'Naked aggression': In UN speech, Biden hits hard at Russia for prolonged war in Ukraine

<p>A recent study funded by the United States government suggests that women exposed to several widely used chemicals appear to face a higher chance of ovarian and other types of cancers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The research conducted by a team of academic researchers using the data collected by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found a link between women diagnosed with certain cancers and exposed to toxic PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals”.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>About the study</strong></h2>

<p>According to the study published in the <em>Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology,&nbsp;</em>some women who suffered from “hormonally driven” cancers were exposed to certain PFAS.</p>

<p>“These PFAS chemicals appear to disrupt hormone function in women, which is one potential mechanism that increases odds of hormone-related cancers in women,” said Amber Cathey, a research faculty scientist at the University of Michigan and lead author of the study.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Whereas the researchers did not find similar associations between the chemical and cancer diagnoses in men.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The study is based on the data collected through a CDC biomonitoring programme between 2005 to 2018 and included more than 10,000 people.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The scientists then looked at the previous cancer diagnoses as well as the level of PFAS and phenols in blood and urine collected from the participants.</p>

<p>PFAS are used in thousands of household and industrial products including stain- and water-resistant fabrics, cleaning products, paints, and fire-fighting foams and are dubbed “forever chemicals” since they are present in the environment for a long time.</p>

<p>Additionally, given how widely these chemicals are used it is nearly impossible to avoid exposure to them. According to a previous report by the CDC, PFAS are found in the blood of 97 per cent of Americans.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“People should care about this because we know that there is widespread human exposure to these chemicals and we have documented data on that,” said Max Aung, assistant professor of environmental health at the USC Keck School of Medicine and senior author of the study, in a statement.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What else did they find?</strong></h2>

<p>The study also found links between women diagnosed with cancer and high exposures to phenols – an organic compound present in many household products, including mouthwash and food packaging.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The researchers also found that higher exposure to PFDE – a long-chained PFAS compound &nbsp;– particularly for women, had double the odds of a previous melanoma diagnosis.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Scientists also found racial differences as white women had greater chances of previous cancer diagnosis with higher PFAS exposure linked with ovarian and uterine cancers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, non-white women were more likely to have previous cancer diagnosis with increased exposure to phenols and parabens which was linked with breast cancer.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The researchers also noted that while it does not prove that exposure to so-called “forever chemicals” led to these cancer diagnoses, it is a strong signal that they may be playing a role and should be studied further.<br />

<p>This comes a week after House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy said he is directing a House committee to open an impeachment inquiry into the Democratic president over his family’s business dealings.</p>

<h2><strong>When will the hearing take place?</strong></h2>

<p>The hearing which will reportedly take place on September 28, is set to “focus on constitutional and legal questions surrounding the President’s involvement in corruption and abuse of public office,” said a spokesperson for the House Oversight Committee, as quoted by the New York Post.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The Oversight Committee will continue to follow the evidence and money trail to provide the transparency and accountability that Americans demand from their government,” the statement added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The&nbsp;five detainees&nbsp;Emad Shargi, Morad Tahbaz and Siamak Namazi, along with two Americans who have not been publicly named arrived near&nbsp;Washington DC a day after being&nbsp;flown out of Tehran on a Qatari government jet to Doha, according to American media reports.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The nightmare is finally over,” said Babak Namazi, speaking with his arm around his returning brother Siamak at Fort Belvoir in the US state of Virginia, as per Reuters.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Prisoners swapped</strong></h2>

<p>Tehran and Washington had agreed to swap five prisoners each. The swap comes after months of&nbsp;Qatar-mediated talks and took place&nbsp;after the US and Iran received confirmation that the funds, blocked in South Korea, had been transferred to accounts in Doha.</p>

