Virginia was one of the first 13 colonies and the birthplace of four of the first five US presidents. Notably, the state shares a border with the US capital, Washington, DC.

Virginia had almost always sided with the Democratic Party but began being seen as a competitive battleground state in the 1990s due to the rapid population growth and shifting demographics around Washington, DC.

Between 1952 and 2004, Virginia witnessed a rise in support for Republicans and it wasn’t until 2008 that the Democrats emerged victorious in the state.

SCOTUS rules in favour of Virginia’s voter roll purge

On Wednesday (Oct 30), the US Supreme Court backed Virginia's decision to purge its voter rolls of 1,600 people who state officials concluded were not American citizens.

While it is illegal for non-citizens to vote in US federal elections, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, a Republican, introduced a new policy earlier this year to rid the state’s official voter registration list of people “unable to verify that they are citizens,” with daily data sharing among state agencies.

However, President Joe Biden’s administration and rights groups have argued that the list also included actual citizens whose names are now struck.

The Virginia governor was sued for his order by the US justice department and civil rights groups said that the state was violating federal law, which prohibits systematic removals of voters within 90 days of a federal election.

The SCOTUS’ 6-3 conservative majority ruled in favour of Youngkin’s policy, while three liberal justices dissented.

The Democratic incumbent was re-elected after securing 54.1 per cent of the votes. Kaine was first elected to the seat in 2012 (53 per cent - 47 per cent) and re-elected in 2018 (57 per cent - 41 per cent).

President Elect Donald Trump Warns Putin Against Escalating War On Ukraine

US President-elect Donald Trump announced that his former acting US Immigration and Customs Enforcement director, Tom Homan, will serve as "border czar" in his upcoming administration.

Homan, who has backed Trump's controversial "zero tolerance" policy, will be his administration's border czar during the US President-elect's second term.

"I am pleased to announce that the Former ICE Director, and stalwart on Border Control, Tom Homan, will be joining the Trump Administration, in charge of our Nation's Borders," Trump wrote late Sunday on his Truth Social site.

Trump further said that Homan's responsibilities would include “the Southern Border, the Northern Border, all Maritime, and Aviation Security.”

He added, "I’ve known Tom for a long time, and there is nobody better at policing and controlling our Borders. Likewise, Tom Homan will be in charge of all Deportation of Illegal Aliens back to their Country of Origin. Congratulations to Tom. I have no doubt he will do a fantastic, and long-awaited, job.”

The term 'border czar' comes after Trump and other Republicans derisively applied that description to US Vice President Kamala Harris during the campaign, alleging that he failed in her efforts to oversee a portfolio addressing the root causes of migration from Central America.

Trump's Day 1 agenda likely includes a focus on cracking down on immigration, and by appointing Homan, he is placing a steady ally who has always shown a will to carry out his orders.

Previously, Homan has promised to "run the biggest deportation force this country has ever seen.”

Donald Trump announces Tom Homan as 'border czar' to handle 'deportation of illegal aliens'

Vivek Ramaswamy, the former Republican presidential contender turned aide to President-elect Donald Trump has voiced strong support for Trump's proposed mass deportation of undocumented immigrants.

The Indian-American entrepreneur emphasising the need to enforce immigration laws to restore order said that the United States' legal immigration system was “broken”.

A 'broken' system

In an interview with ABC News, Ramaswamy argued that those who entered the US illegally, particularly in recent years, do not have the right to remain.

“Do we have a broken legal immigration system? Yes, we do. But I think the first step is going to be to restore the rule of law, to do it in a very pragmatic way,” said Ramaswamy.

“Those who have committed a crime should be out of this country. That is by the millions. That alone would be the largest mass deportation. Combine that with ending government aid for all illegals. You see self-deportations,” he added.

Trump and Ramaswamy

Once a rival in the Republican primaries, Ramaswamy has emerged as a close ally to Trump. He told ABC News that he was having “high impact” discussions about his future role within the Trump administration.

