India head coach Gautam Gambhir has opened up about the emotional challenge of leaving Sanju Samson out of the playing XI during the T20I series in England, revealing that the decision kept him awake at night. Samson, who was named Player of the Tournament during India’s T20 World Cup triumph earlier this year, was dropped after the opening match of the five-game series in England in July. India lost the first T20I, after which teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was handed his international debut in Manchester. Gambhir admitted that the decision was particularly difficult because of Samson’s contribution to India’s World Cup-winning campaign. Speaking to JioStar ahead of India’s home season against the West Indies, he explained the thinking behind the selection call. “In two years of my journey, that was the only night I could not sleep and I told this to Sanju because I knew that it was probably the toughest decision in my coaching tenure in a T20 format because someone who was player of the tournament, and then you have to leave him out after three or four games." And the reason was probably Vaibhav was in that kind of form as well and we had to win the series. “Because ultimately you are there and when you are playing for India, or when you are coaching India, you want to win each and every series possible. India head coach Gautam Gambhir has made it clear that teenage prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will have to wait for his opportunity to get in the playing XI. Gambhir's comments came after India won the third and final T20I against Afghanistan on Thursday (Sep 17) to complete the 3-0 whitewash. There was speculation that Sooryavanshi, 15, might play ahead of Sanju Samson in the final T20I, but Gambhir stayed with the tried and tested opening pair of Samson and Abhishek Sharma. Gambhir's decision paid off as both players scored two fifty-plus scores in three matches.
Gambhir confirms Sooryavanshi will not walk into the team ahead of Samson
"From Vaibhav’s point of view, it was again a very clear conversation that he has to wait for his opportunity. We know the kind of talent he has. We know what he can do, but again, someone who’s done extremely well over a period of two years (Sanju Samson), obviously, he will always be ahead of someone who’s just walked into the team. So, whenever he gets that run, he will get a longer run as well, and that is what Indian cricket is all about. You want competition, you want that talent in the dressing room, but sometimes that’s how cricket goes, whether you’re a 15-year-old or a 30-year-old. Gambhir's decision paid off as both players scored two fifty-plus scores in three matches. Gambhir confirms Sooryavanshi will not walk into the team ahead of Samson "From Vaibhav’s point of view, it was again a very clear conversation that he has to wait for his opportunity. When you have to wait for your opportunity, you have to wait for your opportunity," Gambhir said at the post-match presentation. The 15-year-old became India's youngest debutant two months ago in England when Samson was dropped after the first two matches of the five-match series. He managed 42 runs in the three games he got. In the next series against Zimbabwe, Sooryavanshi played all three matches and scored 151 runs at an average of 50.33 and a strike rate of 196.10. Gambhir, however, turned back to Samson, who helped India retain the T20 World Cup title earlier this year, for the Afghanistan series.

India head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi must wait his turn as Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma remain the primary T20I openers following a 3-0 series win over Afghanistan.

IND vs AFG 3rd T20I: Focus on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as India look to test bench strength

