US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in a separate statement, also denounced the “shameful” bid by the ICC and said that Washington “reject(s) the prosecutor’s equivalence of Israel with Hamas.”&nbsp;

Blinken added that “this decision does nothing to help, and could jeopardise, ongoing efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement that would get hostages out and surge humanitarian assistance in.”

The immigration portion of the bill includes&nbsp;the “toughest set of reforms to secure the border ever,” said Biden.&nbsp;

With United States presidential elections just months away, Meta’s Oversight Board, on Monday (Feb 5) has determined a Facebook video wrongfully suggesting that United States President Joe Biden is a paedophile does not violate the company’s current rules, while also deeming the said rules as “incoherent”.&nbsp;

The oversight board, which is funded by Meta but runs independently, made a decision about the edited video of the US president which shows him with his adult granddaughter, manipulated to falsely appear that he inappropriately touched her chest.&nbsp;

The clip went viral last year prompting Facebook parent company Meta’s independent Supreme Court-style body of journalists, academics and politicians to open an investigation.&nbsp;

The investigation is said to be the first of its kind into Meta’s “manipulated media” policies when the distorted version of a video during the 2022 midterm elections showing Biden placing an “I Voted” sticker on his adult granddaughter’s chest and kissing her on the cheek went viral.&nbsp;

The clip was reported to the social media giant and its oversight board as hate speech. Meta’s current “manipulated media” bars certain types of doctored videos but only if they were produced by AI or make people appear to say words they never actually said.&nbsp;

The hearing comes amid concerns about using AI to influence the outcome of the elections as 2024 is a historic year with more than two billion people across the world set to go to the polls in 50 countries, including the US and India.&nbsp;

<h2>What did the board find?</h2>

The board found that the platform was technically correct to leave the video online as in the US president’s case “the video was not manipulated using artificial intelligence nor did it depict Biden saying something he did not.”

However, also the board said that the policy which allowed the clip to stay on the platform “is lacking in persuasive justification, is incoherent and confusing to users, and fails to clearly specify the harms it is seeking to prevent.”&nbsp;

The board insisted that “non-AI-altered content is prevalent and not necessarily any less misleading” than content generated by AI tools. It also urged the company to reconsider the policy “quickly, given the number of elections in 2024.”

In a statement, Meta said it was reviewing the ruling and would respond publicly within 60 days.

United States President Joe Biden's issue of age was once again re-ignited on social media after video footage of First Lady Jill Biden escorting him off stage, after he delivered the January 6 anniversary remarks, went viral.&nbsp;

RNC Research's X account shared a video which included the footage in which Biden just ended his speech near Valley Forge in Pennsylvania on Friday (Jan 5) after which his wife held his hand and led him away from the podium.&nbsp;

Social media users were left amused by the fact that Joe Biden's wife was allowed by the White House staff to rush to the stage and lead President Biden away from the podium before he by any chance hesitated awkwardly or walked towards the stage's wrong end in confusion, reported Fox News.

The Department of Defense waited until Friday (Dec 5) evening to make the announcement, a breach of standard protocol at a time when Washington is embroiled in two wars – the Israel-Hamas war and the Russia-Ukraine war.&nbsp;

Pentagon spokesperson said that its chief resumed “full duties” Friday evening, but remained in the hospital.

Several American media reports citing sources have also claimed that not only was the hospitalisation hidden from the public but also the US president for days.&nbsp;

However, according to a second US official as per Reuters, Biden maintained confidence in Austin and the two spoke on Saturday evening.&nbsp;

“I recognize I could have done a better job ensuring the public was appropriately informed. I commit to doing better,” said Austin, in a statement.&nbsp;

He added, “But this is important to say: this was my medical procedure, and I take full responsibility for my decisions about disclosure.” Austin said he will be “returning to the Pentagon soon.”

Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks was prepared to step in during Austin’s illness, and made some routine decisions on his behalf during the time, a Defense Department spokesperson told AFP.

Notably, Austin sits below Biden at the top of the chain of command of the US military and his duties often require him to be available at a moment’s notice to respond to any national security-related crisis.&nbsp;

<h2>Secrecy garners backlash</h2>

Politico was among the first of many media outlets to report that Austin had been in the hospital for three days before Pentagon officials told National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and other top White House officials.

According to Politico, Sullivan then informed Biden. It also said that Congress found out about Austin’s hospitalisation 15 minutes before Friday evening’s public statement.

The apparent cover-up of Austin’s hospitalisation has led Republican lawmakers to criticise Democrat Biden’s administration and have since demanded an explanation.

