In recent months, the belief that this would support a small but important sense of normalcy has grown stronger.” Paul Pomroy, McDonald's senior vice-president said in a message to his staff. There are 109 McDonald's outlets in Ukraine but the company did not specify which outlets in which region will be opening first. Reportedly, the company is initially looking to get in touch with its vendors and ensure that the supply chain constraints are sorted. Once the supplies are back into the stores, the employees will be brought back amid safety measures as the war continues to linger. "Over the next few months, we will begin working with suppliers to get product to restaurants, making the physical properties ready to serve customers, bringing restaurant teams and employees back on site, and implementing enhanced procedures and protocols to support the safety of our people and customers,” added Pomroy. The return of McDonald's is expected to send a message to the international business community that even with a war transpiring, the businesses can still run. And Ukraine needs business to return as the war is quickly depleting its coffers. Economists are of the view that Ukraine's economy could shrink as much as 35 per cent by the end of the year. Urging residents to shelter when they hear air raid sirens, Reznichenko wrote, "It was a terrible night. I am asking and begging you... Don't let the Russians kill you."

Most of the casualties were in the town of Marganets, just across the Dnieper River from the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

Regional council head Mykola Lukashuk informed that the strikes also damaged a local power line, leaving thousands of people without electricity.

Meanwhile, the Group of Seven industrialised nations (G7) has condemned Russia's occupation of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant and wants Moscow to immediately hand back full control of the plant to Ukraine.

Ukrainian staff operating the plant "must be able to carry out their duties without threats or pressure. It is Russia's continued control of the plant that endangers the region," the G7 foreign ministers said in a statement.

The tensions have brought back memories of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster in then Soviet Ukraine, which killed hundreds of people and spread radioactive contamination over much of Europe.

Meanwhile, the blasts at the Saki airfield in Crimea a day before left beachgoers panicked who could be seen fleeing a beach with children in videos uploaded on social media amidst clouds of grey smoke.

Moscow insists that the explosions were caused by detonating ammunition and not Ukrainian fire. However, Ukraine has now said that nine Russian warplanes were destroyed in the blasts.

Verhoosel noted that the increase in premature births "is real" as he said that a larger number of uncomplicated births are now taking place at home. Russian oil giant Transneft on Tuesday made a sensational claim that Ukraine had suspended Russian oil pipeline flows to countries in central Europe citing payment issues.

Reportedly, the southern Druzhba pipeline, also called the Friendship pipeline, has been halted since August 4.&nbsp;The suspension of oil was confirmed by MOL, a Hungarian energy firm and Transpetrol, a Slovak pipeline operator.

An estimated 250,000 barrels per day (bpd) is supplied by the Russian side through this pipeline and&nbsp;if the suspension continues, countries such as Slovakia, Hungary and the Czech Republic might run out of oil as all of them are heavily reliant&nbsp;on Russian crude without any alternative in sight.&nbsp;

An uneven payment system

Transneft explained the issue by citing European financial sanctions which were acting as the bottleneck. Reportedly, Transneft made the payments through&nbsp;Gazprombank which is not on the list of sanctioned Russian companies.

Gazprombank made the payment last month on July 22 but a few days later, July 28 to be precise, the money was returned. It is pertinent to note that under the European Union sanctions, the banks in Europe have to seek approval from respective government authorities.

The war has been going on for months and yet the European continent has only been able to reduce their combined gas dependency on Russia by a tiny five per cent.&nbsp;Last year, Russia provided a whopping 40 per cent of Europe's total consumption of natural gas.

According to eyewitness accounts, black smoke was seen coming out of the military base and a number of videos shot from the nearby beaches were already circulated on social media.

According to Reuters, the eyewitnesses heard 12 explosions within a minute. Half an hour later, there were three other blasts and sirens were heard in the nearby town on Saky.

Sergei Aksyonov – the Kremlin-appointed governor of Crimea – posted on Telegram that he visited the military airbase after the explosions and the "circumstances are being clarified".

Earlier, North Korea offered 100,000 "volunteer" troops to help Russia’s chances in the ongoing invasion of Ukraine. “There are reports that 100,000 North Korean volunteers are prepared to come and take part in the conflict,” Russian defence analyst Igor Korotchenko told Russian Channel One.
