US authorities seized three artworks sought by the heirs of a Jewish art collector who died in the Holocaust, officials said Thursday.&nbsp;

They confirmed a story in The New York Times that said New York investigators had taken these works by the 1900s Austrian expressionist Egon Schiele from three museums throughout the country.&nbsp;

In warrants issued Tuesday and seen by AFP, the New York state supreme court said "there is reasonable cause to believe" the works constitute stolen property.&nbsp;

The works were seized from the Art Institute of Chicago, the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, and the Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College in Ohio.&nbsp;

The works in question are: "Russian War Prisoner" (1916), a watercolor and pencil on paper piece valued at $1.25 million, seized from the Art Institute; “Portrait of a Man” (1917), a pencil on paper drawing valued at $1 million and seized from the Carnegie Museum of Art; and "Girl With Black Hair" (1911), a watercolor and pencil on paper work valued at $1.5 million and taken from Oberlin.&nbsp;

The warrants state that these works can remain where they are for 60 days, and they will be taken to New York at a later date.&nbsp;

"We are confident in our legal acquisition and lawful possession of this work," the Art Institute of Chicago said, adding that the piece held there is the subject of a civil case in federal court.&nbsp;

The Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh pledged to "cooperate fully with inquiries from relevant authorities."&nbsp;

The works are being sought by living heirs of Fritz Grunbaum, a prominent Jewish art collector and cabaret artist who died in the Dachau concentration camp in Germany in 1941.&nbsp;

The Times said the probe underway concerns about a dozen Schiele works allegedly stolen by the Nazis.&nbsp;

Grunbaum's heirs have been in court for years trying to recover works that belonged to him.&nbsp;

Courts ruled in 2005 that they had waited too long to act but in 2018 they got a favorable judgment and recovered two pieces.&nbsp;

The Italy-bound United Airlines Flight 510 took off from Newark Liberty International Airport on Wednesday at 8:37 pm (local time) but never made it to Rome after the Boeing 777 experienced an issue with its cabin pressurization, said a report by the New York Post.

The issue forced the plane to rapidly drop and the pilot to turn the aircraft carrying 270 passengers and 14 crew members around, a spokesperson told The Post. The flight landed back at the Newark airport at 12:27 am (local time) instead of its planned destination of Rome–Fiumicino International Airport, according to flight tracker FlightAware.

The flight tracker data showed that before the plane reversed its course, it fell some 28,000 feet in just 10 minutes.&nbsp;

The United Airlines Flight 510 returned to Newark “to address a possible loss of cabin pressure,” said a spokesperson for the airline, in a statement. The incident was also confirmed by the Federal Aviation Administration which attributed the reported plunge to a “pressurization issue.”

The United Airlines passengers eventually made it to Rome after being flown in another aircraft, said the airline spokesperson.&nbsp;

<h2>Not the first time</h2>

According to flight tracking data, a United Airlines 777 that left Kahului Airport in Hawaii in December last year plunged towards the ocean for 21 seconds shortly after take-off. The plane came within nearly 800 feet of sea level.

The incident on United Flight 1722 happened on December 18 and neither the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) nor the airline indicated that the incident caused any injuries.&nbsp;

The plunge had occurred around a minute after take-off. FlightRadar24 data shows that the plane lost more than half its altitude and came within 775 feet of sea level. It gained speed as it dropped 1,425 feet from 2,200 feet. Luckily, it regained its climb out of Kahului on the island of Maui.

The media report citing two anonymous congressional aides said that the Ukrainian president will also visit Capitol Hill to lobby for more US aid to fight the war against Russia.

Both Biden and Zelensky are also due to attend the meeting of the UNGA next week where the Ukrainian president is also planning to hold meetings with other visiting world leaders, reported CBS News.&nbsp; 
 
Zelensky’s last visit to Washington was back in December 2022 when he addressed a joint session of the US Congress which was his first&nbsp;known trip outside Ukraine since the Russian invasion, which began in February that year.&nbsp;

In August, Biden had called on the US Congress to send another $24 billion to Ukraine. The package would include $13.1 billion in military aid and $8.5 billion for humanitarian support for Ukraine. It also reportedly includes $2.3 billion for financing and to catalyse donors through the World Bank.&nbsp;

However, the request comes amid signs of softening support for Ukraine among Americans and Congress becoming increasingly divided over providing additional funding for Ukraine as the war is well into its second year.&nbsp;

Republican lawmakers have been pushing for broad federal spending cuts while some are looking to entirely stop money to Ukraine, mostly GOP members who are allied with former US president Donald Trump.&nbsp;

<h2>What do US officials believe about the disappearance?</h2>

In the latest sign of political turmoil involving high-ranking officials in China, three US officials and two people who were briefed on the intelligence in Washington concluded that Li has been “stripped of his responsibilities as defence minister.”

