The five-member Indian delegation was led by CBI Director Praveen Sood and also included the National Investigation Agency (NIA) Director General Dinkar Gupta.&nbsp;

“India has also geolocated more than 184 criminals in various countries and initiated formal proceedings for their return,” a CBI spokesperson said.

“India has stressed on the need to deny any safe haven for crime, criminals and proceeds of crimes. The need for coordinated strategies to curtail criminal organisations, which operate across international jurisdictions, was deliberated,” the statement added.&nbsp;

<h2>'Prevent these crimes on a real-time basis'</h2>

At the 91st General Assembly of Interpol in Vienna, India has called for concerted global efforts, particularly through Interpol, to combat transnational crimes such as terrorism, online radicalisation, and cyber-enabled financial fraud in 'real-time'.

The delegation also celebrated the centenary year of Interpol, formed in 1923.

This year, India has successfully used&nbsp;Interpol channels and collaborations with global law enforcement agencies, resulting in bringing back 24 wanted criminals, a record-breaking achievement, as per CBI.&nbsp;

The need for coordinated strategies to counter criminal organisations operating across international borders was a focal point.

“Discussions were held for better sharing of criminal information through Interpol channels to expedite mutual legal assistance and extradition requests,” the spokesperson said.&nbsp;

The United States House of Representatives&nbsp;on Thursday (Nov 30) passed a resolution which would block Iran from ever accessing the $6 billion that Washington recently transferred to Qatar as part of a controversial prisoner swap which took place earlier this year.&nbsp;

The House Republicans pushed the measure in response to Tehran’s alleged role in the deadly October 7 attacks by the Palestinian militant group Hamas on Israel.&nbsp;

In September, Iran and the US held a prisoner swap which saw the exchange of five American citizens who were detained in Tehran with the same number of Iranians held in Washington. The swap also included the unfreezing of at least $6 billion of Iranian money by US President Joe Biden’s administration.&nbsp;

The resolution titled ‘No Funds for Iranian Terrorism Act’ in the lower chamber of Congress was passed with 307-119 votes as Republicans supposedly sought to hold the Biden administration accountable for what they called complicity in funding Iranian-backed terrorism in the Middle East.

However, US officials have maintained they have not transferred even a single dollar to Iran yet and even when they do, it will be used for humanitarian needs.&nbsp;

But critics, including several House Republicans, have said that despite the money being used for humanitarian aid, it could free up other funds for Iran to provide support to Hamas.&nbsp;

This comes amid reports of Tehran’s alleged involvement and support for the Palestinian militant group ahead of their October 7 attacks on Israel.&nbsp;

The resolution also includes measures like imposing new sanctions on the funds to prevent the transfer of any monies to Iran and threatens to sanction any government or individual involved in the processing of the transfer of the funds.

Retired Supreme Court justice Sandra Day O'Connor, the first woman appointed to the highest US court, died on Friday, according to an official announcement. She was 93.

O'Connor, who stepped down in 2006, died at her home in Phoenix, Arizona, the court said in a statement.

"Sandra Day O'Connor blazed an historic trail as our Nation's first female Justice," Chief Justice John Roberts said. "She met that challenge with undaunted determination, indisputable ability, and engaging candor.

"We celebrate her enduring legacy as a true public servant and patriot."

O'Connor was appointed to the Supreme Court by president Ronald Reagan in 1981 and stepped down in 2006.

She wielded enormous influence as the key centrist on a sharply divided bench, where she often displayed a preference for pragmatism over ideology.

O'Connor frequently emerged as a crucial swing vote, breaking with her conservative colleagues and providing the fifth vote to make a liberal majority on several key occasions.

She then sided with the majority that blocked the 2000 Florida recount and effectively handed the presidency to George W. Bush.

O'Connor proved the decisive vote on key cases that upheld the government's neutrality towards religion, including a 2005 ruling that it was unconstitutional for the Ten Commandments to be displayed in several courthouses.

