The move from the Department of Homeland Security came on Monday, hours after a judge overturned a December decree ordering the reinstatement of the so-called 'Remain in Mexico' policy introduced by President Joe Biden's predecessor Donald Trump.

The date of the policy's removal has been in question ever since the Supreme Court decided on June 30 that the Biden administration may stop the policy. Officials from DHS were quiet, claiming that they had to wait for the court to confirm the decision. The Supreme Court certified its ruling last week, AP reported.

According to a statement by DHS, the programme unwound quickly and systematically. There will no longer be any open applications, and those who show up in court won’t be sent back to Mexico when their next hearings are held in the US.

The rules (Migrant Protection Protocols) were in place from the time former President Donald Trump announced the "Remain in Mexico Policy" in January 2019 until Joe Biden cancelled the policy on his first day in office in January 2021.Critics attacked Trump’s approach by saying it exposes migrants to horrific violence in Mexico.

During the first few months of the Biden administration, many individuals were permitted to continue their cases. Almost 5,800 people were affected by the policy between December and June. The majority of people are from Cuba, Colombia, and Venezuela.

Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen <a href="https://english.president.gov.tw/NEWS/6295">remarked</a>, “We will work to maintain the peaceful and stable status quo in the Taiwan Strait. We are calm and will not act in haste. We are rational and will not act to provoke. But we will absolutely not back down.” Taiwan is showing resolve and is being transparent with swift dissemination of information but China is upping the ante in the Taiwan Strait.

China’s overreaction, symptomatic of its insecurities vis-à-vis Taiwan, is very much in continuation with its conventional response whenever there is a high-profile foreign visitor to Taiwan. China wants Taiwan to get sunk into oblivion, and deprive it of any international legitimacy.

Unfortunately for China, the COVID-19 pandemic gave Taiwan a rare opportunity to reach out to the global community and expand its international space amid China’s attempts to shrink former’s international space and poach diplomatic allies. This was a direct outcome of Tsai government’s refusal to accept the 1992 consensus to govern the cross-Strait ties that led China to suspend the cross-Strait dialogue.

While accusing Taiwan and the United States of altering the status quo through Pelosi’s visit, China conveniently forgets that in reality, it is China that has unilaterally violated the status quo in recent years. Its repeated encroachments into Taiwan’s Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) and attempts to persuade countries to not acknowledge and engage Taiwan are violations too.

&nbsp;So far as its strategic options are concerned, in spite of its heightened rhetoric and intimidation, it is a prevalent view in Taiwan that China is less likely to opt for a full-fledged military response.

What makes China’s choices difficult is the fact that this is a crucial time for China and it cannot afford to appear weak, both in front of the international community and the domestic audience. On August 2, marching of the tanks on <a href="https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/chinese-tanks-seen-rolling-packed-27638784">a beach in Xiamen</a> that is China’s closest point to Taiwan’s outlying island, Kinmen, when people were enjoying at the beach was to showcase the domestic audience that China views Pelosi’s visit as a violation of its sovereignty and if the need arises, will respond with military actions.

&nbsp;We are in a long haul here, and China’s intimidation might continue for months or even years. However, this is not something that Taiwan has not seen before. Taiwan has been living under the China threat for decades but the world is taking cognizance of it now.

Arguably, China’s retaliation against Taiwan is likely to be fivefold: spreading disinformation, launching cyberattacks, intensifying economic coercion, seeking reassurances and trying to shape the narrative in its favour, and further intensification in the naval and air incursions.

&nbsp;As Pelosi was landing, Chinese state media outlets launched a coordinated verbal attack on the social media apps and even spread disinformation that Su-35 fighter jets have crossed into Taiwan’s airspace. <a href="https://twitter.com/MoNDefense/status/1554503720817532928?s=20&amp;t=qs4_SuFY8fWPXqL3QuULIg">Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense</a> promptly dismissed such false stories by the Chinese state media. On the day of Pelosi’s arrival, several Taiwanese websites including the President Office and Ministry of Foreign Affairs were hit by ‘unknown’ overseas cyberattacks. On August 3, <a href="https://focustaiwan.tw/society/202208030026">the digital signage</a> of several convenience stores and government facilities in Taiwan was hacked and even displayed anti-Pelosi messages. China’s disinformation campaigns to create panic among Taiwanese and millions of cyberattacks originating from China have been a common problem that the Tsai Ing-wen government is grappling with.

&nbsp;A long-term response includes <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-08-03/china-halts-natural-sand-exports-to-taiwan-after-pelosi-visit-l6cv09k3">economic coercion</a>. China has already banned 100 Taiwanese food snacks manufacturers, imports of citrus fruits, and varieties of fish. China’s economic sanctions are only going to intensify as it is trying to hit Taiwan where it hurts the most given the cross-Strait economic interdependence.

&nbsp;China is also using this episode to seek reassurances from several countries on their adherences to the One-China Policy. Two of the first countries to come in support of China were Russia and North Korea. Additionally, the Chinese diplomats are hoping to shape the narrative of the people in the host countries through social media interactions and writing op-eds in the traditional media.

&nbsp;One of the most alarming responses is the further increase in military activities around Taiwan. With this, China aims to achieve three objectives: it wants to generate panic among people and intimidate Taiwan; it allows China to check Taiwan’s preparedness, the United States’ resolve to defend Taiwan, and even Japan’s response in an event of future cross-Strait conflict; and deter countries to expand interactions with Taiwan leading to Taiwan’s isolation.