<p>The deal brokered by Qatar was agreed upon after at least a reported eight rounds of talks over several months between Iran and the US as they continue to remain at odds over a number of issues.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Two other Iranians released would stay in the US at their request and one detainee would join his family in a third country, according to Iranian officials.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The $6 billion frozen in South Korea had been generated by Iran through oil sales to Seoul. It was stuck after the US under former president Donald Trump reimposed sanctions as he withdrew from a landmark nuclear accord of 2015.&nbsp;</p>

He told the media outlet, “The lottery system needs to be replaced by actual meritocratic admission. It’s a form of indentured servitude that only accrues to the benefit of the company that sponsored an H-1B immigrant. I’ll gut it,” he said in a statement, adding that the U.S. needs to eliminate chain-based migration.</p>

<p>The data quoted by Politico suggested that from 2018 to 2023, Roivant Sciences hired employees under H1-B visas. The application was approved by US Citizenship and Immigration Services.&nbsp;H1-B visa allows employers in the US to recruit foreign workers with specialised skills to work in the country.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The system is “bad for everyone involved,” Ramaswamy told Politico.</p>

<p>The American citizens who had been detained in Iran, some for nearly a decade, were freed after a controversial prisoner swap involving the unfreezing of at least $6 billion of Iranian money by US President Joe Biden’s administration.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As a part of the deal, Tehran and Washington had agreed to swap five prisoners each.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>American citizens leave Tehran</strong></h2>

<p>A report by Reuters citing a source said that a Qatari plane took off from Tehran carrying the five American detainees and two of their relatives shortly after the US and Iran received confirmation that the funds, blocked in South Korea, had been transferred to accounts in Doha.</p>

<p>The rare deal brokered by Qatar between the two arch-enemies triggered an exchange sequence which was agreed upon after at least a reported eight rounds of talks over several months between Iran and the US as they&nbsp;continue&nbsp;to remain at odds over a number of issues. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>The five Americans with dual nationality are in “good health,” and will fly to Doha and then to the US, said an Iranian official briefed on the process, as per Reuters.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>About the detainees</strong></h2>

<p>The five American detainees include well-known conservationist Morad Tahbaz (67), an Iranian-American environmentalist who also holds British citizenship; Siamak Namazi (51), a businessman with dual US-Iranian citizenship; and an Iranian-American businessman, named Emad Sharghi (59).&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, The fourth and fifth prisoners were not identified as they wished to remain anonymous.</p>

<p>Ahead of their arrival, Biden had granted clemency to five Iranians jailed or awaiting trial for non-violent crimes, a US official told AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Iranian detainees in US</strong></h2>

<p>The five Iranians held in the US are Mehrdad Moin-Ansari, Kambiz Attar-Kashani, Reza Sarhangpour-Kafrani, Amin Hassanzadeh and Kaveh Afrasiabi, according to officials in Tehran. Two of the five Iranians to be released in the exchange had landed in Doha, as per Iranian media reports.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Mehrdad Moein Ansari and Reza Sarhangpour, who were released in the US-Iran prisoner exchange and were planning to travel to Iran, entered Doha,” reported Tasnim news agency.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Two Iranians released would stay in the US at their request and one detainee would join his family in a third country, said Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The $6 billion frozen in South Korea &nbsp;had been generated by Iran&nbsp;through oil sales to Seoul. It was stuck&nbsp;after the US under former president Donald Trump reimposed sanctions as he withdrew from a landmark nuclear accord of 2015.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Biden sanctions former Iranian president: Report</strong></h2>

<p>A report by AFP citing a senior US official who spoke on condition of anonymity said Biden is also imposing new sanctions on Iran’s intelligence ministry and former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad over alleged deceit over the disappearance of Bob Levinson, a former FBI agent.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The United States will never give up on Bob Levinson’s case. We call on the Iranian regime to give a full account of what happened to Bob Levinson,” the US official told AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The former FBI agent disappeared in Iran under mysterious circumstances and is presumed dead. According to the report, Levinson had travelled to the Iranian island of Kish on a CIA mission and has not been heard from while Iran has not acknowledged his arrest.</p>
