Protesters put up giant Palestinian flag at venue of Biden's White House event

More than 100 protesters were detained from the Northeastern University campus in Boston, on Saturday (Apr 27) morning as the police moved to break up the encampments set up by the pro-Palestinian demonstrators on campus.

What happened?

The move comes after the protesters resorted to “virulent anti-Semitic slurs, including ‘Kill the Jews,’ crossed the line,” said the university in a statement, on X.

It added, “We cannot tolerate this kind of hate on our campus.” Meanwhile, local media reported that the students had been preparing for the raid overnight as police had been gathering inside the campuses’ Shillman Hall earlier this morning.

Subsequently, as the police marched towards protesters telling them to go home, they remained defiant and the chants just kept getting louder, reported NBC10 Boston.

According to the Massachusetts State Police, 102 people were arrested and will face trespassing and disorderly conduct charges.

The police also said those detained are being transferred to Suffolk County House of Correction to be booked and processed.

“What began as a student demonstration two days ago was infiltrated by professional organizers with no affiliation to Northeastern,” said the university.

It also ensured that those who had a valid school ID were released and would face disciplinary proceedings and not legal action, said the school. However, those who “refused to disclose their affiliation were arrested,” it added.

Meanwhile, Northeastern sophomore Alina Caudle told NBC10 Boston that the anti-war protest was peaceful and organised by students.

“It shouldn’t be a partisan issue, it should be simple. We don’t want innocent lives to be lost,” said Caudle.

Nightclub dispute turns violent as six shot in Washington DC, one suspect arrested

Archaeologists made a significant discovery, earlier this week, at the first United States President George Washington’s home at Mount Vernon. They unearthed two glass jars while excavating the cellar, which holds 250-year-old preserved cherries.

‘Forgotten bottles’

Amid an ongoing revitalisation project at Mount Vernon, archaeologists found two dark green glass bottles which were sealed and each contained a liquid, said a statement by the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association (MVLA), a non-profit organisation that preserves and maintains Washington’s estate.

The bottles were found in the historic mansion’s cellar and each of them was full of cherries which are said to be more than two centuries old.

It is also believed that the bottles were recovered from a “pit where they may have been forgotten and eventually buried beneath a brick floor laid in the 1770s,” said the statement from Mount Vernon.

After the discovery, the intact bottles were transported to Mount Vernon’s archaeology lab for further research where they were opened and unsealed.

Researchers also determined that removing the liquid would stabilise the glass that has not been exposed to the atmosphere for around two centuries.

What did the bottles contain?

Mount Vernon’s principal archaeologist, Jason Boroughs, told USA Today that the 250-year-old cherries actually looked like cherries and were described as having flesh, pits and stems. He also said that the liquid inside smelled like cherry blossoms.

The cherries, as per the team at Mount Vernon, “bore the characteristic scent of cherry blossoms familiar to residents of the region during the spring season.”

However, the research team working at Washington’s estate is not entirely sure about what that liquid is. Meanwhile, Boroughs said that the cherries may have been picked by enslaved labourers sometime between 1758 and 1776 and preserved this way so that they could be eaten later.

“There are 18th-century accounts that talk about proper ways of preserving fruits and vegetables,” he told the Washington Post.

The researchers also speculated that the bottles’ contents could be remnants of Washington’s drink of choice, Cherry Bounce. The drink was reportedly made with brandy, spice, sugar and cherry juice. However, the drink was said to be stored in bigger bottles, so it seems unlikely and the theory was later ruled out by the team.

The bottles “can provide us with valuable insight and perspective into 18th-century lives at Mount Vernon,” said Boroughs.

He added, “These bottles have the potential to enrich the historic narrative, and we’re excited to have the contents analyzed so we can share this discovery with fellow researchers and the visiting public.”

From coast to coast, the Universities in the United States are increasingly resembling a battleground. Students have been protesting against the Israel's war in Gaza and expressing solidarity with the Palestinians. A movement that began on the 17th of April with only 70 students at Columbia University in the New York city has gone from strength to strength despite threats of suspension and arrest. More than a dozen Universities & Institutes have joined the spreading protests, with Columbia University remaining the epicenter of this student protest movement. Large-scale arrests have been carried out by the police in Universities across the country. Chemical irritants and tasers have been employed to disperse students. But the students have remained steadfast in their demand that their institutions divest from companies that are enabling the brutal war in Gaza. Though this isn't the first time that University students in the U.S. have staged protests on campus, the crackdown on the student encampments have been particularly harsh this time. Mohammed Saleh brings you the details.

