On Friday, the state of New York passed two legislations to shield kids from social media content that is too addicting and to safeguard their privacy. These rules aim to restrict the amount of time kids spend on computer-generated algorithmic social media feeds.

The Stop Addictive Feeds Exploitation (Safe) for Kids Act forbids social media companies from notifying minors between the hours of 12 and 6 AM about addictive feeds and mandates that they limit access to addictive feeds on their platforms for users under the age of 18.

The second regulation, the New York Child Data Protection Act, forbids internet companies from gathering, using, disclosing, or selling any personal information of people under the age of eighteen unless they have permission in writing or unless it's essential to the operation of the website.

The law permits the state attorney general to fine a person up to $5,000 for each infraction.

Governor Kathy Hochul described the legislation as a "historic step forward in our efforts to address the youth mental health crisis and create a safer digital environment for young people."

He further said, "New York is leading the nation to protect our kids from addictive social media feeds and shield their personal data from predatory companies."

The teachers union also welcomed the decision. Melinda Person, president of the New York State Teachers' Union, in a statement said, "Educators see the harmful effects of social media on our kids every day, and this legislation is a tremendous first step toward ensuring these influences remain in their proper places," stated Melinda Person, president of the New York State Teachers' Union, in a statement.

The Safe for Kids Act defines addictive feeds as those that are based on a user’s “liked” or “followed” content or other actions that the user may not be aware of, such as how long they look at a particular piece of media.

These feeds “make predictions about interests, mood, and other factors related to what is most likely to keep users engaged for as long as possible, creating a feed tailor-made to keep each user on the platform for longer periods”, the law states.

“Since their adoption, addictive feeds have had a dramatic negative effect on children and teenagers, causing young users to spend more time on social media than they otherwise would, which has been tied to significantly higher rates of youth depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and self-harm.”

Similar laws shielding kids from social media use have been drafted throughout the United States based on the common perception that social media use is raising the incidence of mental illness in kids.

Parental consent laws are being created or updated in Connecticut, Vermont, Illinois, New Mexico, Maryland, and Minnesota. Some of these laws require online platforms to carry out safety assessments for children, modify their designs to help children avoid harmful content, and restrict who can contact minors.

Alleging that Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, breached children's privacy, 33 states filed a lawsuit against it last year.

New York enacts landmark laws to protect children from social media addiction

Wyoming's Mountain Pass roadway will be blocked permanently after a large portion of it fell in a "catastrophic" landslide on Sunday (June 8), officials said.

Photos and videos show the Teton Pass road, a major commuting route between eastern Idaho villages and the famous tourist destination of Jackson, Wyoming, with a huge stretch of pavement missing as a result of the collapse. After the incident happened, the road was closed.

The failing stretch was first closed on Thursday due to a dangerous driving situation caused by a crack and a dip in the road. The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) posted on social media that evening after a team temporarily fixed the area and allowed traffic to move forward.

"WYDOT crews, along with contract crews from Evans Construction, were working in the area to construct a detour around the damage, but the landslide continued to move, taking out the whole road," said the agency.

"No crews were hurt in the process, and no equipment was damaged. WYDOT is now reviewing a long-term solution and repairs, and more information on planning efforts will be available soon," the department added.

According to the government, the mudslide that occurred at milepost 15 "breached the roadway with mud and debris, overwhelming the channeled drainage ditch and culvert."

To facilitate the state's access to additional funding from the Federal Highway Administration to start repair work, Governor Mark Gordon's office signed an executive order declaring an emergency.

According to a Facebook statement, Gordon met with representatives from the Wyoming Office of Homeland Security and WYDOT to plan a response to the "catastrophic landslide."

"I am grateful for the efforts of WYDOT staff to protect public safety during this developing situation, and am thankful no one was injured during this incident," Gordon stated.

