The agreement between Russia and Ukraine to allow the passage of ships carrying food grains in the middle of the crisis was lauded by leaders all around the world. Pope Francis also joined in praising the departure of the ships from the Black Sea ports and said that it can be a “breakthrough” for dialogue that can eventually result in a long-term resolution. The pope has tried to bring the two countries on the discussion table, but no resolution seems likely at present for the ongoing invasion.

Pope Francis lauds departure of grain ships from Ukraine as 'sign of hope'

Russian occupation authorities at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station in Ukraine said on Sunday that an attack by Ukrainian forces had destroyed administrative buildings within the complex, as reported by AFP. The largest nuclear power plant in Europe, Zaporizhzhia, which Russia took control of early in its attack, has recently been the target of military operations that have resulted in the destruction of a number of structures and the forced shutdown of a reactor.

The head of the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), warned on Saturday of "the very real risk of a nuclear disaster" as Russia and Ukraine laid the blame for the strikes on one another. The projectiles from the attack, which was carried out by the Ukrainian army and launched from an Uragan rocket launcher, "fell within 400 metres of a working reactor," according to Russian occupation authorities in the city of Energodar, where the plant is located, on Sunday.

The strike occurred in a "zone storing used nuclear fuel" and caused damage to certain administrative buildings. It was impossible to independently verify the information. Since the beginning of their offensive, Russian forces have been occupying the Zaporizhzhia plant, and Kyiv has accused them of keeping heavy weaponry there.

The plant has been targeted, according to Moscow, by Ukrainian forces. The strikes that took place on Friday, according to the facility's operator in Ukraine, Energoatom, "caused a serious risk for the safe operation of the plant." Energoatom said on Saturday that the hits "seriously damaged" a station that contained nitrogen and oxygen as well as an auxiliary structure. They also damaged a power line and prompted one of the reactors to stop operating.

New strike on Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, say Russian authorities

It has been several months since the Russian invasion of Ukraine started, and scores of civilians have lost their lives in the conflict. Armies of both countries have been involved in intense fights since Russian troops entered Ukraine. Now, shelling hits Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

Fighting intensifies in Eastern Ukraine as shelling hits Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station in Ukraine sustained "serious damage" as a result of military operations that resulted in the forced shutdown of one of its reactors. Energoatom said on the messaging app Telegram that the strikes on Friday at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in south Ukraine—the largest of Europe's atomic power complex—"seriously damaged" a station housing nitrogen and oxygen as well as an "auxiliary building". Moscow and Kyiv laid blame on each other for the assault.

One of the reactors was forced to shut down due to the hits, a power line was broken, and "there are still concerns of leaking hydrogen and radioactive substances, and the risk of fire is still considerable," according to the statement. The shelling "has caused a serious risk for the safe operation of the plant."

Since the beginning of their incursion, Russian forces have been occupying the Zaporizhzhia plant, and Kyiv has accused them of keeping heavy weaponry there. Moscow, meanwhile, has charged Ukrainian soldiers with attacking the plant. On Saturday, the European Union criticised Russia for the bombardment.

The International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN's nuclear watchdog, must have access to the plant, urged Josep Borrell, the senior ambassador for the EU. For weeks, the IAEA has been attempting to deploy a team to inspect the plant. As of yet, Ukraine has rejected the initiatives since, in its opinion, they would give Russia's possession of the area legitimacy in the eyes of the international world. It said that while Ukrainian staff had stayed on and the plant was still producing energy, Rosatom employees had fled the facility just before the assaults.

Rafael Grossi, the UN nuclear chief has shot out a warning to the world leaders, stating that Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the largest nuclear power plant facility in Europe 'is completely out of control'.

Rafael Grossi, the UN nuclear chief has shot out a warning to the world leaders, stating that Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the largest nuclear power plant facility in Europe 'is completely out of control'. “Every principle of nuclear safety has been violated. What is at stake is extremely serious and extremely grave and dangerous,” said Grossi. Grossi pleaded with both Russia and Ukraine to allow nuclear experts to inspect the plant before anything catastrophic happens. The war has led to disruption in the supply chain. A working nuclear power plant requires a thousand moving pieces to work in perfect tandem every day to operate. However, the war means that spare parts and other important equipment might not be reaching the plant, according to Grossi. “When you put this together, you have a catalog of things that should never be happening in any nuclear facility. And this is why I have been insisting from day one that we have to be able to go there to perform this safety and security evaluation, to do the repairs and to assist as we already did in Chernobyl,” added Grossi. War, waged in the vicinity of nuclear plants, presents a grave danger to nuclear safety and security. At an #NPTRevCon side event I had the opportunity to explain the seven pillars, repeatedly violated as a consequence of war in #Ukraine. Thank you for the invite! pic.twitter.com/wHiQMR7Huk — Rafael MarianoGrossi (@rafaelmgrossi) August 2, 2022 × It is pertinent to note that the world's worst nuclear disaster, the 'Chernobyl Catastrophe' took place in Ukraine only, 110 kilometres away from the capital city of Kyiv. If another nuclear disaster takes place, it could practically affect the entire planet this time, forget only Europe. Concerned about the situation near the plant, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called Russia's actions "the height of irresponsibility." US is directly involved in Ukraine conflict, alleges Russia

The ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine has been devastating for the global economy with severe impacts on food security as well as the supply chain. With Ukraine amounting for a huge amount of food grain exports in the world, the crisis has resulted in a temporary stoppage of supply, and this has resulted in major food shortages. A report by World Bank confirmed on Monday that a number of developing countries are currently facing crippling food inflation and that has also resulted in price rises in richer countries. The report also stated that the situation can get even worse, and this can result in food bills across the world increasing by almost one per cent of their annual GDP.

“The share of high-income countries with high inflation has also increased sharply, with about 78.6% experiencing high food price inflation. The most-affected countries are in Africa, North America, Latin America, South Asia, Europe, and central Asia,” the report said according to The Guardian.

There was some respite for the world economy as Russia and Ukraine announced an understanding last week that will allow passage of ships carrying food grains. However, with the world already suffering from the effects of the pandemic, the recovery will take a significant amount of time.

According to the World Bank data, the worst victim of the food inflation was Lebanon who have been suffering since the explosion in Beirut. The incident resulted in loss of a significant amount of food grains and with the current invasion, the food scarcity has reached a completely new level.

Currently, the general inflation rate of the country remains above 150% amid food and fuel crisis.
