A United States government research team probing a group of federal employees claiming symptoms of the "Havana syndrome" ailment that first emerged in 2016 did not find any conclusive evidence of brain injury, according to a study published in a medical journal on Monday (Mar 18).

Researchers from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) also discovered no changes in most clinical measures between a set of 86 employees and their adult family members reporting unexpected health events and a matched group of healthy volunteers who had similar work assignments.

Symptoms of the enigmatic ailment were for the very first time reported by United States embassy officials in Havana, Cuba, later affecting diplomats, spies, and other personnel across the globe.

These included hearing noise and experiencing head pressure followed by headaches, migraines, dizziness, and memory lapses.

"These individuals have symptoms that are real, distressing and very difficult to treat," Dr Leighton Chan, NIH Clinical Center acting chief scientific officer and lead study author, said according to news agency Reuters.

The participants of the study included military personnel stationed in China, Vienna, Cuba, and the United States. They undertook a battery of tests including clinical, auditory, balance, visual, neuropsychological and blood testing.

They also additionally received various types of MRI scans aimed at examining the volume, structure and function of the brain.

Researchers at the NIH did discover that over 25 per cent of patients who reported symptoms went on to acquire persistent postural-perceptual dizziness, a chronic illness. They also reported noticeably higher levels of fatigue, post-traumatic stress and depression as compared to the control group.

The results of the MRI brain imaging study "should be some reassurance for patients," said Louis French, the study's investigator and deputy director of the National Intrepid Center of Excellence at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, as he said that the researchers did not find a correlation between odd symptoms and neurodegenerative changes.

“The post-traumatic stress and mood symptoms reported are not surprising given the ongoing concerns of many of the participants,” he said.

The US State Department on Monday (Mar 18) said that it was reviewing the NIH report and that Secretary of State Antony Blinken's primary concern with regard to what the department calls anomalous health incidents (AHI) was the health, safety and security of personnel and family members.

"The Secretary remains resolute in ensuring that the Department does everything possible to ensure employees and family members who report an AHI are treated with respect and compassion and receive timely access to medical care and all benefits to which they are entitled," a spokesperson said by email.

The emergence of a deadly virus in the Colorado River of southern California has sparked significant concern among researchers and pet owners alike. According to a report by the New York Post, the virus in question is Heterobilharzia americana, colloquially known as a liver fluke. While previously documented in regions like Texas, its presence in California signifies a troubling westward expansion, posing a dire threat to both animal health and environmental stability.

Heterobilharzia americana is notorious for inducing a life-threatening condition in dogs known as schistosomiasis. This parasite is typically contracted when dogs come into contact with freshwater habitats inhabited by infected snails, a common occurrence during activities such as swimming or wading.

Research efforts and alarming findings

Responding to reports of infected dogs in the area, a team of researchers from UC Riverside embarked on a comprehensive investigation. Between March and August 2023, they meticulously examined 2,000 snails along the banks of the Colorado River, uncovering unsettling truths: the parasite's prevalence in the region far exceeded previous estimations.

Centuries-old artefacts which were looted following the Battle of Okinawa during World War II have been recovered and returned to Japan, said the FBI. The 22 historic artefacts were discovered in an attic by a family in Massachusetts, United States among their late father’s personal belongings.

‘Substantial piece of Okinawan history’

The Boston division of the FBI said that they recovered 22 artefacts which date back to the 18th and 19th centuries which had been lost for almost 80 years and represent a substantial piece of Okinawan history.

The recovery followed a lengthy investigation which began in January 2023 after the FBI received a call from a family which said that they found what appeared to be valuable Asian art in their late father’s personal effects, said the US federal law enforcement agency in a statement.

The 22 artefacts also included a hand-drawn map of Okinawa from the 19th century, and various pieces of pottery and ceramics, according to officials.

“When taken together, they really represent a substantial piece of Okinawan history,” said Geoffrey Kelly, special agent and art theft coordinator at FBI Boston.

The family, who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed that their father was a World War II veteran but never served in the Pacific Theater.

The family had alerted the authorities after checking the FBI’s National Stolen Art File and found that at least four of the scrolls discovered had been listed in their database about 20 years ago. The US federal law enforcement agency was able to authenticate the artwork.

The World War II Battle of Okinawa was fought between the US and Japanese forces on the island which was said to be the largest of the Ryukyu Islands. During the battle, many important documents and treasures of the Ryukyu Kingdom were taken, according to officials.

A typewritten letter, which was found with the artefacts helped confirm they were looted during the last days of World War II.

About the 22 artefacts

The artefacts included six painted scrolls – three of which were one piece that appeared to have been divided into three pieces – and revealed “portraits of Okinawan royalty in vivid reds, golds, and blue accents,” said the FBI.

Kelly noted that these artefacts were important since they depict Okinawan royalty and are a piece of their cultural identity.

“A nation’s cultural identity is really summed up in the artefacts and the history. This is what makes a culture. And without it, you’re taking away their history. And the surest way to eliminate a culture is to eliminate their past,” said the art crime coordinator for FBI Boston.

The official handover of the artefacts took place on Friday (Mar 15) and was confirmed by Governor of Okinawa Prefecture Denny Tamaki.

FBI returns 22 historic artefacts to Japan looted after Battle of Okinawa found in Massachusetts home

Swiss banking powerhouse UBS is eyeing potential merger and acquisition opportunities in the United States in the coming years, according to remarks made by its chairman to the NZZ newspaper on Sunday.

Colm Kelleher stated that UBS, having recently absorbed former rival Credit Suisse, aims to bolster its US wealth-management arm through strategic M&A endeavors within the next three to four years.

Kelleher emphasised that such expansion plans are targeted specifically within the realm of wealth management.

The decision to focus on wealth management comes amidst scrutiny over UBS's substantial balance sheet, which now surpasses $1.6 trillion—nearly double the size of the Swiss economy.

This notable increase in scale has prompted regulatory concerns in Switzerland regarding the oversight of systemically important banks.

Despite calls for UBS to adhere to higher capital requirements in light of its size, Kelleher expressed reservations, suggesting that excessive capitalisation could negatively impact shareholders and customers alike by increasing banking costs.

Following the merger with Credit Suisse, UBS witnessed the return of former CEO Sergio Ermotti for a second stint at the helm.

Kelleher hailed Ermotti as the ideal candidate for the "Herculean task" of integrating Credit Suisse into UBS's operations.

Furthermore, Kelleher indicated a preference for Ermotti's successor to be selected from within UBS, underlining a commitment to internal talent and continuity within the organisation's leadership.

UBS's strategic outlook reflects a proactive approach to navigating the evolving landscape of global banking, particularly in the United States.

With a focus on expanding its wealth-management business and leveraging synergies from the Credit Suisse merger, the bank aims to reinforce its position as a major player in the competitive US financial market.
