From coast to coast, the Universities in the United States are increasingly resembling a battleground. Students have been protesting against the Israel's war in Gaza and expressing solidarity with the Palestinians. A movement that began on the 17th of April with only 70 students at Columbia University in the New York city has gone from strength to strength despite threats of suspension and arrest. More than a dozen Universities & Institutes have joined the spreading protests, with Columbia University remaining the epicenter of this student protest movement. Large-scale arrests have been carried out by the police in Universities across the country. Chemical irritants and tasers have been employed to disperse students. But the students have remained steadfast in their demand that their institutions divest from companies that are enabling the brutal war in Gaza. Though this isn't the first time that University students in the U.S. have staged protests on campus, the crackdown on the student encampments have been particularly harsh this time. Mohammed Saleh brings you the details.

Viral videos show chaotic scenes on the island's dock, with many women fighting, ripping off hair extensions, and even losing their tops in the fights. Some watched the fights and recorded them, others just cheered on the battles. With a population of around 3,000, Tybee Island's police department had a hard time dealing with the huge inflow of festival attendees. While the exact number of participants this year remains unconfirmed, last year's event drew an estimated 40,000 to 55,000 revellers to the three-square-mile island. A few years ago, it moved to Tybee Island. Originally planned as a celebration of HBCU culture, the festival has turned into something like spring break and has drawn criticism for incidents of criminal activity and disorderly conduct. However, Freaknik's reputation for violence and chaos resulted in an official ban in 2010. While some compare Orange Crush to the modern-day Freaknik, the event's future is questionable due to worries about public safety and community effect. Despite the weekend's disturbances, Tybee Island Police Chief Tiffany Hayes called the event a "success," citing the backing of local stakeholders. (With inputs from agencies)