"There's a couple great options on the table. I want to have the biggest possible impact on this country. We're not going to sort that out in the press… we're having some high-impact discussions."

Speaking of Trump’s victory, Ramaswamy said, “I think he cares about uniting the country. I think that is Donald Trump's number one focus,” he said.

“He's also learned a lot from that first term, and I think he's going into this second term even to take to new heights some of the things he wasn't able to accomplish in the first term, which I think is going to be a good thing,”

He said that Trump’s focus on challenging the “deep state” has struck a chord across a broad base.

“Here's a big one. And Donald Trump talked for a long time about the deep state. But this idea of restoring self-governance is big in this new coalition. The idea that the people we elect to run the government, they haven't been the ones actually running the government for a very long time.”

“Donald Trump is going to be the president of the United States in the real sense of that word. Capital P president where he is actually making the decisions with the democratic will of the people behind him, not the unelected bureaucratic class underneath him,” he added.

He urged even Trump’s critics to give him a chance, asserting that many would be “pleasantly surprised” by positive changes under the administration.

“A lot of people across the country, even those who have bought into some false narratives about Donald Trump, are going to be pleasantly surprised to find more money in their paychecks, prices coming down in the country, and a secure border. Those are things most Americans actually care about.”

A 'broken' system In an interview with ABC News, Ramaswamy argued that those who entered the US illegally, particularly in recent years, do not have the right to remain. “Do we have a broken legal immigration system? Yes, we do. But I think the first step is going to be to restore the rule of law, to do it in a very pragmatic way,” said Ramaswamy. US President-elect Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin recently engaged in their first post-election call, according to reports.

According to a Washington Post report citing sources familiar with the conversation, on Thursday (Nov 7), the two leaders discussed the war in Ukraine and also touched on the goal of achieving peace in Europe.

However, the Kremlin has denied the report. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told journalists that the Washington Post report was “simply false information”.

Reportedly, the call, conducted from Trump’s Florida resort, saw the Republican warn Russian President Putin against escalating the conflict while reminding him of “Washington's sizeable military presence in Europe”.

Trump reportedly voiced interest in further talks to discuss “the resolution of Ukraine’s war soon”, echoing his campaign pledge to end the conflict quickly.

While Trump has yet to clarify specific steps towards achieving this, the leader, known for his transactional approach to foreign policy, has privately suggested he might support a peace settlement involving concessions from Ukraine.

World leaders calling Trump directly

Since his election win on Nov 7, Trump said he has already talked to over 70 world leaders. However, as per the report, contrary to the protocol, he is conducting these calls independently. The Trump transition team is yet to sign an agreement with the General Services Administration — a standard procedure for presidential transitions — and has refrained from engaging the State Department for these conversations.

This is because distrust of career officials, especially after transcripts of calls from his previous term were leaked, has led Trump's team to bypass standard protocols. Instead, world leaders are “just calling [Trump] directly,” noted a person familiar with the calls.

Trump has also spoken with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, a call reportedly joined by Elon Musk. While the tone was friendly, Ukrainian officials have expressed concern about Trump’s intentions regarding continued support for Kyiv. Trump has been vocal about the burden of US funding for Kyiv, suggesting that peace may come with difficult compromises — like Ukraine giving up some of its territory such as Crimea to Russia.

Kremlin denies reports of Trump-Putin call, warning against escalating Ukraine war

US President-elect Donald Trump on Sunday (Nov 10) demanded that Republican senators allow him to bypass the Senate confirmation process for key appointments. This, as per reports, aims to sidestep Democratic opposition and maintain momentum for his administration.

Trump made the demand on social media platform X (previously known as Twitter), stressing that any Republican senator vying for leadership must support the use of recess appointments to confirm his nominations without a Senate vote.

Under the US Constitution, the Senate typically holds the power to approve presidential appointments for senior positions, such as cabinet roles and judicial appointments. However, a provision allows presidents to bypass this process if the Senate is in an extended recess.

Historically, the Senate has used various tactics to avoid prolonged recesses to protect its influence over such nominations, reports AFP.

