Russia has warned of freezing US assets in the country, including property and cash of US citizens and investors. This comes as senior Russian officials voice strong opposition to the bill allowing the confiscation of Russian assets. The kremlin deems such actions illegal and warns of retaliation should the US proceed. However, legal experts continue to debate the legitimacy of such measures, setting the stage for a complex diplomatic and legal standoff.

Australia’s newest low-cost airline Bonza, on Tuesday (Apr 30) suspended all flights and entered voluntary administration, regulatory filings showed amid concerns about the viability of its business and has potentially left thousands of passengers stranded.

About the collapse of the airline

The collapse of the Australian airline came around 15 months after Bonza launched its services with the backing of 777 Partners, a United States-based investment firm.

In a statement, the budget carrier said that it suspended all services for the day amid discussions about the “ongoing viability of the business”. It also apologised to the customers who have been impacted by the decision.

“We apologise to our customers who are impacted by this and we’re working as quickly as possible to determine a way forward that ensures there is ongoing competition in the Australian domestic aviation market,” said CEO Tim Jordan.

Bonza launched its services last year and has been the first to enter the market in Australia since 2007.

Notably, the market in Canberra is dominated by Qantas and Virgin Australia, which together control about 90 per cent of Australia’s airline market, reported Reuters.

The budget airlines, before it suspended its operations, connected small regional airports across Australia to main cities like Melbourne and Gold Coast.

Bonza had sought to shake up the country’s competitive aviation sector with cut-price tickets. However, the airline has previously garnered criticism due to flight cancellations and the suspension of some routes.

Additionally, speculation was also rife about the Bonza’s future after its reported inability to secure access to take-off and landing spots in Sydney, which is said to be a lucrative market.

Cancellations and control of flights

The announcement prompted the Australian government to set up a hotline for passengers who have been affected.

Meanwhile, the country’s Transport Minister Catherine King said that she has also spoken to other airlines about helping those stranded and both Qantas and Virgin have agreed to offer assistance.

King also said the government’s priority is to ensure stranded Australians reach home safely and quickly.

A report by Reuters citing an anonymous source said AIP Capital had begun to take control of Bonza’s four Boeing 737-Max-8 aircraft just after midnight on Tuesday.

When asked if the government would bail out Bonza, King told state broadcaster ABC that the government’s role is to “ensure that we have a strong aviation sector within Australia” but bailing the airlines out “is not something that the government has before us.”

The judge overseeing Donald Trump’s historic criminal case fined the former United States president $9,000 after holding him in contempt of court for repeatedly violating a gag order that barred him from making public statements about witnesses, jurors and some others related to the ongoing trial.

Trump warned about jail time

The order by Justice Juan Merchan came as the proceedings in the trial resumed in Manhattan criminal court, on Tuesday (Apr 30). Earlier this month, prosecutors had alleged 10 violations of the gag order, but the judge found there were nine.

Trump, according to the Associated Press, has also been warned by the judge that if he violates the gag order again, he could be jailed.

In his written order, Merchan said that Trump “is hereby warned that the Court will not tolerate continued willful violations of its lawful orders and that if necessary and appropriate under the circumstances, it will impose an incarceratory punishment.”

He also noted that this fine may not be enough to serve as a deterrent for the former president, and lamented he did not have the authority to impose a higher penalty.

The judge has also ordered Trump to remove seven statements from his Truth Social account and two from his campaign website by 2:15 pm (local time).

Merchan said he would consider whether to impose additional fines at a hearing on Thursday (May 2). The former president has been fined $1,000 for each of nine online statements that the judge said violated the order.

Last month, the judge imposed a gag order on Trump on the prosecutors’ request to block him from speaking about the witnesses.

The order was later expanded to include his own family members and those of the Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, a Democrat who brought the charges against the former president.

Proceedings on Tuesday

The court on Tuesday will reportedly begin with testimony from a banker who is said to be familiar with the former president’s accounts and the alleged scheme to pay hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels and falsifying business records to cover the payments.

Banker Gary Farro, who has not been accused of wrongdoing, reportedly helped Trump’s former attorney Michael Cohen open accounts, including one that was used to pay hush money to Daniels.

‘TRUMP 24’

Trump is the first former US president to face a criminal trial, which began on April 22 after the selection of the jury. But he is also the presumptive Republican candidate for the upcoming presidential election and campaigning when he is not in court.

On Tuesday morning, around two dozen supporters rallied outside the courthouse chanting and waving banners that read “TRUMP 24,” reported Reuters.

The hush money case is one of the four criminal cases against Trump, but the only one which went to trial and will result in a verdict ahead of the November elections.

Jareh Sebastian Dalke, a 32-year-old who briefly worked for the National Security Agency (NSA), was sentenced to over 21 years in prison on Monday (Apr 29) for trying to spy for Russia, the Justice Department said.

While being employed at the NSA for a short period, Dalke reportedly acquired classified documents. After leaving the agency, he allegedly attempted to sell them for $85,000 to someone he believed was a Russian agent, according to court documents.

He was actually dealing with an undercover FBI agent.

Dalke pleaded guilty in October in US District Court to six counts of attempting to transmit classified national defence information to an agent of a foreign government.

"This defendant, who had sworn an oath to defend our country, believed he was selling classified national security information to a Russian agent, when in fact, he was outing himself to the FBI," Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement.

"This sentence demonstrates that those who seek to betray our country will be held accountable for their crimes."

What classified information did Dalke try to sell?

