Global fast-food giant McDonald’s on Thursday announced that it was gearing for a phased reopening of its outlets in the war-torn country of Ukraine. Reportedly, ever since Russia invaded Ukraine in February earlier this year, the American company had closed its shutters in the country. However, it has continued to pay its 10,000-odd workforce in the country for the last six months. “We’ve spoken extensively to our employees who have expressed a strong desire to return to work and see our restaurants in Ukraine reopen. In recent months, the belief that this would support a small but important sense of normalcy has grown stronger.” Paul Pomroy, McDonald's senior vice-president said in a message to his staff. There are 109 McDonald's outlets in Ukraine but the company did not specify which outlets in which region will be opening first. Reportedly, the company is initially looking to get in touch with its vendors and ensure that the supply chain constraints are sorted. Once the supplies are back into the stores, the employees will be brought back amid safety measures as the war continues to linger. "Over the next few months, we will begin working with suppliers to get product to restaurants, making the physical properties ready to serve customers, bringing restaurant teams and employees back on site, and implementing enhanced procedures and protocols to support the safety of our people and customers,” added Pomroy. The return of McDonald's is expected to send a message to the international business community that even with a war transpiring, the businesses can still run. And Ukraine needs business to return as the war is quickly depleting its coffers. Economists are of the view that Ukraine's economy could shrink as much as 35 per cent by the end of the year. Regional council head Mykola Lukashuk informed that the strikes also damaged a local power line, leaving thousands of people without electricity.

Meanwhile, the Group of Seven industrialised nations (G7) has condemned Russia's occupation of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant and wants Moscow to immediately hand back full control of the plant to Ukraine.

Ukrainian staff operating the plant "must be able to carry out their duties without threats or pressure. It is Russia's continued control of the plant that endangers the region," the G7 foreign ministers said in a statement.

The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war led to an apparent increase in premature births in Ukraine, the global health agency Unitaid said Tuesday (August 9). If babies are born at least three weeks before a full 40-week pregnancy, they are premature. A spokesperson for the UN-backed global health initiative told the World Health Organization (WHO) that the Ukraine war is increasing the risks of premature births and causing babies to need more oxygen. Why is it happening? Herve Verhoosel, who is the Unitaid spokesman, told reporters in Geneva that Russia's invasion of Ukraine "increases levels of stress in pregnant women, which leads to an increase in the number of premature births reported". On February 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the invasion of Ukraine what it calls a "special military operation". Moscow said that it aims to "demilitarise" and "de-nazify" its neighbouring country and protect Russian speakers in the country. ALSO READ | Iraq begins work on reconstructing the Mosul airport The war has led to massive humanitarian crises. Thousands of people lost their lives and millions were displaced as they migrated in search of safer places. So far, the invasion has seen hundreds of hospitals damaged or destroyed. The supply lines are also disrupted. The entire scenario has placed newborn babies at risk of death or disability from a lack of access to equipment and oxygen. Verhoosel said that "Babies born prematurely are more likely to develop respiratory, neurological or digestive complications - conditions that often require oxygen for treatment." What's the current scenario? The Unitaid is working with some of the Ukrainian hospitals and the health agency found that the premature baby rate had gone up from 12 per cent to 40 per cent since Russia invaded. Verhoosel noted that the increase in premature births "is real" as he said that a larger number of uncomplicated births are now taking place at home. ALSO READ | France: Beluga whale stranded in Seine river dies during rescue attempt How to tackle it? Well, ending the war is the best option, but Unitaid revealed what is it doing to help mother and their newborns. Unitaid said that Bubble CPAP is a non-invasive way of ventilating newborns who are struggling to breathe. Unitaid said that it provided 220 Bubble nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) devices and 125 oxygen blender systems to supply infants with breathing support and oxygen therapy. Oxygen blenders prevent eye, lung, and brain damage associated with giving babies pure oxygen. As stated by Unitaid, this portable device allows for the precise delivery of oxygen concentration, flow and pressure. The device can greatly improve the chances for newborns and infants. WATCH | Episode 1 | Inside Xi's China The Great Gameplan | WION special Series × The Bubble CPAP system costs less than $500 per unit to produce. The best part is, that this system can work round the clock for three years without recharging. Verhoosel added, "The conflict in Ukraine has seen many hospitals damaged or destroyed, and supply chains have been severed. This puts thousands of newborns at high risk of disability or death from a lack in access to oxygen, necessary equipment, and essential treatments." So far, the World Health Organization has verified 434 attacks on healthcare in Ukraine since the Russian invasion, including 366 that impacted on health facilities. Explained: Why Russia-Ukraine war caused rise in premature births in Ukraine

Russian oil giant Transneft on Tuesday made a sensational claim that Ukraine had suspended Russian oil pipeline flows to countries in central Europe citing payment issues.

Reportedly, the southern Druzhba pipeline, also called the Friendship pipeline, has been halted since August 4. The suspension of oil was confirmed by MOL, a Hungarian energy firm and Transpetrol, a Slovak pipeline operator.

An estimated 250,000 barrels per day (bpd) is supplied by the Russian side through this pipeline and if the suspension continues, countries such as Slovakia, Hungary and the Czech Republic might run out of oil as all of them are heavily reliant on Russian crude without any alternative in sight.

An uneven payment system

Transneft explained the issue by citing European financial sanctions which were acting as the bottleneck. Reportedly, Transneft made the payments through Gazprombank which is not on the list of sanctioned Russian companies.

Gazprombank made the payment last month on July 22 but a few days later, July 28 to be precise, the money was returned. It is pertinent to note that under the European Union sanctions, the banks in Europe have to seek approval from respective government authorities.