He argued that “Any Republican Senator seeking the coveted LEADERSHIP position in the United States Senate must agree to Recess Appointments (in the Senate!), without which we will not be able to get people confirmed in a timely manner.”

Peace prize for Trump? Italy's deputy PM floats Nobel for US president-elect if he ends Ukraine war

The United States Justice Department Friday (Nov 8) made charges public in a case regarding a thwarted attempt by Iran to kill Donald Trump, the winner of the 2024 US presidential elections, back in September.

According to an official complaint filed at Manhattan federal court, an agent in the US was allegedly instructed by an Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard official to hatch a plan to kill the Republican leader, earlier this year.

The man has been identified as Farjad Shakeri. He was allegedly ordered by the Iranian official that if he fails to formulate a plan to kill Trump by September, they would have to delay it until the elections happen.

Shakeri reportedly told US federal investigative agency FBI that Iran anticipated Trump would lose the elections, which would make it easier for the Shi’ite nation to assassinate the GOP leader.

The plot was uncovered after the US Justice Department unsealed the court documents related to it days after Trump defeated Democratic rival Kamala Harris in polls marred by foreign interference, especially by nations like Russia, Iran, and China.

A Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) official has been suspended after ordering disaster relief workers to avoid helping the houses having a Trump sign, Fox News reported.

A Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) official has been suspended after ordering disaster relief workers to avoid helping the houses having a Trump sign, Fox News reported. After the devastating hurricane in Florida, relief workers were deployed in the affected areas but the official directed them to not help the homes "advertising" for the US President-elect Donald Trump. In a statement to Fox News, a FEMA spokesperson said the organisation is "deeply disturbed" after the incident confirming that the official directing the workers was given no instruction from the agency to avoid those houses. "While we believe this is an isolated incident, we have taken measures to remove the employee from their role and are investigating the matter to prevent this from happening ever again," the spokesperson told Fox News. "The employee who issued this guidance had no authority and was given no direction to tell teams to avoid these homes, and we are reaching out to the people who may have not been reached as a result of this incident," he added. Pentagon officials brace for 'illegal' orders from Donald Trump: Report

The United States (US) has charged an Iranian man in an alleged assassination attempt on President-elect Donald Trump. US prosecutors announced on Friday (Nov 8) that the foiled assassination plot on Trump was allegedly directed by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to avenge the death of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani.

Soleimani was killed in 2020 in a US strike ordered by then-president Trump, the Justice Department said according to Reuters. The 51-year-old Farhad Shakeri, an Afghan national who is believed to be in Iran, was "tasked" by the IRGC with providing a plan to kill Trump, who defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the November 5 US presidential election, the department said in a statement. Also read | Trump wants trade war veteran Robert Lighthizer to run US trade policy: Report Shakeri and two other men, Carlisle Rivera, 49, and Jonathon Loadholt, 36, both from New York, were charged separately with plotting to kill an Iranian-American dissident in New York. Rivera and Loadholt are in US custody and made a court appearance in New York on Thursday. "The charges announced today expose Iran's continued brazen attempts to target US citizens, including President-elect Donald Trump, other government leaders and dissidents who criticize the regime in Tehran," FBI Director Christopher Wray said. Trump faced two other separate assassination attempts this year, including a shooting at a campaign rally when a bullet grazed his ear. On Friday, the Justice Department described Shakeri as an "IRGC asset residing in Tehran." Shakeri told the FBI he was approached by an IRGC official in September about organising the assassination of Trump. He allegedly told the IRGC official it would cost a "huge" amount of money, to which the official responded: "Money's not an issue." (With inputs from agencies)

The Federal Reserve delivered a quarter-point interest-rate cut on thursday — the second-straight reduction as widely expected. As Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump clinched a historic victory in the US presidential elections, the global financial markets were rattled and left many investors in a tizzy.

Before weighing the implications of this economic shake-up, let's first understand the impact of Trump's victory on market indexes, currencies and commodities.

How global markets reacted to Trump's victory?

