Valencia forward Santi Mina off the line following a slip by the France defender.

Captain Dani Parejo pulled a goal back for third-placed Valencia by squeezing an 87th-minute penalty under Barca goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, but the Catalans withstood an exciting final spell to move to within seven points of their 25th league title.

Ernesto Valverde's side lead nearest challengers Atletico Madrid by 14 points in the standings, with Atletico hosting Levante and fourth-placed Real visiting basement club Malaga on Sunday.

The Barca coach praised his players for putting the Roma defeat behind them but said their European exit had punctured their enthusiasm for the unbeaten record.

"This wasn’t a week to think about records, we don’t give it too much importance. It was more important that we picked ourselves up after a difficult week," Valverde told a news conference.

"It's normal that these players keep on breaking records. But it was a fundamental win in many ways. First of all, I am happy with the three points. We needed 10 points to win the league, now it’s seven."

With heavy rain falling in the city throughout the day, 30,000 seats at the 99,000-capacity Nou Camp were unoccupied and even when Suarez provided a slick finishing touch to Coutinho's wonderful pass, celebrations were muted.

Valencia had made a good start and winger Goncalo Guedes hammered an early shot at Ter Stegen, who made another impressive save to thwart the Portuguese later in the half after Gerard Pique had surrendered the ball.

The German goalkeeper also ran himself into trouble as he sent a pass straight at the feet of Valencia forward Rodrigo but redeemed himself by tipping the shot on to the crossbar and behind.

Lionel Messi was inactive for much of the first half but grew into the game in the second, narrowly volleying over the bar and fizzing a shot just wide after tearing through the Valencia defence.

Barcelona beat Valencia, set new LaLiga record of 39 games unbeaten

Manchester United have to continue fighting for the Premier League title regardless of the 13-point gap to leaders Manchester City, defender Antonio Valencia said.

United are second on 56 points with 12 games remaining but Valencia said the club cannot lose hope yet, pointing to how their cross-town rivals overcame an eight-point deficit in the final six games to pip them to the title in the 2011-12 season.

&quot;We lost a title when we were eight points ahead and there were only a few games left. Now, we have a lot more games to play and we need to keep fighting,&quot; Valencia told the club`s website (www.manutd.com). &quot;We need to keep going.

&quot;The important thing is to get the three points, playing at home, playing well, and we will carry on with this mentality until the end of the season.&quot;

United bounced back from a 2-0 defeat by Tottenham Hotspur last Wednesday to beat Huddersfield Town 2-0 on Saturday.&nbsp;

&quot;We have shown that we have the quality and conditions to fight until the end of the season,&quot; Valencia added.

United travel to 16th-placed Newcastle United on Sunday.