Top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, Senator Roger Wicker, accused the Pentagon of failing to inform Congress immediately about such matters and said that the incident further eroded the public’s trust in the Biden administration.&nbsp;

He also cited past failures of the current administration to quickly disclose information about national security incidents, including the appearance of a Chinese spy balloon over the US last year.&nbsp;

“When one of the country's two National Command Authorities is unable to perform their duties, military families, Members of Congress, and the American public deserve to know the full extent of the circumstances,” said Wicker in a statement.&nbsp;

The Pentagon Press Association which comprises of journalists who cover the Defense Department, in a statement expressed “significant concerns” over the apparent cover-up, saying that Austin was a public figure who had no claim to medical privacy in such a situation.

It added, “At a time when there are growing threats to U.S. military service members in the Middle East and the U.S. is playing key national security roles in the wars in Israel and Ukraine, it is particularly critical for the American public to be informed about the health status and decision-making ability of its top defense leader.”&nbsp;

The man accused of shooting and injuring three university students of Palestinian descent in the US city of Burlington, Vermont over the weekend pleaded not guilty to attempted murder charges on Monday (Nov 27).

The suspect, identified as 48-year-old Jason J Eaton, was arrested on Sunday, a day after the attack and appeared in court in Burlington where the judge had also ordered him to remain held without bond.

The three friends were identified in court documents as Hisham Awartani, Tahseen Aliahmad and Kinnan Abdalhamid, all aged 20. They all remain&nbsp;under medical care&nbsp;with gunshot wounds to the spine, chest and buttocks, respectively.&nbsp;

Two are in stable condition while the third sustained more serious injuries, as per officials.&nbsp;

All three live in different cities but were staying with Awartani and his relatives in Burlington for Thanksgiving. The police said that all three are of Palestinian descent with two of them being US citizens and the third a legal American resident.&nbsp;

All three were graduates of the Ramallah Friends School, a private Quaker school in the occupied West Bank and were now attending universities in the northeast US, their families said.&nbsp;

Eaton appeared for his arraignment in Chittenden County Criminal Court in Burlington via a video feed from the county jail where he has been detained since his arrest.&nbsp;

During a media briefing in Nantucket, Massachusetts, where he was spending the Thanksgiving holiday with his family, Biden also underlined that now was the time to "renew" the efforts on creating a two-state solution for peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

Twenty-four hostages were released by Palestinian militant group Hamas on Friday, which included 13 Israelis, 10 Thais and a Filipino.

On the other hand, as part of the deal, Israel freed 39 women and minors held in its prisons, the Qatari foreign ministry said.

"This morning, I've been engaged with my team as we began the first difficult days of implementing this deal. It's only a start, but so far it's gone well. Earlier this morning, 13 Israeli hostages were released, including an elderly woman, a grandmother and mothers with their young children, some under the age of six years old. Separately, several Thai nationals and Filipin&nbsp;nationals&nbsp;were also kidnapped by Hamas on the seventh, they were released as well," Biden said.

Biden, who had helmed US efforts to secure the release of the hostages and also put a pause to the brutal conflict between Israel and Hamas militants, said, "Today has been a product a lot of hard work and weeks of personal engagement. From the moment Hamas kidnapped these people, I, along with my team, have worked around the clock to secure the release. We saw the first results of this ever with the release of two American hostages in late October, followed by the release of two Israeli hostages."

The executive order signed at the White House requires developers of AI systems that pose risks to the country’s national security, public health or safety and economy to share the results of the safety tests and other information with the US government, in line with the Defense Production Act, before launching it to the public.&nbsp;

<h2>AI is all around us: Biden</h2>

Prior to signing the order, the US president said, “AI is all around us,” and that the technology is driving change at “warp speed”. He also noted AI carries tremendous potential as well as perils and to “realize the promise of AI and avoid the risk, we need to govern this technology.”

He added, “In the wrong hands AI can make it easier for hackers to exploit vulnerabilities in the software that makes our society run.”

In line with the new order, the country’s Commerce Department will “develop guidance for content authentication and watermarking” for labelling items that are generated by AI, said the White House.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the National Institute of Standards and Technology is tasked with creating standards to ensure AI tools are safe and secure before they are released to the public.&nbsp;

The government agencies, in line with the order signed, have also been asked to set standards for AI-related testing and address related chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and cybersecurity risks.&nbsp;

Notably, the new order also goes beyond the voluntary commitments made by tech giants and AI companies, including OpenAI, Alphabet, and Meta, which promised to watermark AI-generated content to make the technology safer.

