"Our position on the existence of only one China remains unchanged," Lavrov told reporters in Tashkent. "We have no problem with upholding the principle of China's sovereignty."

China considers Taiwan its own territory and has not ruled out use of force to take control of it. Chinese fighters have repeatedly entered Taiwan's Air Defence Zone in recent past.

The Kremlin echoed Lavrov's comments and expressed 'solidarity' with China.

"Certainly we are in solidarity," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

"We respect China's sovereignty and territorial integrity and believe that no country in the world should have the right to question this or take any inflammatory or other steps," he added.

"We are convinced that such behaviour on the international arena can only cause additional tension."

Russia expresses support for 'One China Policy' after Xi's tough talk to US on Taiwan

After Moscow accused Ukrainian attacks of killing dozens, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on Friday that Russian forces had earlier attacked a facility housing Ukrainian prisoners of war. "Russia has committed another petrifying war crime by shelling a correctional facility in occupied Olenivka where it held Ukrainian POWs. I call on all partners to strongly condemn this brutal violation of international humanitarian law and recognize Russia a terrorist state," Kuleba tweeted.

Earlier in the day, rebels supported by Moscow and Russia claimed that Kiev's forces had attacked an eastern Ukrainian prison holding Ukrainian prisoners of war, resulting in dozens of fatalities and numerous injuries. Ukraine denies launching attacks on prisoners of war or civilian infrastructure. According to information now available, Ukrainian forces used American HIMARS launch rocket systems to fire into a prison facility housing Azov battalion members, according to a statement from Russia's Investigative Committee, as reported by AFP.

A criminal investigation has been opened, according to the Investigative Committee, which typically handles severe crimes. The jail in Olenivka, in the portion of Donetsk controlled by the separatists, was reportedly targeted overnight, according to the Russian defence ministry. According to the defence ministry, there were 40 deceased and 75 injured Ukrainian prisoners of war, plus eight jail staff members.

U.S. President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping are expected to talk on Thursday, a source familiar with the planning said, with Taiwan and Russia's invasion of Ukraine expected to be key agenda items.

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby told reporters on Tuesday that managing economic competition between the two countries would also be a focus of the call.

It will be the fifth call between the leaders, and comes as China has delivered heightened warnings to the Biden administration about a possible visit by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to democratically governed Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its territory.

"Everything from the tensions over Taiwan, to the war in Ukraine, as well as how we better manage competition between our two nations, certainly in the economic sphere," Kirby said of the topics to be discussed.

"This is a call that has been scheduled for a long time and there's already a pretty robust agenda of things for these two leaders to talk about," he said.

Asked at a regular briefing on Wednesday in Beijing to confirm the call, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said he had no information to offer.

Under its one-China policy, the United States does not have official diplomatic relations with Taiwan, but is bound by U.S. law to provide the island with the means to defend itself. The White House has been quick to reiterate that stance has not changed despite speculation over a possible trip by Pelosi.

Kirby said that Pelosi is in the line of succession to the presidency and as such, her overseas travel was a matter of U.S. national security. But only she could make decisions about her travel.

"Bellicosity" in rhetoric from China over the possible trip only escalates tensions, he said.

"We find that unhelpful and certainly not in the least bit necessary given the situation," he said.

The administration has been debating whether to lift some tariffs on Chinese goods as a way to boost the U.S. economy, but Kirby said a decision was not expected ahead of the call.

The call comes as the U.S. Congress considers legislation known as the CHIPs act to provide about $52 billion in subsidies for the U.S. semiconductor industry, as well as an investment tax credit for chip plants estimated to be worth $24 billion, which Biden has urged as crucial for competing with China economically.

Biden referred to the planned call with Xi during virtual remarks urging passage of the legislation on Monday, telling reporters: "That's my expectation, but I'll let you know when that gets set up."

'Provocations'

The prospect of Pelosi's trip is only one in a long list of disagreements that have frayed U.S.-China relations.

Earlier on Tuesday, senior U.S. officials accused China of increased "provocations" against rival territorial claimants in the South China Sea and said "aggressive and irresponsible behaviour" by Chinese ships and aircraft meant it was only a matter of time before a major incident or accident.

A trip to Taiwan by Pelosi would be the first by a House speaker to the island since 1997, and China has said it is prepared to take strong measures in response.

Zhu Feng, dean of the Institute of International Studies at China's Nanjing University, said a Taiwan visit by Pelosi would be "playing with fire".

"This is the issue that irks China the most," he said.

"On the call, both sides need to give each other a positive signal that says we can have basic trust in each other, which is especially needed as the world remains fragile and volatile. Not condoning Pelosi's Taiwan visit is a prerequisite to building this trust," he said.

Asked about the possible visit, Taiwan Premier Su Tseng-chang said on Wednesday it welcomes any "friendly foreign guests" to visit the island. He did not elaborate.

Taiwan's foreign ministry has said it has not received any definite information regarding a Pelosi visit and has no comment on the matter.

Daniel Russel, who served as the top U.S. diplomat for Asia under former President Barack Obama, said the Taiwan issue had the makings of a real crisis, without any U.S.-China mechanism to prevent that from escalating into conflict.

He said it was not clear how much pressure the Biden administration was exerting on Pelosi, but Xi was likely to push hard on the issue in the call, and added: "We are in a high-risk moment and it behooves leaders in both countries to tread carefully."

Nonetheless, Craig Singleton, a senior China fellow at the Washington-based Foundation for Defense of Democracies, said Xi would likely seek to project calm as he faces a slowing economy under pressure from strict domestic COVID-19 measures ahead of a key Communist Party congress later this year.

