A dog in the United States accidentally fired a gun that was left on the backseat of a pickup truck after stepping on it and killing a man as per authorities. The victim, who was seated in the front passenger seat of the truck, sustained the gunshot in the rear when he and the dog were out on a hunting trip, according to Kansas police.

Officials who spoke to AFP did not mention whether the 30-year-old man who died was the dog's owner.

"A canine belonging to the owner of the pickup stepped on the rifle, causing the weapon to discharge. The fired round struck the passenger, who died of his injuries on scene," the Sumner County Sheriff's office said.

"The investigation is ongoing, but the preliminary investigation shows it to be a hunting-related accident," the sheriff's office added in a separate statement.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February last year there have been multiple reports insinuating that China is backing Moscow in its war against Kyiv. Now, almost a year into the war, the United States has reportedly confronted China with evidence that Chinese state-owned companies may be providing help to Russia in its war against Ukraine.

People familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that the support includes non-lethal military and economic assistance. The report claimed that the Chinese support to Russia is just short of a wholesale evasion of the US sanctions regime.

US: Biden calls for assault weapons ban after California witnesses third mass shooting within three days

In an effort to streamline the nation's Covid-vaccine approach, the US health authority suggested on Monday (January 23) that healthy adults receive one dose of the most recent updated COVID-19 shot each year, similar to the influenza vaccination campaign.

The US Food and Drug Administration also recommended that its panel coming from external experts explore administering two doses of the Covid vaccine annually to selected young children, elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems. In briefing documents sent before to a meeting of its panel on Thursday, the regulator advocated the necessity of routine selection of variations for upgrading the vaccine, comparable to how strains for flu vaccinations are altered yearly (January 26).

“We need to do something different, because right now it's confusing. The messaging has been very, very mixed and confused about how important the vaccine is," said Dr. Bruce Farber, an infectious disease physician and chief of public health and epidemiology at Northwell Health who spoke to Reuters. "One consistent unified message with a standard schedule I think would make a lot of sense," she added.

The FDA thinks that yearly immunisation schedules would help make vaccine deployment less difficult and result in fewer vaccine delivery errors and higher vaccination coverage rates. After announcing its plan to revise last month, the agency's proposal was in line with expectations.

Additionally, the Biden administration has been conducting a booster vaccination programme each fall.

Currently, the majority of people in the United States must receive the initial Covid vaccination in two doses, at least three to four weeks apart from one another, and then a booster dose a few months later.

A former senior FBI agent in New York had been arrested due to his affiliations with a Russian oligarch, ABC News reported on Monday. Charles McGonigal, a special agent in charge of counterintelligence at the FBI's New York Field Office, has been arrested because of his ties with Oleg Deripaska, a Russian billionaire who the US has sanctioned and who was criminally accused last year of breaching those sanctions.

McGonigal left the FBI in 2018. He was detained on Saturday afternoon after arriving at JFK Airport from Sri Lanka, according to the sources.

The Justice Department claims that in 2021, McGonigal and Shestakov, two FBI oligarch investigators, agreed to look into a rival Russian tycoon in exchange for money from Deripaska. In order to conceal the fact that Deripaska was paying McGonigal and Shestakov, it is alleged that they utilised phoney firms to receive money and forged signatures.

Along with allegations of breaking sanctions, both of them are accused of money laundering. The maximum jail time for each of the four offences is 20 years.

"The FBI is committed to the enforcement of economic sanctions designed to protect the United States and our allies, especially against hostile activities of a foreign government and its actors," FBI Assistant Director in Charge Michael Driscoll said in a statement. "Russian oligarchs like Oleg Deripaska perform global malign influence on behalf of the Kremlin and are associated with acts of bribery, extortion, and violence."

"As alleged, Mr. McGonigal and Mr. Shestakov, both US citizens, acted on behalf of Deripaska and fraudulently used a US entity to obscure their activity in violation of US sanctions. After sanctions are imposed, they must be enforced equally against all US citizens in order to be successful. There are no exceptions for anyone, including a former FBI official like Mr. McGonigal," Driscoll added.

Shestakov, 69, who was based in Morris, Connecticut, is also accused of lying to FBI agents about his connection with Deripaska in November 2021. He faces one count of making false statements in addition to the other accusations.

According to Treasury officials, Deripaska, an aluminum mogul, was one of twenty Russians sanctioned by the Treasury Department in 2018 as retaliation for "the Russian government's continuous and more nefarious operations throughout the globe."

US automaker Ford plans to eliminate 3,200 jobs in Germany and expressed its concern for the future of the company's facilities in the continent's largest economy. The announcement coincided with concerns in the EU that companies would relocate their operations to the US as a result of the historic Inflation Reduction Act, which was recently approved and provides tax breaks for batteries and electric automobiles built in the US.

The majority of the job cuts, according to a spokeswoman for the IG Metall union, would occur in Cologne, where Ford has a sizable facility, however, all locations around Germany are under threat.

"We at IG Metall are extremely concerned about the future of the German development divisions and, as a whole, about the future of the German Ford sites," said a statement from the union after an extraordinary meeting with management.

The development centre has "successfully designed models for the European market, which often brought global success for the company," according to IG Metall, a union that represents employees in the important electrical and metal industries.

If given the opportunity, Ford's German employees can continue to create popular electric vehicles for Europe, according to the union.

Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris said that abortion rights are being attacked across the country in a speech commemorating the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that upheld the right to an abortion until it was reversed last year.

"The right of every woman in every state in this country to make decisions about her own body is on the line," Harris said. "Republicans in Congress are now calling for a nationwide abortion ban... How dare they?"

In the 2023 legislative session, 60 anti-abortion legislation have been submitted, according to White House officials last week, and more than 26 million women presently reside in places where abortion is illegal.