Hunter Biden used crack cocaine shortly after unlawfully purchasing a pistol in 2018, according to information presented during his criminal trial. Days after the handgun purchase, Biden, 54, texted his brother's widow, saying in one message that he was "sleeping on a car smoking crack," an FBI agent testifying during his trial claimed. The son of the US president is charged with purposefully lying on paperwork regarding his drug usage to purchase a handgun and ammo from a Wilmington, Delaware gun store. According to his defence, he was sincere when he stated on the paperwork that he wasn't using illegal substances at the time he purchased the firearm because he was in recovery. If convicted guilty of all three federal charges in the case, Biden could spend up to 25 years in jail. FBI agent Erika Jensen stated in her testimony on Tuesday that there was "evidence of addiction" on the laptop. She added that in the months before he purchased the pistol, Biden seemed to be making plans to obtain illegal substances. He used code for crack cocaine like "baby powder" in the text exchanges. He texted Hallie Biden, the late president's son Beau Biden's wife, the day after the gun purchase, saying he was "waiting for a dealer named Mookie." Hallie Biden texted him that day, saying, "I called you 500 times in the past 24 hours." In response, Hunter Biden said he was "sleeping on a car smoking crack on 4th street and Rodney" less than a minute later. Also read: I forgive the attacker: Slovak PM's first address since assassination attempt In a separate text, he said, "There's my truth." During her brief connection with Mr. Biden following her husband Beau's death in 2015, Hallie Biden also developed a crack cocaine addiction, which will be discussed with the jury in the trial. Biden's attorneys described the messages, implying that their client had lied to avoid meeting Hallie Biden. The laptop that was the focus of the testimony was leaked with inappropriate images of Hunter Biden and texts about his financial dealings, which turned it into a political mine during the 2020 election campaign. Although Joe Biden insisted at the time that the information was false Russian propaganda, the laptop has since been verified as authentic. (With inputs from agencies)

Melania Trump, son Barron make first public appearance post-trial verdict

Former chief medical adviser to President Joe Biden and as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Dr Anthony Fauci was grilled Monday (Jun 3) as he testified before a Republican-led House panel investigating the origins of COVID-19 and the government's pandemic response. During the testimony, an intense bipartisan divide was on display as Republicans on the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic committee hounded him while Democrats came to his rescue.

The hearing comes as several Republicans have alleged that he had been communicating about official work using his private accounts.

It was Fauci's first public appearance on Capitol Hill since leaving government in 2022.

What happened in the hearing?

The committee chairman, Rep. Brad Wenstrup of Ohio, started off with a thanking note, lauding Fauci's "willing cooperation," for his voluntary appearance in the hearing.

But he was quick to give Fauci a tough time with his questions as he claimed he allowed his office to be "unaccountable to the American people."

In a shocking development, the aunt of ex-Democratic Hawaiian Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard was found murdered in a Samoa home last month. 78-year-old Caroline Sinaviana-Gabbard was stabbed multiple times and beaten to death by a hammer during a fight with her protégé Papalii Sia Figiel on May 25. The incident took place at Figiel's house at a time when the two women were alone. It is believed that Caroline had been a mentor to the Samoa-based award-winning author.

Following the gruesome murder, Figiel reportedly fled to a friend's house and later surrendered before police. Police have charged her with murder following a preliminary investigation.

Local media quoted Samoa Police Commissioner Auapaau Logoitino Filipo as saying, "A hammer is alleged to have been used as well as a small knife that inflicted multiple stab wounds on the deceased.”

It was not clear what caused the fatal fight between the two women.

“We do not know what the motive is of the offending but from reports the incident occurred on Saturday and the suspect left the deceased at her home while she went out to Lotofaga and spent time with a friend,” Filipo added.

Who was Caroline Sinaviana-Gabbard?

For almost twenty years, Sinavaiana-Gabbard served as a creative writing and Pacific literature instructor at the school.

According to her family, she was a skilled writer, educator, and environmental activist, and she was the first Samoan to hold a full professorship in the United States.

She was the older sister of Hawaii State Senator Mike Gabbard, Tulsi’s father.

Local media quoted Samoa Police Commissioner Auapaau Logoitino Filipo as saying, "A hammer is alleged to have been used as well as a small knife that inflicted multiple stab wounds on the deceased.” It was not clear what caused the fatal fight between the two women. She got me hooked on reading, so much so that I followed in her footsteps and majored in English at Sonoma State University in California, then returned to our birthplace, American Samoa, where I taught English in high schools and was a faculty member, guidance counsellor and dean at the community college for many years," he added. Donald Trump, the former president, announced on Saturday night that he had joined TikTok in the wake of reports that the value of his Truth Social shares had dropped by $314 million.

On his verified account, @realDonaldTrump, Trump shared a video announcing his launch that showed him greeting spectators at the Ultimate Fighting Championship bout he watched on Saturday in Newark, New Jersey.

In the 13-second video, UFC President Dana White said, "The president is now on TikTok." "It's my honor," Trump replied. In around four hours, the video had received over 2.7 million views and over half a million likes.