Taiwan has reported new Chinese military activity near the island on Saturday (Apr 27) with 12 Chinese aircraft crossing the median line of the Taiwan Strait, just a day after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken left after his visit to China.

Taiwan, a self-ruled democracy, lacks formal diplomatic ties with the US, it remains America's key international supporter and arms importer.

During his visit to China, US Secretary of State Blinken emphasised the vital need for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. This comes as China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory, ramps up military pressure on the island, a claim Taiwan vehemently rejects.

Taiwan's defence ministry said that from 9:30 a.m. (0130 GMT) on Saturday it had detected 22 Chinese military aircraft, including Su-30 fighters, of which 12 had crossed the median line to Taiwan's north and centre.

It is worth mentioning that the median line in the Taiwan Strait once acted as an unspoken barrier, respected by both China and Taiwan. However, China's air force now routinely conducts flights across this line, despite denying its legitimacy.

Trump challenged Biden to a debate, expressing openness to various formats, including one in a courthouse. Despite skipping GOP candidate debates earlier, he's keen on debating Biden before the 2024 election.

"Crooked Joe Biden just announced that he’s willing to debate! Everyone knows he doesn’t really mean it, but in case he does, I say, ANYWHERE, ANYTIME, ANYPLACE, an old expression used by Fighters," Trump posted on Truth Social.

"I suggest Monday Evening, Tuesday Evening, or Wednesday Evening at my Rally in Michigan, a State that he is in the process of destroying with his E.V. Mandate," he further wrote.

During an interview with radio host Howard Stern on Friday, Biden stated that he is willing to debate Trump.

If the proposed dates are not feasible, Trump suggested holding the debate at the New York courthouse where he is facing trial for allegedly falsifying business records to conceal hush-money payments to a former Playboy Playmate and an adult film actress before the 2016 election.

"In the alternative, he’s in New York City today, although probably doesn’t know it, and so am I, stuck in one of the many Court cases that he instigated as ELECTION INTERFERENCE AGAINST A POLITICAL OPPONENT - A CONTINUING WITCH HUNT! It’s the only way he thinks he can win," Trump wrote.

"In fact, let’s do the Debate at the Courthouse tonight - on National Television, I’ll wait around!", he added.

Trump previously stated he's willing to campaign from the courthouse, seeing it as feasible.

He's using his New York trial to raise campaign funds, occasionally giving short speeches at news conferences. Trump will spend four days a week in court for several weeks.

On Friday(April 26), New York prosecutors announced that they had given back 30 antiquities to Cambodia and Indonesia. These artefacts, which were illegally obtained and traded by American networks of dealers and traffickers, were estimated to be worth a total of $3 million.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg stated that in two recent ceremonies, 27 pieces were returned to Phnom Penh and three to Jakarta. Among the returned items were a bronze statue of the Hindu god Shiva (known as the "Shiva Triad"), taken from Cambodia, and a stone bas-relief depicting two royal figures from the Majapahit empire (dating from the 13th to 16th century), which was stolen from Indonesia.

Bragg accused Subhash Kapoor, an Indian-American art dealer, and American Nancy Wiener of involvement in the illegal trafficking of antiquities.

Kapoor, alleged to have operated a network trafficking stolen items from Southeast Asia for sale in his Manhattan gallery, has been under investigation by US authorities for over ten years under the name "Hidden Idol."

Arrested in Germany in 2011, Kapoor was extradited to India, where he was tried and sentenced to 13 years in prison in November 2022.

Despite facing charges in the US for conspiracy to traffic stolen art, Kapoor denied any wrongdoing.

"We are continuing to investigate the wide-ranging trafficking networks that... target Southeast Asian antiquities," Bragg said in the statement.

"There is clearly still much more work to do."

Wiener, convicted in 2021 for trafficking stolen art, attempted to sell the bronze Shiva but eventually donated it to the Denver Museum of Art in 2007.

The antiquity was confiscated by New York courts in 2023.

Under Bragg's leadership, the Antiquities Trafficking Unit has recovered nearly 1,200 items stolen from over 25 countries, valued at more than $250 million.

New York serves as a major hub for trafficking, with various works seized in recent years from institutions such as the prestigious Metropolitan Museum of Art and from private collectors.
