Plane airdrops aid in the Northern Gaza strip

The US military executed its inaugural humanitarian aid airdrop into Gaza, utilizing three C-130 planes, as disclosed by two anonymous US officials on Saturday (March 2).

The airdrop involved more than 35,000 meals, and the White House affirmed its commitment to sustaining these efforts, noting Israel's support for the initiative.

In solidarity, several nations, including France, Egypt, and Jordan, have also conducted airdrops to provide aid to Gaza.

The gravity of the situation in the Gaza Strip is underscored by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, reporting that at least 576,000 people, constituting a quarter of the enclave's population, are on the brink of famine.

Disturbingly, individuals resorting to consuming animal feed for survival and reports from medics highlighting cases of children succumbing to malnutrition and dehydration have prompted the U.N. to acknowledge "overwhelming obstacles" in delivering essential aid.

Earlier on Friday, United States President Joe Biden said that the country will start airdropping food and supplies as part of humanitarian aid into Gaza in the days ahead.

On Thursday (Feb 29), a huge crowd of people in North Gaza rushed towards food aid trucks after which the Israeli forces guarding those trucks opened fire at them.

"The loss of life is heartbreaking. People are so desperate that innocent people got caught in a terrible war unable to feed their families, and you saw the response when they tried to get aid in," Biden said.

He added, "And we need to do more in the United States, will do more. In the coming days, we’re going to join with our friends in Jordan and others in providing airdrops."

"In addition to expanding deliveries by land, as I said, we're gonna -- we're gonna insist that Israel facilitate more trucks and more routes to get more and more people the help they need. No excuses because the truth is, aid flowing to Gaza is nowhere nearly enough," the US president further said.

Two of America’s largest pharmacy companies have announced their plans to roll out a prescription abortion pill this month, called mifepristone. CVS and Walgreens said they will start distribution next week in states where abortion is still legal. The move comes after the US Food and Drug Administration last year allowed both companies to sell the pill. Abortion pills are currently accessible in clinics and some states allow them to be prescribed via telemedicine and sent to patients by mail.

Where the pill will be first available?

CVS and Walgreens will first roll out the pill in key pharmacies in New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, California and Illinois.

During this phase, companies will monitor certain parameters regarding quality, safety and privacy for both patients and pharmacy staff.

It must be noted that the US Supreme Court is all set to decide whether the pill could be acquired by mail without an in-person doctor visit. A spokesperson for Walgreens was quoted by BBC as saying that the company will not "dispense in states where the laws are unclear", to protect staff.

With plans to make the pill available in retail pharmacies like CVS or Walgreens, doctors could send prescriptions directly to these locations for patients to pick up from pharmacists.

Court rulings over mifepristone availability

Despite efforts by anti-abortion groups to remove mifepristone from the market in the US, widespread access to the pill has been supported by a federal appeals court, though it ruled against mail delivery or telemedicine prescriptions.

The Supreme Court will soon review this case, and if the ruling stands, patients will need to obtain the pill in person from a clinic, doctor, or pharmacy.

Mifepristone, approved in 2000, is the first part of the FDA-recommended two-pill regimen to terminate a pregnancy. It works by blocking progesterone, a hormone necessary for pregnancy, while the second pill, misoprostol, empties the uterus.

Additionally, mifepristone is used to treat conditions like miscarriages and Cushing syndrome, a hormone-related disorder in women.

Watch: Debris from North Korean missile in Ukraine could expose illicit procurement networks × With plans to make the pill available in retail pharmacies like CVS or Walgreens, doctors could send prescriptions directly to these locations for patients to pick up from pharmacists. Court rulings over mifepristone availability Despite efforts by anti-abortion groups to remove mifepristone from the market in the US, widespread access to the pill has been supported by a federal appeals court, though it ruled against mail delivery or telemedicine prescriptions. The Supreme Court will soon review this case, and if the ruling stands, patients will need to obtain the pill in person from a clinic, doctor, or pharmacy. It works by blocking progesterone, a hormone necessary for pregnancy, while the second pill, misoprostol, empties the uterus. Additionally, mifepristone is used to treat conditions like miscarriages and Cushing syndrome, a hormone-related disorder in women. (With inputs from agencies)

In a few days, the world will witness the Solar Eclipse of 2024, a highly anticipated celestial phenomenon set to unfold on 8th April. Enthusiasts of the night sky eagerly await this captivating event.

A Solar Eclipse occurs when the alignment of the Sun, Moon, and Earth leads to a temporary blockage of the Sun's rays. During this event, the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun casting its shadow upon the Earth's surface. This shadow, known as the 'path of totality', will sweep across a vast expanse of the Earth, offering a mesmerising spectacle for those fortunate enough to witness it.

Expected to span approximately 115 miles within its path, the Solar Eclipse of 8 April 2024, presents a rare opportunity. According to NASA, the occurrence of a total solar eclipse in a particular location is infrequent, with an average interval of about 375 years between occurrences.

