This comes after Manhattan prosecutors said that they will bring criminal charges against the accused who faces a charge of second-degree manslaughter, which could lead to a jail term of up to 15 years.

Jordan Neely’s death

A now-viral video shows Penny putting 30-year-old Jordan Neely in a chokehold and pinning him to the floor of an F train in Manhattan, nearly two weeks earlier. The death of Jordan Neely, also known as a Michael Jackson impersonator who often performed on the train, has sparked outrage and protests calling for the arrest of the alleged perpetrator.

According to witnesses, the serviceman, who is White, allegedly restrained Neely after the latter was complaining loudly about being hungry and saying he was ready to die. Subsequently, Penny came up behind him and gripped him around the neck until he appeared to stop moving. Neely was later declared dead.

Crunch talks between US President Joe Biden and senior Republicans have been postponed until early next week to allow staff to continue working, the White House said in a statement Thursday.

Writer E. Jean Carroll said she is considering suing Former United States President Donald Trump for defamation for his remarks about her during a televised CNN town hall, a day after he was found guilty of sexually abusing and defaming her. Meanwhile, Trump, on Thursday (May 11) appealed the New York jury’s verdict in the civil case against him.

The CNN town hall, which has since garnered widespread condemnation of the US broadcaster, took place on Wednesday night in New Hampshire where Trump was heard, yet again, insulting and demeaning Carroll and her experience.

During the CNN event, the former president called the account of a sexual assault a “fake” and “made-up story,” while referring to it as “hanky-panky”. The several disparaging comments elicited applause and laughter from the audience which consisted of Republicans and independent voters.

Carroll told the New York Times that the remarks were upsetting and said, “It’s just stupid, it’s just disgusting, vile, foul, it wounds people.” She added, “I am upset on the behalf of young men in America. They cannot listen to this balderdash and this old-timey view of women, which is a cave-man view.”

Meanwhile, her lawyer, Roberta Kaplan told the newspaper, that “we have to give serious consideration to it,” referring to the possibility of a defamation lawsuit. “We have to weigh the various pros and cons and we’ll come to a decision in the next day or so, probably,” Kaplan told the Times.

Trump appeals verdict

The nine-member jury in Manhattan federal court delivered its verdict that Trump sexually abused Carroll and then defamed her by calling her a liar, on Tuesday, and awarded about $5 million in compensatory and punitive damages to the writer. However, the former president has since appealed the verdict.

On Thursday, Trump notified the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals that he was appealing the verdict, reported Reuters, as his lawyer Joseph Tacopina previously said he would. After the verdict, Trump took to his social media platform Truth Social and called the verdict a “disgrace” and continuation of a “witch hunt” against him.

Sudan’s warring sides, early Friday (May 12) signed an agreement and committed to protecting civilians and the movement of humanitarian aid, however, have not yet agreed to a ceasefire, said the United States officials. This comes nearly a week after US-Saudi Arabia brokered talks between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary faction Rapid Support Forces (RSF) began in Jeddah.

What have the two sides agreed to do?

A report by the news agency AFP, citing a US official involved in what has been dubbed as “pre-negotiation talks”, said that the two sides have signed the agreement on a “declaration of commitment to protect the civilians of Sudan”.

“We affirm our commitment to ensuring the protection of civilians at all times, including by allowing safe passage for civilians to leave areas of active hostilities on a voluntary basis in the direction of their choice,” the declaration stated. The two sides also signed a declaration that they would work towards a short-term ceasefire in further talks, reported Reuters.

The agreement in question largely implies that both sides will let in humanitarian assistance, to allow the restoration of electricity, water and other basic services. Furthermore, the two sides will also withdraw security forces from hospitals and arrange for “respectful burial” of the dead.

“The two sides are quite far apart,” a US State Department official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters. The official also said that the negotiators are working with Saudi and US mediators and set a goal of reaching a ceasefire deal in up to 10 days.

“This is not a ceasefire. This is an affirmation of their obligations under international humanitarian law, particularly with regard to the treatment of civilians and the need to create space for humanitarians to operate,” the US official told AFP.

She added, “We are hopeful, cautiously, that their willingness to sign this document will create some momentum that will force them to create the space,” to bring in relief supplies. Hundreds of people have been killed due to the conflict which suddenly began on April 15 and has triggered a humanitarian crisis.

Situation in Sudan

The two sides have been fighting for nearly a month and as of Thursday, the fighting has rocked Halfaya, an entry point to the capital city of Khartoum. Meanwhile, the residents, as per Reuters, also heard warplanes circling over Khartoum and its adjoining cities of Bahri and Omdurman. However, the fighting reportedly seemed calmer than the previous day.