Trump's decision to join TikTok was prompted by the Trump Media & Technology Group Corp. (TMTG)'s share price plummeting on Friday following his conviction on Thursday for criminal offences. TMTG, the owner of the social media platform Truth Social, is led by the former president, who is also the company's majority shareholder.

He was found guilty of all 34 charges by a New York jury in connection with an unlawful conspiracy to sway the 2016 election by paying hush money to a porn star who claimed to have had sex with him.

Despite the controversies surrounding TikTok, the fact that Trump, the presumed Republican nominee, joined the platform a few months after President Joe Biden's campaign indicates that both camps see it as a potent messaging tool to reach voters before November's election.

President Joe Biden signed legislation in April requiring ByteDance, TikTok's Chinese parent company to sell the app within a year or risk a ban in the United States.

Those attempting to ban TikTok claim that its ownership by ByteDance provides Beijing serious influence over what Americans watch and may give it access to U.S. user data. ByteDance has made it clear time and time again that the Chinese government does not own or control the company.

When he was president, Trump attempted to ban TikTok by an executive order due to national security concerns, but he has since said that he is against the idea. "Just so everyone knows, especially the young people, Crooked Joe Biden is responsible for banning TikTok," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform in April.

"He is the one pushing it to close, and doing it to help his friends over at Facebook become richer and more dominant, and able to continue to fight, perhaps illegally, the Republican Party," he added.

The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) said a Chinese national was arrested in an international operation on charges of creating and using malware that was used in cyber attacks, large-scale fraud and child exploitation.

Singapore's Straits Times newspaper reported on Thursday that the man, 35-year-old Wang Yunhe, was arrested in the city-state on May 24.

Wang's arrest follows last August's high-profile sweep of 10 Chinese citizens holding multiple nationalities charged with laundering more than $2 billion through the Asian financial hub.

The Department of Justice said in a statement dated May 29 that Wang and unnamed others allegedly "created and disseminated malware to compromise and amass a network of millions of residential Windows computers worldwide".

From 2018 until July 2022, Wang received $99 million from sales of the hijacked proxied IP addresses either in cryptocurrency or fiat currency, the DOJ said.

It said cybercriminals who bought access to the infected IP addresses then bypassed financial fraud detection systems and stole "billions of dollars from financial institutions, credit card issuers, and federal lending programmes".

This includes fraudulent loss exceeding $5.9 billion from 560,000 fraudulent unemployment insurance claims originating from compromised IP addresses, said the DOJ.

"Wang used the illicitly gained proceeds to purchase real property in the United States, St. Kitts and Nevis, China, Singapore, Thailand, and the United Arab Emirates," the DOJ statement said.

It said Wang's assets and properties included sports cars, more than a dozen domestic and international bank accounts, over two dozen cryptocurrency wallets, luxury watches and 21 properties across several countries.

Matthew S. Axelrod, assistant secretary for export enforcement at the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security, said the case read like a screenplay.

"A scheme to sell access to millions of malware-infected computers worldwide, enabling criminals over the world to steal billions of dollars, transmit bomb threats, and exchange child exploitation materials—then using the scheme’s nearly $100 million in profits to buy luxury cars, watches, and real estate," said Axelrod.
DOJ said the operation was a multiagency effort led by law enforcement in the U.S., Singapore, Thailand, and Germany.

Conservative activists claim President Biden was dozing off during Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin's speech in a video that appeared to show him closing his eyes for a long time during a Memorial Day ceremony on Monday. The video has received a lot of attention on social media.

As part of the yearly act of respect, Biden observed Memorial Day on Monday by laying a wreath near the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery.

Prior to their anticipated rematch for the presidency in November, the 77-year-old Donald Trump has made a point of criticising Joe Biden's 81-year-old cognitive abilities, calling him "sleepy Joe."

Though he vehemently disputed this on his Truth Social website, the presumed Republican presidential nominee has been accused of nodding off during his current hush money trial in Manhattan.

Relations between Saudi Arabia and the US are expected to improve as the latter is mulling lifting the ban on selling offensive weapons to the kingdom state in coming weeks, Financial Times has reported citing US officials. US President Joe Biden had introduced these restrictions three years ago shortly after entering the White House, in line with his long-held vow to make Saudi Arabia a 'pariah' state. Biden had promised to punish Saudi Arabia and its de-facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for the alleged use of US-made weapons in attacks against Yemen civilians.

