The global economy would have to wait a little longer for a possible US Fed rate cut in the reason a second straight month of stronger-than-expected inflation that has effectively shut the door on the possibility of a rate cut before June. Not just that higher than expected inflation also makes back-to-back reductions look increasingly less likely.

Gaza has been reeling under an immense humanitarian crisis as access to basic services such as food and water remains limited. With the residents continuing to face hardships, the blockade imposed by Israel has severely restricted the movement of aid in the Gaza Strip through Egypt as well.

This has exacerbated the suffering as the war between the Jewish nation and the Hamas militant group continues relentlessly. Amid this, the US earlier airdropped humanitarian aid, however as per State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller, more ways are to be considered, one of them being building a temporary port to get the aid to Gazans.

In his recent State of the Union address on March 7, US President Joe Biden announced plans for the US military to construct a temporary port along Gaza's Mediterranean coast to facilitate the aid delivery. With this initiative, Washington is aiming to provide essential supplies such as food, medicine, water, and temporary shelters to the people of Gaza.

However, Biden has already clarified that there will be "no US boots" on the Gazan soil, underscoring that the operation will not involve the deployment of US military personnel within the besieged territory.

This comes as Israel, the US' strategic partner in the West Asian region, has expressed support for the temporary dock, reports said even as rift has been growing between Biden and Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu. Sigrid Kaag, the UN humanitarian and reconstruction coordinator for Gaza, also welcomed Washington's involvement in the initiative.

What is the plan? JLOTS, large military vessel, and small cargo ships

The operation, which is anticipated to take several weeks to execute, will be somewhat like a Cyprus initiative, where there is an establishment of a maritime corridor to facilitate the delivery of crucial humanitarian aid by sea, addressing urgent needs. The Cyprus plan is to deliver aid by constructing a landing jetty in Gaza using material salvaged from demolished buildings and rubble.

However, the US plan for a temporary dock is different from the above. In the US initiative, there will be a temporary pier to deliver aid. While initially military-operated, the temporary port is envisioned to transition into a commercially run facility, reports said.

However, there will be logistical and security challenges.

The plan involves Joint Logistics Over The Shore (JLOTS) equipment. This will be akin to a large LEGO system, as per a report by the Times of Israel. It will be comprised of 40-foot-long steel pieces that interlock to create a pier and causeway.

The question is how these steel pieces will be taken to the sea. It will be done with the help of a big Military Sealift Command vessel. As per reports, US troops in a few days will start loading the JLOTS into the vessel.

The resulting causeway can span up to 1,800 feet in length and will be two-laned. This causeway will allow for the transfer of aid from cargo ships to smaller vessels and ultimately onto land in Gaza with the help of another floating pier.

Speaking to a UK media outlet, a retired US Marine Corps colonel Mark Cancian said, "The military's preference is to have an operating port. That makes everything much easier."

"But that's not always possible, either due to a conflict situation or in a peacetime, humanitarian mission," he said adding, "That's where JLOTS comes in."

Now, to manage aid distribution, the US has partnered with Fogbow, a private firm led by former military and intelligence officials. Fogbow's role, known internally as the Blue Beach Plan, will focus on organising aid movement. However, as far as distribution is concerned Fogbow will not be a part of it.

Security measures are also paramount, with reports quoting experts highlighting the need to prevent unauthorised access to the pier area. The Israel Defense Force (IDF) will oversee outer security.

The aid shipments are expected to make a major impact, potentially providing two million meals a day to Gaza's population, helping alleviate the humanitarian crisis exacerbated by the ongoing conflict.

The 7th Transportation Brigade, stationed at Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Virginia, had already started assembling JLOTS equipment and watercraft, as per officials cited by the media reports.

The Biden administration has resorted to airdrops as an unconventional solution to provide aid to Gaza, after months of urging Israel to increase aid delivery and ensure safe passage for trucks carrying supplies.

The Israeli government will also oversee security at the pier and safeguard it against potential attacks by Hamas militants.

Meanwhile, Spain's Open Arms aid ship, which was stationed in Larnaca and was awaiting permission to transport food aid from World Central Kitchen, a US charity founded by renowned chef Jose Andres, finally set sail. The boat carried 200 tonnes of rice, flour, and proteins for delivery to Gaza. Additionally, another 500 tonnes of aid are prepared in Cyprus for subsequent shipments.