According to the World Health Organization, over 600 people have been killed and more than 5,000 injured in the fighting. The country’s Health Ministry said at least 450 people were killed in the western Darfur region alone. This comes as many UN agencies and NGOs announced temporary suspensions of their work in Khartoum and Darfur due to the intense fighting.

After 3 years, US has lifted Covid-19 restrictions, known as Title 42. The curbs allowed border agents to quickly expel many migrants caught crossing the border back to Mexico. Immigration processing has reverted to a pre-existing system, known as Title 8, but with new, much more stringent rules. Now, anyone who illegally enters US can be expelled, facing a lengthy ban on coming back; and possible criminal charges. At the frontier, some made last-minute attempts to beat the deadline, fording the Rio Grande river, hoping they might be released after turning themselves into border patrol.

Santos, 34, is accused of deceiving potential political supporters by laundering money to pay for his personal costs and fraudulently collecting unemployment benefits while he was employed in the 13-count indictment, which was released on Wednesday, reported Reuters.

Additionally, he is charged with lying to the House of Representatives about his possessions, earnings, and debts.

"He used political contributions to line his pockets, unlawfully applied for unemployment benefits that should have gone to New Yorkers who had lost their jobs due to the pandemic, and lied to the House of Representatives," Peace said.

George Santos, a newly elected Republican who has defied calls to resign for fabricating his resume, was detained on federal accusations of fraud, money laundering, and theft of public funds on Wednesday. This is the latest blow to Santos. "Taken together, the allegations in the indictment charge Santos with relying on repeated dishonesty and deception to ascend to the halls of Congress and enrich himself," Breon Peace, the US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, said in a statement. "He used political contributions to line his pockets, unlawfully applied for unemployment benefits that should have gone to New Yorkers who had lost their jobs due to the pandemic, and lied to the House of Representatives," Peace said. Former United States President Donald Trump sexually abused magazine writer E. Jean Carroll in the 1990s and then defamed her by calling her a liar, the jurors decided on Tuesday (May 9). The nine-member jury in Manhattan federal court awarded about $5 million in compensatory and punitive damages to Carroll.

The jury’s decision

The decision was made by a six-men and three-women jury, which was required to reach a unanimous verdict. According to reports, the unanimous verdict was reached in just less than three hours. However, the jurors did not agree with Carroll’s allegation that the former president raped her, reported Reuters.

The former president should pay nearly $3 million in damages to Carroll, the jury found, after she successfully proved her defamation claim against him. Trump should also pay around $2 million in damages for her civil battery claim. In line with this, the jury has awarded a total of about $5 million to the writer, in what is being viewed as a significant defeat for the former president.

What happened in the court?

According to media reports, Carroll was seen holding hands with her lawyers as the verdict was being read and smiled after Trump was found liable for sexually abusing and defaming her. She was later seen leaving the courthouse with her lawyer Roberta Kaplan smiling and wearing sunglasses and left without addressing the reporters gathered outside.

He added, "If you're one who elects to speak to others and to identify yourselves to others, I direct you not to identify anyone else who sat on this jury."

After the high-stakes meeting, Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said that there was no new “movement” which essentially indicated that no agreement was reached.

The meeting was also attended by Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell and the top Democrats in Congress, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned that Washington could run short of cash to pay all of the government’s bills as soon as June without a debt limit increase. The top lawmakers will continue talks on Friday.

The high-stakes meet

The high-stakes meeting between lawmakers lasted about an hour, while the aides may continue negotiations as soon as Tuesday night on the federal budget. Biden called the meeting “productive” while McCarthy said, “I didn’t see any new movement”.

“Everyone in the meeting understood the risks of default,” said the US president, adding that the House speaker, during the meeting said, that the country will not default on its debt. “We need to take the threat of default off the table,” said Biden after the meeting, adding that default “is not an option”.

McCarthy, after the meeting talking to reporters and seemingly complaining about the US president said that Biden did not agree to talks until time was running out and, “That’s not a way to govern.”

Furthermore, Schumer, a Democrat, blamed McCarthy for refusing to take default off the table and that the House speaker was “greatly endangering America.” While Jeffries said Republicans had waited for weeks to publish a budget and that “extreme” Republicans “have indicated that they are willing to take us down the path of default.”

On the other hand, McConnell blamed Biden for not being serious about negotiations.