Saudi Arabia had entered the Yemen conflict nine years ago in a bid to oust the Iran-backed Houthi group but largely remained unsuccessful. In 2022, the UN brokered a peace deal there and Riyadh has largely refrained from involving itself in the conflict since then.

In a major U-turn, Biden administration to lift arms embargo on Saudi Arabia: Report

A US woman was sentenced to more than 13 years in jail after she pleaded guilty to killing her 4-year-old daughter by overfeeding her with cold drink Mountain Dew.

Her daughter, Karmity Hoeb, passed away in January 2022 after developing fatal diabetes. At the time of her death, her teeth had also rotten away. The girl's father also pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and is set to be sentenced on June 11.

The girl was never given nutrition

The poor soul was neglected throughout her life and her parents never offered her medical care even after she exhibited glaring signs of complications.

The Ohio parents only called emergency services after the 4-year-old girl turned blue one day and stopped breathing. Medics examined her and declared her brain dead.

Doctors diagnosed her with diabetic ketoacidosis, which had spread to her brain.

The girl also developed a dental complication, which caused her teeth to dissolve. It was because she was given an almost exclusive diet of Mountain Dew from a baby bottle throughout her life.

The girl was never given nutrition The poor soul was neglected throughout her life and her parents never offered her medical care even after she exhibited glaring signs of complications. The Ohio parents only called emergency services after the 4-year-old girl turned blue one day and stopped breathing. Medics examined her and declared her brain dead. Doctors diagnosed her with diabetic ketoacidosis, which had spread to her brain. It was because she was given an almost exclusive diet of Mountain Dew from a baby bottle throughout her life. Prosecutors said she should have long been weaned off bottles. US woman killed daughter by exclusively feeding her Mountain Dew, jailed

Speaker of the US House Mike Johnson said on Thursday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will address a joint session of Congress "soon." Speaker of the US House Mike Johnson said on Thursday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will address a joint session of Congress "soon." Speaking at the annual Independence Day celebration held by the Israeli Embassy in Washington, Johnson stated, "This will be a timely and a very strong show of support to the Israeli government in their time of greatest need." Johnson did not specify when Netanyahu's address will take place, but he told reporters on the sidelines of the event that US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer had informed him that he would approve the invitation. It is unclear if Netanyahu will accept the invitation even if it is formally extended. Cast from the past: Netanyahu’s last joint session address in 2015 In 2015, Netanyahu gave his last joint session address, which was arranged by Republican Congressional leaders during Obama administration. Nearly 60 Democrats did not attend his address. Given that progressives are growing more and more opposed to Israel's battle in Gaza against Hamas, a far greater number of Democrats may abstain from a Netanyahu address this time. To go or not to go? Senator Bernie Sanders on CNN said, “It’s a terrible idea. No, I won’t go. You have a prime minister who has created the worst humanitarian disaster in modern history.” "Israel certainly has the right to protection from a terrorist attack by Hamas, but Netanyahu has launched a war against the entire Palestinian people, against women and children. 5% of the population of the Gaza Strip were killed or injured, 60% of them were women and children. 200,000 residential buildings were completely destroyed. How can one invite someone who has acted so badly towards the Palestinians? I think this is a very bad idea," he added. Also read: Bodies of three more Oct 7 hostages recovered overnight from Gaza The top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, Jim Himes told Axios that the address "would be an enormously controversial, divisive thing." You should "expect something similar" to the boycott of 2015, Progressive Caucus Chair Pramila Jayapal told Axios. "There certainly will be something... there's a conversation about what it should be and what it looks like." "A lot" of Democrats, according to Representative Ro Khanna, may miss the speech, maybe more than in 2015 "given what's going on" in Gaza. How have US-Israel relations changed since the start of the Israel-Hamas conflict? The conflict caused by Hamas' attack on October 7 has also strained Netanyahu's relationship with US President Joe Biden, who warned Israel for the first time earlier this month to withhold arms if it launched a large attack in Rafah's civilian regions. While Netanyahu looks to have secured an invitation from Congress, he has yet to get one from the White House, and traveling to Washington without one would just underscore the differences. If he accepts the invitation, Netanyahu would be the first foreign leader in history to speak before Congress's joint sessions four times. Winston Churchill, former prime minister of Britain, and he are now tied at three. Netanyahu's woes Tens of thousands of demonstrators, some of whose relatives are among the 128 hostages who are still being held in Gaza, have demanded new polls, placing Netanyahu under political duress in Israel. Since the start of the conflict, his popularity has sharply declined. (With inputs from agencies)