“We can’t move at a normal government pace,” White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients recalled the US president giving his staff a directive while formulating the executive order and asking them to move with urgency. “Israel has a right, and I would add responsibility, to respond to the slaughter of its people,” the US president told reporters at the White House during a joint press conference with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese who is in the midst of a visit to Washington.&nbsp;

He also went on to accuse Hamas which has been ruling Gaza of “hiding behind” Palestinian civilians amid Israeli strikes but also called on Israel to follow “laws of war.”&nbsp;

“Israel has to do everything in its power, as difficult as it is, to protect innocent civilians. It’s difficult,” said the US president.&nbsp;

On Friday, (Oct 20), Biden said that he was "overjoyed" at the release of the hostages and thanked Qatar and the government of Israel "for their partnership in this work".

"Today, we have secured the release of two Americans taken hostage by Hamas during the horrific terrorist assault against Israel on October 7," Biden said in a statement.

"Our fellow citizens have endured a terrible ordeal these past 14 days, and I am overjoyed that they will soon be reunited with their family, who has been wracked with fear."&nbsp;

The United States president then pledged support to the families of the hostages saying that the work would continue to win the release of other Americans being held by Hamas since the attack.

"We will not stop until we get their loved ones home. As president, I have no higher priority than the safety of Americans held hostage around the world," Biden said.

"These individuals and their families will have the full support of the United States government as they recover and heal, and we should all respect their privacy in this moment," he added.

<h2>Mediation will lead to hostage releases 'very soon'</h2>

A Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman told German Welt am Sonntag newspaper that the ongoing discussions will lead to the release of hostages held captive by Hamas "very soon, especially civilians".

"I can't promise you this will happen today or tomorrow or after tomorrow. But we are taking a path that will very soon lead to the release of the hostages, especially civilians," Majed Al-Ansari said.&nbsp;

"We are currently working on an agreement under which all civilian hostages will be initially released," he added.&nbsp;

He further said that the release of the two American nationals "proved to us and our partners that the efforts made in the past days are feasible and must continue".&nbsp;

While expressing solidarity with Israel over the recent deaths caused by Hamas militants, US President Joe Biden reminded Israelis “not to get consumed by rage” and said that&nbsp;“it's important sometimes to take a step back and remember what we all are - human beings created with dignity and purpose.”

In an address in Tel Aviv on Wednesday, following a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other members of the war cabinet, Biden appealed for calm as the death toll continued to rise in both Israel and Gaza.

<h2>Majority of Palestinians not with Hamas</h2>

"I caution this. While you feel that rage, don't be consumed by it.&nbsp;After 9/11, we were enraged in&nbsp;the United States.&nbsp;While we sought justice and got&nbsp;justice, we also made mistakes," he said.

“Wartime decisions are never clear or easy,” he said.

"There's always a cost. But it requires being deliberate.&nbsp;It requires asking very hard&nbsp; questions.&nbsp;It requires clarity about the&nbsp;objectives and an honest&nbsp;assessment about whether the&nbsp;path you're on will achieve&nbsp;those objectives," he added.

Biden also stressed that the "majority" of Palestinians are not with Hamas, and added that they are also "suffering greatly”.

"The vast majority of Palestinians are not Hamas. Hamas does not represent the&nbsp;Palestinian people," he said.

"Hamas uses innocents, innocent&nbsp;families in Gaza as human&nbsp;shields, putting their command&nbsp;centres, their weapons and the&nbsp;communications tunnels in&nbsp;residential areas.&nbsp;The Palestinian people are&nbsp;suffering greatly as well," he added.

<h2>Mourns Gaza hospital deaths </h2>

Talking about the Gaza hospital bombing that left hundreds of people dead, Biden urged Israel to open the Gaza-Egypt border to provide humanitarian assistance.

"The United States unequivocally&nbsp;stands for the protection of&nbsp;civilian life during conflict.&nbsp;And I grieve, I truly grieve for&nbsp;the families who were killed or&nbsp;wounded by this tragedy," he added.

A majority of American voters ahead of the 2024 presidential elections have expressed concerns over the incumbent United States President Joe Biden’s age while in former President Donald Trump’s case, it’s the multiple civil and criminal trials he is facing, found a new national NBC News poll, on Sunday (September 24).&nbsp;

The poll also suggests that the Democrat incumbent president and Republican frontrunner might already be deadlocked in a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/should-joe-biden-and-donald-trump-retire-from-politics-636094">hypothetical rematch</a> over a year prior to the actual election.&nbsp;

<h2>Biden’s age concerns voters</h2>

The NBC News poll conducted between Sept 15 and 19 found a combined 74 per cent of registered voters have major concerns that Biden at the age of 80 does not have the necessary mental and physical health to be president for a second term.

