The Meta stock price took a bit of a beating dropping nearly about 13% after the company's earnings report. Investors were spooked by Meta's increased focus on artificial intelligence and the significant spending that is required for this ambitious plan. The CEO Mark Zuckerberg emphasized the long-term potential of AI but has cautioned that these Investments would not translate into immediate revenue and this lack of short-term Financial gains has spooked investors wiping nearly $170 billion of Meta's market value.

The United States President and Presumptive Democratic Presidential candidate Joe Biden, on Friday (Apr 26) said that he would participate in a debate with his predecessor and Republican opponent in the upcoming election Donald Trump.

‘I’m happy to debate him’

This is the first time that Biden signalled that he is willing to debate Trump ahead of the upcoming elections as well as the clearest yet on the prospect of a presidential debate.

“I am, somewhere. I don’t know when,” said the incumbent president during an hour-long interview with broadcaster Howard Stern. Biden added, “I’m happy to debate him.”

This comes as Biden has not previously committed to debate Trump. Last month, the incumbent US president said that his commitment to a debate with his predecessor “depends on his behavior”.

Similarly, when asked about the debate during a trip to Nevada in February, Biden said “If I were him, I’d want him to debate me, too. He’s got nothing else to do.”

‘ANYWHERE, ANYTIME, ANYPLACE’

In response to Biden’s interview, Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social and wrote, “Crooked Joe Biden just announced that he’s willing to debate! Everyone knows he doesn’t really mean it, but in case he does, I say ANYWHERE, ANYTIME, ANYPLACE…”

It is worth noting that the former president has refused to debate his rivals before winning the Republican primary race last month. However, given his latest post it seems like he is eager for a one-on-one match with his successor.

Biden and Trump had last faced each other in two televised presidential election debates in 2020.

Earlier this month, a dozen leading American news organisations urged candidates to publicly commit to debating each other. The statement suggests that debates for the current race be sponsored by the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates.

However, Trump and the GOP have had a turbulent relationship with the nonpartisan group that has organised general election debates since 1988.

In 2022, the Republican National Committee (RNC) unanimously voted to ban future GOP presidential nominees from participating in debates organised by the committee, while then-RNC chair Ronna McDaniel called the Commission “biased”.

Meanwhile, the Biden campaign is reportedly concerned that once on stage Trump will not abide by rules set by the Commission, while some of the incumbent president’s advisers said they prefer not to elevate Trump by putting him on the same stage as Biden.

The US Economy grew at its slowest pace in nearly two years in the first three months of 2024. A surge in imports and a small build-up of unsold goods at businesses, together with an acceleration in inflation, reinforced expectations that the federal reserve would not cut interest rates before September.

The US troops have started construction of a maritime pier off the coast of Gaza that aims to speed the flow of humanitarian aid into the enclave when it becomes operational in May.

In March, President Joe Biden announced the construction of a pier to aid in the delivery of humanitarian supplies to Gaza, responding to aid officials' requests for Israel to relax restrictions on land routes.

However, it's uncertain if this initiative will effectively boost the flow of aid, especially as international officials caution about the potential for famine in northern Gaza. Israel's six-month-long military campaign against Hamas has caused extensive damage to the densely populated Gaza Strip, leaving its 2.3 million residents in a humanitarian crisis.

A Biden administration official, speaking to reporters on condition of anonymity, said humanitarian aid coming off the pier will need to pass through Israeli checkpoints on land. That is despite the aid having already been inspected by Israel in Cyprus prior to being shipped to Gaza. Israel wants to prevent any aid from getting to Hamas fighters that boosts their war effort.

The possibility of checkpoints brings up concerns about potential delays, even after aid has landed. The United Nations has consistently voiced concerns about the difficulties in getting aid into Gaza and distributing it throughout the territory.

"I can confirm that US military vessels, to include the USNS Benavidez, have begun to construct the initial stages of the temporary pier and causeway at sea," Pentagon spokesperson Major General Patrick Ryder told reporters.

The pier will at first handle 90 trucks a day, but that number could go up to 150 trucks daily when it is fully operational. The United Nations said this week that the daily average number of trucks entering Gaza during April was 200 and that there had been a peak on Monday of 316.

The northern Gaza Strip remains at risk of famine, the UN deputy food chief said on Thursday (Apr 25), urging for an increased flow of aid and asking Israel to permit direct access from its southern Ashdod port to the Erez crossing.