Sandra Day was born on March 26, 1930, in El Paso, Texas and grew up on her parents' cattle ranch in southeastern Arizona.

A legal dispute over her family's ranch stirred her interest in law and she enrolled at Stanford Law School, where she briefly dated William Rehnquist, a classmate with whom she would eventually serve on the Supreme Court for more than two decades.

Following a five-year break from work when she started a family she served as an Arizona assistant attorney general from 1965 to 1969, when she was appointed to a vacancy in the Arizona state senate.

In 1974, O'Connor ran successfully for trial judge, a position she held until her appointment to the Arizona Court of Appeals in 1979.

Eighteen months later, Reagan nominated her to the Supreme Court.

Upon leaving the court, in part due to her husband's battle with Alzheimer's, O'Connor committed her remaining years to civic engagement.

She founded iCivics in 2009 to teach middle and high school students about civics via online games and other remote learning tools. It reaches millions of students a year, according to its website.

The law enforcement sprung into action in the wake of a 911 call from a citizen who became aware of the victim's tragic situation.&nbsp;

Upon investigating a rural highway home in St Charles County, police arrested Venkatesh R Sattaru, Sravan Varma Penumetcha, and Nikhil Verma Penmatsa. The trio are now facing charges which includes human trafficking, kidnapping, and assault.

<h2>Victim receiving medical treatment</h2>

The victim is currently receiving treatment at a hospital for multiple bone fractures, lacerations, and injuries covering his entire body.

According to reports quoting prosecutor Joe McCulloch, the victim was subjected to appalling conditions over seven months, confined in a basement, forced to sleep on an unfinished floor without bathroom access, and beaten with various objects, including electrical wire, PVC pipe, metal rods, a water supply hose&nbsp;wooden boards and sticks.&nbsp;

McCulloch expressed his outrage, stating, "It’s absolutely inhumane and unconscionable that one human being could treat another human being like this."

<h2>Abuse at the hands of three&nbsp;</h2>

The three accused individuals are alleged to have confined and abused the victim at three different homes, owned by Sattaru in the Missouri cities of Defiance, Dardenne Prairie, and O’Fallon.

The abuse started in April this year.

Sattaru, identified as the main accused, is now facing additional charges of human trafficking for slavery and contributing to human trafficking through the misuse of documentation.

The victim had come to the US from India with aspirations of studying at Missouri University of Science and Technology.

Instead, he was forced by the trio into housework from as early as 4:30 in the morning and was made to work for Sattaru’s IT company too, including also being subjected to physical abuse if tasks were not completed to satisfaction.

A Russian man pleaded guilty on Thursday (Nov 30) to involvement in developing the Trickbot malware which was used to extort American businesses including hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic, the US justice department said.&nbsp;

The man, identified as 40-year-old Vladimir Dunaev is from Russia’s Far East Amur Oblast and was extradited from South Korea to the US two years ago,&nbsp; according to court documents.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<h2>Charges against the Russian national</h2>

Dunaev was charged with conspiracy to commit computer fraud and identity theft and conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bank fraud. He has pleaded guilty to both charges in a court in the US state of Ohio, said the Department of Justice (DOJ).&nbsp;

According to the US officials, Dunaev provided “specialised services and technical abilities in furtherance of the Trickbot scheme.”

He will be charged on March 20, 2024, and faces a maximum penalty of 35 years in prison on both counts.&nbsp;

Dunaev was among nine with alleged links to Russian intelligence services, and were indicted in the US for involvement in the Trickbot scheme.&nbsp;

According to the DOJ, Dunaev’s participation in the scheme was linked to 10 victims in the Northern District of Ohio, including Avon schools and a North Canton real-estate company, who were “defrauded of more than $3.4 million via ransomware deployed by Trickbot.”