What are Biden’s options now?

According to reports, officials in the White House have discussed whether Biden has the authority to lift the debt limit by invoking the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution, on his own. However, in an interview, last week the US president said that they are not there yet.

Republican-led House

The Republican-led House of Representatives passed a bill, in April, that would raise the debt ceiling in exchange for budget cuts to healthcare for the poor, transportation, and so on. The bill would implement $4.5 trillion in spending cuts in exchange for a $1.5 trillion increase in the US debt limit.

However, it is very unlikely to pass the Democrat-controlled Senate while the White House has previously said that the president would veto the legislation.

Notably, as the speaker of the House McCarthy has primary control over US budget issues and Biden has said he would not accept these deep cuts, the impasse has raised the possibility of Congress and the White House overseeing the first national debt default.

Biden might cancel Asia trip

After the meeting, Biden indicated that he might cancel his upcoming trip to Asia for Group of Seven (G7) meetings. When asked about the meetings, he said that it is “possible” that he would not make the trip, “If somehow we got down to the wire and still haven't resolved this... I would not go,” the US president told reporters, as quoted by news agency AFP.

Yellen’s warning

In a letter addressed to the House speaker and other lawmakers earlier this month, Yellen had warned, “Our best estimate is that we will be unable to continue to satisfy all of the government's obligations by early June, and potentially as early as June 1, if Congress does not raise or suspend the debt limit before that time.”

She added, “It is impossible to predict with certainty the exact date when Treasury will be unable to pay the government’s bills, and I will continue to update Congress in the coming weeks as more information becomes available.”

Yellen has also recently said that unless Congress acts in the coming weeks, “financial and economic chaos would ensue.” If the debt ceiling is not raised or suspended by Congress the government risks defaulting on payment obligations which would have a significant impact on the US economy.

US Pres Biden, House Speaker McCarthy meeting on debt ceiling fails to break deadlock, threat of default looms

The debt limit timebomb is ticking for the Biden administration. The question looming now is: Will President Joe Biden & Republican lawmakers be able to break the deadlock? They are scheduled to meet on Tuesday, led by Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

Will the US debt limit crisis end soon?

In just the first few months of the year, shootings have frequently grabbed headlines. According to the Gun Violence Archive, at least 13,959 people have died in the United States from gun violence as of May 1, 2023 - or around 115 people each day on average.

85 children and 491 teenagers were among those who died.

The vast majority of deaths from gun violence this year have been suicides. In 2023, there were 66 suicide fatalities on average each day.

There have been 184 mass shootings in 2023 so far, which is defined by the Gun Violence Archive as an incident in which four or more victims are shot or killed. These mass shootings have led to 248 deaths and 744 injuries.

The majority of these deaths have taken place in Texas, California, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Illinois and Louisiana.

Alabama became the most recent state in the United States to eliminate the requirement for a state permit that includes a background check to carry a concealed handgun. In simple terms, a person no longer needs a license to legally carry a concealed handgun in public as per this law.

With this move, half of the 50 states in the US now let anyone carry handguns without a permit—a provision that was restricted to Vermont and Alaska 13 years ago.

As per Centers for Disease Control and Prevention firearm fatality data for 2020, the total number of deaths from firearm-related incidents in the US rose to 45,222 in 2020, the most the CDC has ever documented since it started keeping track of such deaths in 1968. This roughly translates to 124 individuals on an average dying from gun violence each day.

American gun ownership rates are the highest in the world

A 2018 report by the Geneva-based Small Arms Survey discovered that US gun owners had 393.3 million firearms, which is more than the nation's current population of 330 million.

US gun killings compared with other countries

Data from the CDC shows that homicides accounted for 19,384 deaths in 2020 or 43 per cent of all deaths. The statistic indicates a 75 per cent rise over the previous ten years and a 34 per cent increase from 2019. The statistics show that in the US, a firearm claims close to 53 lives per day. The research also reveals that 79 per cent of homicides were committed using firearms.

Rise in mass shootings in the US

Data from Washington-based Gun Violence Archive shows that there were more than 600 mass shootings in the United States in 2022 alone, more than twice the 336 mass shootings that were reported four years prior. In the study, 11 per cent of respondents thought that rules should be "made less strict." In addition to being incredibly politicised and controversial, the subject generally divides people into different political camps.

Based on the same research, Democrats support stronger gun legislation almost unanimously, with approximately 91 per cent of them being in favour. Contrarily, only 24 per cent of Republicans and 45 per cent of Independent voters had the same opinion.