Donald Trump-Joe Biden rivalry intensifies | Will Robert Kennedy Jr pay spoiler

Former US President Donald Trump reached out to entrepreneur and business magnate Elon Musk last summer, inquiring whether the Tesla CEO would want to purchase Truth Social, as per media reports citing people aware of the talks, which did not lead to a deal.

Truth Social is a social media platform that was announced by Trump in October 2021. It is aimed to offer an alternative to mainstream social media platforms, which some conservatives believe have censored their views.

Although the conversation that took place between the two didn't result in a deal, the Washington Post report also pointed out the extent of communication between the two influential figures. It said that Trump and Musk often had discussions on politics as well as business.

It must be noted that Trump often expresses his opinions and thoughts openly, sometimes without filters, which ends up stoking controversies. Musk, the owner of X, formerly Twitter, in November 2022 restored Trump's account on the platform nearly two years after the former US president was banned for inciting violence.

Now, even as Trump does not post on X, he continues to use Truth Social, where he frequently communicates his views directly to his followers.

Meet between Trump and Musk

The report, which indicated a continuing relationship between Trump and Musk, said that there was a meeting between the two earlier this month, along with some Republican donors in Palm Beach, Florida. Although the details of their discussions remain undisclosed.

It is worth mentioning that Musk's political views and affiliations are not strictly aligned with either conservatives or Democrats. He has described himself as a 'socialist' in the past.

Even as Musk has made donations to both Republican and Democratic candidates in the past, this time the SpaceX CEO, after his meeting with Trump, wrote on X, "Just to be super clear, I am not donating money to either candidate for US President."

Ex-Donald Trump adviser Peter Navarro has been ordered to report to prison this month, his lawyers said in a court filing, which could make him the first senior member of the former president's administration to do so for efforts to overturn his 2020 defeat.

Navarro, who served as Trump's trade adviser, is due on March 19 to begin his four-month sentence for defying a subpoena from the U.S. House of Representatives committee that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack, his lawyers revealed in a court filing late on Sunday.

They are asking a federal appeals court in Washington to pause the sentence while Navarro appeals his conviction. His defence team indicated they would ask the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene if his request is denied.

Navarro, 74, was found guilty of contempt of Congress last September for refusing to turn over documents or sit for an interview with the Democratic-led House committee that investigated the Capitol riot, a failed attempt by Trump supporters to overturn Trump’s defeat in the 2020 election. He was sentenced in January.

Navarro, a China hawk who also advised Trump on the response to the COVID pandemic, has claimed Trump invoked the legal doctrine of executive privilege, which shields some presidential records and communications from disclosure.

A federal judge found that Trump had not formerly invoked the privilege.

Steve Bannon, a onetime top strategist to Trump, was also sentenced to four months in prison for defying a subpoena from the Jan. 6 panel, but a judge has allowed him to remain free while he appeals.

The US Army has been actively replenishing stocks sent to Ukraine, making substantial purchases of munitions and vehicles. The last drawdown occurred in December 2023, depleting funds designated for replenishing stocks to zero.

Facing resistance from Republican hardliners, the White House is exploring alternative avenues, including the possibility of using the immobilised $285 billion in Russian assets from 2022 to finance Ukraine weaponry.

Poland's president and prime minister are set to meet President Joe Biden later on Tuesday to discuss ways to bolster support for Ukraine. The urgency to send more military assistance has prompted the Biden administration to use returned funds to replenish stocks, creating a narrow window for urgent aid deployment while waiting for supplemental funding from lawmakers.

Biden, advocating for military aid to Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, faces challenges from Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson, who has refused to call a vote on a $60 billion bill for Ukraine, despite its approval in the Democratic-run Senate.

Intelligence agencies have urgently pressed the House to approve additional military assistance, emphasising its role not only in supporting Kyiv against Russia but also in discouraging Chinese aggression.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky recently reported an improvement in the country's strategic position, with Russian troops no longer advancing after the capture of Avdiivka.

However, Zelensky warned of a potential new offensive by Russia in late May or summer and stressed the need for continued military support.
