Grace Harris returned to bail UP Warriorz out of trouble in yet another crunch run chase, this time against Gujarat Giants by three wickets in WPL 2023. The first of the double-header on Monday saw UP Warriorz becoming the third team to qualify for the playoffs after Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals. Alyssa Healy-led UP side showed nerves of steel as they crossed the line on the penultimate delivery.

Electing to bat first after winning the toss, Gujarat openers Sophia Dunkley and Laura Wolvaardt added 41 runs for the first wicket before UP struck back with three quick scalps inside two overs. The fortunes then changed for Giants when Dayalan Hemalatha and Ashleigh Gardner took the onus and the attack to the opposition. This pair stitched a 93-run stand that saw both completing half-centuries, with the Indian batter scoring 57 off 33 balls, whereas the Aussie star batter completed 60 from 39 balls, hitting six fours and three sixes.

While Harris didn’t put brakes on her acceleration, her wicket on the penultimate ball of the 19th over broke hearts inside the UP Warriorz dressing room. As the game went into the final, the drama unfolded as GG captain Sneh Rana dismissed Simran Shaikh.

However, Sophie Ecclestone kept her nerves and slammed one in the fine leg area to hand her team a big win by three wickets; more importantly guiding them to a playoff spot in the WPL 2023.

WPL 2023: UPW-W vs GG-W – Grace Harris’ 72 help UP Warriorz cruise past struggling Gujarat, seal playoffs spot

UP Warriroz Women (UPW-W) handed table toppers Mumbai Indians-Women (MI-W) their first loss of the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2023 as they beat MI by five wickets in a low-scoring thriller. Chasing a target of 128, Sophie Ecclestone hit a six on the third ball of the last over to take UPW home, handing them their third win in six games.

UP didn't have good start of the chase as they lost two wickets for 27 at the end of six overs with a third one coming on the first ball after the powerplay. Tahlia McGrath and Grace Harris then added 44 runs for the fourth wicket before McGrath was sent back for 38 off 25 by Amelia Kerr. Harris, however, stood tall and took UP score past 100 but fell at team score of 105 after scoring 39 off 28.

Deepti Sharma and Sophie Ecclestone then added rest of the runs and held their nerve as Mumbai valiantly took the game to the last over. For Mumbai, Amelia Kerr took two wickets for 22 in four overs. Nat-Sciver Brunt, Hayley Matthews, and Issy Wong each took a wicket to give Indians a fight chance, defending a low total of 127.

Earlier, asked to bat first after losing the toss, Mumbai Indians had a decent start with score reading 31/1 after powerplay. Although, UP spinners tightened the screw after that and kept taking wickets at regular intervals. Mumbai Indians reached their fifty in the 10th over only - showing how well UP women bowled.

Electing to bat first after winning the toss, Gujarat, unlike how they began in their WPL opener, got off to a lovely start with a new pair of Sabbhineni Meghana and Sophia Dunkley adding 34 for the first wicket. In absence of regular skipper Beth Mooney, India’s Harleen Deol decided to take the onus on herself and played rather quickly.

Although wickets kept tumbling at one end, Harleen stood her ground and kept pushing the scoring rate; she ended up scoring 46 off 32 balls. Later, with some assistance from Ashleigh Gardner and Dayalan Hemalatha, Gujarat piled up 169 for six in 20 overs.

UP Warriorz got off a shaky start on the flip side of it, losing three wickets inside the first three overs with all falling to Kim Garth. India’s Kiran Navgire impressed one and all with her stroke play as she completed her maiden WPL fifty. Then, two quick wickets in two overs pulled their momentum back, but as destiny had it’s way, it happened for a good reason.

Australian bowler Grace Harris then entered the scene and started hammering from ball one. The strength with which she hit seven boundaries and three sixes it looked like she could help her team cross the line. Partnering with Sophie Ecclestone, Grace took the game till the last over and won it for her side with one of the best chasing knocks seen in women's cricket lately.

With this win, UP Warriorz has claimed the all-important two points while Gujarat suffered successive defeat.