In a statement, the Israeli military said it would provide security and logistics support for the pier.

An Israeli military brigade, which includes thousands of soldiers, along with Israeli Navy ships and Air Force would work to protect US troops who are setting up the pier.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Friday (Apr 26) that his nation has seen evidence of China's interference in the US elections despite earlier commitments by Chinese President Xi Jinping not to do so. “We have seen, generally speaking, evidence of attempts to influence and arguably interfere, and we want to make sure that that’s cut off as quickly as possible,” Blinken said in an interview with CNN.

“Any interference by China in our election is something that we’re looking very carefully at and is totally unacceptable to us, so I wanted to make sure that they heard that message again,” he added.

Last November, during a summit between Xi and US President Joe Biden, China had promised not to take any action that might impact the democratic election process in the US presidential elections.

Xi Jinping met Blinken in Beijing on Friday (Apr 26), state media reported.

Xi told Blinken that the world's two biggest economies should be partners, not rivals, but there were numerous issues to be resolved in their relations.

Xi met Blinken in Beijing's Great Hall of the People on Friday (Apr 26) and said the two countries had made some positive progress since he met with US President Joe Biden last year, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

"There are still various issues that need to be resolved, and further efforts are still needed," Xi said.

"I proposed three major principles: mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation," Xi further added.

"China would be happy to see a prosperous and developing United States," the Chinese leader said.

Talking about their relations, he said, “When this fundamental problem is solved, relations can truly stabilise, get better, and move forward. We hope the US can also take a positive view of China's development.”

Blinken earlier held a meeting with counterpart Wang Yi for more than five and a half hours, which the US diplomat called extensive and constructive.

During the meeting, Antony Blinken expressed concern about China's support for Russia.

State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said, "Blinken discussed concerns about PRC support to the Russian defence industrial base along with issues relating to Taiwan, the South China Sea, and the Middle East, referring to China by its official acronym."

During the opening session, Wang remarked to Blinken that the great ship of US-China relations had been stable, but negative factors in the relationship were still on the rise.

"The relationship is facing all kinds of disruptions. China's legitimate development rights have been unreasonably suppressed and our core interests are facing challenges," he said.

Blinken replied that active diplomacy was needed to move forward with the agenda set by President Joe Biden and President Xi Jinping when they met in San Francisco in November.

"There's no substitute in our judgement for face-to-face diplomacy," Blinken said, adding that he wanted to ensure that "we're as clear as possible about the areas where we have differences, at the very least to avoid misunderstandings, to avoid miscalculations".

Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Friday (Apr 26) that his nation has seen evidence of China's interference in the US elections despite earlier commitments by Chinese President Xi Jinping not to do so.

Xi-Blinken meeting Xi Jinping met Blinken in Beijing on Friday (Apr 26), state media reported. A large study investigating mortality differences based on sexual orientation reveals that bisexual women face a 37 per cent higher risk of premature death compared to heterosexual women, while lesbian women have a 20 per cent higher risk.

This study, distinguishing between lesbian and bisexual women for the first time, sheds light on longstanding health disparities among sexual minority women.

While previous research documented health inequalities between sexual minority women and heterosexual women, limited research has explored mortality differences, especially among various subgroups within the sexual minority community.

The latest research, led by scientists from Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute along with Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, University of Utah, Boston Children's Hospital, and Columbia University, highlights major health gaps that result in significant differences in death rates.

Sarah McKetta, the main researcher and a Research Fellow at the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute, stresses the urgent importance of tackling preventable reasons behind the differences in health based on sexual orientation. This is especially crucial given the increasingly unwelcoming policies towards LGBTQ people in the US

Dr McKetta also points out that LGBTQ individuals encounter specific types of discrimination and prejudice, which can lead to various negative effects. These societal challenges result in long-term stress and harmful coping methods, making this group more prone to health problems and early death.

The study's ability to analyse results based on different sexual orientation groups is seen as a major strength by researchers. Brittany Charlton, a professor at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute, points out the unique challenges bisexual women face, both within and outside the LGBTQ community, due to biphobia.

Charlton also mentions that bisexual people often feel excluded from certain groups because others make assumptions about their sexuality based on their partner's gender.

The higher risk of early death among bisexual women is worrying, highlighting the need for specific actions to reduce these differences among all sexual minority groups.