“I know that he’s 80. I know that 80-year-olds are perfectly capable. I worry more about Biden’s physical health. He seems a little bit feeble and this job does take a toll,” Mary Lyon (53), a Democrat from Arizona told NBC News.&nbsp;

The incumbent president’s job disapproval rating is the highest since he took office, with a staggering 56 per cent disapproving of his administration and 41 per cent approving, reported NBC News.&nbsp;

The poll also found that only 37 per cent of registered voters approve of Biden’s handling of the economy while 59 per cent disapprove. At least 53 per cent of voters also disapprove of his foreign policy and 41 per cent approve.&nbsp;

Nearly six in 10 Democratic primary voters said that they want a Democratic candidate to challenge Biden for the party nomination in 2024.&nbsp;

<h2>What about Trump?</h2>

Trump, who is in the midst of&nbsp;several indictments and is the first sitting or&nbsp;former president to have his <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/explained-the-significance-of-donald-trump-mugshot-629224">mugshot </a>taken,&nbsp;is in the lead for the GOP presidential contest by more than 40 points.

The NBC News poll found that he is still the top pick among 59 per cent of national Republican primary voters while Florida Governor Ron DeSantis gets support from 16 per cent, followed by former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley at seven per cent.&nbsp;

The polls also show that Trump’s many legal woes have had little to no effect on his approval as the share of GOP primary voters who believe Trump should continue to be the Republican Party’s leader has increased from 49 per cent in June to 58 per cent now.&nbsp;

However, the NBC News poll also found that 62 per cent have either major concerns (52 per cent) or moderate concerns (10 per cent) about the former president facing multiple criminal and civil trials for alleged wrongdoing which includes his efforts to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/donald-trump-indicted-over-efforts-to-subvert-2020-elections-621512">overturn the 2020 presidential election</a>.

<h2>Biden vs Trump</h2>

Notably, Biden’s net favourability rating (39 per cent positive and 49 per cent negative) is higher than Trump’s (35 per cent positive and 54 per cent negative), according to the NBC News poll.&nbsp;

The poll also found that in the case of a Biden vs Trump hypothetical matchup, 58 per cent of Biden voters said their vote is more against Trump than for Biden. However, 57 per cent of Trump voters say their vote is more for Trump than against Biden.

US President Joe Biden is planning to sign a strategic partnership agreement with Vietnam during his state visit to the Southeast Asian country in mid-Spetember, Politico has reported citing three people with knowledge of the planning towards such a deal.

The agreement will reportedly allow for new bilateral collaboration between the US and Vietnam which will boost the latter's efforts to develop its high technology sector in areas including semiconductor production and artificial intelligence.

Reuters said citing a source that Biden was thinking of visiting Vietnam in September. Earlier this month, Biden had said that he would be travelling to Vietnam "shortly" as the country wanted to stregthen its ties with the US and become a major partner.

There hasn't been an official confirmation from the White House about specifics of the trip. There was no immediate statement from Vietnam's foreign ministry. Reuters reported that ministry spokesperson Pham Thu Hang on Thursday did not confirm or deny a possible Biden visit.

"High-level leaders of the two countries have agreed and are discussing measures to further deepen bilateral relation in a stable, substantive and long-term manner, and aiming to upgrade (the relation) to a new level when possible," Hang told a regular press conference as quoted by Reuters.

Officials have not said what the closer relationship might entail, but experts say it could include increased military cooperation and US weapon supplies.

US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will visit Hawaii on August 21, where deadly wildfires have been wreaking havoc for over a week.&nbsp;

The White House in a statement said Biden will meet first responders, survivors and government officials to assess the damage and take stock of the situation.&nbsp;

So far, at least 106 people have lost their lives in the Hawaii wildfires, along with the destruction of much of the historic town of Lahaina.

In a statement released Wednesday (August 16), the White House said, “The president continues to marshal a whole-of-government response to the deadly Maui fires, and he has committed to delivering everything that the people of Hawaii need from the federal government as they recover from this disaster.”

Earlier, Biden on Tuesday vowed to visit the archipelago at an event in Wisconsin. He said, “My wife Jill and I are going to travel to Hawaii as soon as we can.”

State governor Josh Green has warned that the final death toll from the Hawaii wildfires could rise up to two or three times its present level.

Earlier on Tuesday, Biden tried to justify why had not yet visited the crisis-hit region, while speaking to the media. He said he didn’t want to divert resources and attention from the humanitarian response.

<h2>Loss pegged at $5.52bn</h2>

The Maui Emergency Management Agency has estimated the net loss to be around $5.52 billion.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, a lot of Hawaii residents have expressed their frustration with the ‘slow’ recovery efforts.

One resident was quoted by BBC as saying that he got only $500 from the authorities so far, which was even less than the price of a night in most hotel rooms on the island.
