U.S-China relationship puts a lot at stake for the world’, says expert at Summer Davos in China

US House Foreign Affairs Committee chairperson Michael McCaul on Tuesday (Dec 17) claimed that the unidentified drones recently spotted over New Jersey and New York are "spy drones" from China.
McCaul's claim comes after the Biden administration downplayed the sightings as largely commercial in nature.

McCaul, the House representative for Texas's 10th congressional district shared his suspicions after meeting with NASA Administrator Bill Nelson who noted drone activity over military bases, New York Post said in a report.  
"We want answers, but the response I’m getting is we don't know whose drones these are," said McCaul, adding, "I would not think those are friendly. I would think those are adversarial."

"We need to identify who is behind these drones," he stressed.
"My judgment based on my experience is that those that are over our military sites are adversarial and most likely are coming from the People’s Republic of China," McCaul said, citing China's track record of espionage.
"I believe they’re spy drones and the PRC and communist China is very good at this stuff," he alleged.
He criticised the government for its lack of clear answers, calling the situation "very disturbing."
"We're not getting answers and I think it’s because our government does not know who is behind them and that is very disturbing to me," he stated.

<h2>Drone sightings in east US spark public concern</h2>
The drones have been observed in sensitive locations, including New Jersey's Picatinny Arsenal, Naval Weapons Station Earle, and Stewart International Airport in New York, which was temporarily forced to close on Sunday (Dec 15)  due to an unidentified aircraft.  
Federal agencies, including the FBI, FAA, Pentagon, and Department of Homeland Security, issued a joint statement Monday (Dec 16) in which they attributed the sightings to "a combination of lawful commercial drones, hobbyist drones, and law enforcement drones, as well as manned fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and stars mistakenly reported as drones".  
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas supported this view while White House spokesperson John Kirby reported that authorities "have not been able to, and neither have state and local law enforcement authorities, corroborate any of the reported visual sightings".

Reuters reports that Kerry's visit to China, which is aimed at reviving climate cooperation, coincided with extreme weather events worldwide, including record-breaking temperatures in the western United States.

During a meeting at China's legislative building, the Great Hall of the People, Kerry expressed hope that the talks would mark the beginning of a new phase of cooperation and resolution of differences between the two countries.

He reportedly highlighted the seriousness of the situation, mentioning a record high temperature of 52.2 degrees Celsius recorded in China's Xinjiang region.

Li, as per China's official Xinhua news agency, urged rich nations to "take the lead" in cutting emissions and fulfilling their commitments to provide climate financing to developing countries.

As per the news agency, speaking at a press conference later, Chinese President Xi Jinping too reiterated China's "unwavering" commitment to tackling climate change.

"But the route, method and intensity used to achieve this goal should and must be determined by ourselves, and will never be influenced by others," he said.

During his meeting with top diplomat Wang Yi, Kerry emphasised that the talks could provide a fresh start for US-China relations, which have been strained due to disputes over Taiwan and trade.

He also conveyed to Chinese President Xi Jinping a message from US President Joe Biden, expressing how much the leader "values his relationship" with his Chinese counterpart.

US anti-submarine aircraft approaches within 100 km of China's Shanghai

China's foreign ministry said on Monday that it has "decided to impose visa restrictions against American individuals who have behaved egregiously on matters concerning Hong Kong."

The move comes after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo imposed visa restrictions on Chinese officials over infringement of Hong Kong autonomy.

"The US scheme to obstruct the passage of the Hong Kong national security law will never prevail," Foreign Ministry&nbsp;spokesman Zhao Lijian asserted. China had said last week that "no one has any legal grounds or right to make irresponsible comments on Hong Kong affairs" as the Trump administration moved to restrict visas against Chinese officials.

China is set to pass the Hong Kong security law after the law-making committee discussed the bill on Sunday. Hong Kong has been at the epicentre of pro-democracy protests since last year. Protesters have demanded greater autonomy from the local government even as China has moved ahead with the new security law.

The EU backing the US move had said that China would face "very negative consequences" if it passed the national security bill.

The Chinese committee, however, is set to adopt the security law within days, reports said. China had earlier announced the draft of the national security law which would effectively bypass Hong Kong's legislature to tackle "terrorism" and "separatism".

Meanwhile, Hong Kong police banned demonstrations against the national security law amid the coronavirus pandemic.&nbsp;

Pacific Island countries that have diplomatic ties with Taiwan should maintain them in the face of "heavy-handed" attempts by China to reduce Taiwan`s overseas contacts, a top US&nbsp;official said on Friday.

US Acting Assistant Secretary for Southeast Asia W. Patrick Murphy also said the United States was keen to help Pacific countries protect their sovereignty, in a region where the United States and is allies are competing for influence with China.

"Our encouragement on countries that have relations with Taiwan is to maintain the status quo," Murphy told reporters in Canberra, on a three-day visit to Australia.

China claims self-ruled and democratic Taiwan as sacred Chinese territory and merely a province with no right to state-to-state ties.&nbsp;

Taiwan is one of a growing number of flashpoints in the US-China relationship, which include a trade war, US sanctions and China`s increasingly muscular military posture in the South China Sea.

"China is changing (the) status quo, and the Pacific is a good example where China is attempting to reduce Taiwan’s diplomatic relations in the region," Murphy said.&nbsp; "And that`s kind of heavy-handed."&nbsp;

"Countries should be able to make their own independent choices of their partners in diplomatic relations, and do so on the basis of domestic ingredients, not foreign influence."

China has offered to help developing countries including in the Pacific, and many see Chinese lending as the best bet to develop their economies. But critics say Chinese loans can lead countries into a "debt trap".

Murphy said the United States was very keen to help countries "protect their sovereignty and their independence, to have viable alternatives and options to meet their development needs, their infrastructure needs, and their nation-building needs".

Taiwan has formal ties with just 17 countries, almost all small, less developed nations in Central America and the Pacific, like Belize and Nauru.&nbsp;

Five countries have switched over to China since Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen took office in 2016. Others such as the Solomon Islands, where two-thirds of exports go to China, are weighing the merits of diplomatic relations with Taiwan.&nbsp;

Although Pacific Island states offer little economically to either China and Taiwan, their support is valued in global forums such as the United Nations and as China seeks to isolate Taiwan.