“Dunaev and his codefendants hid behind their keyboards, first to create Trickbot, then using it to infect millions of computers worldwide – including those used by hospitals, schools, and businesses – invading privacy and causing untold disruption and financial damage,” said US Attorney Rebecca Lutzko, in a statement.&nbsp;

<h2>What is Trickbot and how did it affect the US?</h2>

Trickbot is a malicious software which was used to launch cyber-attacks which affected millions of Americans as well as hospitals, schools, and businesses and caused tens of millions of dollars in losses.&nbsp;

The group that Dunaev was said to be a part of particularly targeted hospitals and healthcare services during the Covid pandemic in 2020-21, with the malware and an associated ransomware programme called Conti, said the US officials.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, British officials said the Trickbot gang had extorted at least $180 million from people across the world.

Earlier this year, one of Dunaev’s co-conspirators and a Latvian national Alla Witte, who was also a Trickbot malware developer, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit computer fraud and was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison.

Maurer remarked that Taiwan “is very much geared toward the US cycle, essentially the AI-related cycle. A Russian court on Friday (Dec 1) extended the pre-trial detention of American-Russian journalist Alsu Kurmasheva for two more months after she failed to register as a “foreign agent”. The extension comes after Russia formally charged Kurmasheva in October.&nbsp;

The Prague-based editor for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), is the second American to be detained by Russia after Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich.

He was arrested in March on spying charges which he, his employer and the White House have since denied.&nbsp;

<h2>Detention extended&nbsp;</h2>

The court in the Russian city of Kazan has extended detention of Kurmasheva, who holds both US and Russian citizenship, until February 5, 2024, said her employer RFE/RL.&nbsp;

The Russian-American journalist was detained on October 18 after she allegedly failed to register as a “foreign agent” during a visit to Russia.&nbsp;

RFE/RL is funded by the United States Congress and is designated by Moscow as a “foreign agent”. Moscow’s foreign agent law allows Russian authorities to label organisations and people that receive foreign funding as “foreign agents”.

If found guilty, Kurmasheva faces up to five years in prison.

She was also fined $103 (10,000 roubles) on October 11 after she failed to register her US passport with Russian authorities, reported Reuters citing court documents.

“Alsu has spent 45 days behind bars in Russia and, today, her unjust, politically motivated detention has been extended,” said RFE/RL acting President Jeffrey Gedmin, in a statement.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Hostage diplomacy’</h2>

A Russian court in Moscow on Tuesday (Nov 28) also extended Gershkovich, who is awaiting trial on espionage charges, until January 30, 2024.&nbsp;

The 32-year-old American citizen was detained in March by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg on charges of espionage for which he could face up to 20 years in prison.&nbsp;

Both Kurmasheva and Gershkovich deny the charges against them.

The Prague-based editor for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), is the second American to be detained by Russia after Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich. He was arrested in March on spying charges which he, his employer and the White House have since denied. Detention extended The court in the Russian city of Kazan has extended detention of Kurmasheva, who holds both US and Russian citizenship, until February 5, 2024, said her employer RFE/RL. RFE/RL is funded by the United States Congress and is designated by Moscow as a “foreign agent”. Moscow’s foreign agent law allows Russian authorities to label organisations and people that receive foreign funding as “foreign agents”. If found guilty, Kurmasheva faces up to five years in prison. She was also fined $103 (10,000 roubles) on October 11 after she failed to register her US passport with Russian authorities, reported Reuters citing court documents. “Alsu has spent 45 days behind bars in Russia and, today, her unjust, politically motivated detention has been extended,” said RFE/RL acting President Jeffrey Gedmin, in a statement. Alsu must be released and reunited with her family,” he added. ‘Hostage diplomacy’ A Russian court in Moscow on Tuesday (Nov 28) also extended Gershkovich, who is awaiting trial on espionage charges, until January 30, 2024. The 32-year-old American citizen was detained in March by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg on charges of espionage for which he could face up to 20 years in prison. Both Kurmasheva and Gershkovich deny the charges against them.