Mark your calendars for Monday, 8 April 2024 when the total solar eclipse will make its journey across North America, traversing Canada, the United States, and Mexico. NASA predicts that the initial encounter with totality will occur along the Pacific coast of Mexico around 11:07 a.m. PDT. Subsequently, the eclipse's path will progress northeastward, with Texas experiencing totality at 1:27 p.m. CDT, followed by Maine at 3:35 p.m. EDT, before advancing into the Maritime Provinces of Canada.

For those eager to witness this celestial spectacle safely, it's crucial to adhere to safety guidelines. Ensure you have the correct timings and utilise specialised eye protection specifically designed for solar observation. Looking directly at the Sun without proper eye protection is hazardous, except during the brief total phase of the eclipse when the Moon entirely obscures the Sun's face. Certified solar viewing glasses or pinhole projectors are recommended for safe viewing, while solar filters should be used on telescopes or binoculars. Remember, safety is paramount during this extraordinary celestial event, so never gaze directly at the Sun without adequate protection.

Fishermen off the coast of US' Alaska stumbled upon what authorities fear might be a spy balloon, even though the details are yet to be investigated, media reports said citing sources.

The fishermen reportedly encountered the mysterious object and opted to bring it ashore. Now, once the fishing vessel arrives at the port sometime during the weekend, FBI agents will launch a probe to see what it really is and if indeed it is a spy balloon.

The object, whose nature remains uncertain, will be transported to the FBI lab in Quantico, Virginia. There, the balloon will be analysed. Reports indicated that upon encountering the object, the fishermen promptly shared photographs with law enforcement.

While the exact identity of the object remains elusive, the FBI deemed it similar enough to foreign-government surveillance balloons and thus said that it required a full investigation.

Boeing has reached a $51 million settlement with the US State Department for multiple export violations, a resolution that includes improper actions by Chinese employees in China.

The State Department revealed that three Chinese workers at Boeing facilities in China downloaded technical data pertaining to multiple US Defence Department programmes between 2013 and 2017. These programmes included fighter jets such as the F-18, F-15, and F-22, as well as the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter, the AGM84E cruise missile, and the E-3 airborne warning system.

The settlement also addresses unauthorised downloads of technical data at Boeing and partner facilities in 18 countries, spanning regions such as Australia, Canada, Germany, Russia, and the United Kingdom.

These unauthorised actions occurred between 2013 and 2018, with the administrative settlement covering 199 violations of the Arms Export Control Act and International Traffic in Arms Regulations.

The State Department highlighted that exporting defence articles with proper authorisation was necessary and that the settlement should follow an extensive compliance review by the government.

Boeing said that it would remain dedicated to trade controls obligations and said that it was ready to collaborate with the State Department under the agreement.

The State Department, acknowledging Boeing's cooperation, revealed that the violations were voluntarily disclosed by the aerospace giant, mostly occurring before 2020.

Importantly, the government documents did not allege the disclosure of classified material.

The settlement entails a three-year consent agreement and a $51 million civil penalty.

Of this penalty, $24 million will be suspended by the State Department, allowing Boeing to allocate these funds for remedial compliance measures aimed at reinforcing its compliance program.

As part of the agreement, Boeing will engage an external special compliance officer for at least two years, overseeing the implementation of compliance measures.

Additionally, the settlement requires two external audits to ensure ongoing adherence to regulations.

The violations also encompassed unauthorised exports of defence material and technical data related to defence programs to countries such as Israel, Turkey, and Lebanon.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has set its sights on high-income earners who have neglected to file tax returns, with a targeted approach aimed at 125,000 cases since 2017.

This is based on a Reuters report.

Following a revival of the non-filer enforcement program, previously hampered by budget cuts, the IRS is utilising the $80 billion in funding from the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act to resume mailing non-filing notices.

This initiative includes individuals with an apparent annual income exceeding $1 million, accounting for 25,000 cases, and an additional 100,000 returns indicating income between $400,000 and $1 million.

According to IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel, the total "financial activity" linked to the unfiled returns surpasses $100 billion, with potential unpaid tax liabilities reaching into the hundreds of millions.

The Inflation Reduction Act resources have empowered the agency to fulfil its core responsibility of ensuring fairness for all taxpayers who adhere to the rules.

The IRS plans to send notices to non-filers with apparent income below $400,000, highlighting support to help them file taxes and leverage eligible tax breaks such as the Child Tax Credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit for low-wage earners.

The non-filer enforcement program, dormant since 2016 due to staff reductions driven by budget cuts, has been revitalised with the hiring of up to 7,000 new customer service staff, account managers, and collections staff.

The infusion of funds and new automation technology, facilitated by the IRA funding, allows the IRS to pursue high-income non-filers more effectively.

The agency plans to send out 20,000 to 40,000 notices each week, demonstrating tangible results as it seeks to justify the supplemental $80 billion, which is continually under scrutiny from Republicans in Congress.

The IRS, currently executing this year's tax filing season, is keen on showcasing positive outcomes from the additional funding.

With taxpayer phone waits decreasing and collections totalling nearly $500 million from 1,600 non-filing "millionaires," the agency is underlining the impact of its efforts.

A recent Congressional Budget Office report warns that rescinding $20 billion of the Inflation Reduction Act funds would result in a reduction of federal revenues by $44 billion over 10 years, potentially adding $24 billion to the US budget deficit over the period.