&nbsp;These moves seem to be punitive measures, and are to deter the United States and Taiwan from improving semi-political exchanges and other countries to freely engage Taiwan. For now, China’s response seems to be a mix of military intimidation, verbal brinkmanship, and cutting off dialogues on key issues with the United States with a possibility of downgrading diplomatic contacts.

China’s actions will have long-term implications. While this increases anxiety and tensions in the Taiwan Strait, such miscalculations have the potential to create further problems for China. This is leading to further deterioration of relations with the United States, Japan, and other G7 countries with a possibility of the United States and Japan also getting involved in any future contingency.

&nbsp;It will dent China’s image and establish it as an aggressor. China has active territorial disputes with countries such as India, Japan, Southeast Asian nations. If China decides to escalate, it will harbour anxiety among countries that they might be next, and only bolster the resolve of countries to further strengthen a collective response to maintain the peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.

All eyes on Taiwan: What will China do?

Dozens of US racial and food activists recently accused the federal government of ‘dietary racism’ in its programme for free or reduced-price school lunches, claiming that the USDA is forcing millions of non-white lactose intolerant kids to drink cow’s milk. In a letter to the USDA’s Equity Commission, organisations have claimed that the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is unequal and socially unfair. The letter further stated that black, Native American, Asian, and Latino youngsters are being punished for their ethnicity and ancestry, as reported by The Hill.

In 100,000 schools across the US, the NSLP offers free or reduced lunches to nearly 30 million children. According to the National Centre for Education Statistics, over half of them are white; activist groups claim that non-white children are disproportionately dependent on these meals. Additionally, they claimed that non-white children are more likely to be lactose intolerant.

The organisations asserted that a signed doctor’s certificate may be necessary to provide a non-diary substitute and that the NSLP only reimburses schools if they give cow’s milk. However, the NSLP requirements are quite explicit that a non-diary can only be used with written authorisation from the kid’s parent or guardian. Alternatives to cow’s milk must meet USDA nutritional guidelines. Providing water is a mandated practise in the NSLP programme.

However, the protesters claimed that the government is pressuring the kids to consume cow’s milk.

The activist groups said that the posters on display are empty rhetoric because injustices are daily inflicted on millions of children unless the non-white children are properly provided for by the NSLP programme.

The father-son duo of Greg McMichael, 66, and Travis McMichael, 36, who chased and shot dead Black jogger Ahmaud Arbery have been given life sentences on Monday (August 9) for a federal hate crime.

The McMichaels, who are white, were found guilty of murder of Arbery after chasing him through a neighbourhood in Georgia. US district court judge Lisa Godbey Wood said the two had gone through a "fair trial" for the murder of 25-year-old Arbery. They are among the three defendants accused of the crime. Their neighbour, William "Roddie" Bryan, 52, received 35 years in jail for his involvement in the federal crime.

On February 23, 2020, the accused, holding firearms chased after Arbery, who was passing in front of their homes. Bryan also jumped into the chase and captured on camera how the duo shot Arbery. The duo, who had used a pickup van to go after Arbery, later informed the police they thought he was a thief. However, during the investigation, Arbery’s family said that he was on his routine jog, was unarmed, and had committed no offences.

Wood scheduled back-to-back hearings to sentence each defendant separately. Bryan apologised in court for what happened to the victim.

Arbery’s parents had previously spoken in court about their grief over losing their son and the damage caused by the racism involved in his murder. His mother said that she is very thankful for the decision made. Arbery’s father said that McMichaels killed his son because he was a Black man and people like him deserve no mercy.

The McMichaels requested the judge&nbsp;to transfer them from a state jail to a federal jail as they believed it would not be safe for them in the Georgia prison system. However, the judge denied the request of the three defendants to choose a federal jail. Arbery’s family said that a federal jail would not be harsh enough for the defendants.

Arbery’s murder formed a part of a larger national conversation about racial injustice and the deaths of Black individuals without cause, including Breonna Taylor in Kentucky and George Floyd in Minneapolis. The US Justice department also filed federal charges in these two cases.<o:p></o:p>

Civil Rights Attorney Ben Crump said that this decision has now marked a milestone in the journey and will be a turning point in the civil rights movement.

On August 8, the fourth victim was identified by authorities, who have not ruled out a connection between the killings of many Muslim men in Albuquerque. Authorities have stated that the victims' race and religion were common factors in three of the murders the previous week. The police said they thought that Friday’s murder could be related to the three killings of Muslim men who belonged to South Asia, Al Jazeera reported.

In the nine months prior to the death of Naeem Hussian on Friday (August 5), three other Muslim men were killed in ambush shootings. Due to the killings, Muslims in the US are now afraid because they have experienced prejudice, discrimination, and violence. Hussain was a 25-year-old man from Pakistan and passed away shortly after two other Pakistanis, Muhammad Afzaal Hussain, 27, and Aftab Hussein, 41. The first instance that took place was the death of a 62-year-old Afghani man, Mohammad Ahmadi, in November last year.

A member of the Muslim community in New York, Debbie Almontaser, on his Twitter said, "The fact the suspect remains at large is terrifying." She further said, "Who is next?!"

The US man had "vaccine-derived" polio, which occurs when a country uses a weakened version of the virus for immunisation. A more recent version of the vaccine, which does not include any live viruses, is used in the US and other developed nations. Currently, only 60 per cent are vaccinated in Rockland County. It also faced a measles outbreak in 2018. Field teams are sent to encourage vaccinations, especially amongst children, BBC reported.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has urged parents to make sure their kids have had all of the recommended vaccinations, Mirror reported.