As soon as the results were out, the US shares jumped to a record high on Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average rallied nearly 4 per cent, the S&P opened 2 per cent higher and amid this market euphoria, the dollar recorded its biggest jump in eight years.

Some of the stocks saw a surge in price, especially Elon Musk's owned Tesla and Trump Media. Musk remained a staunch supporter of Trump throughout the election campaign and has a high chance of holding a position in the government.

Even though Tesla shares rallied on the market, stocks of other electric automakers went into a slump because of Trump's decision to consider putting an end to a $7,500 tax credit for EV purchases on coming to power.

The small-cap stocks also performed well, as the Russell 2000 index jumped to around 5 per cent, which was its largest rise in one day in two years. Bank stocks also joined the celebrations as they soared in the market.

In the world of cryptocurrency, bitcoin recorded a historic all-time high because of Trump's position to prioritise the volatile cryptocurrency.

Predicting the global market's future in Trump 2.0, Samir Bahl, CEO - Investment Banking, Anand Rathi Advisors, said to WION, "Investors can be optimistic that a pro-business administration can lead to favourable market conditions and potentially promising returns in the medium term. This administration is also likely to seek decisive settlements to ongoing global conflicts currently impacting global supply chains and market sentiments."

The global markets also remained impacted by the import duties, which included a 60 per cent tariff on imports from China and a 10 per cent universal tariff on imports from all foreign countries.

The victory of Trump initially triggered a sell-off because of which oil fell by more than $2, however, it turned positive later in the day. According to predictions of Citi, Trump's second term is likely to exert pressure on oil in 2025 and Brent crude is likely to remain at an average of $60 per barrel, because of increased oil supply and potential trade tariffs.

However, speaking to WION, Siddharth Maurya, Founder & Managing Director of Vibhavangal Anukulakara Private Limited, said that election results' "immediate effect would be felt in the case of fossil fuels, infrastructure and domestic manufacturing. Even though there are very high expectations from the presidential policies, it has been established that core drivers of returns would be the Fed policies and the global economy."

The see-saw between US elections and the Indian stock market

The euphoria of Trump's victory was also reflected in the Indian stock market, which rallied through the day and closed in green. Nifty rose to 24,484.05 and the benchmark BSE Sensex closed at 80,378.13, which marked a 901.50 point, or 1.13 per cent jump from the previous day.

However, the excitement fizzled out in the stock market the next day as investors tried to weigh both the positive and negative implications of the Republicans being at the helm of US politics on the Indian market.

Speaking about the implications of Trump's victory on the Indian market, Maurya said, "The positives could be the strengthening of bilateral relations, Indian IT companies benefitting if US corporates increase spending or US companies increasing the pace at which they move their supply chains from China towards India. There could be some uneasy situations as well because of limitations on immigration policies that impact the provision of IT services, trade restrictions, and world market instability on account of US-China relations."

The Indian rupee also witnessed an all-time low of 84.3775 amid outflows from local equities and expectations that the change in regime would boost the dollar.

So what lies ahead for the Indian market? "The Indian equities market can expect to continue its strong performance after the long overdue correction. While there could be some pressure on India-US trade negotiations, under the Trump administration, U.S.-China tensions could further accelerate the China + 1 policy driving both investors and companies to shift their focus toward India as an attractive alternative market," Bahl explained.

"Nonetheless, investors must remain cognizant of policy impacts on international trade, especially with China, and expected market fluctuations arising from geopolitical choices," Maurya warned.

However, the policies of Trump are likely to catalyse a robust cycle of investment and development in the country's tech and real estate landscapes.

Emphasising how Trump 2.0 will impact real estate, Samir Bhandari, Co-founder & CFO, hBits - a fractional ownership platform of commercial real estate, said to WION, "As U.S. firms ramp up spending in response to a favourable economic environment, Indian IT companies are likely to benefit from increased demand for services, driving expansion in Global Capability Centres. This growth will not only enhance job creation but also stimulate the commercial real estate sector in tech hubs like Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai."