However, people briefed on the matter did not say what led President Joe Biden’s administration to come to this conclusion, the FT report added.

The supposed speculations by officials in Washington were further stoked by Rahm Emanuel, the US ambassador to Japan, on Friday, after he took to X and wrote, “1st: Defense Minister Li Shangfu hasn’t been seen or heard from in 3 weeks. 2nd: He was a no-show for his trip to Vietnam. Now: He’s absent from his scheduled meeting with the Singaporean Chief of Navy because he was placed on house arrest???”

The post was also accompanied by the hashtag #MysteryInBeijingBuilding after he made a reference to William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet and said “Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.”

It was not immediately clear which meeting with the Singaporean Chief of Navy&nbsp;Emanuel&nbsp;was referring to. As per Reuters, the Singapore Navy’s Rear Admiral Sean Wat was in China from September 4 to 9 where he met with PLA Navy commander Dong Jun and other Navy leaders, said the city-state’s defence ministry on its website.&nbsp;

But there was no mention of him meeting or being scheduled to meet Li.

Similarly, the US official, last week wrote that China’s government was “now resembling Agatha Christie’s novel And Then There Were None”.&nbsp;

He added, “First, Foreign Minister Qin Gang goes missing, then the Rocket Force commanders go missing, and now Defence Minister Li Shangfu hasn’t been seen in public for two weeks,” with the hashtag #MysteryInBeijingBuilding.

Meanwhile, officials in Washington and Beijing are yet to respond to the speculations about Li’s abrupt disappearance.&nbsp;

<h2>When was Li last seen?</h2>

The 65-year-old Chinese defence official was last seen in Beijing on August 29 delivering a key-note address at a security forum with African nations. Notably, Li’s role as China’s defence minister is mainly responsible for defence diplomacy as opposed to actually commanding combat forces.&nbsp;

In 2018, the US had sanctioned Li for buying weapons from Russia’s largest arms exporter, Rosoboronexport.

Li’s supposed disappearance comes after China’s unexplained replacement of its foreign minister, Qin Gang, in July after his prolonged absence from public view.&nbsp;

Based on government data released on Wednesday, consumer inflation in the United States rose in August for a second consecutive month, increasing pressure on policymakers to lower prices.&nbsp;

According to the Labour Department, the consumer price index (CPI), a crucial inflation indicator, increased by 3.7 per cent from a year ago, accelerating from&nbsp;3.2 per cent in&nbsp;July. However, a measurement that removed volatile parts cooled.

The Federal Reserve has rapidly increased the benchmark lending rate since March of last year in an effort to reduce demand and stably cut inflation, but the present level is persistently higher than the two percent stated target.

&nbsp;“The index for gasoline was the largest contributor to the monthly all items increase, accounting for over half of the increase,” AFP quoted the Labor Department as saying.

The government also noted that the rent-adjusted shelter index continues to rise for the 40th straight month.

The CPI increased by 0.6 per cent from July to August, speeding up from the previous month as well.

While the most recent report may cause the Fed to pause for a while, economists believe it is unlikely to result in additional rate increases.

Ernest and Young chief economist Gregory Daco told AFP that should the “core” readings weaken consistently, “that will be taken as a sign by the Fed that perhaps further tightening is not necessary.”

The Seattle Times has reported that officer Daniel Auderer, who is also vice-president of Seattle Police Officers Guild (SPOG), was assigned to determine whether officer Dave was under influence. The Seattle Police Department earlier this week released a video recorded from Auderer's body-cam which he forgot to switch off.

This video in which Auderer can be seen joking about Kandula's death has created a controversy.