As stated in the indictment, the information Dalke intended to provide to Russia involved a threat assessment of the military capabilities of an undisclosed third country.

It also included details about sensitive US defence capabilities, some of which pertained to the same foreign nation.

The terms of the plea deal stipulate that Dalke must cooperate with authorities, sharing truthful and valuable insights into his actions and their consequences.

India has strongly refuted claims made by The Washington Post that an Indian intelligence officer planned the assassination of US-based Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. New Delhi has asserted that these accusations lack evidence.

A report published in The Washington Post on Sunday (Apr 28) alleged US intelligence agencies have found that the operation to kill Pannun was approved by Samant Goel, the then chief of India's spy agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW).

"The report makes unwarranted and unsubstantiated accusation on a serious matter," Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.

"There is an ongoing investigation of the high-level committee set up by the government of India to look into the security concerns shared by the US government on networks of organised criminals, terrorists, and others," Jaiswal further said.

“A government committee is actively investigating the security concerns raised by the United States regarding organised crime networks, terrorist groups, and other threats," said Jaiswal.

He further said, “speculative and irresponsible comments on the ongoing investigation won’t be of any help.”

Assassination allegations

The US Department of Justice charged an Indian citizen in connection with an alleged assassination plot. The indictment, filed in a Manhattan federal court, alleges that an unnamed Indian government official (referred to as CC-1) recruited Nikhil Gupta, an Indian national, to hire a hitman. The target, described as a Sikh separatist leader residing in the US, was never harmed due to US intervention.

Canada has also alleged that Indian government agents were involved in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia.

The United States announced that five Israeli military units had committed grave human rights violations against Palestinians in the West Bank before Hamas launched its assault in the month of October, said the State Department on Monday (Apr 29).

State Department deputy spokesman Vedant Patel said that four out of these five units had taken remedial measures, however, consultations were underway over the fifth unit with the Israeli government.

"After a careful process, we found five Israeli units responsible for individual incidents of gross violations of human rights," Patel said.

Patel said that the violations took place before the Oct 7 Hamas assault and that it was not in the Gaza Strip.

He did not identify the units or specify the measures the Israeli government had taken against them.

As per the news agency AFP, press reports identified a battalion called the Netzah Yehuda comprised mainly of ultra-Orthodox Jews, as the one that was accused of abuses.

US law prohibits the government from funding or arming foreign security forces that have credible allegations of human rights abuses against them.

Blinken 'hopeful' Hamas will accept Gaza deal

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday said that he was hopeful Palestinian militant group Hamas would accept an "extraordinarily generous" offer to end the Israeli offensive in Gaza in exchange for the release of hostages.

"Hamas has before it a proposal that is extraordinarily, extraordinarily generous on the part of Israel," Blinken said in Riyadh at the World Economic Forum.

"In this moment, the only thing standing between the people of Gaza and a ceasefire is Hamas," he said.

"They have to decide -- and they have to decide quickly," Blinken said. "I'm hopeful that they will make the right decision."

"We can have a fundamental change in the dynamic" in more than half a year of bloodshed, Blinken said.

The United States has severely denounced Iraq over its new bill criminalising same-sex relationships stating that the new law "threatens those most at risk" in Iraqi society.

US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller, in a statement, warned that the amendment to the 1988 anti-prostitution law could be used to "hamper free speech and expression".

He further said that it would "weaken Iraq's ability to diversify its economy and attract foreign investment."

"We are deeply concerned by the passage of an amendment to existing anti-prostitution and homosexuality legislation in Iraq. This amendment threatens those most at risk in Iraqi society and weakens Iraq’s ability to diversify its economy and attract foreign investment," he wrote in a post on his official X account.

He further said that international business coalitions had already indicated that such discrimination in Iraqi society would harm businesses and economic growth in the country.

A couple in the US state of Utah was reunited with its pet cat, Galena after she was accidentally shipped all the way to California inside an Amazon return package. The cat, which luckily survived the days-long ordeal, was missing for around a week before being discovered by an Amazon warehouse worker.

How did this happen?

Galena, an indoor-only cat, travelled all the way from Lehi, Utah, across the United States to Riverside, California which is more than 1,046 kilometres after she snuck into a box. The pet cat was reported missing by her owner Carrie Clark.

It is also worth noting that the cat survived six days of travel with no food or water but was thankfully found by an Amazon worker named Brandy Hunter.

Hunter took Galena to a vet where she was scanned for a microchip which alerted Clark of her cat’s whereabouts.

The couple from Utah had reported Galena missing on April 10. But as it turns out their pet cat had jumped into one of the packages undetected. “That was the worst part, we just had no idea what happened,” she told NBC affiliate KSL News.

She added, “She just mysteriously disappeared. We had absolutely no idea what happened to her.”

In a post on Facebook, Clark described her cat as a “super shy indoor cat,” saying that she is a “part of our family and has never been gone this long before.”

Over the days, Clark was slowly losing hope of finding her beloved companion, but around a week later she and her husband Matt received a shocking alert from the cat’s microchip which said that she had been found somewhere near Los Angeles.

‘Most amazing, insane news’

After Galena’s microchip was scanned, Clark’s contact information appeared and the vet called her and explained how the cat ended up in California. It was “the most amazing, insane news in the entire world,” she told KSL News.

In an update on Facebook, Clark said that Galena had “miraculously survived without water and food for six days…(and) her bloodwork was completely normal!!” She added, “Despite being much skinnier she is completely unharmed!”