"While Xi will be clear and direct in raising China's objections about Speaker Pelosi's trip, he will probably not allow that one issue to derail the entire conversation, as doing so would further complicate his already difficult governing agenda," Singleton said.

Recently the main reaction of the western countries has been to ship weapons to Ukraine no matter how much it made sense to make peace rather than war. While Ukraine continues to be turned into a wasteland, the continuation of war is profitable to the companies that manufacture weapons for the US, the UK and even Poland,&nbsp;who have been active in this direction.&nbsp;

I thought to share a few of these companies and how they relate to one another so that we at least have an idea of the real winners in the continuation of the Ukraine war.

Let us take the number one weapons manufacturer for the US being Lockheed Martin company for instance. Lockheed manufactures the famous anti-tank Javeline missiles that have been donated by the US to Ukraine. Around March this year Lockheed Martin was faced with increasing production of these in-demand weapons. The shareholders of this Lockheed include the following investors;

BlackRock Inc

Vanguard Group

But then who owns BlackRock? The shareholders of Blackrock include Vanguard Group. Well, who owns Vanguard Group you ask? The shareholders of Vanguard group include Blackrock Inc. Quite a matrix.

Interestingly also the number one weapon manufacturer in the UK is BAE Systems Plc whose shareholders also include BlackRock above, Capital Group company etc.

Other shareholders of Vanguard include JP Morgan, Apple, Microsoft, Wellington Management etc. These companies, therefore, have an indirect financial interest in the US supply of weapons to Ukraine.&nbsp;

By the way Wellington Management's shareholders include Temasek Company which solely belongs to the Singapore Government (Ministry of Finance). So far being among two public entities that I have come across in this complex the second being UK government with 30% stake in Leonardo UK Ltd which also manufactures weapons for the UK. By the way, Temasek also owns shares in Blackrock Inc and is the fifth highest shareholder. So whether the UK sends weapons to Ukraine or the US sends weapons to Ukraine Temasek (Singapore Government) still makes profit. Holdings companies for Wellington Management include Apple Inc, Microsoft, Pfizer etc. Yes you read&nbsp;right, Pfizer.&nbsp;

Did you know that Coca-Cola company belongs to both Vanguard Co (8.1%) and Blackrock Inc (6.4%) who are heavy investors in weapons manufacturing?&nbsp;

Well as was always the case,&nbsp;any opportunity to supply weapons is a profitable&nbsp;to the military-industrial complex. 2022 alone has seen revenue in this business of up to $19.5 billion. So we can only hope that is not enough incentive to perpetuate the Ukraine conflict.&nbsp;

Russian natural gas giant Gazprom said on Monday (July 25) that it is cutting gas deliveries through Nord Stream pipeline to 33 million cubic metres a day from Wednesday. This is 20 per cent of the pipeline's capacity. Nord Stream supplies gas to Europe. The state-owned company said that it was stopping operations of one of last two operating turbines because of &nbsp;"technical condition of the engine". Gazprom said that supplies from Portovaya compressor station will be slashed on Wednesday after 7 am Moscow time.

The announcement has elicited reaction from Europe with Germany saying there was no technical jurisdiction for Gazprom's announcement.

"According to the information we have there is no technical reason for a reduction of deliveries," a German economy ministry spokeswoman told AFP.

German group Siemens energy has been charged with maintenance of the turbine. Siemens said in a statement to AFP that there was "no link between the turbine and the gas cuts that have been implemented or announced".

Latest step from Gazprom has come after restoration of gas supply to Europe via Nord Stream last week. The supply was restored after 10 days of maintenace.

Germany is heavily dependent on Russian gas. It has accused Moscow of using gas as a weapon to exert political pressure. Other countries in the West have also alleged that Russia is trying to shoot back after economic sanctions were imposed on it in the wake of its invasion of Ukraine.

Gazprom cut flows to Germany via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline under the Baltic Sea in recent weeks, blaming the absence of a Siemens gas turbine that was undergoing repairs in Canada.

Earlier Monday, Gazprom said it had received paperwork related to the delayed delivery of the turbine but pointed out a number of issues remained, including those relating to EU and UK sanctions.

Russia is planning to hold big military exercise in the east thousands of miles away from where war in Ukraine is raging. The military exercise is planned for next month. The 'Vostok' exercises are slated to take place from August 30 to September 5.

They appear intended to send a message that Russia, despite the costly five-month war in Ukraine, remains focused on the defence of its entire territory and capable in military terms of sustaining "business as usual".

Russian military has emphasised in a statement that its capacity to hold drills remains unaffected. The statement said that no training activity had been cancelled and all necessary personnel, equipment and weapons will be supplied for the exercise.

"We draw your attention to the fact that only a part of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation is involved in the special military operation (in Ukraine), the number of which is quite sufficient to fulfil all the tasks set by the Supreme Commander-in-Chief," the statement said.

Some foreign media were spreading false information about "some kind of alleged mobilisation activities", it added.

After its invasion of Ukraine on February 24, Russia has suffered heavy losses and it progress has been slow. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin has not ordered mobilisation of reserves. The reserves are estimated to include 2 million people.

CIA Director William Burns has said that about 15,000 Russian troops had been killed in Ukraine conflict. This is as many deaths as the Soviet army suffered during its decade-long occupation of Afghanistan in late seventies and eighties.

The upcoming military exercises have been planned to take place in the eastern military district. This includes part of Siberia. Headquarters of the eastern military district are in Khabarovsk, near the Chinese border.