Sanju Samson may have helped India defend the T20 World Cup in March, but the batter has been under constant scrutiny for his form since then. His lack of runs in IPL 2026 and in subsequent T20I matches coincided with the rise of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who won the Orange Cap in IPL 2026 for scoring the most runs (776). Since the IPL, India have played three T20I series — against Ireland, England, and Zimbabwe - while the fourth series against Afghanistan is currently underway. I did not perform in two or three games and he was in form, and we wanted to win games in that series. It was very understandable from a leadership point of view. I have been in this situation as an IPL captain. I have also taken tough calls," Samson said after the second T20I against Afghanistan regarding Sooryavanshi being picked ahead of him in the England T20Is.The batter also addressed the online criticism regarding his lack of runs, sharing: "Being an Indian cricketer, it’s not easy to face failures, but that’s where my experience comes in. I try to shut out the noise and be confident. I come out and still keep scoring at a high strike rate — even taking chances, knowing that if I fail again, I’ll be facing a lot of noise again. But that’s the way we are built in Indian cricket, and I just go out there and try to contribute."
What Next for Samson and India?
After his match-winning 57 off 22 balls, Samson is almost certain to play the third and final T20I against Afghanistan on September 19. Earlier in the innings, Pacer Mayank Yadav made an immediate impact on his return to international cricket with a hostile opening spell, using his pace and extra bounce to trouble Zimbabwe's batters on the Harare surface. Mayank struck with the very first ball of the innings, dismissing opener Brian Bennett for a duck. He then removed Dion Myers for just 6 during the powerplay, leaving Zimbabwe struggling at 20/2 after four overs. At the other end, Prince Yadav kept the pressure on with disciplined bowling and claimed the wicket of Ben Curran for 10. Zimbabwe's troubles deepened when captain Sikandar Raza fell to Shivam Dube for only 4, reducing the hosts to 40/4 inside eight overs. Zimbabwe attempted to rebuild through Wesley Madhevere and Ryan Burl, who stitched together a valuable 32-run partnership. The pair rotated the strike well and capitalised on loose deliveries to steady the innings, helping their side move past the 80-run mark. However, India's bowlers regained control when leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi dismissed Burl for 26 off 35 balls in the 14th over, ending the resistance. Zimbabwe were 72/5 after 14 overs. Tadiwanashe Marumani then joined Madhevere for a fighting stand that lifted the hosts in the closing stages. Madhevere remained Zimbabwe's highest scorer with an unbeaten 39 off 35 balls, including three fours and a six. Marumani provided late momentum with a brisk 27 off 20 deliveries, striking two fours and a six. The duo added 57 runs from just 37 balls, helping Zimbabwe cross the 120-run mark despite losing Brad Evans and Madhevere in the final over. Zimbabwe eventually finished on 125/7 in their 20 overs. Mayank was India's most impressive bowler, returning figures of 2/18 in four overs. Prince Yadav also impressed with 2/19, while Ravi Bishnoi and Shivam Dube chipped in with one wicket apiece as India produced a disciplined bowling performance.

Will Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's debut at 15 increase chances of success? Cricket coach shares what he requires to repeat IPL form

When Vaibhav Sooryavanshi walked onto the international stage as a teenager, the spotlight naturally fell on his extraordinary talent. Social media celebrated the fearless youngster, fans marvelled at his composure, and cricket experts spoke about his limitless potential. But beneath every teenage sensation lies a story that stretches far beyond individual brilliance. International debuts at such a young age are rarely accidents. It is also a reflection of how Indian cricket has evolved into arguably the world's most efficient talent-production system, where gifted youngsters are identified early, tested rigorously and prepared for the biggest stage long before they receive an India cap. For decades, Indian cricket possessed an abundance of talent but lacked a seamless pathway from grassroots cricket to the national team. Today, that journey is significantly more structured. The board's emphasis on competitive age-group tournaments, stronger state associations, improved facilities, better coaching standards and wider scouting networks has ensured that talent is discovered regardless of geography. Not long ago, cricketers from smaller towns often struggled to gain visibility despite possessing immense potential. Pat Cummins praises Rajasthan Royals prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi after his record-breaking IPL 2026 performances. The 15-year-old smashed centuries and dominated SRH bowlers, leaving Cummins in awe of his extraordinary batting talent

Australia captain Pat Cummins has heaped praise on Rajasthan Royals sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi after the 15-year-old's breathtaking performances in IPL 2026. The teenage batting prodigy terrorised some of the world's best bowlers, including Cummins, with his fearless strokeplay and record-breaking knocks. Representing Rajasthan Royals, Sooryavanshi produced one of the most memorable campaigns of the season. He smashed the fastest century of IPL 2026 and later followed it up with a stunning 97 off just 29 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the eliminator. Speaking to Fox Cricket, Cummins admitted that bowling to the young star leaves virtually no room for error. "He's a talent. He hits the ball a long way; he hits very hard. Margins for error are very small. He's a real talent, pretty tough to bowl to," Cummins said on Sooryavanshi, speaking on Fox Cricket. The Australian pace spearhead also joked about Sooryavanshi's age and rapid rise in world cricket. "Wishing he were in high school, so I didn't have to bowl at him. It's just incredible. Like, I don't think I've seen batting like that, let alone from a 15-year-old kid. Whether he's 30 or 15, he's just a very good hitter of the ball," Cummins added.
